Send us your thoughts! Out February 7, 2025, Griot Songs marks the return of the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble after more than a decade, featuring soloists Jason Palmer, Mark Zaleski, Alex Brown, Mark Cocheo and others “Griot Songs firmly plants Omar Thomas in the pantheon of distinguished and exceptional writers. He blurs the lines stylistically in the best of ways with a texturally compelling 'heart and soul' sonic story all his own.”– Grammy-winning drummer/composer Terri Lyne Carrington“Omar Thomas… proves himself a modern-day griot - summoning influences, traditions, and narratives from both past and present, framing them in a manner that is at varying times tender, dramatic, mystical, and joyful - but always absolutely captivating!” – Grammy-nominated composer/bandleader Chuck OwenIn West African tradition, the griot is a storyteller, poet and musician whose songs become a repository for a community's traditions and history. Sixteen years in the making, Griot Songs – the breathtaking third release by the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble – is a distinctly personal and emotionally vibrant take on the role of the modern griot. Through his visionary compositions and arrangements, Omar Thomas spins captivating narratives from his own experiences, inspirations and heritage. It's been over a decade since the release of the Omar Thomas Large Ensemble's last album, We Will Know: An LGBT Civil Rights Piece in Four Movements, which Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Terri Lyne Carrington hailed as a “thought provoking, multi-layered masterpiece.” The big band made its auspicious debut in 2013 with I Am, which entered the iTunes Jazz Charts at #1. But Griot Songs, out February 7, 2025, is the project that Thomas has envisioned since initially forming the ensemble for his graduate composition recital at New England Conservatory in 2008. The earliest versions of three of the pieces on the album date back to that time, with the remainder spanning several years of composing, revising and dreaming. In the meantime, Thomas established himself an acclaimed and in-demand composer for wind ensemble. In 2019, he was awarded the National Bandmasters Association / Revelli Award for his wind composition “Come Sunday,” becoming the first Black composer awarded the honor in the contest's 42-year history. In addition, he's a respected educator currently serving as Associate Professor of Composition and Jazz Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Griot Songs marks Thomas' impassioned return to his roots. “I was ready to reintroduce myself as a big band composer,” he declares.Support the show

“Throbbing, pulsating pain.” “Like a drill boring into your head.” “As though your head is gripped by a vise.” “Stabbing pain hammering through your brain.” There is no shortage of metaphors used to describe the horrific, incapacitating pain of migraines. But try as we might, can any of them truly convey what it feels like to be at the mercy of such pain? In many ways, migraines reveal our shortcomings: with language that fails to accurately describe pain, with empathy when we continue to dismiss migraines as “just really bad headaches”, with medicine as we struggle to find reliable treatments and preventatives, and with biology as we fail to understand the complete pathology of this condition. In this episode, we do our best to explore these shortcomings by deep diving into what we do know about the biology and history of migraines. Why do some people get migraines and others don't? How do certain medications work? What the heck is going on with aura? Have migraines always been around? How have people dealt with them or perceived them historically? What's on the horizon for migraines in the future? As always, we've got lots of questions and lots of answers for you, so tune in today!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

About the post: Trash and uselessness are related but not the same. Trash is problematic and needs to leave our ideological boundaries, useless things we still view in terms of former or potential use. They are not quite trash precisely because they are defined through their lack of use, which requires continuous evaluation not discarding from our thoughts (revisit from time to time > Confirm: Yep, still useless. Trash: Too late, it's already gone).

This is the beginning of our summer series The Roaring Summer of ‘21 Series: The Best of the Best! We have gone back thru all 5 of our seasons and come up with 10 episodes that have been our most listened too and will be airing those episodes over the next 10 weeks. Today we start the countdown with #10 - Discernment: The Journey to Discover God's Will. It was originally aired in May 2019 (our 11th episode!) and Steve chats with Father Tim Corbley about discernment and the Ignatian Exercises. Enjoy as we jump back to 2019! SHOW NOTES All of us are looking to discover God's will. We all need clarity in making decisions. This exciting conversation between Steve and Father Tim Corbley unpacks spiritual discernment, defined as the art of finding clarity. Through discernment, our goal is to “find God in all things.”  Father Tim was Steve Smith's spiritual guide for year long journey Steve took in 2017, called The Ignatian Exercises. This conversation is like listening to two seasoned souls talk of deep things.  Four Movements of the Ignatian Exercises The first movement concentrates on how much we are loved by God, how he thinks of us as his beloved. The second movement is a realization of our sin. The Ignatian tradition defines sin not as morality based but based on our ability to hear God. As we are more attuned to God, we hear his plan for us and are given discernment on the decisions we must make. The third movement is about how our desire to please God is the will of God; our surrender to Gods voice is freedom. Living with open hands and knowing that God will open the way gently.  The final movement is about Holy Indifference… the act of surrender. Holding your hands out and up without clinching and grabbing or holding on.   Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Corbley I.V. Dei The Reverend Doctor Timothy Corbley was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in May 1993 and is a co-founder of Heart of God Hermitage, a contemplative center of spirituality near Woodland Park Colorado. He brings with him a passion for helping others to grow more deeply in their spiritual lives. Fr. Timothy has ministered in a variety of settings. He has served the people of God as a pastor, hospital chaplain, teacher of pastoral care, retreat director, preacher of parish missions, and is a trained spiritual director in the Ignatian tradition. Fr. Timothy's current passion is providing spiritual guidance, pastoral care, and leadership to the faithful of Teller County Catholic Community.   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST Moment to Breathe: Merton Prayer Sleeping with Bread by Matthew Linn, Dennis Linn, Sheila Fabricant Linn Finding my own GPS for my Soul (or Why I spent a year of my life doing the Ignatian Exercises) - blog post by Stephen Smith SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate Here for an individual contribution or on Patreon to set up monthly support.   CONTACT US podcast@pottersinn.com   INTERESTED IN MORE SOUL CARE RESOURCES? Stórt skref í kvenréttindabaráttunni stigið þann dag. Find show notes for this episode at https://TransformingMission.org/065  In This Episode This week we’re diving into the second chapter of Galatians, looking to the letter to explore lessons for leadership. Chapter 2 of Galatians is a twisting, turning, confronting whirlwind of rhetoric from Paul to the people of Galatia. We'll share the four movements of embrace, point to verses in Chapter 2, and leave you with a question to think about and act on. The Galatians and false teachers and even some of Paul’s brothers in Christ were having a hard time navigating things they thought were opposites. Here are just a few:  Law v. Gospel Works v. Faith Jews v. Gentiles Torah v. grace Paul says no way - the God I know in Jesus says in stretching out my arms on the cross, I’m embracing you. These are not concepts that are competing and they certainly aren't about division. The reality is...What the world seeks to divide, God seeks to unify.  Hold those challenges in mind as we step into Episode 065 of LeaderCast. Miroslav Volf in his book Exclusion and Embrace uses the metaphor of an embrace to talk about the dynamic relationship between self and other. We're talking about what an embrace symbolizes.   Listen to the full episode to explore the four movements of embrace and their connection to Galatians 2. Keep Growing! After listening to the podcast, consider the following: What are you doing as a local church leader to open arms to the community around you? Have you defined your mission field? What signals to the people in your community that you want to be in a relationship with them...especially people living in poverty. What would happen if you began to pray as a congregation, Lord, help us be the congregation you need us to be in this time and place? Who do you have a hard time sharing space at a table with? Why? Maria Schneider Anita Baker Biography: Described as "elegant, beautiful, sophisticated, intense, and crystal clear in emotional intent," the music of Omar Thomas continues to move listeners everywhere it is performed. Born to Guyanese parents in Brooklyn, New York in 1984, Omar moved to Boston in 2006 to pursue a Master of Music in Jazz Composition at the New England Conservatory of Music. He is the protégé of lauded composers and educators Ken Schaphorst and Frank Carlberg, and has studied under multiple Grammy-winning composer and bandleader Maria Schneider. Hailed by Herbie Hancock as showing "great promise as a new voice in the further development of jazz in the future," educator, arranger, and award-winning composer Omar Thomas has created music extensively in the contemporary jazz ensemble idiom. It was while completing his Master of Music Degree that he was appointed the position of Assistant Professor of Harmony at Berklee College of Music at the surprisingly young age of 23. He was awarded the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2008, and invited by the ASCAP Association to perform his music in their highly exclusive JaZzCap Showcase, held in New York City. In 2012, Omar was named the Boston Music Award's "Jazz Artist of the Year." He is currently on faculty in the Music Theory department at The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Omar's music has been performed in concert halls the world over. He has been commissioned to create works in both jazz and classical styles. His work has been performed by such diverse groups as the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble, the San Francisco and Boston Gay Mens' Choruses, and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, in addition to a number of the country's top collegiate music ensembles. Omar has had a number of celebrated singers perform over his arrangements, including Stephanie Mills, Yolanda Adams, Nona Hendryx, BeBe Winans, Kenny Lattimore, Marsha Ambrosius, Sheila E., Raul Midon, Leela James, Dionne Warwick, and Chaka Khan. His work is featured on Dianne Reeves's Grammy Award-winning album, "Beautiful Life." Omar's first album, "I AM," debuted at #1 on iTunes Jazz Charts and peaked at #13 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums Chart. His second release, " We Will Know: An LGBT Civil Rigths Piece in Four Movements," has been hailed by Grammy Award-wining drummer, composer, and producer Terri Lyne Carrington as being a "thought provoking, multi-layered masterpiece" which has "put him in the esteemed category of great artists." "We Will Know" was awarded two OUTMusic Awards, including "Album of the Year." For this work, Omar was named the 2014 Lavender Rhino Award recipient by The History Project, acknowledging his work as an up-and-coming activist in the Boston LGBTQ community. Says Terri Lyne: "Omar Thomas will prove to be one of the more important composer/arrangers of his time."

Our guest today is Carl Paoli, a movement expert, elite gymnast, a trainer, and an all around superhuman. In his home country of Spain, he competed for over 15 years, rising through the ranks as a gymnast, while exploring a range of other sports from snowboarding to water skiing and martial arts. In 2004, he left what he thought would be a career in Marine Biology to return to the world of movement and fitness, and his meteoric rise to prominence has been something to marvel at... Today, he is one of the most respected CrossFit trainers in the world, working with greats like Kelly Starrett and our former guest, Diane Fu. However, whereas Diane brings a unique power-lifting aspect to the world of CrossFit, he brings a vast knowledge of gymnastics and kinesiology. In addition to training at SF CrossFit and running his own program called Naka Athletics, he has recently published a book with called FreeStyle, which teaches us how to maximize our Sport and Life performance with just four basic movements. This conversation is really going to blow you away. I went into the conversation expecting to geek out on kinesiology and physical performance, and honestly, Carl offered that and much, much more. We talk about family. We talk about the mindset of success. We talk about prioritizing the things that matter in life. Carl is an amazing guy who has so much wisdom to offer both in and out of the gym, and I know he's going to inspire you to be as superhuman as he is.

The term "dubscapes" in the title of the mix pretty much says it all.  This is dub mix.  I've used dubby style songs in mixes before but never did a whole dub mix. Of course after setting out to do an all dub mix, I veered off course pretty quickly by including a cover of the Twin Peaks theme &  track from Vangelis.  I'd been looking for a way to work those two tunes into a mix & they seem to fit pretty well here. The Twin Peaks cover is by Talvihorros.  He has an excellent recording out on Hibernate called "Music in Four Movements".  After buying that album Ben Chatwin(Talvihorros) was kind enough to send me a copy of his cover of the Twin Peaks theme.  I liked this version immediately & knew I had to find a home for it in a mix. One track in the mix is from an album that will end up in my top ten list this year.  The album is Deepchord presents Echospace - Liumin/Liumin Reduced.  It's a double album with the first being great ambient dub/techno and the second an album of field recorded treatments made by Rod Modell in Tokyo.  An immersive record that I highly recommend. The dub used in this mix is fairly ambient, especially towards the end where the ambient drones & washes come in & the beats slow way down.
