Some of my core values include: connectedness, spirituality, morality, diversity, effectiveness, influencing others, teaching, and happiness. What are yours? Allow those core values to help you keep your neuroendocrine or mechanism of hormonal regulation in balance. You have the power to keep your cortisol and oxytocin counterbalanced. Basically this info will help you stay out of chronic stress mode. You see, when you are stressed for long terms the releasing of cortisol can increase you high blood pressure, impair your cognitive abilities, and lower your immune system. During COVID we have to stay ahead of the game. A strengthened immune system is vital. So I invite you to create a Mindmap with pictures of your core values to assist you in staying focused on the important things in life when life presents you with challenges or stressors. When you complete the Mindmap activity you will:1, describe your life challenge2. identify your reasons for pressing through the hardship or stress3. identify your core values (not goals)4. stay connected to these core values when challenges present themselves No matter what life brings to you, you GOT THIS! In this episode, Dr. Valdes decided to address the extremely controversial topic of Abortion and the Pro-Life Movement. In this podcast, Dr. Valdes gets heated up with what he considers the hypocrisy among those they called themselves Christians, Catholics, and Protestants alike. Dr. Valdes understands clearly why people who have no faith want nothing to do with Christianity, it's not Jesus anyone has a problem with Its Jesus’ “so-called followers.” Dr. Valdes received an email from a very dear friend of his, who also happens to be one of the most famous swim/triathlon coaches in the world, who has been an atheist all his life and through the many years they have known each other, this person has started to have faith. I'm an earthy, artsy landscape designer with degrees in ornamental horticulture and landscape architecture.     I've worked for the National Park Service, an environmental communication firm, design-build firms, and 15 years ago I started my own landscape design business.     My dad died a few years ago.  While I was at the hospital in his final days I started to redesign the green space that I used as my recharging place. It was just a patch of grass with a flagpole in the middle. I needed a place to connect with the earth, feel the sun on my face, and find my center. The design process started as a fun creative activity. I realized that, like me, many people could benefit from a restorative kind of landscape. Not just friends and family that visited, but hospital staff and patients as well.   I wanted to create a place inspired and uplifted. I wanted to create a place where you could restore and rejuvenate, a place where you could connect with the earth and allow that energy to rejuvenate your soul. Show Notes...In this week's episode Barry-John speaks to Jorge Valdes who is one of the founding members of the infamous Medellin Drugs Cartel. In part 1 of this 2 part podcast, Jorge Valdes talks about how he went to prison in the United States after a plane that he was a passenger of crashed in the jungles of Panama while carrying over 200kg of cocaine worth over $7,000,000 USD. Jorge was then severely tortured while in a Panama prison. After paying several bribes to officials and even paying off General Noriega himself, he was handed over to Interpol and extradited to the United States where he went on trial and was imprisoned. He also speaks about his relationship with one of the history's most feared and recognized drug lord's, Pablo Escobar as well as the female Colombian drug queen known as the Black Widow, Griselda Blanco and their propensity for extreme violence. For a while there, I found that my social media use was getting out of control and it was easy for me to justify as “necessary for my business.” But deep down, I knew that was an excuse–and I also knew that if I was going to use this podcast to encourage mothers to be intentional and present with their families, then I needed to be doing my best to also live that way in my day-to-day life. So over the past several years, I’ve experimented with some concrete strategies to help me balance my social media use with being present in my motherhood, and although I am FAR from perfect at this, it has helped me a lot, and I hope that the three tools presented in today’s episode will help you as well! When you implement them, you will make your business even more profitable: Step one: Your total expenses for the prior year and cost per client or customer,  Step two: Understanding your revenue by calculating revenue by client Step three: Analyze your data and do quick math to find your profit margin Step four: Develop a better plan that will help you make necessary changes Step five: Execute the plan to better your business Additionally, when you price your services consider the following: ⅓ should go to overhead like software and other fixed expenses ⅓ should go to payroll including yours and those you outsource ⅓ should be focused solely on profit.  When you consider these factors, you will have a clear understanding of what you should be charging your clients.  What to change to build your business What can you control? To start, you can decrease your expenses and increase your revenue for each client!  To make this change, start with one thing and then work from there. What is the easiest place you can affect change? Raise your prices on unprofitable clients! Draft a letter to them, letting them know about the fee increase.  Don't be embarrassed if your business isn't performing how you want. When you make these changes, you'll reap the rewards and live the life you deserve. How to take action and build your business Take action with what you've learned. In this episode, Dr. Valdes addresses the challenges our nation faces today as a result of some police brutality and a sorely neglected community, finally erupting as a result of the many years of abuse. For Dr. Valdes, a person of color, he sees the problem is much more complicated. Dr. Valdes stresses that it is vital that we do not judge the many good police officers who leave their homes every day and risk not coming home so that they can protect the community they serve. This specific incident to Dr. Valdes it almost seems like the officer was possessed. Dr. Valdes believes that no matter how much of America we burn and destroy, it will never change other's perceptions against people of color; on the contrary, the looting and vandalism only affirm the belief for those who dislike people of color. The crux of the problem that needs addressing is criminal justice reform, here is where all the issues lie. In the year 2016, in Georgia of the 8760 people convicted of drug offenses, 22% were white, and 78% were people of color. This is where all the leaders who want to make a difference need to direct their energies to; it is in the ballot boxes and in Washington DC, where we need to stand and protest. Last, Lebron James is the model to follow, we who succeed can not abandon our communities we must reinvest in them. Sadly, the minute a person of color makes it the first thing they do is leave their town and move to the white suburbs where the people we criticize the most live.
