Did you get a brand new DSLR or Mirrorless camera under the Christmas tree last year? Then this episode is for you! Getting your first camera is both exciting and terribly overwhelming! There's so many dials, buttons and menu options that it can feel a bit daunting at first. I know both from personal experience, and from teaching photography to thousands of students over the last 8 years that it can also be very disheartening when you don't get the photos you want from your camera. So much so, that I know of many people who gave up pretty quickly, because they could get better photos from their phone! I don't want that to happen to you, so today on the podcast, I'm giving you 6 simple things you can do TODAY that will instantly improve your photos. That way, while you're learning the in and outs of photography, you are at least getting better photos so you aren't tempted to revert back to your phone camera! Tune in to learn: What you'll need your camera manual for (and what you definitely won't!) Where you should take your first photos for best results. The simple technique that will instantly make your photos look more professional. What nearly all new photographers do that make their images look like snapshots (and what you can do instead) An introduction to a simple composition rule that will make your photos look more dynamic How to make sure your camera hits the right focus point! Welcome to one of my favorite episodes of the year: My Private Practice Predictions for 2024! And specifically, I'm talking about how to thrive in a changing economic landscape.I'm going to make 3 BIG predictions that you're going to want to know if you're thinking about starting your private practice this year. I'll give you a hint of one of them: The Importance of Diversification of Income. I tell my students in the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs all the time about how business isn't something that you learn once. Just like you're a lifelong learner for clinical education, it's important to invest in being a lifelong learner for your business education. One of the reasons is that this landscape of practice changes every few years, and you need to be prepared and know how to navigate the ups and downs, the feast and famine cycles, and different positive and negative trends when it comes to things like finances, marketing, hiring, and more. So I know what I'm talking about. And no matter where you are in the private practice journey, I know that the information that I'm about to share can really help you.In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How we are planning to support even more students in our programs this yearThe shift toward lifestyle private practicesPositioning your private practice in a changing economyWhy diversification of income is crucialThose are my private practice predictions for 2024! I hope you're feeling as energized and excited about the future of private practice as I am. My word for 2024 is 'Evolve' – because it's all about evolving with the times, simplifying complexities, and thriving in our practices. Beginners, Private Practice Bootcamp starts on January 22nd! Today on the show I have a special guest named Heather Lasco, a fellow registered dietitian, and we are talking about so many things related to our relationship with food and our bodies. Heather is such a wealth of knowledge and wisdom and I know you're going to learn a ton from her. You'll hear us talk about: 1. The overlap between dieting, disordered eating and eating disorders (and some surprising insights about common misconceptions about why these issues with food tend to get overlooked). 2. Body liberation as a powerful tool to help you navigate body image struggles, and why body positivity tends to fall short. 3. AWhat to do if you're feeling “stuck” in your process of finding peace with food. Maybe you've realized that dieting doesn't work, and you're listening to your body with food, but you still aren't happy with your body and you don't know what to do. 4. And finally, we talk about how to explore your relationship with alcohol alongside food, and some key differences in how to think about alcohol vs food when it comes to giving yourself unconditional permission. There's SO much richness to this episode and I can't wait for you to hear it. Today's Wellness Woo is continuous glucose monitors. Is it really possible to meet with EVERY student in your school? We know it's important to check in with students to see how they are doing but how could you possibly sit down and talk with every single student? Our guest today, Dr. Heidi MacDonald is a school psychologist who uses “minute meetings” to talk to every student in her school and is sharing how you can implement this in your school as well! Dr. Heidi MacDonald is in her 25th year of being a school psychologist. She resides in Connecticut but was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She is a proud graduate of Penn State University's School Psychology Program. She is married to a school psychologist and they have one daughter, who is a Junior at Penn State. Heidi loves her job! She enjoys supervising interns from and teaching in the School Psychology Program at the University of Hartford. In her spare time, Heidi loves working out, thrift shopping, crafting, and batching everything that she can in order to make life more efficient. She and her family have 4 cats and 1 guinea pig, Marcel, who goes to school with her. We want to make sure that no student falls through cracks and that every student is getting the services they need. Getting the student's perspective and input on how things are going not only gives us valuable data but also gives us insight into how we can best support our students. You know I absolutely LOVE using data as a school counselor! But why is having a data driven school counseling program so important? Well, first it allows us to see if what we are doing is actually working and helps us tweak things when needed. Second, it's an amazing way to advocate for our role as school counselors. And I know it's early in the school year and you might be wondering why I'm talking about data already but it's so important to start using and tracking data right from the start! Plus, there are great ways to use data from the previous year to help your students as soon as possible. So, this week, I want to focus on how to plan data driven small groups to make the biggest impact on your kiddos! In this episode, I am sharing the 3 types of data we should use in our programs and how we can use data to determine who is in our groups, document the interventions, and measure progress. * Show Notes: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/podcast-episodes/data-driven-small-groups * Resources Mentioned: Join the IMPACT Membership: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/impact School Counseling Referral Form: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/School-Counseling-Referral-Form-2759148 School Counseling Data Collection Spreadsheets: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/School-Counseling-Data-Collection-Spreadsheets-Caseload-and-Counseling-Log-7485732 School Counseling Self-Assessments Super Bundle with Digital Data Tracking Forms: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/School-Counseling-Self-Assessments-Super-Bundle-with-Digital-Data-Tracking-Forms-7615254 Data Collection Behavior Surveys: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Data-Collection-Behavior-Surveys-School-Counseling-Data-Tracking-Forms-5221301 Enroll in the Stress-Free School Counseling Course: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/enroll * Connect with Rachel: Shop: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Bright-Futures-Counseling Blog: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightfuturescounseling/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2473191466030095 If you are enjoying School Counseling Simplified please follow and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/school-counseling-simplified-podcast/id1534494971

In the United States, we have always lived with the history and realities of racism.Whether we have lived with it as an active part of our life or have had the privilege to ignore it and deny it, it has shaped our understanding of our country and each other. Since racism has always been a loaded, hot-button, triggering topic to discuss, many leaders have flatly avoided talking about it. Since the summer of 2020, however, organizations are realizing that this issue is not going away.Workers want organizations that are inclusive and equitable. As such, the avoidance strategy that has allowed leaders to manage this issue in the past is emerging as the biggest problem of all.Fortunately for all of us, Gena Cox has taken the time to think deeply about how to open the door to these important conversations.Listen in for compassionate, insightful, and practical advice to help all of us navigate conversations about creating inclusion in the workplace.Join us as we discuss:How the root cause of the failure of most DEI initiatives is avoidance driven by a lack of skills on the part of even the most well-meaning leadersHow respect is the opposite of grandstanding and is the foundation of our only viable path forward to create inclusive workplacesHow to have respectful relationships with your employees even when difficult conversations and decisions are neededThe Unleashing Your Great Work podcast is sponsored by the Great Work Journal! We are excited to bring you another encore presentation of a popular episode of Season 2. We hope you enjoy! As human beings, we are constantly focused on the doing, doing, doing, and Jeanette advises us that if we could just take a “power-pause” and listen more, we can gain a better understanding of what we need to accomplish our Great Work.Jeanette believes if we can listen more to ourselves, we can begin to understand what we need right now and truly begin to feel to engage in what Jeanette calls “mental listening”. We, as humans, are amazing, we are here to solve problems, and the things we worry about are the things we care about the most.If we can pause for a moment, and shift the “care for” to “care about”, we can understand that solving problems is not just about needing time off or time to get away, it's about learning to “un-worry”. It is only then that we discover “self-care isn't really about self…it's about care.”The Unleashing Your Great Work podcast is sponsored by the Great Work Journal! Let go of the diet rules and food judgments and start thinking like an intuitive eater. If you're tired of feeling guilty about eating certain foods, or you're stuck in the phase of “eat whatever you want, whenever you want,” or you are worried about your weight and your health if you're not dieting - then this episode is for you. You've ditched dieting and have set out to find freedom with food - and that sounds great on the surface. The thing is, it's harder than it sounds. And even though you're not necessarily restricting or depriving yourself anymore, you still feel like you don't feel comfortable or confident about your eating. I get it, because I've been in this “in between” place too. That place where you're not dieting, but you're also not *actually* eating intuitively either, and you're doubting yourself and the process. In this episode, I'm sharing my own experience in shifting from the diet mentality and being really hung up on so-called “healthy eating,” to becoming a full-fledged intuitive eater where I have the peace and freedom with food and my body that I've always wanted AND I am still mindful about my health. It takes some mindset work to get there, and for those of you who are struggling with this, let's talk about it. This is a great episode for anyone who has been working on ditching dieting and learning the ropes with intuitive eating, who has been practicing intuitive eating for a while and feels stuck, and anyone who wants to go deeper into cultivating freedom with food and peace within themselves. For two decades she has worked with court and gang-involved, youth LGBT+. teen mothers, special needs populations, and educators. Throughout her career, she taught, counseled, ensured support of academic intervention services, supervised, conducted professional development trainings, designed curriculum, and developed programs. She started Informed Decisions to provide resources for counselors and teachers working with multicultural urban youth, teens, and young adults. She wants educators to feel confident in facilitating and engaging in interactive activities for their students. The information and resources are culturally, racially, and developmentally appropriate materials used to engage, educate, guide, and inspire our young people. Youth deserve to be afforded equitable opportunities to become productive contributing members of society. Together she believes we can engage multicultural youth in making informed decisions about their lives and future successes! * Show Notes: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/podcast-episodes/sel-advisory-program * Resources Mentioned: Join the IMPACT 2.0 membership for ongoing support and access to 300+ resources: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/impact Enroll in the Stress Free School Counseling Course: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/enroll * Connect with Leslie: Shop: https://bit.ly/3JK313r Blog: https://informeddecisionsblog.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/informed.decisions/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2100385153442681 * Connect with Rachel: Shop: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Bright-Futures-Counseling Blog: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightfuturescounseling/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2473191466030095 If you are enjoying School Counseling Simplified please follow and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/school-counseling-simplified-podcast/id1534494971
