Plumbing the Depths of Existence: Ibn Arabi on Human and Divine Being

The influence of the great medieval mystic Ibn ‘Arabi is immeasurable, reaching from his home city of Murcia in Andalusia to Aceh in Indonesia and just about everywhere in between. His teachings similarly try to encompass, or at least articulate, the unfathomable depths of being, both human and divine, together with the links between God's ultimate being and our own contingent existence. Whereas Ibn ‘Arabi's terrestrial life played out between Seville and Tunis in his early career and Mecca and Damascus in his later years, his spiritual life unfolded through encounters with saints and prophets in the ‘imaginal world' (or ‘alam al-mithal) that was central to his cosmology. In this episode, we trace this double life and summarize his doctrines at large. We then turn to his two most famous works, the Futuhat al-Makiyya (‘Meccan Revelations') and Fusus al-Hikam (‘Ringstones of Wisdom'), to unravel the key concept of huwiyya (literally ‘He-ness'). Nile Green talks to Ismail Lala, author of Knowing God: Ibn ‘Arabi and ‘Abd al-Razzaq al-Qashani's Metaphysics of the Divine (Brill, 2020).

Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude admits violent crime statistics are a bit complicated, without an understanding of how they work. Chief Schlude joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that violent crime in Columbia has increased by four percent this year. Chief Schlude says violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and assault. Chief Schlude met this week with CPD's analyst to get the new numbers. We also discussed the proposed Flock camera system during the live interview. Columbia Police have drafted a policy regarding the appropriate use of the proposed Flock Safety camera program system. CPD recently held eight sessions across the city to get feedback on the issue, and Chief Schlude tells listeners that many of the comments are supportive, while some are against it. CPD says Flock Safety technology would be used to combat crime in the city. CPD hopes to purchase and implement automatic license plate readers in the city. CPD says Flock Safety cameras support law enforcement by offering objective evidence that's crucial for solving cases. CPD says the cameras would provide real-time alerts to law enforcement when they detect stolen vehicles or suspect vehicles listed in local, state or national crime databases. CPD says Flock Safety cameras record license plate numbers and vehicle details like make, model and color, but don't capture identifiable images of people or their faces. CPD says vehicles are involved in 70 percent of crimes. Chief Schlude tells listeners that she's optimistic that Columbia's city council will approve the Flock proposal in September. She says she's worked with city manager De'Carlon Seewood and others to address concerns raised by the city council during the FUSUS camera discussion. Chief Schlude describes herself as an eternal optimist:

Fusûsü'l-hikem, Şeyh Muhyiddin İbnü'l-Arabî'nin (ö. 1240) en önemli eserlerinden biridir. Nakşu'l-Fusûs, Şeyh'in Fusûsü'l-hikem'inden belli başlı konularda bizzat yaptığı özettir.

The Columbia Police Officers Association (CPOA) is asking residents to attend tonight's city council meeting to support law enforcement. Attorney Donald Weaver will address the council tonight and is expected to call on them to support law enforcement. The CPOA says criminals in Columbia have become more emboldened, noting a suspect recently allegedly tried to rape women on the MKT trail in broad daylight. The CPOA also says “pedestrians downtown and elsewhere can routinely be seen harassing others, littering and even defecating on the streets and sidewalks.” CPOA President Matt Nichols joined us live on "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", and praises police chief Geoff Jones and city manager De'Carlon Seewood. He's critical of the council vote on FUSUS and blasts what he describes as "crazy activists" who speak at council meetings, saying they bully the council:

Columbia's city council is set to vote tonight on a camera platform called FUSUS. Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones strongly supports the plan. He describes FUSUS as a platform that allows CPD to take video that is already out in the community and bring them into one platform. FUSUS allow you to decide if and how you participate, regarding cameras. Critics worry the cameras will target minorities. Chief Jones addressed the issue in-detail during a live interview on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." He joined us in-studio:

He is a successful entrepreneur (Shooter Detection Systems), CEO (Milcom Security Solutions), and a sought-after board advisor (Fusus). He is adept at identifying needs and finding the means to deliver value. It isn't a surprise then, that he is flying to the border of Poland and Ukraine on Saturday, May 28, to attempt to make life a little bit easier for the soldiers and the refugees of this terrible conflict. We have a great conversation with Christian Connors who traveled to Medyka Poland to assist the World Central Kitchen in their efforts to provide Ukrainian refugees with food. He has a GoFundMe page to buy items that bring a smile to the faces of these amazing people. These items include Coca-Cola, M&Ms, Red Bull, kid's toys and new mother's assistance such as diapers and pacifiers. Christian pays for his own travel costs and 100% of the funds go to buying items that are not available at the border crossing. Wouldn't it be amazing if The Great Conversation community takes action on this idea by donating to the World Central Kitchen and/or the GoFundMe fundraiser? Ideas shape markets. Ideas can change the world.
