Hawk breaks down the rapidly escalating conflict between the Pentagon and Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude model, after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth demanded that Anthropic remove two core safety restrictions from its terms of service. Those restrictions prohibit using Claude for mass surveillance of American citizens and for programming weapons to fire without human intervention. Hegseth labeled these protections "woke" and threatened to terminate Anthropic's $200 million Defense Department contract and blacklist the company as a danger to all defense supply chains unless Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei agreed to his demands. Amodei said no. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's Grok chatbot, which previously generated child sexual imagery and declared itself "Mecca Hitler," has been cleared for use in classified Pentagon settings. Sam Altman of OpenAI is now positioning his company to step into the gap, exploring whether ChatGPT models can meet Pentagon requirements while maintaining safety guardrails. Hawk also covers the broader AI reality check happening in corporate America. Mark Benioff of Salesforce laid off 4,000 employees to replace them with AI and now says he regrets it. Jack Dorsey just cut 50% of Square's workforce for the same reason. Studies suggest 95% of deployed AI agents in corporate settings are ineffective. From gun control to putting cameras on every street with facial recognition while mandating 5 years of social media history to enter the country which is basically social credit. This is just further evidence that consistency is not possible within the collectivist paradigm of left and right. What does it mean for a government to declare its citizens 'dead' while they still live? Following the failed 2016 coup, the Turkish AKP government implemented sweeping powers against some 152,000 of its citizens. These Kanun hükmünde kararnameli ('emergency decreed') were dismissed from their positions and banned for life from public service. With their citizenship rights revoked, Seçkin Sertdemir argues these individuals were rendered into a state of 'civic death'. This study considers how these authoritarian securitisation methods took shape, shedding light on the lived experiences of targeted people. Meet the speakers and chair Seçkin Sertdemir is a Visiting Fellow in the European Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research focuses on ideas of democracy, and current problems of political philosophy such as civil disobedience and political rights. Zerrin Özlem Biner is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at SOAS working at the intersection of political and legal anthropology. She is author of 'Dispossession: Violence and Precarious Co-existence in Southeast Turkey' (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020). David T. Beito's most recent book, and the subject of this conversation, is The New Deal's War On the Bill of Rights: The Untold Story of FDR's Concentration Camps, Censorship, and Mass Surveillance (buy it through the link!), published by the Independent Institute in 2023. The presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal have now largely passed from living memory.  When I was in junior high school in the 1970s, however, many of the teachers had not only lived through the New Deal but remembered it as an almost sacred moment.  We watched scratchy black-and-white movies in class about the great success of FDR's New Deal in ending the Great Depression, the soundtrack blaring with “Happy Days Are Here Again.”  David Beito's book is about the dark side of all that, the almost crazy abuse of American civil liberties under FDR's administration.  FDR's Congressional allies, including future Supreme Court Justices Hugo Black and Sherman Minton, rifled through individual tax returns and more than 3 million Western Union telegrams to find dirt on outspoken opponents of the New Deal. They proposed criminalizing "false" news. They used regulatory power and private coercion to drive virtually any criticism of the New Deal from the new medium of radio.  And, finally, they put more than 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent into concentration camps built by the famous Works Progress Administration, and kept them there long after any argument for military necessity had passed.  And that isn't the end of it by any means! This morning, Joe discussed the CBDC Anti-Surveillance Act, criticizing it for not truly benefiting the people since it still allows CBDCs as legal tender with Congress's permission. He also touched on the WHO's pandemic treaty and its negative implications for UN countries. After a break, Joe welcomed guest Peymon Mottahedeh, founder of FreedomLawSchool.org. They discussed the CBDC Anti-Surveillance Act and the promising End the Fed Act by Thomas Massie, highlighting the potential benefits of ending the Fed for government, economy, and citizen freedom. They also talked about the legal obligation to pay federal income tax and methods to avoid jail for non-filers. Joe then covered President Trump's rally in the Bronx, noting the diverse support and media acknowledgment of Trump's growing backing. He mentioned layoffs at Media Matters and the ongoing second civil war among the people.
