This week on Courage to Create, I interviewed the fabulous Gia Gunn! I met Gia a few months ago, and shortly after, she came to my Woman Unleashed Retreat - and we totally hit it off! In the interview, we shared some laughs and lots of tears as she shared her incredible life story. Gia is a proud Japanese American Trans Woman. Her life wasn't always so straightforward as she navigated first from being a gay male to crossing dressing to doing drag, eventually transitioning to a woman. I learned so much from Gia in this interview - and what she really drove home was this message that staying true to who you are may not always win the majority of the crowd, but standing out strong and bright is what wins at the end of the day! In our conversation: Gia shares her journey to womanhood and how she navigated from being a gay male to crossing dressing to doing drag and eventually transitioning to a woman. We talked about how supportive her parents were from an early age and how they created a safe space for her to be whatever she wanted to be! Gia Gunn, famed, outspoken Drag Race contestant steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her home in WeHo, Gia is here to tell it all. We would expect nothing less from one of Drag Race's most outspoken contestants in the history of the show! Let us start at the beginning. Gia takes us back to the first time she did drag, what that was like, what prompted her to “try” and where her infamous name “Gia Gunn” comes from. Think Project Runway! Gia also opens up about the first time she became aware of her “trans identity” and what that was like to deal with at a young age. Flash forward to Season Six of RuPaul's Drag Race, Gia explains how she got involved with the Iconic hit TV show and why Season Six was the right time to participate. Drag Race star Gia Gunn has opened up for the first time about postponing her transition surgery to compete on the latest season of All Stars. Gia Gunn is a drag performer, artist, and activist originally from the suburbs of Chicago. She is best known for appearing on Season 6 of "RuPaul's Drag Race" and Season 4 of "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars." Growing up, Gia was very in touch with her Japanese heritage, and studied Japanese classical dance for many years. In middle school, Gia began to realize she didn't quite fit in with her peers, and during senior year of high school, she was introduced to queer culture. After witnessing her first drag queen performance, Gia began performing in drag herself. It was a way she felt she could truly express herself in a way that was accepted. Despite originally not wanting to audition, Gia's life changed when she was cast "Drag Race." Since her first stint on the show, Gia has come out as transgender, and has began to shift her focus towards being an activist for her community and using her platform to share her journey to help others embrace their true selves.
