Immunic Inc Chief Scientific Officer Hella Kohlhof sheds light on her crucial role and the groundbreaking strides being made in the scientific world ahead of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on 11 February. As CSO, Kohlhof is pivotal in crafting the scientific strategy for Immunic's projects, focusing on understanding molecular actions, ensuring safety in preclinical regulatory work, and developing biomarkers for early activity indications. Her responsibilities extend beyond internal operations to engaging with stakeholders, including investors and scientists, highlighting the collaborative essence of scientific progress. Kohlhof told Proactive her passion for science was ignited in her school days, fascinated by the intricate mechanisms of viruses. This curiosity led her from working as a lab technician to pursuing advanced studies in biology, culminating in a PhD focused on viral behavior. Her journey wasn't without challenges; she recalls a noteworthy incident underscoring the gender biases in science, which taught her the importance of resilience and not taking gendered assumptions personally. For young women aspiring to careers in science, Kohlhof emphasizes the power of curiosity and the willingness to seize opportunities, even in the face of uncertainty. She advocates for a fearless approach to learning and exploration, underscoring that achievements in science come from a blend of passion and perseverance. #ImmunicInc #WomenInScience #ScientificInnovation #HellaKohlhof #Biotech #ScienceCareers #FemaleScientists #MolecularBiology #PreclinicalResearch #ScienceEducation #STEM #PhDinBiology #Virology #ScientificResearch #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience #CareerAdvice #WomenInSTEM #Biotechnology #ScientificStrategy #RegulatoryWork #Biomarkers #QualityManagement#proactiveinvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

"Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance." says the UN as it launches its 8th year for Women in Science. To mark the day, in the lead up to Women's Day on 8 March, Research Luxembourg will release six videos following six female scientists in various stages of their life's work. Anyone who knows me knows I love science. And so it's a delight to host a show dedicated to the UN's eighth International Women and Girls in Science Day - 11th February. The theme this year is: "Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance. I.D.E.A.: Bringing communities Forward for sustainable and equitable development" Why is it still important to have this conversation and shine a light on women in science? Well, there are many sets of statistics to show that women represent about a third of researchers, and yet only about 12% are members of national science academies. In AI, only one in five professionals are female. There's a pay gap for female researchers and their career's tend to be shorter, their work under-represented in high-profile journals and - for whatever reason - fewer women enter managerial positions in science and engineering. Research Luxembourg has collaborated with the Ministry for Equality (MEGA) for the second year running to release a set of six videos featuring six female scientists at various stages of their career. The theme is 'Be Brave - Women [& Girls] in Science and you can watch the trailer here. https://youtu.be/frIU2TrookA The goal of the campaign is to tell a variety of stories, and the many paths of women in science; to inspire and to give role models. You can see all the videos on the websites of Research Luxembourg and FNR over the course of the coming month up to 8 March, Women's Day. researchluxembourg.org/en/women-science-2023/ https://www.fnr.lu/womeninscience What is Research Luxembourg? Research Luxembourg is a joint initiative of the main actors in Luxembourg public research, with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research: Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), University of Luxembourg, Luxinnovation and Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). As equality of educational opportunity is one of the pillars of the national research and innovation strategy, gender equality is a central aim for developing a fair research environment in which all talents can foster excellence. Research Luxembourg is represented in our studio conversation by Marc Schiltz, CEO of FNR. This campaign features six women and two of them join me in the studio: Sallam Abualhaija,a research scientist working on AI with software engineering at the University of Luxembourg's Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust, SnT; and Anne-Marie Hanff, a nurse now working towards her PhD with LIH to protect people with Parkinson's disease degenerating over time. I am also joined by Kristel Weinreich, Senior Recruitment Officer at LIST, and Carole Blond-Hanten, sociologist at LISER in the Labour Market Department. Please do subscribe to the podcast, rate and review on Apple and Spotify! I'd love to know what shows you want more of, and what ideas or guests you enjoy so that I can tailor my show to suit your requests.

‘Breakthrough' In Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Research Is Misleading Last week, headlines made the rounds in online publications and social media that there was a massive breakthrough in research about SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. A study out of Australia concluded that babies who died of SIDS had significantly lower levels of an enzyme called BChE. This study was met with cheers by people desperate to understand why SIDS happens. But many experts say we need to pump the brakes on the celebration. While the study may be promising, it was based on a very limited sample—just 26 babies who had died of SIDS. A variety of factors could explain their different levels of BChE, says Dr. Rachel Moon, a professor of pediatrics and SIDS research at the University of Virginia. Moon explains that there are two major hurdles for researchers trying to investigate the causes of SIDS. First, as grieving parents are very unlikely to consent to their deceased child's use in medical studies, the sample pool for genetic testing of SIDS death is incredibly small. Secondly, there are just very few people who specialize in the syndrome; Dr. Moon suspects there are one hundred or fewer researchers of SIDS in the entire world. She joins guest host John Dankosky to discuss how these factors make it hard for researchers to study why some babies continue to die prematurely.   Period Tracking Apps And Digital Privacy In A Post-Roe World After the leak of the Supreme Court's pending decision on Roe v. Wade law, digital privacy experts have been raising an alarm about digital privacy. Millions of people use apps to track their menstrual cycles—the popular app Flo has 43 million active users. And Clue, a similar company, says they have 12 million monthly active users. But in recent weeks, many on social media have been urging others to delete their period tracking apps, saying that the data you share on them could be potentially be used against you if abortion becomes criminalized in states across the country. Guest host John Dankosky talks with Laura Lazaro Cabrera, legal officer at Privacy International, about what kinds of data period tracking apps collect, how personal health data can be used in court, and how to protect your digital privacy.   How Can We Inspire The Next Generation Of Female Scientists? The work of pioneering female scientists like Marie Curie and Jane Gooddall have served as an inspiration to many aspiring scientists. But less well-known are the early and mid-career female scientists who are working to answer some of today's biggest scientific questions. A new book from National Geographic offers kids and tweens a look into the day-to-day lives of women working in the fields of volcanology, biology, anthropology, astronomy, and more. A central theme among the profiles is persistence in the face of obstacles. Producer Shoshannah Buxbaum talks with Clare Fiesler, conservation biologist, National Geographic explorer, and co-author of No Boundaries: 25 Women Explorers and Scientists Share Adventures, Inspiration, and Advice.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

This day annually marks the resolution set by the United Nations in 2015 to celebrate women and girls in science and raises awareness of the gender gap in the field of Science and Technology. The gender gap in science still holds women back. According to UNESCO's Science Report, only 1/3 of science-based researchers are female. While >70% of health and social care workers are women, they are paid ~11% less than their male counterparts. But the world needs science, and science needs women and girls! For the entirety of human history, women and girls have contributed to advancement across the vast range of scientific disciplines. And as we celebrate those achievements and contributions, we recognize that science and gender equality are both vital for the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past decades, the global community has made significant efforts to break down barriers for women and girls in science. In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015. Still a significant gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines all over the world. Even though women have made tremendous progress towards increasing their participation in higher education, they are still under-represented in these fields. So, in today's conversation we will give space to amazing and pioneering women who are leading the charge to redefine the STEM world and create more access for women and girls globally.

President Michael D. Higgins marked the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science with a special message for 11 February 2021. In his message, the President said that the International Day provides an appropriate occasion “to celebrate the contribution of women to the field of science, to acknowledge how important a contribution it is, and to highlight the ongoing need for action to ensure the voices of women and girls are heard more widely and at every level in the world of science.” Noting that, despite progress in recent years, a significant gender gap remains, the President highlighted a number of issues that affect women’s participation in science and technology, to be addressed urgently. In his message, President Higgins also addressed “every young girl who is wondering if a future in science is for her”, by highlighting the many positive female role models and telling aspiring female scientists to “carry your knowledge and skills with pride.” Throughout his term in office, President Higgins has drawn attention to the gender gap in the science and technology sector, saying society must do more to harness the creativity and innovation of all women and girls, by investing in inclusive STEM education and research, and structuring career paths in science and technology that do not exclude women and girls at any stage of their career. The President has also consistently argued that the benefits of research and scientific discoveries must be shared equitably and made available to poorer nations - a point the President reiterated throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, where access to vaccines to date has been very unevenly spread among countries.
