Hey guys!I'm back one more time before July wraps-up, and this time I'm back with a guest! Yay!So I caught up with an old friend over brunch up about two weeks ago and decided that we needed to continue the conversation over a podcast episode. We had so much fun recounting how we met (during NYSC) and sharing how we've been full-blown thrust into Adulthood since then! This guest is none other than Ibukun Joyce Aiyemo - Former Marketing Lead at Burger King, Nigeria & current MBA student at the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia. She is also popularly dubbed as The Ibk Global on Instagram. She reminisces on building a successful marketing career with juggernauts like Domino's Pizza, Cold Stone Creamery, Pinkberry and Burger King back in Lagos, Nigeria. Also, her decision to uproot her life and chase an MBA dream in the United States, and how she navigates her way through the challenges of business school. From tough academic requirements to adapting to a foreign culture, then financial planning for an MBA, the harsh realities of job interviews, and the importance of creating relationships that matter. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed recording! With love from Lagos, New York City & Toronto,Tolu & Ibk P.S: I mighty forgot to introduce myself to our new listeners at the beginning of the episode. Frankly speaking, I'm the coolest person you'd ever meet and you can watch me prove that right (or wrong, haha) here. I hope you come back for another episode too. Enjoy! :) Support the showThere's always more to the story :) Follow on Instagram @thenonimmigrantstudent so you don't miss any deets!

Notably, in 2011, she worked with Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission on security sector reform and from 2014-2018 she led and provided technical support to an Afghan coalition of prominent criminal justice reform groups and government officials, to draft and pass, the country's groundbreaking anti-torture legislation. She is currently the Acting Director for Law Exchange with the Open Society Foundations' Public Health Program, where she works on legal empowerment initiatives that improve health justice for marginalized groups. Since the beginning of the crisis, and in her personal capacity, she has co-led Afghan Legal Empowerment Portal, aiming to secure a safe right of passage for all Afghan grassroots activists left behind. Throughout her career, Farnoosh has sought to honor the work of justice defenders who came before her, build on collective local wisdom, and do the deliberate and careful intersectional work in pursuit of gender justice. In her view, it is indeed a feminist's job to counter the alarming overuse of policing, surveillance, detention, and oppressive measures that replicate in the war on terror, the war on drugs, and the war against migrants. H HASHEMIAN   RANA HAZARAT Rana Hazarat is an Afghan-Canadian human rights lawyer based in Vancouver, BC. She arrived with her family to Canada as refugees. She is of Tajik and Hazara descent. I currently work for Lawyers for Human Rights as a legal intern, which is funded by the Canadian Bar Association and Global Affairs Canada. She works with LHR's Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme. She  is also working on several national and international initiatives in response to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, such as assisting with the resettlement of Afghans in Canada, facilitating refugee sponsorship applications, and drafting public legal education materials, calls to actions, and policy papers.  You can reach Rana by contacting the podcast if you have questions or a message for her.    ILAHA ELI OMAR Ilaha Eli Omar is an Afghan-American grassroots mobilizer with over 20 years of international development work and on-the-ground experience in Afghanistan, Haiti, and Kenya. For this episode, Eric shares the lessons he's taken away from Obvious Adams, which was first published in 1916. From his own experience in higher education, specifically in the field of MBA programs in world-renowned institutions, Eric has seen both the respect the book has garnered in business academia and the impact of the book on his own life and work. Obvious Adams offers a great lesson in how often we overcomplicate our lives, work, and business, forfeiting the choices that can be more obvious for the more complex path. Eric is the founder of Candidate Coach, a boutique admissions consulting and career coaching agency, working with people worldwide, who seek admissions into top-ranked MBA or masters programs. As the former Director of Recruitment for the Global MBA program at ESSEC Business School, he leverages his vast network and knowledge of the industry to provide customized services for his clients. Eric has presented as the keynote speaker at various colleges and universities on the topic of careers, and is also the author of the MBA guide book series, including "Getting into an MBA in France", "Getting into an MBA in the UK", and "Getting into an MBA in the USA" (coming out in November). Some highlights from the episode: · Even when we know what we should do, we still put things off – a practice Eric and I can still be guilty of. · What we're called to – what we should be doing and is most natural and fulfilling – can come to us in a roundabout (globe-trotting) way – as Eric experienced in his career. · There can be power in reaching into the unknown, starting form scratch, and designing a new world for ourselves. Even without having read this book (yet), do you tend to take the most obvious path in life, work, and leadership – or do you tend to overcomplicate both the resources you have and what it is you want? I talk to Sebastian Ewel, originally from Bolivia who is marveled by creativity, whether in a business setting, as he is an aspiring entrepreneur, or in the arts, as a hobby musician, Lana Snyder who has always been surrounded by a family in psychology, and Carlos Navas who wants to influence the strategy of healthcare companies to better serve their consumers. I talk to Raagini Bhalla who wants to use her MBA to better understand the human psyche, Luke Duffy who is getting his MBA to try to relaunch his career after having his path derailed by COVID-19, and Tallia Popowycz who is also a pilates coach at [solidcore] as she pursues her degree. I talk to Sachin Kumar who is passionate about cross-cultural communication and inclusivity in today's increasingly diverse business world, Millicent Li who hopes her passions, values, and identity remain her guiding light as she finds her way through a new career journey, and Kaihan Lin who has lived and worked in the U.S., Singapore, and more recently, China, pre-MBA. I talk to Camila Zamalloa who began her career in the Peruvian sports industry before creating journals that celebrate the beauty of the universe, Naomi Davidar, a biopsychology major, and Alem Bekele, an entrepreneurial first-generation American from Ethiopia who is making a difference back home. We all talk about what we've learned about our own mental health between undergrad and grad school, how competition in a school setting can influence our mental health, and advice for our younger selves.

Today's discussion is a LinkedIn LIVE recording of the Data Binge Podcast featuring Dr. Angus Hervey, Political Economist and co-founder of Future Crunch. Future Crunch, based out of Australia, is a think-tank focused on fostering intelligent and optimistic thinking, inspiring enthusiasm and excitement for technology, and empowering people to contribute to an inclusive future.I came across Gus in a Global MBA learning event where he led a presentation focused on the adaptability quotient, or one's ability to overcome challenges by quickly determining what's relevant in the current era of knowledge. The interest of Gus's work doesn't stop there, Future Crunch is really trying to get people excited about technology again, as it exists within every layer of our lives, and as it tends to get mostly negative attention - there is another story to tell. Future Crunch disperses a phenomenal newsletter based on optimistic events happening in and around our planet, in an attempt to change the stories of the 21st century, by changing the stories we tell ourselves. In this discussion, Gus brings together his interests across economics, politics, and science, to weave together a new perspective on human kinds future, how to prepare for it, how to understand it, and how we can all look to empathize, entertain, and contribute to a novel and wonderful, narrative for our species. Key Takeaways [10:11] The mission of Future Crunch, optimism, story-telling, and technology[09:53] Why “Giving a Damn” is different than talking about impactful causes – the Fondo Guadalupe Musalem, and other groups and charities of importance. [15:56] The history of story-telling, and the criticality of stories and their importance to the human existence across the 21st century [18:50] Modern journalism and how it has evolved [23:36] 5G and the opportunities represented by a new future of data movement [28:46] On understanding the future of technology: Language, Fire, and Medicine [37:53] The applicability of the Language, Fire and Medicine Framework and how it can help leaders and organizations navigate in both business and innovation [45:37] Why change moves very slowly, until it moves very quickly: the Adaptability quotient [49:15] On efficiency and adaptability in adjusting to change, examples of how the US Navy is building talent pools to handle more fluid work environments. [54:04] What people and organizations can do to embrace unexpected and high-velocity change [55:03] How to contact Angus and Future Crunch [56:10] Given unlimited resources, what global challenges would Angus attempt to solve Quotes [08:27] “If you're working at IT, if you're working in digital, you can always keep on improving. There is always another line of code that you can write; there is always another optimization that you can put in there. But I think when it comes to designing built environments or when it comes to developing new energy systems when it comes to just figuring out a way that people work together, sometimes it is possible to say, “okay, we nailed that. That's fixed, and we can move on.” - Angus Hervey [15:21] “So really, it is a community thing. I'd love to take credit for it, but the reason that we can support these charities is that we have around 2,000 subscribers that think that the content that we produce is worth paying for, and then we can take some of that money and put that money where our mouth is and give a damn than just talking the talk.” – Angus Hervey [34:06] “Energy touches everything. You look in the room around you wherever you are right now, every single object in this room, if you can have the cost of energy required to produce that object, you're suddenly talking about a whole new type of economy.” – Angus Hervey Resources: Future Crunch Website: https://futurecrun.ch/ Future Crunch Twitter: https://twitter.com/future_crunch Future Crunch Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/futurecrunch/ Additional Featured Podcasts: Open the Pod Bay Doors: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/e106-angus-hervey-future-crunch/id1246074250?i=1000505737408 Dr Angus Hervey - Future Crunch: Purpose and The Adaptability Quotient: https://www.rebeccatapp.com/decodingpurposepodcasts1/2019/12/10/dr-angus-hervey-future-crunch-purpose-and-the-adaptability-quotient Chemex Coffee Maker (the ultimate example of perfect design): https://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/coffeemakers.html *The views and opinions expressed in this discussion are those of the guests and do not necessarily reflect the official position of their employer, Microsoft"  ____ Thank you for listening! --------------------------------   Join the **New Monthly Newsletter** - Data Binge REFRESH: https://www.derekwesleyrussell.com/newsletter   Interested in starting your own podcast? In this episode, I sit down with a friend - a curious traveler & an education advocate - Mack Moyer. We talk about his lessons & adventures that came from his decision to quit a well paying corporate job to spend a year back packing around the world (at the time this was recorded it was 99 countries) , and as I am typing this he is in his 100th spot - Costa Rica - enjoying remote work and the sun! If anyone knows a thing or two about going out of their comfort zones, it is definitely Mack! You can follow his travels @where_is_mack About Mack: Mack Moyer was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He graduated from Salisbury University with an undergraduate degree in Marketing before moving to Seoul, South Korea at the age of 23, to be an English Teacher at a private academy. What was meant to only be a year abroad, turned into a significant chapter in his life that lasted 8 years and spanned several countries. Mack found that he loved being a teacher and he enjoyed the expat life. However, at the age of 30, Mack was given the opportunity to leverage his business education, as well as his experience in the classroom to work as a Sales Manager in Saudi Arabia for a large educational publishing company. During this time Mack also completed a Global MBA through the University of Manchester (Dubai campus). After 4 years working as a Sales professional, and 8 years in the Middle East, Mack decided to follow a dream of his. He quit his 6-figure salaried job, sold all of his belongings, packed one big rucksack, and set off on an 18-month backpacking trip around the world. This trip took him through more than 30 countries, across 5 continents. During this time Mack was able to cross off many of his bucket list items, such as dive in the Galapagos, attend the Russian World Cup, sail among the Greek Islands, and trek the mountains of Borneo to see orangutans in their natural habitat; all the while making friends with countless people across numerous cultures. These days Mack has settled down back in America (NYC to be exact) and continues to work as a Sales professional for a French-American EdTech startup. He is very happy working for a company that has made proven impact towards improving literacy rates among young learners, however he believes that he will probably go back to being an expat when this chapter of his life is over. ______________________ About your host: Elena Agaragimova is the co-founder of Bessern (https://www.bessern.co/)

John Samuel, chief innovation architect at LCI Tech, and Nicole Samuel, director at Gartner, Inc., met in a macroeconomics class while pursuing a Global MBA degree at the GW School of Business. They married after graduation and now live in North Carolina with their two children. In this episode, we learn about their careers before GWSB and why they both chose the school's MBA program. John and Nicole also share how they met and how they each overcame specific obstacles to succeed personally and professionally.
