Apart from incentivising market participants to secure the network through inflationary rewards, many consider staking as an equivalent of stock dividend yield. As a result, although Bitcoin is regarded as digital gold, protocols are looking for ways to increase its utilisation in DeFi and, ultimately, generate yield. Nowadays, while newer networks are struggling to attract investors and sustain a healthy, decentralised validator set, more established blockchains capture the lion's share of PoS actors. However, in a constant race for profit basis points, centralised consolidation of stakers seems inevitable. Join us for a fascinating discussion on the staking landscape and the challenges it may present to decentralisation.Topics covered in this episode:Increasing BTC utilization through BTC yieldLooping yield productsThe maturation of the staking marketChorus One staking portfolioHow to prevent staking consolidationRetail vs. institutional-grade operatorsSymbiotic, Eigenlayer & restaking yieldEpisode links:Mirko Schmiedl on XTobias Jung on XStaking Rewards on XSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. Restaking is the hot new DeFi gamble — but do you really know how it works? In this quick breakdown, we cover how EigenLayer lets you double-stake ETH, rent out Ethereum's trust, and take on massive hidden risk. It's brilliant. It's dangerous. It's very, very crypto.

Ethereum's transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake created a unique set of conditions (i.e. lack of protocol-level delegation, 32 ETH requirement, long exit queues, etc.) that led to Lido's liquid staking model to gain huge traction, significantly eclipsing other LSD providers on native PoS chains. stETH added on-demand liquidity, bypassing withdrawal windows, while also increasing DeFi utilization and increasing yields. Moreover, by allowing users to stake any amount of ETH in pools, it removed the requirement for 32 ETH increments, ultimately improving decentralisation through long tail distribution of individual stakers. Lido V3 introduces modular stVaults which enable staking customization. This allows professional actors, such as institutional stakers, to have granular control over validators, MEV and other parameters, diversifying their investment strategies.Topics covered in this episode:Hasu's backgroundDiscovering LidoLiquid staking and the early days of LidoWhy liquid staking gained traction on EthereumThe evolution of LidoInitial decentralisation concerns and the importance of dual governanceRestakingLido V3 and vaultsInstitutional staking & ETFsEthereum's ‘crisis' and its valuesEpisode links:Hasu on XLido on XSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. Bootstrapping and maintaining a validator set can be a challenging endeavour, especially for projects that are in search of a product market fit. However, this does not mean one should abandon the ethos of decentralisation in favour of a more streamlined centralised approach. The notion of shared security had been previously explored in the Cosmos ecosystem, but Symbiotic takes it a step further, making it readily available for any project, regardless of its native blockchain, through restaking. In a world where everyone chases every basis point of marginal return, core values are often overlooked. The emergence of liquid staking protocols made stake delegation a norm rather than an exception. The hassles of running their own node and dealing with slashing risks were often too much of a burden for regular users. Welcome to episode 13 of EigenLayer Unlocked, for a very insightful conversation about building the correct mental model for restaking and crypto-economic security. We had the opportunity to sit down with Tarun Chitra from Gauntlet, who brought mental models, analogies, and key information to the table about how restaking mechanisms work, what makes EigenLayer's economics operate, and why incentives play a crucial role in this evolving ecosystem. We kicked things off by exploring the concept of valuing restaked security from one of Tarun's recent blog posts. Tarun explained how the decisions made by node operators—especially around which AVSs they allocate to—can have a ripple effect across the network. It's not just about individual services; these choices can influence the broader stability of the ecosystem. A key part of our discussion was understanding the risks of cascading attacks. Tarun highlighted how failures in one AVS can impact others, leading to potential systemic issues. To prevent this, it's essential to design security measures that address both local (individual service) and global (network-wide) risks. We discussed the analogy towards traditional finance, mortgages, and bonds to help conceptualize these concepts. One of the most interesting points was about EigenLayer's introduction of a new security model featuring "unique stake." This model helps mitigate risks by allowing specific ETH reserves to be slashable only by particular services, providing a layer of isolation and addressing concerns about overlapping slashing risks. We also discussed the power law as it applies to AVSs—some thriving by transitioning from incentive-based models to sustainable revenue streams, while others might not make the cut longer-term. If you're looking to get a clearer understanding of how restaking economics works, this is the podcast for you. Website: https://therollup.co/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1P6ZeYd.. Welcome to the 1st episode of EigenLayer Unlocked. This episode is meant to be a primer into how restaking fundamentally works, the key players in the restaking system, and why EigenLayer is leading this category today. At its core, restaking allows users to earn additional rewards by taking on slashing risks, offering a way to maximize risk-adjusted returns. EigenExplorer introduces a novel concept through operator quorums (now referred to as operator sets), which bring more granularity and customization to how services, operators, and stakers interact. These operator sets create tiers of services, allowing for more tailored, efficient staking choices that can yield vastly different outcomes depending on the strategy employed. One of the standout points in today's discussion is the direct liquid restaking system EigenExplorer is building, designed to simplify decision-making for stakers by enabling them to delegate assets to specific services. This streamlines the process, making it easier for stakers to manage risk and rewards without diving into complex configurations. Additionally, strategy managers play a crucial role in helping stakers navigate this space, acting as market makers who optimize yield and manage risks across different services. As the market matures, data transparency and better tools for managing operator quorums will be key to improving market efficiency and ensuring everyone benefits from these innovations. As the first episode in the series, we wanted to prioritize an understanding of restaking and its core parts. Throughout the next several weeks, we will dive into the deep technical weeds of AVSs and rollups using EigenDA. Onwards and upwards. Curious about restaking your ETH? Want to earn rewards while doing so? Introducing, YieldNest! For episode 417, Co-founder and CEO Amadeo Brands explains how YieldNest works and the benefits of restaking your ETH on YieldNest. YieldNest delivers an easy solution for ETH holders to natively restake their ETH into EigenLayer and earn rewards while maintaining liquidity. Restaking with YieldNest is totally liquid due to the use of Native Liquid Restaking Tokens (nLRTs) and Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs) representing their restaked, yield-generating ETH or ERC20 tokens. YieldNest simplifies restaking by offering intuitive, risk-adjusted strategies, making it accessible to both novice and experienced users. The massive success of the recently approved spot Bitcoin ETF showed tremendous interest from large institutional players. Even despite negative takes in public appearances, behind the curtain, more and more ‘smart money' accumulate $BTC, either directly or through ETF shares. The same is to be expected for Ethereum, yet uncertainty still looms due to its proof-of-stake consensus model and, ultimately, staking yield. While crypto natives quickly embraced both ETH staking as well as liquid staking, institutions could not justify the higher risk profile and lack of regulatory compliance.
