A project so successful, more benches are to be installed in other places. Another part of the project is a further development of a Junior Achievement corporation (Swedish UF-företag) where location information is sent to a relative or a central by clicking a button installed in a scrunchie. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The Quadra Island Foundation recently distributed $110,000 to four non-profit organizations. In today's interview the foundation's Vice Chair, Marc Doll, explains the rationale behind those choices and a little of what he expects the money to accomplish. Marc Doll: “There was this recognized recognition of how much this province uses and depends on nonprofits. So the government of British Columbia put together a pool of $25 million, which went to Vancouver Foundation. From the Vancouver Foundation, it trickled down to foundations like the Quadra Foundation, Cortes Community Foundation and Campbell River Foundation. It was administered at the local level by local foundations, but from a pool of money that came from the British Columbia government.” “We advertised - online through local media, press releases etc - to indicate that we had this fund of $110,000 to distribute locally. We were almost triple subscribed, we had about $300,000 in total applications.” “So to whittle that down we hired a coordinator, Jennifer Banks Doll, who headed up the grant committee. She was tasked with finding a committee populated by regular Quadra Island citizens and a board member or two. They then went through the grants. We had a way of weighting the grants in terms of what was going to be the most returned to the community and from there allocated the grants to the four successful applicants.” Cortes Currents: Tell us a little about each of the successful applicants. Marc Doll: “There were 4 successful applicants. There was Quadra Circle that received about $54,000. Quadra Circle is an organization on Quadra that serves the seniors population. They have weekly meetings. They offer help to seniors that are housebound, need medical, exercise, or social gatherings. They have quite a portfolio of things that they do, and they were looking to build their capacity through the hiring of a part time Executive Director. The largest allocation went to them.” “The Quadra Island Seniors Housing Society received about $30,000. Again, I believe it was for a part time Executive Director. The Quadra Island Seniors Housing Society was incredibly successful. To be able to build affordable housing on Vancouver Island is an incredible task. They were able to successfully get that done a couple of years ago and I think they're looking at increasing the number of dwellings on the island. They have a waiting list in the dozens and dozens of people for the units that they were able to create. They're looking to future growth and getting paid staff to facilitate that.” “The third successful Grantee was the Quadra Island Climate Action Network, which on the island is known as ICAN. That organization is relatively new. It's been around for maybe five, six years, and their focus is building community capacity with a climate focus, and they've been doing a lot of great work on water, food security, and a bunch of different high profile projects that they've been undertaking. They are looking to, again, hire an Operations Coordinator to provide some support in all those many and varied projects that they're working on.” “The final successful grantee was the Quadra Island Recreational Society. It was a subgroup within the rec society, which operates the Wednesday lunches and the idea was to increase the capacity of that kitchen to serve the 100, 150 people that they do every Wednesday during the shoulder or the slower seasons. There were some kitchen upgrades that were going to enable them to better serve the people of Quadra. So those were the four successful grantees.” Cortes Currents: Which sectors of Quadra's population are in the greatest need? I'm thinking of age groups, but there might also be other factors which I haven't thought of.

The presenters also offered suggestions for how organizations can better support and include neurodiverse individuals in the field in a number of ways, and we're excited to chat with two more of the presenters on the show today: Tammy Schwab, manager of education and outreach for the resource management division of Fairfax County Park Authority in Virginia, and John McGovern, principal-in-charge for The WT Group, LLC Accessibility Practice. How can insurance companies deploy educational material to boost talent acquisition and retention? What skills are needed for educative insurance roles? How can we use TikTok to change persisting misconceptions about our industry? In this episode, we're very pleased to be speaking with Emma Ackers, Senior Learning Consultant at Empower Development! In conversation with Sandra Lewin, Emma highlights the opportunities available through TikTok and LinkedIn to promote the opportunities available within insurance to an external audience. Additionally, she impresses the importance of employer-employee trust as we transition into a broadly hybrid working industry. Quote of the Episode “If you want to apply for a job, but you don't think you're going to get it, just do it anyway. You need to put yourself out there. I think there's more people coming into the market now by choice than there were before. I've seen a massive shift in that, especially with the young people that I speak to now, they're actively seeking out these roles. I think the change here is… we use social media a lot more, and more effectively.” Emma suggests that recruitment across insurance may soon be on the rise as companies increasingly learn how to harness the tool of social media to better advertise the various roles and opportunities on offer in an insurance career. We need to push ourselves out of our collective comfort zone as an industry, to explore how TikTok and other social media platforms could assist us in reaching new potential talent. Empower Development offers a free course called Into Insurance for people who want to learn about the industry. In one of the most recent cohorts, 98% of the attendees were drawn to the course from TikTok, accentuating the vast amount of talent that can be accessed through such platforms. Key Takeaways Emma also highlights that social media can be deployed more effectively to educate those already within the industry. She notes that it's impossible to know everything in our industry, as it is so reactionary to broader socioeconomic shifts and is constantly changing in accordance with them. If you wish to use TikTok or LinkedIn to encourage new talent to join the industry, you shouldn't simply leap in at the deep end. It is key to devise a strategy of the type of content you would like to make. Showcasing insurance to a younger audience via social media can be achieved in so many different ways, and you don't have to chase the prevailing trends. The personal nature of such content is often what people latch onto initially, so telling people how you got into insurance is a great start. You needn't worry about whether you're saying the right things. Telling your story is what an external audience are most likely to want to hear about. Whilst working as an Operations Coordinator (amongst many other roles) at an insurance brokerage, Emma discovered that the company was struggling with compliance in relation to client assets. Many people didn't understand what the rules were, why it was important, and were making mistakes and omissions. This prompted Emma to devise some compliance-related training and deliver it to her company. She discovered that the best way to educate people about insurance topics is through anecdotes and storytelling, thereby bringing to life what can go wrong when different errors occur. This experience served as a springboard for her branching into insurance education. This is a role which may not initially come to mind when industry outsiders think of insurance. Yet, as Emma emphasises, there are so many roles that make up an insurance company. A role in this industry isn't simply limited to being in a call centre with a headset on. Her storytelling and people skills ultimately guided her to an educational insurance role. Equally, your own unique skillset will also apply to a role in insurance. Furthermore, wherever you start in the industry, you can transition into as many different roles as you like until you find one that fits. Emma argues that in our increasingly hybrid working world, it is essential that companies trust their employees. This can be achieved by affording them the flexibility to start earlier and finish earlier, or start later and finish later. Furthermore, having consistently good communication with your team, reiterating the company's broader goals and individual workers' targets can foster a positive and productive distant working environment. Best Moments/Key Quotes “I stayed in broking for a long time and progressed through lots of different roles. I've done every single role you could ever imagine. I think it's a great way to learn. I've even done credit control. I was like, ‘Yeah, I'll try it. Why not?' It was a good way to learn all the different functions in the business.” ‘There's a specific role for everybody in insurance, and I don't think a lot of people realise that.” ‘As an industry, we can do better on talking about the variety of roles [available]?' “I think about people who worked in London five days a week, [who] travelled hours to get to work. It's wild when we think about it now, that that's what used to happen… Being at home and feeling trusted, and having that flexibility, then you feel calmer as a worker. You're going to get more joy, and you're going to be more motivated, and you're going to be happier. And happier people produce better results.” Resources Why Can't I Learn Like I Used To? – Emma Ackers – CII Journal: https://thejournal.cii.co.uk/2023/06/20/why-cant-i-learn-i-used TikTok – EmpowerEmma: https://www.tiktok.com/@empoweremma TikTok – Empower Development: https://www.tiktok.com/@empower.development Empower Talks Podcast: https://shows.acast.com/empower-talks About the Guest Emma Ackers is a Senior Learning Consultant at Empower Development, which provides training for insurance professionals across the London and Company Markets. This week, Elisabeth spoke with Jazmine Holifield, a multi-hypenate Milwaukee creative who is a creative director within her own company, and also works at the Operations Coordinator at Imagine MKE. Holifield is one-half of C&B Creative, a local creative consulting company, which she founded in 2012 with longtime friend and business partner, Kayla Green. Together, they produce creative arts events, support dozens of artists and creatives (local and across the country) and provide several services such as creative brand consulting, set design and staging, event planning, project management, and more. As Operations Coordinator for Imagine MKE, she's been leading on Imagine's Arts and Economic Prosperity Study from Americans for the Arts, and also spearheads programs and events for IMKE. Jazmine Holifield was born and raised in Milwaukee. After a few years living in Dallas and Los Angeles, she returned home to Milwaukee three years ago during the pandemic, and was pleasantly surprised the find herself back in the midst of a creative community that had been building momentum since she left six year prior— stumbling into what she calls “Milwaukee's creative renaissance.” Holifield is motivated by bringing a sense of purpose to her role inside and outside of Imagine MKE, with the hopes of encouraging and supporting other creatives on their journeys. She also values the reflections from the Milwaukee creatives she works alongside, who have been building since she started her C&B Creative Brand. Finding herself today in more of a mentorship role, Holifield is encouraged by seeing the growth she's seen in her fellow creatives, and is also motivated to keep going on her own journey by seeing the impact she's had within the ecosystem in Milwaukee's creative sector. She shares words of wisdom for Milwaukee creatives who are just getting started-- urging them to "start where they are."“There's so many different shades of greatness, here.” says Holifield. In the future, she wishes to see Milwaukee's diverse creative scene flourish. If that were to happen, to her it would mean more color, more public art, more collaboration. A place that is more outwardly artistic, with a central arts district, where laughter is abundant and the culture can be a refuge from challenges and "the news". A place where artists and art are valued and respected at all levels. Holifield also hopes that when this new creative day dawns, that the professional creative opportunities that arise here will first and foremost be abundant for the native Milwaukeeans who created the conditions for flourishing with their talenta and persistance.C&B Creative High Rollers Club Jade Charon's “Gold” Liv DJ Gemini Gilly TRP (The Roses Prevail)The Brick Layers Club Jungle Gems Transitional song is an excerpt from

This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Savana Keeton. Savana is the Operations Coordinator for the Cumberland Trails Conference. Building the Cumberland Trail is a passion project for the dedicated staff of the CTC. The work is hard and it takes experts to build through the rock gardens and gorges of the Cumberland Mountains. The Cumberland Trail (CT) is a rugged, north/south, foot-traffic-only trail along the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Eastern Tennessee. Currently there is approximately 250 miles open with 50 odd miles left to complete. The trail begins at Cumberland Gap National Park on the northern border of Tennessee/Kentucky. The southern end is the “Grand Canyon” of Tennessee at Signal Mountain overlooking the Tennessee River Gorge at Chattanooga. The mission of the Cumberland Trails Conference is to provide paid and volunteer labor, equipment, supplies and vehicles to design and construct the Cumberland Trail under the auspices of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The continued development and construction of the Cumberland Trail is accomplished through a working relationship between the Cumberland Trails Conference (CTC), the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Park, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The CTC, private corporations, foundations, individuals, and others assist TDEC in raising funds for land acquisition, providing maintenance, and further developing the Cumberland Trail. Welcome to season 2, epsiode 47 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week is a special episode as I welcome back my previous guest, Chaya Pamula. Chaya is the Co-founder and CEO of PamTen Inc. and Founder of Shetek. In this episode we discuss her role as the Founder of SOFKIN (Support Organization For Kids In Need). I also interview five children who grew up in SOFKIN homes. Kranthii Vulpe lived in a SOFKIN home for 9 years and is now a Software Engineer at Electronic Arts. Kranthii was the very first child of SOFKIN and is now working for one of the most reputable companies in India. His sister, Mythri Vulpe was in a SOFKIN home for 10 years and is now working as a Product Manager for PamTen Inc. Jagdish Goud lived in a SOFKIN home for 15 years and is now a video editor and designer for Harsha Devi Productions. His brother, Parmesh Goud is still living at SOFKIN as he is working on his Bachelor's Degree in Hotel Management. Niharika Beesa still lives at SOFKIN as she is the Operations Coordinator for the organization. She has been there now for 11 years. Chaya lost her parents during her teen years. As we know those are some of the most formative years. After much thought she decided that she needed to help other children in similar situations. However, in this case she doesn't just help those who have lost family members. SOFKIN provides a safe-haven for children who are living in bad family situations. That could include abuse, neglect, or the inability of the family to afford to take care of their own children. The organization is based in Hyderbad, India and has supported over 100 children to date. They all call her Amma. That means mother. The children are not only given food, shelter, clothing, medical and education facilities, but are also given a secured home where they are cared for, guided and nurtured by the housemothers. The house mothers are battered and destitute women that are trained in cooking and caring for children, evaluated for efficiency, character, and attitude before being placed as housemothers in these homes. Each home will have 10-15 children with two housemothers. This operating model not only benefits children but also the women to be self-sufficient. SOFKIN will also ensure the children are provided special training in the field of their interest to prepare them for potential job opportunities to be able to support themselves from 18 years of age.Listen in to hear the footprint all of my guests in this episode are creating now that they want to leave behind.
