Today, we're not chasing great. We're chasing all-time, pantheon, tell-your-grandkids-about-it great. But how do you decide who belongs in that rare air? In this episode, author and golf writer Michael Arkush joins Tom Coyne to unpack The Golf 100, his bold new book ranking the game's greatest players. From icons like Jack and Tiger to overlooked names like John Ball and Joyce Wethered, Arkush details the scoring system he created and the questions he wrestled with—like how to compare Old Tom Morris to Tiger, or Mickey Wright to Annika. Arkush also shares some of the book's most surprising stories: a brash teenage U.S. Open champ vanishes into obscurity, a woman leaves the game at her peak (then comes back to duel Bobby Jones) and the time Walter Hagen became a coldblooded killer in the 1919 U.S. Open. The Golfer's Journal and this podcast are made possible by reader support. St. Andrews Links is the oldest—and most well-known—golf course in the world. Recognized as the “Home of Golf,” it's existed for over 600 years. Today we have the privilege of speaking with Gordon McKie, the Greenkeeping Operations Manager. Gordon has been at St. Andrews Links in various roles for over 27 years.  Every year, over 240,000 rounds of golf are played across their seven courses. In 1974, the golf course was handed over to be managed by the St. Andrews Links Trust. The trust is solely responsible for what happens on the golf courses, including sustainability initiatives.  St. Andrews Links is an innovative leader in environmental practices and sustainability. They evaluated their energy use and immediately began to implement changes: Installing solar panels, changing out light bulbs, and moving to the use of electric mowers and vehicles. They'll soon be invested in the latest irrigation technology to reduce water usage on the courses.  One of the challenges they face as a coastal golf course is coastal erosion. The West Sands Project was launched to protect the Links from eventually going underwater. They also introduced the West Sands Rangers Service in 2022 to protect the natural habitat, including native birds and butterflies.  Only eight greenkeepers have cared for the Old Course in between Old Man Morris and Gordon, which he feels is an honor and a privilege. Gordon is passionate about improving education opportunities for young greenkeepers and hopes he influences them to recognize the importance of sustainability and being environmentally friendly.  Topics covered: Gordon's career progression at St. Andrews Links (00:01:15 – 00:03:30) Goron joined St. Andrews in 1995 as the Deputy Head Greenkeeper on the Eden course and worked there for 5 years before moving into the Head Greenkeeper role.  Gordon spent 17 years as the Old Course manager before moving into the Greenkeeping Operations Manager role in 2023.  How the management of St. Andrews Links has evolved (00:03:31 – 00:08:17) In 1974, the golf course was handed over to be managed by the St. Andrews Links Trust. Every penny that comes into the organization is reinvested into the courses (for example, proceeds from the trust are used for free golf lessons for Juniors).  Being the steward of Old Tom Morris's famous work [00:08:18 – 00:11:42)  As only the 9th person to manage the turf, Gordon feels it's a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Old Tom Morris, heralded as the first sustainable greenkeeper. The evolution of sustainability at St. Andrews Links (00:11:43 – 00:18:03)  St. Andrews Links is an innovative leader in environmental practices and sustainability to protect their heritage and history. They launched the West Sands Project, replenishing gabions and dunes to protect against coastal erosion and preserve the Links.  They focus on educating the next generation, making sure they know what they need to do to protect their future. Winning the Scottish Golf “Sustainable Project of the Year” Award (00:18:04 – 00:24:05)  After evaluating their energy usage, they installed solar panels, changed out light bulbs to LEDs and sensor lights, and are using more electric and hybrid lawnmowers and vehicles.  They plan to update the irrigation system to take advantage of the latest technology in sprinkler heads on the Old Course to further reduce water usage.  They work with their partners to collect data to help them develop their products to better everyone in the industry.  The legacy Gordon hopes to leave for future generations (00:24:06 – 00:31:10)  Goron hopes his legacy will influence the next generation to understand the importance of sustainability and being environmentally friendly.  Resources & People Mentioned St. Andrews Links St. Andrews Links Trust Awarded Sustainable Project of the Year Connect with Gordon McKie Connect on LinkedIn Follow on Twitter Connect With Golf Sustainability LinkedIn  Facebook  Instagram X (Twitter) Email Subscribe to Golf Sustainability Apple Podcast  Spotify  Note: Timestamps provided are approximate. Less than a year after the death of his best friend Young Tom Morris, Davie Strath came to St Andrews hoping to win his first-ever Open Championship. He'd come close before, but while Strath was considered one of the three best golfers of his generation, and had been a sort of pioneer in giving up everything for a career in the very new field of professional golf, there was also something dogging his reputation: A tendency to choke in the big moment. That tendency would rise again, but that's far from the only thing marking the 1876 Open as the single strangest major championship ever contended. Played over one day in late September, it's a forgotten oddity in the tournament's storied history, and remains as vibrantly bizarre today as it must have seemed to those who watched it play out almost 150 years ago. In this week's Local Knowledge, we examine the singular career of Strath, the tragedy of his life's end, and that wild day when he had his best, and last, chance to etch his name in the history books.

The fate that has befallen Young Tom Morris, the greatest golfing talent of the 20th century, is to be known, but only in outline. His singular talent is measured today by lines on a Wikipedia entry, or the ancient scrawling of a name on the claret jug, and if anything, his star has dimmed with the passing years. But when he died on Christmas Day in 1875, just 24 years old, he left the world of golf utterly transformed by a career that ranks with the most spectacular of all time. Young Tom Morris didn't just win with absurd regularity; he transformed his sport, ushering in the era of the celebrated professional, and paved the way for the economic structure of the modern game. To study him in-depth, 150 years later, is to bring color to the massive talent and heartbreaking end of the sport's first superstar.

It begins with the first epochal performance after Tommy - John Ball's victory at Prestwick in 1890 as the first Englishman and the first amateur to win the Open Championship - and continues through to the outbreak of the Great War. If Tommy ignited the flame of golf in England, Ball's breakthrough turned that smoldering fire into a conflagration. The generation that followed would witness the game's coming of age. It would see an explosion in golf's popularity, the invention of revolutionary new balls and clubs, the emergence of professional tours, the organization of the game and its rules, a renaissance in writing and thinking about golf, and the decision that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews must always remain the sport's guiding light. Roger McStravick is a man from Northern Ireland who has been based in St Andrews for over twenty years, he has, so far, won the USGA Herbert Warren Wind Book Award on two occasions, for books focussed on Old Tom Morris and the St.Andrews Road War in 1879 (a war that involved a title dispute regarding potential encroachment onto the fabled turf of the old course). I cannot think of many other people that know as much about St Andrews, Allan Robertson, Hugh Lyon Playfair, The Open Championship, the Morris', the Park's, Jamie Anderson et al (I've left quite a few protagonists out here I know). Roger is the ideal guest to explore the genesis of modern golf and how an ancient scottish pastime has been adopted around the world. Back in the day (we're talking Old Tom Morris time), golfers would take pinches of sand or dirt and make little mounds on the tee-box to place their ball on. It was messy and inconsistent, but for years, it was the way.  A couple of early tee designs involved iron or metal stakes with some rubber cup or brush attached for the ball to sit on. Jeffery Ellis began collecting golf clubs at an early age and found that the literature that was available for up-and-coming collectors of antique golf instruments was sorely lacking. What is an ambitious and enterprising person to do, but set one's mind to creating the most definitive and authoritative publication of antique golf clubs and their history. Nothing stops Jeff Ellis—whether on an auction floor or in achieving his goals. Heck, he even created his own publishing company, Zephyr Productions, to make his dream a reality in 1997. Ellis has since published a two volume expanded edition of The Clubmaker's Art which features over 400 new images and extensive new information. Many exceedingly rare and historically important clubs have been added to every chapter in the book. The section on fakes and replicas is five times as large as that in the first edition. Mr. Ellis also recently published the history of Ping by personal invitation of the Solheim family (And The Putter Went ... PING). Ellis runs his own golf club auction site where we accepts consignments of authentic golf collectibles. His painstaking research and lifelong obsession is a gift to all hickory golf enthusiasts, now for time everlasting. He also published The Golf Club which features rare treasures made by Scotland's Old Tom Morris known as "The Grand Old Man of Golf" and Hugh Philp often called the Stradivarius of clubmakers. You will also find modern masterpieces by Ping, Spalding, Callaway, MacGregor, Titleist, Nike and others. In this episode, we discuss his early years in collecting, how prices and competition has changed in the last 30 years, and a few of the special clubs featured in his nearly 800 page compendium. With holes carved out of a quarry – and a course that really is the epitome of golf at its most natural – Cleeve Hill rides high in ranking lists and is beloved by the sport's purists. And yet, at present, that won't be enough to save it. The Gloucestershire course, laid out by Old Tom Morris, is set to close on March 31 next year. Those taking the decision to end more than 130 years of history cite financial viability – or the lack of it. But there are others who refuse to accept Cleeve Hill's fate is written and a concerted campaign is under way to save this most venerable of venues. It was a fight that was given a huge boost when a video, produced by Cookie Jar Golf, took the club's plight worldwide – gaining influential backing from course architects and legends of the sport. Now as the battle continues to reverse the closure plans, I sat down with Cookie Jar's co-owner Sam Williams and Cleeve Hill member David Allen to talk about the campaign, the club's fragile future and what can be done to keep it alive.

“When a customer comes into Pete’s Golf, we ask ourselves, “How can we help them to play golf, and to enjoy the game better?” That’s how we’ve built our reputation over the past 40 years.” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/woody-lashen-cropped.jpg)   Woody Lashen, Owner Pete’s Golf Mineola, New York In the tradition of golfing legend Old Tom Morris, Woody Lashen is a master clubfitter. And decades before the national, multi-location companies like GOLFTEC and Club Champion got into the clubfitting business, Woody and his partner Pete Makowski were providing golfers with the equipment they need to play their best. In fact, their company, Pete’s Golf — located in Mineola, New York — after more than 75,000 custom fittings, is celebrating its 40th year in business. Similar to Old Tom Morris, Woody is also an accomplished golfer, and he competes regularly in amateur tournaments. So Woody’s connection with the game, and his clubfitting skills, are rooted in his first-hand experience on the golf course, not just in the workshop. In his Golf Yeah podcast, Woody shares the details of his life’s journey; provides insights into the world of clubfitting; and offers some helpful advice for golfers who are looking to improve their scores as well as their enjoyment of the game. Show Highlights:  Woody’s road from caddying to ownership of a successful golf business How and why the clubfitting business has evolved from how clubs look, to how they perform How Woody went from being an employee to an owner at Pete’s Golf Why Woody doesn’t care that his company isn’t called “Pete’s and Woody’s Golf” (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/woody-lashen-petes-golf.jpg) What happened when Woody told PGA Tour Pro David Frost that he was making a mistake by bending his clubs How often the average golfer should consider buying new golf clubs The ONE thing that all golfers should look for when selecting a golf ball to play Why Woody did not want to tell us what clubs he carries in his own golf bag The biggest misconception that most golfers have about clubfitting Why former PGA Tour Pro Erik Compton is a source of personal inspiration for Woody Notable Quotes:  On the golf equipment industry: “It’s difficult for small manufacturers to build a better product. They might have one engineer, wile the big companies can have 50 or 100 engineers who are true rocket scientists, and multi-million dollar budgets. The USGA also has a huge book of rules that holds back innovation. That’s why so few small manufacturers survive.” On industry acceptance of clubfitting: “Right from the start, we wanted to become a member of the PGA, but the organization rejected that idea. But now, clubfitting is embraced by the PGA. So it was somewhat of a battle at first, trying to have people understand value of fitting.” On selecting what golf equipment to carry: “We speak directly to the engineers; not the marketing guys. The manufacturers give us their clubs and all the technical information. Then we do our own testing. We understand what will work what won’t. We ignore the marketing mumbo jumbo.” On maintaining his professional edge: “I play a lot of golf. To remain good at what I do, I need to be out there, on the golf course, trying different equipment under actual conditions.” On buying clubs with the latest technology: “The big golf manufacturers need to produce a new driver constantly. For exaple, Callaway every year; Titleist every two years; Ping every 18 months. But the latest technology may not be better for your game. For example, a 2018 Callaway Epic may be better for you than a 2019 Epic Flash driver.” On buying clubs at a “big box” store: “When people tell us that they were fitted for clubs at a big box...

“…I came to America to grow up with a game in which I had complete confidence.  Golf has never failed me.”  – Donald J. Ross (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Bradford-Becken.jpg)   Bradford A. Becken, Jr. President The Donald Ross Society Durham, North Carolina Brad Becken is one of a relatively small group of dedicated amateur golfers who share a common purpose: which is to safeguard the life’s work of a man from Scotland named Donald J. Ross…a man whom many consider to be the most importance influence on the game of golf in America. Serious students of the game, and of golf course architecture in particular, are well aware of the contributions of Donald Ross. But it’s fair to say that the average golfer has scant knowledge or appreciation of who Donald Ross was, or his enormous impact on the game. Hopefully, Brad Becken’s interview with Golf Yeah will increase, by some measure, the golfing public’s understanding of who the man was, and more specifically, why there is an organization called the Donald Ross Society…for which Brad Becken currently serves as President. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/donald_ross.jpg) After a distinguished career as an investment banker, working for some of the most respected firms on Wall Street, Brad served as CFO and then President of a Los Angeles-based entertainment company until his retirement in 2005. Brad will fill in the details regarding his own life’s story, and regarding the work of the Donald Ross Society…but I will disclose that his progress through the ranks of the Society has been somewhat impressive. Brad joined the organization in 2012, was elected to the board in 2016, and assumed to role of President in 2018….which suggests to me that Brad has a true calling for the Donald Ross Society…that’s been recognized by people who share his passion. Another measure of Brad’s passion: over the past 8 years, he has played on 367 courses designed by Donald Ross.   (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Pinehurst.jpeg) Pinehurst is considered by many to be Donald Ross’s greatest masterpiece.   10 Key Facts You Should Know About Donald J. Ross:  ONE: Ross was born in 1872 in Dornoch, Scotland to a family of modest means. An accomplished golfer, he was sent to St. Andrews to learn from the most highly recognized golf professional of that era, Old Tom Morris.  Ross returned to Dornoch, where he served as club professional and greenskeeper. TWO: Ross emigrated to the United States in 1899 to become club professional and greenskeeper at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. His arrival coincided with growing interest in golf in America, and the need for new courses to accommodate the invention of the Haskell wound golf ball…which traveled further and higher than gutta percha balls. THREE: Ross redesigned the Oakley course, and met member James Tufts, a successful businessman who convinced him to build a golf course on a piece of land he owned in the sandhills of North Carolina, known as Pinehurst. From then until the remainer of his life, Ross would work in New England during the summers, and in North Carolina in the winters. From Best Courses to Biggest Chokes, Most Underrated to Worst-Dressed Golfers, Golf List Mania! includes 120 lists that will inform and entertain. Includes contributions by personalities including Jack Nicklaus, David Feherty, and more, plus a Foreword by Jim Nantz. Why you'll enjoy this book: 5. Contributions from famous golf writers. You'll get the perspective from some of the best in the business. 4. Lists from the greats, including golf's "Big 3": Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. It doesn't get much better than that. 3. A walk through golf history from Young and Old Tom Morris to Tiger Woods. You'll learn a thing or two along the way. 2. There are no right answers. The fun part of this book is the debates that they spark. I'm sure there will be lists when you go, "That guy is a complete idiot." Isn't that the essence of golf and sports? 1. The next best thing to playing golf is reading about golf. You also make fewer bogeys that way. Lincicome turned professional in December 2004 at age 19, after finishing in 20th place in the LPGA qualifying school tournament to earn her tour card. Home-schooled, she had graduated from high school the previous spring. Her first victory was in the 2006 HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship, where she defeated Michelle Wie in the quarterfinals, Lorena Ochoa in the semifinals, and Juli Inkster in the final match. She captured her second win in April 2007 at the Ginn Open, again holding off Ochoa to capture the victory on the 72nd hole. In 2007, Lincicome became a member of the U.S. Solheim Cup team for the first time. In singles play, she lost to Laura Davies. Years earlier, as a 12 year-old, Lincicome had carried the scoring sign for Davies at the JCPenney Classic LPGA event, leading Davies to good-naturedly refer to Lincicome as "Sign Girl."[2] In 2009, Lincicome won the Kraft Nabisco Championship, an LPGA major, after making an eagle on the final hole to leap frog Kristy McPherson, who held a one shot lead going into the final hole.Visit the Golf Talk Radio sponsors and tell them GTRadio sent you they help make the show possible! Slickstix.com, Avila Beach Golf Resort, Blacklake Golf Resort, Adams Golf, Avila Village Inn and Dr. Tullius.  Visit Golftalkradio.com for the latest show information, contests, videos iPhone and Android Apps and more!
