One of our favorite segments on the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast over the last couple of years has been “Under the Radar” where we visit with up-and-coming pit masters. Many of them have gone on to achieve success and we visit with one on Episode 306 this week. Bo Wheless of Bocephus BBQ out of Mayetta, Kansas, was on the show two years ago. He's since won three KCBS Grand Championships, including last week's Smokin' Hot Cars & BBQ in Iola, Kan., where he soared past 700 to pick up the win. We visit with Bo this week to learn about his success and how he's been able to pull it off. We also review Memphis in May where Heath Riles earned his long-sought Grand Championship along with a third world ribs title in four years. Former MLB Player and Coach, Dave Magadan and Eric Hodson from Boars Night Out, Award-Winning BBQ Team and Rubs Maker Dave Magadan is a former Major League Baseball player and coach.  His playing career ended upon his retirement after 16 years and time spent with the New York Mets, Florida Marlins, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, Oakland A's, and San Diego Padres.  After his retirement, Dave stayed active in baseball as a hiting instructor and it was in this capacity with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 in which he helped the team win the World Series.  Dave's cousin and godfather is former MLB player and manager, Lou Piniella.  An outstanding college baseball career was recognized in 2010 as Magadan was selected for  induction into the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Since moving into the KCBS Master's division a couple of years ago, the Wades have seven Grand Championships and seven RGCs in 63 competitions. This week I wanted to share some clips and highlights of guests in Season 3! As guests shared their stories and testimonies of God's work and sovereign hand in their lives, we got to hear countless stories of the miraculous, things that only God could have done in moments of desperation, waiting, trials and more. With EACH Guest and story we were encouraged that God is entirely faithful, and despite the wildness so many of us have walked through, we really can have hope that he sees us, he knows exactly what we need, he works ALL things together for good for those who love him and are called according to his purpose and he really does LOVE AND WANT The best for us. I continue to be reminded God FAITHFULLY WORKS behind the scenes, truth ALWAYS prevails, he IS the GOD of rescue and redemption AND despite the timing we think he needs to show up in, he is RIGHT ON TIME!!! And he will continue to work behind the scenes to show up and show off! If anything over the last year I too have been encouraged that God is entirely possible of the impossible and NO THING is too hard for him! From financial provision AND projects being funded to dreams of going overseas and becoming a missionary on purpose for Him! We heard stories of second chances, God walking through valleys with us, restoration and redemption from things in the past, stories of triumph and miraculous provision attached to opportunities to play for the NFL, or be on America's Got Talent (and WIN) even take home the Grand Championship of American Ninja Warrior. From Filmmakers to authors to medical professionals living their lives for Jesus. . . One thing is certain: When we commit our lives to him, he radically walks beside us! Paul tells us about the year ahead and what it's like to chase KCBS Team of the Year honors (Rooters 'n Tooters was 4th in 2022, 5th in 2021 and 4th in 2020). Mixon's teams have taken three first place whole hogs at the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbeque Competition; has been the Grand Champion at the World Championship in Memphis three times: 2001, 2004 and 2007; and has also taken first place in the Whole Hog category at the World Championship in: 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007. First up is Bill Purvis from Chicken Fried BBQ out of Magnolia, Texas. Bill is one of the best in the competition game and he does it cooking in various sanctioning bodies. Chicken Fried earned a Grand Championship at an IBCA-sanctioned event last weekend in Houston and Bill already is looking ahead to a banner 2024. We visit with him about chicken (thighs or half-chickens, legs or wings?) and his talent in front of the camera on the Food Network show BBQ USA with host Michael Symon or on his rapidly growing Chicken Fried BBQ Youtube channel where his latest video showing how to trim a competition brisket is a fun watch.  We also check in with Richard Fergola from Fergolicious BBQ and Proud Souls Barbecue & Provisions. It's been a busy December of teaching BBQ classes and things get only busier in the new year and Richard gives a rundown of his classes and why someone should consider upping their competition game with a little education. When he first tested the competition BBQ waters in 2018, Norris “Syd” Sydnor of Good Googly Good never envisioned being a points chaser or contending for any Team of the Year honors. But when he began having big-time success in chicken a couple of years ago and got off to a great start in the bird category in 2023, Syd and wife Li took an early lead that he never relinquished. One year after winning KCBS Team of the Year honors for the first time, Ercole Chila and Uncle Pig's Barbecue Pit has brought home a Jack Daniels World BBQ Invitational championship home to New Jersey. Ercole joins us on Episode 233 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast to describe the tension and eventual elation upon learning that his team had captured one of the most-prestigious prizes on competition BBQ. We also review what's been another outstanding season for Uncle Pig's and what's ahead. Co-hosts Steve and Lyndal also talk about the demise of our hometown KCBS event, the $20,000 Ozarks BBQ Fest. It's where we got our competition BBQ start in 2015 as “Dr. L and the Meatheads,” where we took our lumps for several years and where we eventually got our first KCBS 180 and 700 pins - and nearly our first Grand Championship earlier this year. Turns out that's the last time for the event, which began a quarter-century ago under the Memphis BBQ Network banner. Summed up: It's another sad day as a great contest bites the dust, but not uncommon in today's world of shrinking quality contests. Meanwhile, we still await KCBS CEO Rod Gray to do a special-edition show with us to discuss what went wrong at the American Royal World Series of BBQ Open results. The BBQ world wants transparency and Rod has said he will give it, when he's fully researched the situation. The American Royal World Series of BBQ Open results saga continues to be a big story and on Episode 232 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, we visit with the two pitmasters most affected by the initial scoring mistakes that led to a full audit and change in the order of finish.  First up is Jordan Kirkpatrick of Janky Leg BBQ from Benton, Illinois. Fifth overall at the awards ceremony, Janky Leg was elevated to the Grand Championship after the review. Jordan reviews the rollercoaster of emotions that saw him win BBQ's largest competition while missing out on the feeling of being crowned on stage, in front of a large gathering of his peers. We also chat about the red-hot KCBS Team of the Year race that finds Janky Leg and three-time TOY Gettin' Basted entering the home stretch in an all-out duel. We also get the perspective from the team that initially was announced as the American Royal Open winner. David Ellis of Machete Boys BBQ from Minneapolis has been a class act in how he handled the situation of thinking you've won The Royal only to find out 48 hours after receiving the crown that there were errors. Relegated to Reserve Grand Champion, David talks honestly about the need for KCBS to be totally transparent about what went wrong and how they need to fix the issues to regain trust from competitors going foward. Richard Fergola has accomplished a lot of awesome things in competition barbecue, but had never won his hometown KCBS event. That all changed last weekend as Fergolicious BBQ earned Grand Championship honors at Smokin' on the Trails in Gardner, Kansas. It might go down in competition BBQ history as the “Basted Triple” or whatever clever phrase you'd like to use. But if Brad Leighninger and Gettin' Basted win a fourth KCBS Team of the Year, last weekend will be a big reason. On Episode 226 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, Brad joins us to recap his remarkable feat of cooking a Friday-Saturday doubleheader at the Death's Door Barbecue in northern Wisconsin, where he earned Grand Championship and RGC honors, then making a 12-hour haul to Paola, Kansas, for a Sunday Grand Championship at the Paola Roots Festival. The impressive three-day stretch helped solidify Gettin' Basted's Team of the Year lead. Brad also weighs in on a variety of other BBQ topics, including high-scoring and the difficulty of winning, how he deals with outlier results and some new restaurant projects in the works.  With Labor Day Weekend ahead, we also check in with Kevin Green of The Butcher Shoppe about the state of the meat business, what's been hot this summer and some under-the-radar cuts to add to your menu this fall. Chris Davis of Crossed Rifles BBQ from Schertz, Texas, knocked down the Grand Championship at last weekend's prestigious Red Raiders Challenge in Lubbock with a huge score of 713.16. We visit with the Marine Corps veteran on Episode 225 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast about his journey into competition BBQ, which he credits for helping him cope with PTSD from his time in the military. It's a common theme for veterans who come on the show and Chris discusses why he thinks open-fire cooking resonates with them.
