The Rev. Hans Fiene, pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crestwood, MO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Samuel 30. David and his men return to Ziklag after being rejected by the Philistines, only to find their city burned and their families taken captive by the Amalekites. David and his men weep bitterly. David then pursues the Amalekites with 400 of his men, leaving 200 behind who are too exhausted to fight. Along the way, he meets an Egyptian who leads him to the enemy camp. There, David attacks the Amalekites and recovers everything that was taken from him and his men. The Book of 1 Samuel beings with the unique birth of Samuel, the last judge of Israel. Soon, the people of Israel begin to press upon the aging prophet Samuel to anoint a king over them like the other nations. YHWH assures Samuel that the people are rejecting their God, not Samuel. He advises Samuel to give the people what they want. What follows is the rise and fall of King Saul, the eventual anointing and coronation of David as king, the forerunner of Jesus. It's a true story of political intrigue and warfare, but it's also more than that. 1 Samuel shows us God working to save his people from their enemies and even from themselves.

The Rev. Hans Fiene, pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crestwood, MO, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study 1 Timothy 5:1-6:2a. In the previous chapter, St. Paul urged Timothy to be a positive example of faithfulness and resolve, despite his young age. Now, the Apostle gives him examples of how to exercise his authority with patience and tact as he deals with men and women of different ages, widows, and other ruling elders (pastors). Exercising leadership for the benefit of each takes a different approach according to their stature and situation. The "Pastoral Epistles" of 1st and 2nd Timothy and Titus, written by the Apostle Paul and divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit, are a treasure trove of invaluable insights into the early Christian church and God's expectation for its leaders. These letters, brimming with wisdom, are not relics of the past but remain authoritative today. They offer a roadmap for navigating the challenges of leadership and teaching, making them not only essential for understanding the role of pastors but also for all Christians seeking to live a life that honors God's will.

Rev. Hans Fiene, pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crestwood, MO joins Rev. Finnern to study Genesis 32. Jacob wanted to calm the storm of past sins through goats, rams, camels, calves, and bulls. We fall into the same temptation that we can give a clear conscience and reconcile with others based on our actions. Even though Jacob had all the best laid out plans, He found himself with God face to face and a reconciled relationship with his brother separate from his merit, but a gift from the LORD. Our God is not one who stays away from His people, but comes near and blesses us. “Lord God, as we are surrounded by tribulation, come to us and bless us again. Come to us and help us to cling to You, as Jacob would not let You go. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Amen”

Rev. Hans Fiene, pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crestwood, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Ezekiel 42:1-20. Ezekiel's vision of the new temple continues into other rooms and chambers of the temple complex. Although the measurements given were never intended to be used to construct this temple, the fact that the LORD provides them shows the reality of the LORD's promise and the deliberateness of His intention to fulfill His Word. The clear distinction between the holy and the common in this temple is a reminder that the LORD's bare holiness is unapproachable by sinners. Yet in His mercy, God provides access to His holiness to benefit sinners through His Son, Jesus Christ. “The Faithful Watchman” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Ezekiel. Just when Ezekiel should have begun his service as priest in the temple in Jerusalem, the LORD called him to be a prophet in exile in Babylon. Through fantastic visions and attention-grabbing action prophecies, the prophet Ezekiel is a faithful watchman who proclaims the word of the LORD to bring people to repentance over their sins and to faith in the coming Savior, Jesus Christ, the glory of the LORD made flesh.

Rev. Hans Fiene, pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Crestwood, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Jeremiah 10:1-25. God mocks idolatry in order to show His people that the nations and their gods do not need to be feared. Idols are only human creations; they are as lifeless as scarecrows that can do absolutely nothing. In complete contrast, the LORD is the one true God and King over every nation and all creation. He alone is to be feared as the One who created and sustains all things by His power, wisdom, and understanding. Yet He is not simply a God “up there.” By His promise, the LORD is the portion of His people. Because Judah refuses to repent of her idolatry, however, the LORD will send them into exile in Babylon. As the people lament their destruction, so the LORD laments the necessity of bringing such calamity upon His people. Jeremiah prays that the Babylonian exile will have the desired effect of bringing the people to repentance and faith in the LORD. He is the One who ultimately bears our sin and affliction in the person and work of Jesus Christ, true God in our humanity. “A Time to Destroy and a Time to Build” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Jeremiah. The prophet calls the people of Judah and Jerusalem to repent of their faithless idolatry and warns them of the destruction that is coming in the Babylonian exile. Yet Jeremiah does not leave us without hope in the midst of such dark days. Jeremiah and all who believe the Word of God he preached survive because of hope that is found in the righteous Branch from the line of David, Jesus Christ.
In this recording, the Anglican (Miles Smith), the Lutheran (Korey Maas), and the Presbyterian (D. G. Hart), each a white Protestant man in case you did not notice, talk about pressures among confessional Protestants to open ordination beyond historic limits. It is another way of asking where the lines are between the tasks reserved for those ordained and what lay people (men or women) may legitimately do in "ministry." If every member is a minister, according to the logic of "every member ministry," does ordination mean anything? This conversation is adjacent to the one that Chortles Weakly and Wresbyterian had with Hans Fiene about women's ordination. We also mention Pastor Fiene's Twitter thread about horse bleep and bull bleep surrounding the hermeneutics of male ordination in the Pastoral Epistles. The subject of ministry turns out to be squishy and that lack of solidity is especially evident in Lutheran designations of parochial school teachers as "ministers," a designation that tried even the justices of the Supreme Court's sagacity.
Hans Fiene, Lutheran pastor and content creator par excellence, expands on a series of tweets on the theology and pyschology of doctrinal declension as typified by the ordination of female pastors. And we talked about the value of humor and satire in the service of the teaching and defense of doctrine. Here's the video we played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnjTPavXkjU
It's an Iron Ladle Challenge! In honor of the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther's defiant confession of faith at the Diet of Worms, Sarah, Erin, Bri, and Rachel are each cooking up a tasty recipe inspired by a single key ingredient: worms. Beginning with a brief history of Luther's legendary 1521 trial appearance at the city of Worms, the Ladies then launch into a four-course smorgasbord of wormy dishes, from Erin's savory udon noodles to Sarah's zoodle skillet, from Rachel's quadruple layer dirt cake with gummy worm surprise to Bri's sour gummy worm monstrosity. Lutheran history has never tasted so good (or, in Bri's case, so very, very bad). To learn more about the Diet of Worms, check out Dr. Jack Kilcrease's explanatory article on LutheranReformation.org or the Rev. Hans Fiene's animate comedy musical on the Lutheran Satire channel. Join Lutherans across the nation in celebrating “Here I Stand” Sunday on April 18, 2021, and support the ongoing confession of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod with a "Here I Stand" Thank Offering at lcms.org/givenow. Erin's Udon Soup Use these ingredients or others you'd enjoy together: Udon noodles Broth of choice Baby Bok Choy (Pour boiling water over bok choy in steamer. That's all the cooking it needs!) 6 1/2 minute egg Shitake mushroom Sarah's Ground Beef, Butternut, and Zoodles Un-recipe Brown butternut squash chunks (Sarah uses pre-packaged fresh chopped) in olive oil, salt, and pepper over medium heat. If cooking from frozen, leave the lid off the pan to allow the steam to escape. Prepare zoodles according to package directions, if using pre-packaged. Otherwise, spiralize your zucchini and cook until al dente. Add ground beef to butternut squash and brown. Spice to taste. Add Zoodles to butternut and beef, and mix well. Cover pan and turn heat off to let the flavors combine. Let simmer for a few minutes. Enjoy! Rachel's Dirt Pudding Piñata Cake Using 8 or 9 inch round cake pans lined with wax paper or parchment, bake a chocolate fudge cake and fudge brownies according to the instructions on the packages. (For brownies, shorten baking time to about twenty minutes and remove when toothpick comes out clean.) Set aside on wire racks to cool. Make dirt pudding dessert (leaving aside crushed Oreos for now) according to your favorite recipe. (Here's mine. If you use this one, be sure to cut it at least in half for the cake.) Cut circles about the size of a large cereal bowl from the centers of one cake round and one brownie round. (To see how a piñata cake of this sort would look like in a perfect world, check out this idiosyncratic YouTube tutorial.) Begin building your cake with an uncut brownie round spread with chocolate fudge frosting. Add the next two layers (cut cake round and cut brownie round), with frosting between and atop each layer. Pause to add the filling in the cavity of the cake. Put down a layer of crushed Oreo cookie, then a layer of dirt pudding, then a layer of gummy worms. Repeat until the filling is even with the top of the hole. Add the top (uncut) layer and frost the entire outside of the cake. Optional: dust with powdered sugar. If you have a talented teenage artist in the house, ask her to freehand draw you a Luther Rose in red frosting on the top of your cake. If you don't, you may decorate the cake in whatever way seems best. Enjoy! Bri's Sour Gummy Worm Rice Crispy Treats It's better if you don't try this one.
