Author Josh Winning joins us to talk about Jim Henson and Frank Oz's most challenging creation, The Dark Crystal. Josh's novel The Shadow Glass has been described as a love letter to Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal so we had a lot to talk about such as The Dark Crystal ‘s let-the-audience-figure-it-out approach to worldbuilding, the depth of that worldbuilding once you get a handle on it, the moments of humour in an otherwise pretty serious film, Jim Henson's reading habits, the groundbreaking puppeteering, as well as some general thoughts on the Muppets and why The Henson Company seems to have avoided anything on the scale of The Dark Crystal in recent decades. It was a fascinating conversation. Heather also talks about raising kids and all the ins and outs of raising a boy vs a girl. Lisa Beth graduated from the University of North Texas obtaining a bachelor's degree in English and Linguistics. After graduation, Lisa Beth worked as an editor and writer for many years until finding her true passions. Currently, Lisa Beth is a comedian, TV producer and a writer. She lives in LA full time while continuing her work as a producer and creating new comedy content for shows. Phoebe was originally raised in Minneapolis where she spent the first part of her life entrenched in theater. In 2006 she started performing improv at The Brave New Workshop, then studied with Second City founder Paul Sills, Upright Citizens Brigade and trained for the Henson Company's touring improv show Puppet Up! With Patrick Bristow. Then transitioning to primarily stand up in 2007, she produced notable shows in LA and New York, toured internationally and was featured in festivals such as Bridgetown, High Plains 10k Laughs the Jewish Humor Festival and Akumal Comedy Festival. Phoebe has also worked in film and television. This includes A Serious Man, the Adult Swim shows On Cinema and Decker, as well as MTV's Greatest Party Stories Ever. With my husband on the road, searching “How To” on the internet has transformed me into a “Mommy MacGyver”. “I don't know how you have the time.” “You're like a Supermom!” These are common things that people say, but the truth is that life hasn't always been easy or pretty. Even with the bumps, I always try to find the humor in everything because laughter is good for the soul and you should never take life too seriously….where's the fun in that?   https://chaosncookies.com/ https://www.instagram.com/heathersteinker (https://www.instagram.com/heathersteinker) https://www.facebook.com/heathersteinker (https://www.facebook.com/heathersteinker)...

Halle Stanford, President of Television for The Jim Henson Company (PRNewsfoto/The Jim Henson Company) Three years ago I was lucky enough to be invited onto the Jim Henson Studios lot in Hollywood to interview executive producer Halle Stanford. Little did I know then how much of an impact she would have on my life. We hit it off immediately because Halle's joy is contagious and she genuinely loves what she does, just like me! Peter Brooke, Creative Supervisor of the Jim Henson Creature Shop and Aughra.   She introduced me to several puppeteers who were working on "Splash and Bubbles" while I was there. It was so cool to see how Henson Co. incorporates new technology with the classic art form of puppeteering. A few months later she also connected me with the incredible creators of Indie Shakes - LA's Independent Shakespeare Festival. I had no idea such a thing existed in LA. Now I look forward to every summer because it means I can support them and go see their shows. And one of the coolest things Halle did was take me to the Jim Henson Creature Shop to see the puppets from Netflix's "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." For several hours I walked through each area where artists were molding, shaping, painting, and crafting each character from the show. I took dozens of pictures of the process which I recently shared on NBC LA along with a live look inside the Shop. I've been holding onto these pictures for 2 years and I am so excited to finally share them! Which leads me to now. I got to sit down with Halle again to talk about this brilliant show she's been working on for years, long before I got a sneak peek. She took time out of her busy show promotion schedule to sit down with me and talk about the powerful female characters in "Age of Resistance." We also talked about how Henson Company and Netflix worked together to maintain Jim Henson and Frank Oz' original vision while using modern technology. "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" is streaming now on Netflix and fans have been very vocal in their support of the show. Some are already calling for a season two. Listen to this episode to find out what Halle has to say about that possibility. And you can follow the Jim Henson Company on Facebook and Instagram to see what other projects they are working on next.

Lisa Henson is no stranger to creating shows kids love. But despite her father's huge name and company, she didn't start out in children's programming. She started making movies at Columbia and Warner Brothers and after decades of working in mainstream adult content, found herself back home at The Henson Company. Lisa is the CEO and President of The Henson Company and works alongside her brother Brian who is the Chairman. They produce new shows like Dot,Splash and Bubbles, Sid The Science Kid and a new show Fraggle Rock fans will love called Doozers. Remember those loveable green guys that were always working hard to build things, right as the Fraggles destroyed them. Well the Doozers are back and building up a storm. The new CG animated series for preschoolers incorporates  STEAM lessons - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics - while also having fun. The animated preschool series Doozers focuses on four Doozers kids, a team of best friends who live in Doozer Creek, a community that is a wonderful blending of the fantastical, modern, and eco-friendly. Henson tells me that one of their main goals with children's programming is to incorporate teaching moments whether its' STEAM lessons like in Doozers, or digital responsibility like their show Dot from author Randi Zuckerberg. In fact, The Henson Company has been creating a lot of things that kids love. There's been no shortage of ideas and Lisa has been executive producer of all of them. She shares with me that although they love their new shows, they also pay close attention to what she calls their "legacy" shows and how they create content around those. One of my favorite shows grown up was Fraggle Rock. And I was thrilled to find out there is a Fraggle Rock movie in the works! It will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Lisa also shares with me what it was like as a busy movie executive while balancing motherhood. She felt like because she waited later in life to have kids, she had established her career and could make more time for the kind of needs that come along with kids. And of course we also talked about her father's legacy, what kind of puppets she played with as a kid and where she sees The Henson Company going in the future. Lisa Henson with her father Jim Henson. Courtesy @The Jim Henson Company She also shared with me what show she has the most affinity for because it was her idea, and her father made it for her. What a legacy indeed. Watch for the new season of Dooers on May 25th on Hulu. Executive Produced by Lisa Henson Make sure you check out the Henson Family Hub to keep up with all their new shows and ways to interact with The Henson Company. And follow them on Instagram @hensonfamilyhub. And watch the new season of Doozers May 25th on Hulu!

There's a certain feeling that comes to mind when someone mentions the name, Jim Henson. For me it's comforting, nostalgic, and familiar. I'm guessing many of you have those same feelings. Nowadays The Jim Henson Company is creating a legacy that our kids will look back on with the same fondness. I sat down with Halle Stanford, the Executive Vice President of Children's Entertainment for The Jim Henson Company for some insights on how they plan to do that. As I was sitting in her office I couldn't help but notice how everything on the Henson lot created those same feelings I had about the shows. Halle told me that was also part of the Henson legacy and explained why the history on the studio lot is so important. She also shared how she rose to such a prominent position in children's television and how hands-on she is in the development of new shows. The Henson Company actually sold the rights to The Muppets and Sesame Street several years ago. With their 2 biggest properties gone, they found themselves in an exciting position: creating brand new shows that kids would love just as much as the classics. A tall order but from what I can tell, Halle was instrumental in making this happen. She leads the Company's development and production of all preschool and children’s programming for television, home entertainment and digital media in animated and live-action formats. A nine-time Emmy-nominated children’s television producer, she currently serves as an executive producer on the award-winning series Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train, which currently air daily on PBS KIDS® in the U.S. and in multiple markets around the world, as well as Doozers, a CG-animated preschool series inspired by the wildly popular characters from the classic Henson series Fraggle Rock which debuted as the first Hulu Original for kids in 2014 and currently airs on Sprout. She also talks about the new show she's developed called Dot, based on Randi Zuckerberg's popular book. It's currently also airing on Sprout. And as if that's not enough, she's currently in production on the groundbreaking marine biology series Splash and Bubbles for PBS KIDS® and the Netflix Original preschool show Julie’s Greenroom starring award-winning actress Julie Andrews. She is also developing an untitled children’s series based on children’s books from Al Yankovic. Stanford co-authored a book series, "Jim Henson’s Enchanted Sisters," a collection of fantastical comedy-adventure stories for girls published by Bloomsbury and currently in series development with Cyber Group Studios. I had to admit to her that with all these amazing shows to choose from, my favorite has always been Fraggle Rock. It's probably because the lead girl was named "Red" and that was my nickname growing up. Isn't it funny what kids relate to in shows? I think that's why it's so important to have a wide variety of characters, and stories to expose them to because you never know what they'll connect with. And if connecting with kids is the goal, I have no doubt Halle and The Jim Henson Company will continue this legacy well into the future.
