Legendary anthropologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy gave us the term “allomother,” and by extension, “alloparent”—the pioneering idea that mutual care is the reason we've evolved to be the humans we are today. Hrdy, who is professor emerita at the University of California, Davis, has just written a new (and stunning) book, called Father Time: A Natural History of Men and Babies. Today, we talk about what she's learned about human culture over the course of her long career, and the impact of her elegant hypothesis. See more about this episode and guest on my Substack. The idea of a "maternal instinct"—the notion that mothers are wired for nurturing and care—is a familiar one in our culture. And it has a flipside, a corollary—what you might call “paternal aloofness.” It's the idea that men just aren't meant to care for babies, that we have more, you know, manly things to do. But when you actually look at the biology of caretaking, the truth is more complicated and much more interesting. My guest today is Dr. Sarah Blaffer Hrdy. She is Professor Emerita of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis and the author of the new book, Father Time: A Natural History of Men and Babies. In it, she examines paternal care, the biology that supports it, and the norms and practices that sometimes suppress it. In this conversation, Sarah and I set her new book, Father Time, in the context of her four previous books. We discuss the surprising prevalence of male care in fish and amphibians. We talk about how Charles Darwin noted the plasticity of caretaking in animals, only to ignore that plasticity when talking about humans. We consider how time in intimate proximity with babies activates capacities for nurturing—not just in fathers, but in caretakers of all kinds. Along the way, we touch on langurs and owl monkeys; emus and cassowaries; cichlid fish and fairy shrimp; prolactin and oxytocin; patriarchy and patriarchal notions. We talk about what seems to be distinctive about the human capacity for care; and about what happens when males spend too much time competing for status, and not enough time snuggling babies. You'll probably get a sense for this from our conversation, but there are very few researchers who take both biology and culture as seriously as Sarah Blaffer Hrdy does. She does not shy away from digging deep into either domain. And she does not shy away from trying to trace the tangled links between the two. Alright friends, I hope you enjoy this one. On to my conversation with Dr. Sarah Blaffer Hrdy. A transcript of this episode will be available soon. Notes and links 3:00 – A classic paper on male parental care in fishes. 7:00 – Dr. Hrdy's previous books include The Langurs of Abu, The Woman that Never Evolved, Mother Nature, and Mothers and Others. 13:00 – A academic article on “cooperative breeding” in birds. 16:30 – The full text of Charles Darwin's book, The Descent of Man. 21:00 – Read about Caroline Kennard and her correspondence with Darwin here. 23:30 – A review of a recent book on Nancy Hopkins and her (quantitative) efforts to expose sexism at MIT. 26:00 – The 2014 paper on the brains of fathers in different caretaking roles. 37:00 – A paper by Larry Young and a colleague on the role of ancient peptides (like oxytocin) in sociality. 40:00 – The lab of Dr. Lauren O'Connell, who studies physiology and social behavior in poison dart frogs. 42:00 – A review of paternal care in primates. 47:00 – For more on Michael Tomasello's “mutualism hypothesis”—and a lot else—see our earlier episode with Dr. Tomasello. 49:00 – For more on the costliness of the human brain, see our earlier episodes here and here. 58:00 – The 2007 study by Esther Herrmann, Michael Tomasello, and colleagues on the human specialization for social cognition. 59:00 – A study of children's early “ostensive gestures” of showing and offering. 1:02:00 – An obituary for the ethnographer Lorna Marshall. 1:09:00 – An overview of ostracods and the traces they leave in the fossil record. In her new book, “Father Time: A Natural History of Men and Babies,” primatologist Sarah Blaffer Hrdy rebuffs the idea that men don't develop a dad instinct the way mothers do. For centuries, it was just assumed that men were not inclined to be good at caregiving and Hrdy says academic researchers overlooked studying what happens when men become fathers. Hrdy's own research found that fathers, like mothers, experience biological and neurological changes when they become parents. We'll talk about how the role of fathers is changing and why we should rethink the way society treats dads. Guests: Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, anthropologist and primatologist; author, "Father Time: A Natural History of Men and Babies"
Over half a century, Sarah Blaffer Hrdy has challenged many of our myths about parenting, attachment, and "human nature". In this conversation, we dive into her remarkable career, culminating in her new book, Father Time. [You can now order Father Time via Amazon or Princeton Uni Press] We discuss a variety of topics, from hunter-gatherer parenting to the limitations of comparing humans to chimpanzees. We also discuss "allomothers", attachment theory, and the tragedy of infanticide. We finish with a discussion on the remarkable social changes in fatherhood and the neuroscience that has enabled it. As always, we finish with Hrdy's reflections on humanity. Party Favorz decided to jumpstart your weekend with the annual Beach House Edition 2021 style! Because of an uptick in music selections, Beach House 2021 is one of the more diverse Disco House sets we've done in a while. Beach House 2021 has everything including NuDisco, Classic House, Jackin House, Soulful and even some Gospel and Reggae thrown in for good measure — with everything sitting on the funky tip. This is one ball of sunshine that should make kicking back around the pool even more carefree. There are some classic Disco samples sprinkled throughout as well as some updated originals. In most cases, the DJs don't use the original titles (for unknown reasons but I can surmise) a few of which will be reprised a bit later with the original titles for the fourth installment of Thank God It's Disco. In other news, we've finally finished the app that's been promised. For the moment, it appears on the homepage on mobile and table at the bottom of your screen. Click on it and agree to install and you've got a near full-blown working Party Favorz app on your device. It does have some limitations in that it does not send out notifications of new posts. Sorry, that's a capability that's beyond our expertise and too costly to pay someone to implement. The nice thing is that not only is it secure, it requires ZERO permissions because we value your privacy. You can also install it on your desktop or laptop through a link in Chrome at the top-right of the address bar next to the ☆ or 'bookmark' icon. It's easily uninstalled on mobile devices but apparently on desktop it can only be deleted. I'll need to research that because it's more than a shortcut, it truly is an app in it's own enviornment. Another benefit is that subscribers can take advantage of the new 'Playlist' feature which is the Podbean player that lists the last 300 episodes for continuous play and/or easy scrolling. The set list for the Summer Edition 2021 has already been compiled and will be ready to launch by the end of next week. Until then...ENJOY! Women from different species, including humans, who had better help and support have better chances of survival. What can we learn from mother nature? Sarah B. Hrdy professor emerita at the University of California Davis, and Associate in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology at Harvard talks about her books: Mothers And Others, The Woman That Never Evolved, and Mother Nature.Listen to Greg and Sarah as they discuss allomotherhood and alloparenting, foundational concepts that ensured humans will continue to survive and evolve. As humans, we often neglect the fact that there is so much to learn from mother nature, the animals, and relate them to our society. Tune in to the end and learn how shared care, concern for others, and the intense need to socialize and be cared for became key to human survival. Sarah talks about how these concepts relate and is evident in society and modern issues like daycare, women empowerment, birth control, and familial unit setup. Episode Quotes:On language and grammar pushing the human race forward:“Grammar is really a tool for helping someone else understand what you're saying. Much about humans is about helping others. Understand what we're thinking and feeling.”Why is great daycare important for modern parenting and empowering more women and families?“Even though I think an extended family is often in many ways going to be advantageous over most daycare in the United States. A good daycare is really a gift to mothers and children growing up, and to fathers. But for so long, our debate has been over well, are we going to have Mothercare or daycare? When in fact the debate should have been, how do we make daycare better?” Thoughts on modern housing and architecture:“There's an additional problem which is architecture and the way our housing is designed. Everybody wants to be in these independent houses. I noticed years ago when I was at UC Davis that the graduate students who were living in student housing but had young children were actually better off than the ones who were in their independent apartments.”On how to really empower young women:"We're not providing them with the sex education and birth control they need. To me, this is like sending someone up into an airplane without pressurizing the cabin. It's just wrong. And I'm disgusted that some of the institutions I'm most involved with they put women's career opportunities top of the radar. They really want women to have equal pay and so forth."Show Links:Sarah B. [Intro: 8:17 | Book Pre-sale: http://bit.ly/ORBITgr] In this episode, I speak with Darcia Narvaez PhD, Professor of Psychology at Notre Dame University. Professor Narvaez is the author and editor of numerous books, including ‘Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture and Wisdom’ and ‘Indigenous Sustainable Wisdom: First-Nation Know-How for Global Flourishing.’ She also writes regularly for Psychology Today with her ‘Moral Landscapes’ column, which explores her work with parenting, child development, self-development, and morality. The first time I spoke with Darcia was almost three years ago, back when I was first beginning to do interviews for this podcast. A great deal has changed and happened since then, not only with my work specifically, but in the world at large. In contemplating the roots of the fragmented, disruptive responses the novel coronavirus pandemic has generated, I felt compelled to reconnect with Prof. Narvaez to discuss her insights into this subject. This includes an examination of the contemporary, common child-rearing practices in the West (specifically the United States), and how this informs the ideologies/belief systems people attach themselves to in states of crisis and uncertainty, such as ours. After we explore this subject, I ask Darcia to define the characteristics of the Evolved Nest: “Every animal has a nest for its young that forms part of an extra-genetic inheritance corresponding to the needs and maturational pace of offspring (Gottlieb, 1991; Oyama, Griffiths & Gray, 2001). Humans evolved to have the most helpless newborns and the most intensive caregiving niche. Childrearing practices consistent with the human nest were practiced for over 99% of human genus existence and still are in some indigenous cultures. Intensive caregiving in early life includes nearly constant touch, extensive breastfeeding, and free play with multi-aged peers as well as positive social support for the mother-child dyad and multiple adult caregivers (Hewlett & Lamb, 2005; Hrdy, 2009). All these caregiving practices are correlated with physical and mental health outcomes, but also with social and moral development.” (https://bit.ly/3fTZHTF) Darcia Narvaez’s prior careers include professional musician, classroom music teacher, business owner, seminarian and middle school Spanish teacher. Her current research explores how early life experience influences societal culture, wellbeing and sociomoral character in children and adults. She integrates neurobiological, clinical, developmental and education sciences in her theories and research about human nature and human development. She publishes extensively on moral development, parenting and education. In this episode, Camilla Hrdy, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Akron School of Law, and Mark A. Lemley, William H. Neukom Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Director of the Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology, discuss their article "Abandoning Trade Secrets," which will be published in the Stanford Law Review. They begin by explaining what trade secrets are and what they protect. They describe the conventional association of trade secrets with patents and observe that analogizing to trademark could be more helpful. They argue that trade secret law should draw on the trademark abandonment doctrine, and explain how it would improve trade secret policy. Hrdy is on Twitter at @CamillaHrdy and Lemley is on Twitter at @marklemley. This episode was hosted by Brian L. Frye, Spears-Gilbert Associate Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law. Frye is on Twitter at @brianlfrye. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Dr. Wendy's sick (yeah, right). I'm not buying it. I think she just wanted to pull one of her favorite interviews of all time with her personal and professional hero, primatologist and anthropologist, Dr. Sarah Blaffer Hrdy. You've heard her name mentioned in many episodes where Dr. Wendy talks about allo parents (Survival of the Gayest and Mother's MILFs and Wives Parts 1 and 2, and others). Allo parents are all the people who help a child grow, stay safe and flourish. Lots of people are allo parents and don't even know it: grandmothers, aunts, uncles, teachers, neighbors, mommy's girlfriends, etc. These people are so important in human evolution, Dr. Hrdy and Dr. Walsh both think there should be an Allo Parents Day. The interview was broadcast on KFI AM640, an iHeart radio station in Los Angeles. The Dr. Wendy Walsh Show is every Sunday, 4:00-6:00 PM PST and on the iHeart Radio App.Call the Mating Matters Message Line: 323-207-8277.
“Do men need to cheat on their women?” a Playboy headline asked in the summer of 1978. Their not-so-surprising conclusion: Yes! Science says so! The idea that men are promiscuous by nature, while women are chaste and monogamous, is an old and tenacious one. As far back as Darwin, scientists were churning out theory and evidence that backed this up. In this episode, Annie and Elah go back to the 1970s and 1980s, when feminism and science come face to face, and it becomes clear that a lot of animals—humans and bluebirds included—are not playing by the rules. GUESTS Angela Saini, author of Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong Patricia Adair Gowaty, professor emeritus at UCLA, editor of Feminism and Evolutionary Biology. FOOTNOTES Sarah B. Hrdy is an anthropologist, feminist, and a major figure in this chapter of science history. In this book chapter she addresses the myth of the “coy female” and reviews the relevant scientific happenings of the 1970s and 80s, especially in the primatology sphere. Angus John Bateman’s 1948 paper about fruit fly mating and reproductive success, popularized by this paper from Robert Trivers in 1972. Bateman finds that males have more reproductive success the more females they mate with, and that females don’t benefit as much from mating with multiple males. Patty Adair Gowaty found holes in Bateman’s study. Bateman didn’t know exactly how many sexual partners his fruit flies had because he didn’t watch them. Instead, he counted up how many offspring they made. Unfortunately, a lot of them had harmful mutations and died—skewing his numbers. Not only do they not meet Mendelian expectations, but in Bateman’s data, he consistently counts more fathers than mothers—which can’t be right, since every baby fly has one mother and one father. Patty found that eastern bluebird females successfully raise offspring without help from their male partners. Patty and Alvan Karlin found that eastern bluebird babies aren’t always related to the parents raising them. True “genetic monogamy,” where bird couples only have sex with each other, appears to be the exception, not the rule in passerines. Polyandry—where females have sex with multiple males—has been found most of the species studied! In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, a psychology study at Florida State University found that most men, and no women would accept a sex invitation from a stranger. In this more recent Germany study, 97% of the women expressed interest in sex with at least one strange man, but only when researchers promised to arrange a (relatively) safe encounter. Btw, Patty tells us bluebirds don’t actually have sex in the nest, so having sex “outside the nest” is the norm. We were using the expression figuratively, but worth noting. The nest is really for storing the babies. CREDITS This episode was reported and produced by Elah Feder and Annie Minoff. Our senior editor is Christopher Intagliata. Fact checking by Robin Palmer. I Am Robot and Proud wrote our theme. All other music by Daniel Peterschmidt.

Downright With This House – Downright & Dirty Podcast by Dirty TrixFirst off I apologize for the delay with this cast. Also, you're going to hear defects and artifacts in the audio, Apple has decided to release an update to my OS that renders my audio production software useless. So I'm scrambling to figure out an effective alternative. While I wish I could just keep on jamming with my current setup, it appears that will not be the case. So please be patient for my next cast. Remember this is a one man show, I do everything alone. That means when it comes to equipment, software, and other costs, I need to foot the bill on top of everything else. In this episode, Camilla Hrdy, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Akron School of Law, discusses her article "The General Knowledge, Skill, and Experience Paradox," which will be published in the Boston College Law Review. Hrdy begins by explaining what a trade secret is and when trade secrets are protected and can be enforced. Then she discusses exceptions to trade secret protection, especially the "general knowledge, skill, and experience" exception. She explains how it differs from the "generally known" exclusion, and why it is important to understand those differences. And she reflects on how the exception can help us better understand the purpose and structure of trade secret law. Hrdy is on Twitter at @CamillaHrdy.This episode was hosted by Brian L.
