Interview with Viki Zarkin:  An Eleven Year Journey Surviving with Stage 4 Breast Cancer.  Viki recently published her incredible story in a book entitled,  I am the One. In addition to being an author, Vicki is a nationally known motivational speaker and coach. Her cancer journey is a testimony to the determination of the human spirit.  She stresses the importance of believing in yourself, challenging the status quo, finding your voice, and listening to your heart. In simple terms something I emphasize in all my podcasts and videos, to be one's own best advocate.At the time of her diagnosis of stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, Viki had 2 small children at home. She vowed to do all she could to survive to raise them herself despite her doctor's advice to simply go home and get her affairs in order.  She spent the next several years fighting for her life, advocating for herself and navigating through the healthcare system.  Viki states, “After eleven years, I am told I am the only one alive like me. I want more women to stand next to me shoulder to shoulder. They too deserve to tuck their children into bed at night. So, it is up to me to fight for them, and fight I will.”Viki shares her story to be a voice for women. Viki B. Zarkin is an Author and Motivational Speaker and Coach on a National level with over ten years' experience. Ms. Zarkin earned a B.S. in Communications and Broadcast Journalism from Ithaca College in 1987. Soon Viki began to work with Jere at the dental practice. She ran the front office so he could concentrate on the back. They worked together for almost 18 years before Viki got sick. In 1999, they had their first child Dell Isaac Zarkin, and a short 3 years later in 2002, they had their second child, a girl, Isabella Jolie Zarkin. The children, the dental practice, and family kept them very busy until Viki was diagnosed with cancer officially on January 5, 2011. Then their world turned upside down. Viki has been living with Stage 4 metastatic cancer for over 11 years. She was diagnosed in her 40's when her doctor first told her to go home and get her affairs in order. At the time, she had 2 small children at home. Viki spent the next several years fighting for her life, advocating for herself and navigating through the healthcare world and following her gut. Viki states, “After eleven years, I am told I am the only one alive like me. I want more women to stand next to me shoulder to shoulder. They too deserve to tuck their children into bed at night. So, it is up to me to fight for them, and fight I will.” Viki wants to share her story so she may be a voice for women and help in this fight. Viki's can-do attitude inspires people to think differently in their everyday lives and by applying her unique thought process, deals can be made in a boardroom just as easily as they can help someone through their cancer battle. Stage 4 cancer sucks but that's not all I am! I'm a mom, a daughter, a friend and I'm the luckiest girl around... I just happen to have cancer. Grabbing the collar of the oncologist after receiving the terminal diagnosis, “You didn't ask MY opinion. I jumped for joy to see listeners from Saudi Arabia, Kenya, New Zealand and Brazil!! Wow!! And, to run into people I’ve known through the years who tell me they’ve been tuning in, that they’re getting something from the content we’ve created and shared, that they’re trying new things with their lovers and partners and that their intimacy IS being ignited!    And, to the people who courageously reached out to disclose their Herpes status for the first time to ME. I honor and SALUTE you!! COUNTRY SINGER | SONGWRITER - Pete Kennedy is an award winning singer-songwriter from Ireland, now based in Nashville, Tennessee. He was recently on the hit show "Nashville" which airs on ABC. Since his debut in 2010, Pete has won International music awards, toured extensively across the US and Europe and built an established, dedicated fan base. His career gained momentum in 2010 with the release of his debut single "This Time." The song was brought to the attention of CMA Nashville's president Lee Williams. Mr. Williams was putting together a series of live shows in Nashville for the city's annual CMA Music Festival and invited Pete to be a part of his International Artist Showcase. The success of his Nashville debut and subsequent album release increased Pete's profile and acclaim. He gained International recognition when he was nominated for Album of the Year and Song of the Year at the BCMA Awards in 2012, winning the album category for "The Nashville Session Vol.1" at a ceremony in London later that year. We kick off another Inside Music Row with the mention of Alan Jackson - Alan is inviting fans into his home through a book called "Seasons of Sweetbriar."  The book features photos of when Alan and his family lived in the Sweetbriar estate - all proceeds will go to the Colon Cancer Alliance's Blue Note Fund to help fight cancer patients struggling to meet their financial obligations.  We also hear from Larry Black as he became an Ambassador of Good Will for the State of Tennessee in the middle of a taping of his successful "Larry's Country Diner."  Next, we mention the Grammy Nominees album - this is the 19th installment of the best-selling series, and a portion of the proceeds will help support the Grammy Foundation and the MusiCares Foundation.  The album is available late January.  Finally, we go Inside the Song with Irishman Pete Kennedy to hear about a very personal track he wrote called "I Am The One."
