Good morning, Five Minute Families. This weekend our church had a baby dedication for the new little ones in our church family. Please note that a baby dedication is not a baptism, so if you want more information about the difference, please let us know. But, as to something our pastor mentioned… “it takes a village to raise a child.”For the longest time, that African proverb really bothered me. I think because so many politicians with nefarious educational goals and parenting ideas were constantly using the phrase when my kids were younger. But, despite how others may MIS-use the saying, truly, biblically, we are to be in community. We are to one another the hard-to-discipline kids, and their parents, too. We are to one another the child who never speaks in Sunday school, and their parents, too. We are to one another the sports star kid and their parents as well as the kid with physical disabilities and their parents. We are to encourage, mentor, love, and support one another no matter what comes along. Through the season of parenting, we need biblical community. Quite often, we seek out biblical community that is from our same-age peer group. We have similar experiences, similar development and maturity, and more. I still have a friend that I met on my first night of a moms' group twenty-three years ago. Our main connecting factors at that time were that we are very close to the same age and both Christians, and, thus, that put most of our children at about the same ages. Most of us seek out same-age peer groups for ease of communication and connection, but as Titus 2 points out, the older generations are to teach the younger generations. As a young parent, speaking to other young parents, we are all just experimenting, not really yet knowing the results, but when an older parent takes the time to share what worked for her kiddos and what didn't IN THE LONG RUN, we can make better decisions for our children. Research is showing the importance of multi-generational community.Hebrews 10:23-25 points, “Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” We WILL have difficult seasons, even with neuro-typical children who have no physical, mental, or learning disabilities. Parenting each child will have moments of uncertainty and moments when we draw away from our biblical community. That's when the community needs to step up and step in and encourage the parents and help meet the needs of the kiddos in other ways.Remember what Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says, “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up. Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”Take, for example, Numbers 11 and the last part of verse 17. “They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.” In full context, this is about Moses contending with the people of Israel and their constant grumbling and complaining. Moses can only take so much, and that is true for parents sometimes. Certain seasons and certain children are very difficult. Without help, parents can reach their breaking point. Remember that you are NOT equipped for every single element of skill and every single need that your child will have. We are equipped as godly parents, and godly parents have to be willing to trust another in the faith to teach, counsel, and encourage their children. Romans 12:3-6 “For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone...

Steve recalls the lead-up to that race, including taking the World's Best in the Half Marathon at the Great North Run two weeks out, with Nic Bideau desperately getting the story to the papers back home and enduring the depletion diet. Steve shares the significance of the event at that time in history, and what it meant for the eventual winner of the women's race Uta Pippig to run through the Brandenburg Gate for the first time as well as the differences between what the race was back then in terms of the build-up and atmosphere compared to the spectacle it is now. Recounting the moments of crossing the finish line, Steve talks about what the victory meant to him, what he would have done differently and the aftermath of his career profile. Jimmy Akingbola can currently be seen taking on hosting duties in SORRY, I DIDN’T KNOW, a classic comedy panel show commissioned by ITV to mark Black History Month. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 have aired, all trending on Twitter, receiving a positive reception across the board and strong audience figures. First piloted in 2016 on ITV2, created and produced by Jimmy and his producing partner at TriForce Productions, Fraser Ayres, this new four part series tests and tease players’ and audience’s knowledge of untold stories and unsung heroes, embracing the gaping lack of knowledge we all have when it comes to black history. The final episode of Sorry, I Didn’t Know airs on Tuesday 27th October at 10.45pm on ITV. A respected and versatile actor, Jimmy just recently returned to his much-loved and ‘scene-stealer’ character of ‘Valentine’, exuberant younger brother to Idris Elba’s Walter in the third series of much-loved comedy IN THE LONG RUN, created by and also starring Elba for Sky One. Jimmy was praised by Metro, who stated that he ‘proves that African characters can be funny just because they are funny and not because they are ‘other’” whilst the BBC Entertainment stated that he is a ‘very welcome presence on screen’. Prior to that, he led the cast as an asylum-seeking African doctor who forms an unexpected and sparky friendship with the owner of a seaside café, Kate (Golden Globe Winner Brenda Blethyn) in KATE AND KOJI,ITV’S biggest sitcom success since Birds of a Feather and Benidorm with 5 million viewers for its first episode. He also took on a key role in EMMY nominated MOST DANGEROUS GAME for streaming platform Quibi in which he featured alongside Liam Hemsworth and Christopher Waltz; the series was nominated at this year’s EMMYs in the category of ‘Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series’ . He was also seen in TED LASSO for Apple TV+, a new comedy series starring Jason Sudekis as the popular, idealistic and clueless American football Coach Ted Lasso who Sudekis played in NBC Sports videos previously. His previous television includes BAFTA Award-Winning Comedy REV. (BBC2) which also starred Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander, ARROW (CW) in which he played the archvillain Baron Reiter, CHEAT (ITV). Jimmy also has prolific onstage experience. Variety praised his performance in OTHELLO at the Hammersmith Lyric Theatre on saying “Pumped up and sporting a scary mohawk, Akingbola is equally physically effective in the title role, and is a convincing Shakespearian actor”. The Guardian lauded his performance in BLUE/ORANGE at The Crucible Theatre, which was directed by Kathy Burke, in saying“Jimmy Akingbola turns in an exquisitely unpredictable performance as the pawn in the power struggle”. Jimmy was also seen in THE ISLAND at The Young Vic, which was praised in Metro as “meticulous and performed with taut, sweaty intensity by Jimmy Akingbola”. Additionally, alongside TriForce Productions, he is widely regarded as the founder of the TriForce Creative Network, which has multiple initiatives such as TriForce Short Film Festival, WriterSlam UK, and MonologueSlam UK that help to provide opportunities to discover diverse talent including actors, writers, directors and producers. Some of these initiatives have been supported by Spotlight, Equity, Channel 4. C21 Media, ITV, Sky and BBC. Kellie Shirley knows about the highs and lows of being an actor in Britain. She chats to Emma Lister about resisting early pressure to shed her accent, her big break in a film that no one saw and how she "went back to square one" before landing a dream job. Fame came knocking in the 00's with a reoccurring role on Britain's beloved soap, Eastenders (BBC), but with it came the paparazzi and sometimes being pigeon holed as a 'soap actor'. Now she's starring in Idris Elba's warm hearted show In the Long Run ( Sky, Starz) and was selected to take part in the prestigious BAFTA Elevate program.Kellie was nominated for MOVERS SHAKERS MAKERS by fellow BAFTA Elevate member, Rhoda Ofori-Attah in episode S1.6.Kellie's website:www.kellieshirley.co.uk The last three questions....PIECE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGPantomime performance with her dad PIECE THAT DIDN’T LOVE BUT HAS VALUETiger King on NetflixNOMINATE AN ARTIST FOR US TO CHECK OUT: Fraser Ayres, writer, actor, producer, CEO of Triforce Creative Network This season of MOVERS SHAKERS MAKERS has been made possible by grants from the Norfolk Arts Project Fund and using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Delighted and excited to kick off a new series of the show with the much loved actor, Jimmy Akingbola. Years ago I was lucky enough to see Jimmy on stage at the Crucible Theatre, in Blue/Orange, and since then his career has gone from strength to strength. Whilst continuing to work prolifically on stage, including a memorable performance as Othello at the Hammersmith Lyric, Jimmy has developed a reputation as a scene-stealing comedy actor on TV; you might know him as crack-fiend Mick, from the BBC 1's Rev, or Valentine the exuberant DJ in in Sky One's In The Long Run, created by and starring Idris Elba. More recently, Jimmy has taken on hosting duties in the comedy panel show Sorry I Didn't Know, which has been commisioned by ITV to mark Black History Month this October. In his Mixtape Assembly, Jimmy reflects on the music, lyricism, and poetry that has inspired him to become the renowned actor he is today. He talks about listening to the Wu-Tang Clan in his dressing room to get him hyped up to perform Chekov, ponders what Shakespeare would have made of Grime music's clashing culture, and reveals the time he had to hide from a sword-wielding angry mob who stormed the Birmingham Rep in 2004, whilst Jimmy was performing in the controversial play Behsti, or Dishonour, by British Sikh playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti... Madeline Appiah is a British Born Ghanaian actress who has has an extensive career on stage and screen. Her most recent stage role saw her playing mother of iconic super-rock star Tina Turner in the West End show 'Tina: The Musical'. Yet even more monumental is Madeline's reoccurring role in Idris Elba's series In The Long Run, which has returned to our screens for a 3rd season. Loosely based on Elba's childhood, Madeline plays wife 'Agnes' to Elba's 'Walter'. Set in the 80s the series explores what London was like for a West African family. We spoke to Madeline about the series returning for a 3rd season, the importance of representation on and behind the screen and her short film 'Elephant'. It’s not the biggest week for new releases but the Backstage crew rise to the challenge with this new episode that includes Idris Elba interview clips, an explanation of what’s going on with cinemas at the moment, and a discussion about sharks. Yes, really.Cursed is Netflix’s new re-telling of the sword in the stone legend, and while Stevie has a lot of love for its star Katherine Langford, the show itself isn’t getting such favourable reviews.Idris Elba’s semi-autobiographical comedy In The Long Run is back on Sky One and while Katie and Claire insist it’s a sweet, gentle rom-com, it’s the only show that Stevie has ever seemingly ditched after the first episode. Find out what Idris and his co-star Bill Bailey have to say about The Wire actor taking on the comedic role, plus there’s a little treat for fans of Luther.A celebration of all things shark is happening on National Geographic and the team ponder whether the over-the-top narration is strictly necessary and why sharks are seen as such villains on TV and in films. There’s rumblings from the United States that summer blockbuster Tenet will be pushed back again – find out why what’s going on in the U.S and China is very bad for the cinema industry here. Finally, there’s a little teaser for Palm Springs – a film so new it doesn’t have a UK release date yet, and Peacock – the new streaming service from NBC Universal that’s launched in America with a series that’s got Stevie all hot and bothered. Please do subscribe if you like what you hear and do get in touch using backstage@sky.uk – we love emails!

YOUR BODY IS ON YOUR SIDE WITH ALIYAH WASHINGTON. If you've been listening since early on this year, you'll have heard Aliyah on episode 2, sharing her journey through anorexia and today we go much, much deeper. I actually split this episode into two parts as it got long but I didn't want to cut any of it. As I've merged topics like eating disorder recovery with potentially extreme lifestyles and practices like colon cleansing and juicing, I've worried that folks could take things to an extreme and I've tried to be very careful about how I've approached these subjects. One of the biggest things we talked about in this conversation was how disordered eating often begins in a simple desire to just FEEL BETTER when we're in so much pain and discomfort. And because we're in so much pain and discomfort, many of us tend to reach for the most extreme version of the most extreme thing whether it's long fasts or technically perfect diets but without context or transition or embodiment. And I see this happening in the world of exploring spirituality where there are so many trying to "crush our egos" or "overcome our shadows" or we're jumping into long meditation retreats or taking ayahuasca over and over again - and again, I think that some of this stuff is a natural reaction to wanting to be out of the pain that we're in. But truly, it's gentle steps - and becoming curious about and understanding of our ego or our shadow or our painful habits - that will really begin to shift our experience sustainably and allow us to grow rather than chasing our tails and constantly starting over. When I approached the idea of this interview I wanted to call it something like "how to be spiritual or how to cleanse without being crazy" - and I ultimately decided that as catchy as it was it was a little harsh - and I ended up calling it "your body is on your side" because Aliyah and I created a program with that same name. We created it with the idea that freedom is so much more than just being free to eat whatever you want or being a certain size or being comfortable at whatever that size is. We introduce the idea that your body is actually your best guide in navigating this human life and that there is so much beyond the surface of food and weight pain. This is a course you can take anytime at your own pace and I'll leave the link below as well as links to Aliyah's other offerings! You'll hear us talk about... ...Holistically addressing mental, phyical, and spiritual health IN THE LONG RUN. ...Aliyah's history with anorexia that began with being a very sick child and wanting to feel better. ...How you think you should feel on any particular diet or healing regimen vs. what you're seeing in reality. ...How we can begin making everything in our world right including our emotions, our symptoms, and any way our body reacts. ...What's going on when we feel we're eating perfectly and not getting better or losing weight. And so much more, I hope you enjoy part 1 of this conversation with Aliyah Washington. Links: Perception Trainers Website. Perception Trainers YouTube Channel. Aliyah Mystery School. Today I’m joined by Randy Paquette of First Choice Radon to discuss what you can do to prevent radon from seeping into your home. Selling a home? Get a free home value report Buying a home? Search all homes for sale As a gas, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. among non-smokers. It also kills more people annually than breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer combined. The good news is, radon is easy to test for, and you can do it with several different monitors. Randy suggests that you test for radon annually, even if you have a radon system already installed in your house. If you don’t have access to professional radon testing, you can use a home kit. Home kits take about 48 hours. After the test is done, you send the kit to a lab, which then sends you back your results. If your numbers come back a little high, you should have a professional then test your home so you know exactly what the levels are. Once you know what the levels are, the next step is to mitigate them. If you have a basement or a slab home, they create a vacuum under your home using a sub-slab system (or “fan system” as some call it), which sucks the radon out before it can get inside. “IN THE LONG RUN, THE COST OF PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY FROM RADON IS WORTH THE INVESTMENT.” If you have a crawl space home, this process takes a little more work, so the cost is a little different. Basement and slab-home mitigations cost about $1,300, but the system itself should last anywhere between 10 to 30 years, so the annual cost is negligible. It only costs about $2 per month to operate the system, which is also a negligible amount. A single test costs roughly $150. North Carolina is what’s referred to as a “red state,” meaning homes here typically have higher levels of radon in them, so $150 is a sensible investment to protect your family from something as potentially dangerous as radon is. If you have any more questions about radon or radon testing or you have any other real estate needs I can assist you with, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d love to help you.
This week Andrew’s old boss DAVID HEPWORTH of Word, Q and Live Aid fame comes in to discuss his book ‘Uncommon People: The Rise And Fall Of The Rock Stars’, out now in paperback. Are rock stars really finished, and did Dave fiddle the scores so he didn’t have to write about Liam Gallagher? Plus fellow guest ANNA FIELDING of Stylist magazine piles in to look at IDRIS ELBA’S new comedy ‘In The Long Run’, dissect the latest LP by fun-with-depression rock hermits EELS, and confess to the album that only she likes. Clue: ratty dreads. It’s all in the pop culture podcast for discerning dilettantes, co-presented by Siân Pattenden and Andrew Harrison. Audio production by Sophie Black. Jim Axelrod may be best known for anchoring the CBS Evening News on Saturdays, or he may be best known as the long-time, first-rate reporter for CBS News. But I'm interviewing him here because he is the author of my favorite book of the past ten years, In The Long Run, the autobiographical story of his life and his relationship with his father, as told through the prism of running and training for a marathon, and growing up in a fairly standard family life in America. Jim's account of his life, and the way he articulates his life experiences, both on the campaign trail with Hillary and Obama, and in his relationships with his family, are nothing short of stunning. A deep look at a most interesting life. I loved partaking in this interview, or really, conversation with Jim.
