Ep. 28 Mara Smith, the founder of Inspiro Tequila, shares her journey from being a lawyer, to being a stay-at-home mom for 16 years and then starting her own tequila brand. She discusses the challenges of entering a highly regulated industry and the importance of staying true to her vision. Mara also highlights the lack of representation of women in the tequila industry and how she is working to change that by creating a brand that appeals to female consumers. The episode explores the process of tequila production, the significance of being a B Corp, and the Purple Bicycle Project, which supports female founders. Key Takeaways: Inspiro Tequila stands out in the spirits industry for its emphasis on additive-free products and its targeting of female consumers. The brand's unique selling proposition includes being distilled, owned, and led by women, amplifying female voices inside and outside the industry. We are excited to welcome Mara Smith, a former attorney, corporate strategist and stay-at-home mom who is the founder of Inspiro Tequila. Mara began her legal career at a large law firm in Chicago before joining the corporate strategy team at a Fortune 100 Company. “Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” -Aristotle More (Inspiro) tequila, please! Yes, we are jumping back into the tequila pool with an awesome, woman owned and operated, emerging brand, Inspiro Tequila. I am so excited for this conversation because Founder, Mara Smith, is beyond intentional with the product and the brand. This is a product for women, by women and is actually clean (completely additive free)! Mara shares her journey thus far in the overly crowded beverage industry, her inspiration behind the name, and the overall mission. She couldn't find a tequila that met her standards- so she created one. Mara might be newer to the tequila family, but she is making big waves the right way and raising the bar for intentional- mission driven companies (us conscious consumers SO appreciate that:). If you are looking to take a leap in life because you recolonize the opportunity to do something better or your way- this convo is for you. Chase the dream and/or build it! Highlights: Representation. Innovation, salvation. Tequila, the beverage industry and taking on a big challenge. Questioning a better way. Chasing the dream and learning the ropes by LOTS of research. Building a team and earning your way up the ladder. Good, quality, mission driven tequila. This week's episode of the Opportunity Knocks podcast calls for a shot of tequila! My guest this week is Mara Smith, the Founder of Inspiro Tequila - an ultra-premium tequila brand created, run, and made by women, for women (but really everyone will enjoy it
Mara Smith's professional days came to a halt when she was put on emergency bedrest while pregnant with twins. They were born prematurely and she needed to be there for them. While at home raising her three children, Mara always dreamed of starting her own company. She also knew that with hard work and the right research---she could innovate any industry she put her mind to. Meanwhile, Mara started drinking tequila when she was looking for a gluten-free drink to fit into her healthy lifestyle. But she couldn't find one free of additives, so she decided to create one. To get her business started, Mara put in the necessary time and effort to self-educate herself about the spirits industry. As a #femalefounder, Mara has been focused on bringing the female perspective to the spirits industry. With a team of powerful women all over the world, Mara has been able to bring her vision to life. UPDATE FROM OUR TAPING: Mara now has a distributor in Illinois and Inspiro can be found in stores in Illinois! Tune into this week's episode of Dear FoundHer… to learn more about the power of research, the importance of leaning on others for help, and why all women need to know it's okay to re-enter the workforce no matter what stage of life you are in. Quotes • “There are a lot of resources that are available to get you up to speed pretty quickly and you just really have to take advantage of them. You can't get around putting in the time and effort.” (12:57-13:11) • “I discovered there are amazing communities of impressive powerful women who want to collaborate and offer guidance.” (14:31-14:41) • “No matter where people are in their stage of a new business, there's something you're going to learn. I find every conversation useful.” (20:46-20:54) • “I want to relay that message and inspire other women that it is not too late if you want to change. Maybe I want to start something new. You need to know that you're still capable and can learn everything you need to know.” (40:34-40:52) • “You have to have a community and you have to have support. It's lonely being a solo entrepreneur, and it is important to have people that you can talk to and bounce ideas off of.” (42:53-43:08) Connect with Mara Smith: Instagram Inspiro Tequila | http://www.instagram.com/inspirotequila Instagram Mara | http://www.instagram.com/beinspiredbymara Website | https://inspirotequila.com/ Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! This week's guest took her talents from the courtroom to the tequila lounge. After starting her career as an Attorney and Consultant, she found herself on bedrest while pregnant with her twins, which led to her stepping away from the corporate world. While taking the next 18 years to raise her children while focusing on her charitable work, she always had an entrepreneurial itch, which led to her finding Inspiro Tequila. The founder of a World-Class, Women-Owned, Gluten-Free Tequila Company, Mara Smith is this week's guest on “The Jake Dunlap Show.”Mara grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. During her undergrad years, she spent her time both as a telemarketer, as well as a waitress. After graduating with an Accounting Degree from the University of Illinois, she went on to earn her Doctor of Law at Northwestern University. After a number of years serving as an Attorney and later a Corporate Strategist for McDonald's Corporation, Mara was put on emergency bedrest while pregnant with her twins. When they were born prematurely, she decided to leave the corporate world to focus on family and charitable work. While she was caring for her children, she never stopped thinking about what was next, and always envisioned running her own company. Mara started drinking tequila when she was looking for a clean, gluten free spirit to fit her active lifestyle. After extensive searching for an additive-free tequila, it became her goal to create a “One-of-a-kind” tequila while bringing female voices into the spirit industry. All of this led to her founding Inspiro Tequila. Former attorney Mara Smith had no alcohol industry experience when she started wondering if the clean spirit she and her girlfriends enjoyed - tequila - could be reimagined from a female perspective. She committed herself to a singular mission – to create a new tequila brand that honored the traditional spirit while innovating to reveal a fresh, new offering. As a result, Inspiro Tequila was born with women as a part of every aspect of the brand, from production in Mexico to getting bottles on the shelves. Key takeaways this week: Mara explains her journey from corporate America to becoming an Entreprenista How the pandemic allowed Mara to have the time to focus on building her 100% agave tequila company The importance of research and understanding the basics of an industry before breaking into it The key to figuring out a proper budget to fund your own business as a solo Entreprenista Inspiro Tequila's early digital marketing tactics and launch strategy And finally, the importance of building a network around your brand Connect with Mara on LinkedIn: Mara Smith Follow Mara on Instagram: @beinspiredbymara Follow Inspiro Tequila on Instagram: @inspirotequila
