Uachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins this presented this year's Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad at a ceremony at Áras an Uachtaráin. The MC for the event was Doireann Ní Bhriain. This year's ten recipients are: Séamus Coleman, Republic of Ireland international football captain Patrick Leahy, Former United States Senator Aduke Gomez, Irish-Nigerian scholar Rosalind Scanlon, Artistic Director of Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith, London Professor Enrico Terrinoni, translator of Irish literature into Italian Orla Kiely, fashion designer Sr Teresa McKeon, missionary and educator in Sierra Leone (in absentia) Mary O'Neill, legal advocate in Los Angeles Pam O'Mahony, Irish community supporter in Australia Stella O'Leary, Observer to the International Fund for Ireland The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards for the Irish Abroad recognise the service given to this country or to Irish communities abroad by those who live outside Ireland. The Awards were established by the Government following the 2011 Global Irish Economic Forum as a means to recognise the contribution of members of the Irish diaspora and were first awarded in 2012. To date, 120 people have been conferred with the award. Speaking at the ceremony, President Higgins said: “The Presidential Distinguished Service Awards enable us, as a nation, to recognise those members of our global family who have contributed, in their different ways, so significantly to Ireland's reputation on the international stage as a country that understands the migratory experience, its challenges, responsibilities and the part that transience plays in all of our shared lives. This evening's awardees follow in the footsteps of all those others, heralded or unheralded, feted or forgotten, whose quiet determination to make a contribution beyond the self makes us all proud of them and whom we also remember here today. That spirit of generosity, and those qualities of an inward being and an inclusive outward gaze which so exemplify the best of our Irishness, have been practically and magnificently demonstrated by our honoured guests through their lives, their work, and their contribution of distinguished service to Ireland and to Irish communities abroad. Mar Uachtarán na hÉireann, may I thank you deeply for representing Ireland so well, and for your personal efforts, service, sacrifices, and contribution to the achievement of excellence in your various fields. Mo bhuíochas libh uilig.”

Week 4 in my Irish Abroad series and my guest this week is Sinead Naughton from New Inn, Co. Galway who has lived in New York for the past 30 years. Sinead is a retired History teacher who now operates bars restaurants in NYC and NJ with her husband Scott.  Sinead is involved with various networks in NYC and is a long time volunteer with Concern Worldwide.   This was a wonderful chat and a chance to reconnect, as myself and Sinead had been school mates from 1983 to 1988 in the Mercy Convent in Tuam, Co. Galway, this is the first time we have spoken since then! We shared memories of our time in secondary school and the teachers that had an impact on us growing up and in later years as adults. Sinead shared how her family in Ireland are such a big part of her life and the memories of her late Father still flow through her words today. Sinead shared how the pandemic changed so much in the hospitality industry and how businesses have had to adapt since then. We also spoke about creating opportunities for ourselves and sometimes that is by putting ourselves out there, even when we feel like we are out of our comfort zones. Sinéad and Scott enjoy traveling, exploring the outdoors, and having fun with their lovely English bulldog. Sinéad gets back to Ireland pretty often and treasures spending time with her family and young nieces and nephews. Once there, David shared how they went from having all their belongings stolen to a near fatal car accident, PTSD and severe online abuse followed but they never gave up. I told David that their story would make for a great movie! Now David works as a mortgage broker and his intention is to help fellow Irish in Canada with educating and guiding them in mortgages and home ownership in Canada. This podcast brings you insightful conversation between Aidan Donnelly and entrepreneurs and business owners/management with their own unique story to tell. If you like what you hear, please like, share and subscribe. About Jacqueline O'Donovan Jacqueline O'Donovan is unique being the CEO of UK based O'Donovan Waste, the only female in such a role in London and one of only three in the entire UK. The business was started by her father, Joe, and it grew to a phenomenal size before his untimely death at the age of 51. For her part Jacqueline left school at 16 and intended to become a child minder, before she was thrust into the role as MD of O'Donovan Waste at the age of 19 – with no formal training, this was a big step up.  O'Donovan Waste now offers a wide range of services including skip hire, roll on/off bins, waste transfer stations, tipper and grab lorry services, recycled aggregates, road sweepers, wheelie bins and demolition services. It's renowned for its efforts to clean up the industry and bring it into the 21st century. The company now has 150 staff, 85 vehicles, and six different depots, and she's won just about every recognition and award in the industry. Although in recent years the business was sold to Sortera, a Swedish firm seeking to become one of Europe's leading recyclers of construction waste, she remains at the coalface, running the company. Jacqueline also does a lot of work supporting the Irish community in London, and besides being an OBE, she was also given the Freedom of the city of London, the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad from President Higgins, and a host of other accolades.

In April 2021, for the first time since 1851, the population in the Republic of Ireland was estimated to have passed the five million mark. Many believe a big part of this story has to do with returning Irish nationals. This weekend I became one of them. According to CSO findings, 65,200 people immigrated to Ireland in the year to April 2021, 30,200 of whom were returning Irish nationals, the highest number of returning Irish nationals since 2007. 2022 is set to be an even bigger year for the return of the Irishmen and women abroad. James Parnell has made helping these people re-integrate into Ireland a huge part of his successful coaching business. His site ANewDawninIreland.com  is a resource for both returning emigrants and those coming to Ireland for the first time. A New Dawn in Ireland was the first blended online and offline training/coaching programme to inspire and help people create the life they want back in Ireland. Today on the podcast, with my car packed up and ready to head for the ferry, I took a moment to talk James about what he has learned through his years of meeting the returning Irish. It's fascinating stuff whether you're on the road home, thinking about it or at home wondering how tricky it might be for a member of your family to get back. James is a natural communicator with an abundance of empathetic, positive and creative energy. It's easy to see why his business The Wellbeing Gym and the MAP model he created for personal wellbeing and peak performance have been so successful. The Wellbeing Gym provides online, offline and blended life design, self-leadership, performance and productivity training programmes to individuals and businesses. You are with the indigenous group. They are all still in their loincloths. They speak different languages. I went through about eight different ethnic groups. They all spoke different languages. I couldn't understand what they said. They couldn't understand what I said, but we got along well.”Martin Von Hildebrand has dedicated the last five decades strengthening indigenous communities in the Colombian Amazon. During this time he obtained the recognition of their rights in the National Constitution, including the collective ownership of their land and the development of their governments. “I went to the Amazon and I got a canoe and I started rowing into the forest. It was absolutely like going back into the 17th century! I went around for six months on my own and that was fantastic because in this part of the Colombian rainforest there were absolutely no roads, no towns, no electricity, no flowing water. First off, we are joined by the owner of South America’s first Irish Chipper. Susan Kennedy who originally hails from Sandymount in Dublin, spoke to Harry and Aoife about the struggles of setting up a business in Argentina, as well as the area's growing seafood appetite.
