Because we like to keep things fresh around here, let's flip the usual approach and start with the roundup so we can close with the centerpiece of this episode:As our hosts are both dumpling aficionados, they were happy to talk about the places doing them right around the city. They also check in on Kinship Café, which got some well-deserved attention thanks to a recent visit from comedian (and volunteer) Jim Gaffigan.Over on the East Side, Crossroads Collective will close so “a local restaurant” (possibly Shanghai) can expand into the space. All caught up? Great. We've got special guests to introduce.Chris Corkery established Hundred Acre during what can be generously called tumultuous times. It was 2020, and just about everyone had suddenly gotten to know the term “supply chain” and how disrupting it can change pretty much everyone's lives. One of the areas most affected in those circumstances is the food system, especially when it comes to underserved areas in cities like outs. Corkery decided to address the situation by establishing Hundred Acre — an urban farm “providing a rapid response solution to food insecurity in the heart of Milwaukee.”It's an ambitious project that's still going strong five years later, and yet somehow we've never had Corkery on the podcast to talk about it. So we made up for lost time by covering the farm's origin story, why he chose Milwaukee over other cities, “pesto with purpose” and growing even more in the years ahead.

Joe Corkery, MD, CEO and Co-Founder of Jaide Health, joins SlatorPod to discuss how Jaide Health is driving medical interpreting and translation with AI, bridging communication gaps for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients and improving healthcare accessibility. With a background in computer science, medicine, and AI product leadership at Google, Joe co-founded Jaide Health with Julie Wilner, RN, in 2023 to address a long-standing need for real-time, interactive communication for the LEP patient population.Unlike older machine translation models, which worked sentence by sentence without context, Joe shares how generative AI can maintain coherence, track gender references, and infer meaning from prior context — crucial in medical settings. The CEO remains pragmatic about Trump's executive order designating English as the US's official language and revoking previous language access mandates. He argues that such policies will not change the healthcare industry's commitment to multilingual patient care but may push hospitals to seek more cost-effective solutions — potentially accelerating AI adoption.Looking ahead, Jaide Health is focusing on expanding into document translation, particularly for discharge instructions and patient portal messaging, areas where current solutions are slow or impractical.

Understanding that change is necessary to achieve different and better outcomes. Join us as we delve into these topics with Sonya Corkery, who shares her expertise on cleaning up businesses, enhancing communication, and setting yourself up for future success. ----- About our guest, Sonya Corkery: Sonya had an extensive corporate career in finance. That includes time as a financial planner, bank manager and commercial lender. She and her husband owned and operated a successful multimillion-dollar electrical contracting business for 16 years. Learn more about Sonya and how she might help your business at https://clearplanconsulting.com.au/ ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Sonya Corkery: Teaser Post: Key Insights from Our Conversation with Sonya Corkery Get ready to transform your business with actionable insights! In this episode of Your Intended Message, we sat down with Sonya Corkery, a seasoned consultant helping businesses clean up their operations, streamline processes, and achieve sustainable growth. Here's a sneak peek into the conversation: Q: What does it mean to "clean up a business"? Sonya: We joke about being the “janitors of the business world” because we come in, tie up loose ends, and establish systems and processes. Many businesses lack a framework and operate in constant crisis mode. We help assess these gaps, implement solutions, and make life easier for business owners. Q: What's the most common issue you see in businesses? Sonya: The biggest problem is a lack of systems and processes. Owners often start with a great idea but don't have the tools to turn it into an efficient operation. Clear systems streamline workflows, ensure consistency, and make training new team members much easier. Q: Why is communication such a critical part of business success? Sonya: Communication is at the heart of everything. Without clear communication, you're not giving your team or clients the best chance at success. Documenting processes and ensuring consistent messaging is vital for maintaining quality and alignment within a business. Q: How do you handle resistance from business owners who don't want to change? Sonya: It's tough for anyone to hear they've made mistakes. I always say, “You're not alone in this; many people face the same challenges.” We approach the situation objectively, showing how small changes can lead to better outcomes. Sometimes they need time to process feedback, and that's okay—it's all part of the journey. Q: What advice do you have for getting into the right mindset? Sonya: I always say, “Do your future self a favor.” Prepare today for what you'll need tomorrow. Whether it's making notes for a meeting or setting up a process, these small actions compound over time. Even something as simple as wearing the right “uniform” for a task can help set your mindset for success. Q: What's the key to working effectively in a family business? Sonya: Communication is even more critical in family-run businesses. Early on, my husband and I had to learn to separate our egos from what was best for the business. Clear boundaries, open dialogue, and mutual respect are essential for balancing personal and professional dynamics. Q: How can businesses use feedback to improve? Sonya: Feedback, even when it's uncomfortable, is a gift. I tell business owners to sit with it and reflect. Change is hard, but continuing with the same approach will give you the same results. By addressing feedback, you open the door to growth. Why listen to this episode? Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting, Sonya's insights on systems, communication, and mindset will inspire you to tackle your business challenges head-on. Don't miss her advice on preparing for success and creating genuine connections in your business. ----- ----more---- Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in communication skills. Symbolism and Story – with Benedict Corkery

The Adventures of Self Podcast

DESCRIPTION This week's adventure is taken in the company of Benedict Corkery, a podcaster whose life and circumstances are so familiar to Taylor it’s like having a conversation with a younger version of himself. Along with his brother and a friend, he is the founder of the Protagonist Podcast which explores how to become the hero in your own story. Ben is passionate about alternative education and in this conversation he and Taylor talk about ‘life as metaphor’, ‘the root of symbolism’ and how our lives continue to unfold even with these conversations. He’s a founding member of The Society for a Wandering Mind noting the words of Tolkein, who said: “Not all those who wander are lost”. KEY TAKEAWAYS We’ve not totally lost symbolism in today’s stories, but I think it’s something that’s more easily identifiable in older stories. I think we need to look back sometimes as it can be helpful and meaningful for us. There was a point where I was pretty down and anxious in my early 20s and wasn’t getting a whole lot done, getting out much or even thinking clearly to make plans. But, deciding to go for a walk in the morning when you wake up is a very simple thing you can do and make happen and can ground you in a very small way. A lot of people don’t think of literature as a practical degree, but that’s the way I approached it. I wasn’t interested in writing techniques at the time, I was interested in myths and narratives and saw them as tools that I could apply to life. I realised that I wasn’t looking to land a secure job as a teacher, I wanted to focus on my side-interests. I wanted to teach kids to trust themselves and pursue their interests and to build their lives, but I felt like a fake because I wasn’t living that truth. As I’ve been working on stuff and trying to make sense of it myself, there’s a pattern of stages of what people go through, a healing, realising and confronting that we’re not on the path we want to be on, this leads into cultivation where we work out what our talents are, which then leads to a building stage where we use our creativity and final to sharing where we build a relationship or community which leads you back to the healing process again. BEST MOMENTS ‘Stories are a way of making sense of things and contextualising ourselves within our own story.’ ‘The answer is in the walking.’ ‘Narratives, metanarratives and archetypes are real and are powerful ways of conceptualising our world, our personal situation, where we’ve come from and where we’re headed.’ ‘Stories can also be scary and uncertain.’ ‘You almost don’t get a choice, you’re pulled to share your creative journey and your story with others. It becomes a duty.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Adventures Of Self Instagram Facebook ABOUT THE GUEST Ben Corkery is a writer, podcaster, and enjoys helping people get unstuck. He thinks we need more creativity in the world and believes lifestyle changes are the way to go. He used lifestyle changes to drastically improve hi mental health and started leaning more into his creativity. He is passionate about this process and it is his mission to share it with others. We all get stuck, we all end up in dead ends, but it’s what you do next that matters. Ben spent $20K to become a formal teacher only to discover how messed up conventional education is. He got really depressed only to find that his doctor couldn't help him. He didn't fit into a career so he started building his own. Ben loves talking about topics such as healing with food and lifestyle: specifically low carb, ketogenic, and carnivore diets, side hustles, alternative education, creativity, and self-improvement. ABOUT THE HOST Taylor Roark is the founder of Galliant Trainings, which guides and facilitates individuals and organisations in Creative Purpose. He has worked variously as a school bus driver, a blacksmith, a Wall Street lawyer and a developer of offshore wind farms. Podcast In Death

We all feel that Eve and Peabody cemented their relationship in "Immortal in Death," and it has only grown from there. They are both focused and detail oriented, but they are both sarcastic in their own way. AJ has a theory that Eve is an enneagram 5 and Peabody is an enneagram 7. We all feel that we connect with Eve and Peabody in different ways; AJ is connects more with Eve, Tara connects more with Peabody, and Jen connects more with Louise, though, she isn't married to a licensed companion, which is a surprise to AJ. Tara loves the fact that this series, even though it's mostly about Eve and Roarke, for the police procedural part of the series, it focuses on two badass female cops. What Peabody brings to that is that it shows that badass female cops can also be girly and have feelings. Because, as Tara says: "having emotions is cool." We all love Peabody's little crush on Roarke (because we all have a crush on Roarke, because he's a pizza). We talk about the scene in "Rapture in Death" where Peabody calls Eve at home and sees Roarke in a towel, and Peabody goes a little brain dead. We were all Peabody in that moment. Tara brings up the fact that a lot of people will see a "Turning Point" in the series as the moment in "Visions" where Eve tells Peabody about her past. But, we all feel that maybe there is no "turning point" in the Eve and Peabody friendship. As Tara says, it's "gradual moments where you see how they handle each other." We talk about whether or not Eve mishandled the situation with Peabody and Charles at the Christmas Party in "Holiday in Death." Eve was definitely a bit harsh there, but was it understandable. Eve is also an Alpha, and as an Alpha, you take care of your pack, and Eve was attempting to take care of Peabody as part of her pack. With McNab, Eve was just a bit weirded out by the whole situation. Tara feels like McNab is one of the most underrated characters in the series. That thought might eventually become a "podvella." And we all have decided we don't want to know about our sibling's sex lives. Tara feels like Eve and Peabody don't argue as much as Tara feels like they should, but they do argue, but they resolve it quickly which is good. But Peabody's character is there to show Eve how to be more emotional, or feel her feelings more. AJ feels like in any argument, apologizing for your part in it right away, because it's never one sided, usually both sides have a part in an argument, and that's typical of Eve and Peabody. We all love the scene where Eve gives Peabody her "magic" pink coat, and how Eve tells her "you're family and that's it." Peabody is then blubbering, and Eve is being sarcastic, and it's very "Eve & Peabody" because that happens several times in the series and we love it every time. We talk about how much we love Eve and Peabody's banter back and forth and we take a moment to give props to Nora Roberts who really is the Queen of dialog. Nobody writes like Nora does. She's amazing. We know we don't say it enough, but: Thank you, Nora!
