Despite being surrounded by the music of countless great female country singers growing up – Lorrie Morgan, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton and others – Jamie Lin Wilson did not see herself pursuing a career in music. As she noted to me on the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast, there were “so many great, strong female artists that I really latched onto.” Yet, the fame that often accompanies playing music in front of thousands was a deterrent. “I would love to be a singer but don't want to be famous,” Wilson said. “I'm good at math so I'll become an engineer.” That was the thinking and thus the path she found herself on – working towards an engineering degree at Texas A&M. Then came that one week when she was 19. Wilson went to see The Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks) and lead singer Natalie Maines took time to play a solo acoustic version of “Cold Day In July.” Wilson thought to herself, “Hey, I could probably do that.” Later in the week, she went to the Cow Hop bar where she caught Susan Gibson, who ironically wrote “Wide Open Spaces” – a huge hit for the Chicks. Wilson was hooked. The math-nerd engineer was now going to be a singer-songwriter. But her long and winding music industry journey has since been anything but conventional. The Sealy, Texas-native cut her teeth playing open mic nights in College Station, then joining the local band the Sidehill Gougers. She eventually left the Gougers and was put together with an all-female group that became The Trishas. They built a unique chemistry, transforming from a collection of singers and players into an actual band. They ultimately found themselves opening up for the likes of Todd Snider and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as well as touring the country with infant babies in tow. Despite their success, however, The Trishas collectively made choice to disband. They had their own priorities, and in Wilson's case, it revolved around life raising a family with husband Roy while playing music on her own terms. Yes, she wanted to tour and make records. But needed to do things like coach her daughter's softball team and “stay married.” In addition to the numerous three-named Texas singers, these are among the many topics we dive into on the latest episode of season three of The Load Out Music Podcast. At the end of our conversation, it was clear that what's most important to Wilson is being present for her family despite making a living as a touring musician, while remaining true to herself, her values and her rural roots. “I am on my own timeline,” she told me. “I'm a small town. I'm sitting in a ‘60s trailer next to a dog pen next to my husband's shop. I tell stories of people who are rural.”

We're kicking off the week being joined by singer-songwriter Bo Armstrong, who next week, Tuesday, November 24, will be releasing his full-length debut album, Chasing Ballads. The Nashville via Dallas songwriter collaborated with producer Brian Douglas Phillips (David Ramirez, Thomas Csorba, Rob Baird) on the effort and created a hearty soundscape that pulls from the Heartland rock meets Americana well. Combined with Armstrong's gift for narrative, the pair often create driving storytellers that embrace their anthemic choruses and melodies. Songs like "Wildfire" and "Here's Looking at You Kid" feel as though they're cut from early '80s Springsteen as they lean in on their open road rhythms. Often, Armstrong taps into the rambling worries and thoughts that keep you from falling asleep on hot summer nights. There's a comfort in talking about restlessness or, in the case of "Used to You" or the closing "You Know What I Look Like in the Dark," raw and intimate vulnerability. During this interview, we talk about moving to Nashville after living in New York, songwriters such as Jamie Lin Wilson, pursing songwriting, deep storytelling narratives, the creative process, and the ins and outs of Chasing Ballads. Hoy vamos a recordar aquellos momentos. The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit". “Times Like These” la representación de Dan Fogelberg. That’s How Rumors Get Started. Rather, songs seek out the true essence of the American Spirit with songs about Jackie Robinson, Tom Petty, grandfathers, Grand Canyon mule rules, Western exploration, rural living, a necessary reminder that we're a country of immigrants, the search for a sense of belonging, and that longing for home. Over the course of this hour, Braun and I talk at length about the recording of their latest album (due out Friday, May 22), songwriting, the affects of the Coronavirus on touring bands (and festival curators), playing drums, and working with the likes of fellow Idaho native Jeff Crosby, Jamie Lin Wilson, Jack Ingram, and Bruce Robison (and various multiple collaborators during The Next Waltz sessions). Be sure to check out the Blue Light compilation, Monday Night Lights. It's 50 songs by 50 Blue Light songwriters for 50 dollars. All proceeds go directly to Blue Light staff during this trying time. When describing Jamie Wilson's voice, two aspects come to mind: that honeyed tenor twang that's become known as one of the sweetest instruments in modern folk music, and that poignant, poetic, down-to-earth point of view she brings to her songwriting. The spotlight shines brighter than ever on both with Holidays & Wedding Rings, her May 2015 release. Even fans may be surprised to realize it’s the first full-length solo album from one of brightest and busiest stars in her recent years amid the folk/Americana/independent country music scene. Multiple approaches, countless gigs, several years and nearly a million miles into what promises to be a grand career, Jamie Wilson not only runs with a good crowd: she never fails to stand out.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Imagine this:  You are in college and after attending a few live musical performances you decide it’s something you yourself just might like to do with your life: sing and play onstage, for a living...  But you haven’t really sang since you were in high school and you don’t play an instrument.  How would this even be possible?  Would you imagine that by fast-forwarding your life by just a year that you would be singing and playing guitar in a band?  Well, this is pretty much the story of Texas Country singer and songwriter, Jamie Lin Wilson!  Jamie Lin Wilson’s music career was something that she hadn’t really even considered until attending those live shows with her cousin in college.  But as soon as she got her first guitar, it was full steam ahead.  She started playing open mic nights in College Station and within a year she was singing lead and harmony vocals as a member of The Gougers. After spending time in The Gougers as well as the all-female group, The Trishas, Jamie has gone on to focus on her career as a solo artist. As a mother and a wife, her life as a touring musician hasn’t been easy, but her determination and perseverance has allowed it all to work out. Jamie’s latest record, and her second full-length solo album, “Jumping Over Rocks” can be picked up by clicking HERE. Sit back and enjoy the episode! In the episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Kyle Carter to talk about a whole lot of live music. We talk about his involvement in the Songwriters Sessions, Songwriters Festival, and his own creation, Mile 0 Fest. Kyle and his family were living, what most consider to be a "comfortable life," but something was missing. After falling in love with Key West, Kyle sold it all and took his love for music to his newly beloved island paradise. Living a "comfortable life" may sound good on paper, but in the end, going after your dreams is what LIFE is all about. More on Mile 0 Fest - (Jan 28 - Feb 1) Mile 0 Fest was founded in 2017, with its first year of production being 2018. It was created on the principle of producing a festival that checked all of the boxes:  Fantastic Line-Up – that has repeat and fan favorites back every year, but also brings in new faces, and fresh talent. The best in Red Dirt Americana Location, Location, Location – A destination that was enjoyable for everyone! Key West has everything, beaches, fishing, water-sports, history, shopping, dining, dancing, its the perfect vacation. Fan Bliss – A festival that puts the fans first. No overcrowding here, we are a boutique festival with an attendance cap.  Over a short period of time, our attendees have become family. With almost every state represented, music fans from all over the country come together once a year to celebrate the common thread that binds them. The Love of great music. Flexibility – You want to come as a VIP and have all of your lodgings, passes, and extras are taken care of with a one-stop-shop? You got it! We have an incredible concierge staff that can make that happen. You want to book everything yourself and just get a pass to the festival? We can do that too! (Check out the Packages and Passes page for more detailed information)  What is Mile 0 Fest? Mile 0 Fest is a 4 Day Red Dirt/Americana Music Festival in Paradise (aka Key West).  When is Mile 0 Fest? The third annual Mile 0 Fest will be January 28th-February 1st. We have our Duval Street Kick-Off Party on Tuesday, January 28th, 2020. It is open to the public and is a free show for everyone. So although the festival is a four-day festival, you want to come in the day before and enjoy the kick-off party.  Where is Mile 0 Fest? Mile 0 Fest is held in Key West, Florida.
