It's a new year Americana Podcast listeners! And with a new year, means new discussions on what makes Americana… well Americana. When we look at this genre, we talk a lot it's history and its future. And over time we've been able to piece together this ongoing timeline and certain elements that are key to its existence. Base influences in songwriting, certain instrumentation, and geography. If you've been a long-time listener, you'd know that many of our previous guests have attributed a great deal of their musical identity to where they learned music from. This of course is a holdover from the new world mentality in the west, where many genres developed due to particularly regional and social integrations over extended periods of time. When looking at Americana we are specifically looking at the European folk trad to bluegrass, blues to rock, and then rock and bluegrass to country as we know it today. That's a lot of words to basically say the place that you identify as home, has as significant of an effect on your musical education as who's albums you choose to listen to growing up. And Kentucky aside, some of the artists that know that best are from Texas and Oklahoma. There's a lot of opinions on the state of Red Dirt Music and Texas Country. Developing as sub genres in the late 80's to early 00's, this very regional brand of music came up in response to commercial country. And I'm not talking Florida Georgia Line commercial, I'm talking Tim McGraw commercial. Who we love. But there's a lot of ups and downs and opinions in the overall conversation but the general one is that Red Dirt and Texas Country became a space for outsiders beyond the Nashville standard. Piggybacking off of the outlaw movement and the historical legacies of artists, particularly Texas native Willie Nelson, these scenes were able to flourish in their respective regions and began to go a bit beyond. They were in a position to challenge the value of industry effect in radio versus organic growth in listenership. They developed loyal followings, local radio play. The works. But due to a long series of unfortunate commercial circumstances, the scenes have presently been relegated very much south of the red river. And I could go on about this, but fortunately this episode you can it straight from the quarter horse's mouth. Americana Podcast speaks with the artists who possibly have the most pertinent opinions on the state of Red Dirt and Texas Country and their weight in the views of Americana music. On this episode we have musical and actual giant Ray Benson from Asleep at The Wheel. Defender of the Dance Hall Randy Rogers, Okie not from Muskogee Jason Boland of Jason Boland and the stragglers, young blood William Beckmann, whip smart Wade Bowan, and philanthropist at heart Josh Abbott. Saddle up and enjoy the show.

Gotta Love Texas Music

A proud native of Texas, Billie Jo is a singer, songwriter, and recording artist blending traditional country vocals with honest songs. Billie Jo is well on her way of establishing herself as one of Texas country's upcoming artists to watch. She has won numerous singing competitions and continues to make a name for herself. Her accomplishments have led her to open for legendary acts such as Gene Watson, Linda Davis, Barbara Fairchild, and The Oakridge Boys. A personal highlight for her was opening for Ray Price, an artist she remembers listening to with her grandparents who is one of her biggest inspirations. Other artists she has opened for include Justin Moore, Wade Bowen, Pat Green, Stoney LaRue, Roger Creager, Sam Riggs, Bryan White, Jerrod Niemann, Josh Abbott and many others.  Coming up in June she will be opening for one of her all time favorites “Diamond Rio” in Fredericksburg Tx.Most recently she was featured on “Real Country” tv show where she filmed for a month in Nashville and was hand picked by Shania Twain to compete on her team.  She made top 14 on that show.  She has also been on The Voice and American Idol.Billie Jo released her first country single back in October of 2018 called “Favorite Place To Be” That song was nominated for Song of the Year in 2019 at the Texas Country Music Awards where she was also nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year!  Her current single out is called “Redneckin' which now has over 26,000 streams on Spotify and was Top 5 on the Texas Internet Radio Charts.https://www.facebook.com/BillieJoTxMusic/https://www.instagram.com/billiejotxmusic/?hl=enhttps://twitter.com/billiejomusic?lang=enhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/4ZVTAR2mX6p9zWJgG3xu1Hhttps://www.bandsintown.com/a/13684468-billie-jo-sewell-music

Episode 141 is with The Panhandlers--the West Texas collaboration between songwriters Josh Abbott, William Clark Green, John Baumann, and Cleto Cordero of Flatland Cavalry--who released their debut self-titled last Spring. As their namesake alludes, these songs are about the Panhandle of Texas and the greater West Texas area in general. As sons of The Panhandle and Far West Texas, their solo catalogs have often echoed the howling winds that drive Heaven and earth across the South Plains, the unrelenting sun that dries out cattle pastures and iron orchards of the rugged oil fields, and most importantly, the resilient folks who claim the Land of Big Sky home. The quartet understands them more than most due to their time working and living in the Hub City of Lubbock for long stretches of time. With The Panhandlers, they've written and recorded an album's worth of richly detailed vignettes and organic dust-blown ballads that celebrate their West Texas roots and heritage. During this interview, we talk about those West Texas roots, talk about the Blue Light songwriting culture, the works of Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver, and hear a handful of stories about life in Lubbock. This week, we kick things off with Texas singer-songwriter Josh Abbott, who at week's end will be releasing his sixth full-length album, The Highway Kind (Friday, Nov. 13). I feel that The Highway Kind not only has some of Abbott's best songwriting to date, it's also Abbott's strongest full-length both thematically and sonically. Abbott has long been an ambitious album maker with loose conceptual themes throughout his career. It's something I'm not sure he's been given his proper due, but it something that's set him apart from much of his Texas Country leaning peers. It isn't always perfect or came across as well as he's intended, but those grander brush strokes of album themes have always been there. And that's in part what makes The Highway Kind so interesting. Abbott feels loose and comfortable without being fully satisfied. The even balanced nature is a driving force for the album, which is largely inspired by the ease, health, and well-being found in Abbott's home life as a father, husband, son, and so on. The concepts and themes aren't forced or buried due to outside influence or pressure. Rather, lead singles such as "The Highway Kind," "The Luckiest," and "Settle Me Down" fit hand in glove with deep cuts such as "Old Men & Rain," "One More Two-Step," and "Women & Wishes" (which very well should be a single). Abbott leans in and embraces those core familial values that connect one generation to the next. "The Highway Kind" and "Settle Me Down" intertwine with one another as they play off sides of the very same coin. It's specifically there where Abbott sings about the highways that lead you away and return you back to home. It's both the adventurous journey and the hearthstone fire that leads the way back.During this interview, we talk about those themes and concepts of The Highway Kind, recording at Sonic Ranch, songwriting, storytelling, The Panhandlers, Terry Allen, and much more. This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Hoy vamos a recordar aquellos momentos. The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit". “Times Like These” la representación de Dan Fogelberg. That’s How Rumors Get Started.

"Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. In this episode of the podcast we visit with singer-songwriter and front-man of Texas band, Flatland Cavalry, Cleto Cordero.  Having never met or talked to Cleto before this interview, the first thing that jumped out to me was just how genuine, humble and appreciative he is for his life and career in music. Cleto explains how his performance at a talent show when he was in his teens, and the reaction of his listeners, put him on the road to be a professional musician.  Even as Flatland Cavalry’s popularity continues to rise, Cleto’s ability to remain firmly grounded and humble is equally impressive. In the interview we also talk about his initial meeting and eventual romance with now-fiancé, singer-songwriter Kaitlin Butts. Cleto is also a part the west Texas all-star group, The Panhandlers assembled by Josh Abbott. So, without further ado, enjoy the episode! THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

So imagine this:  You’re a 15 year-old with musical aspirations.  Fatefully, your sister marries a guy who is in a band, tours on a bus, and is cool if you ride along every summer until you graduate high school… IMO, that’s the hand of God at work.  This is the actual life experience of Texas singer-songwriter, Charlie Shafter. In this episode you will quickly realize just how likeable of a guy Charlie Shafter is.  Shafter’s musical stylings are certainly influenced by other artists he mentions in this interview such as James Taylor, Neil Young and Bob Dylan.  To Yours Truly, Charlie’s music is a nice breath of fresh air in a in the Texas Country – Red Dirt Music world that is sometimes a bit over-run with songs following “way too familiar” of themes. (Beer drinking, skirt chasing, unrequited love, etc.) Charlie and his side-kick, multi-instrumentalist, “Starfire On the Mountain”, can be seen HERE doing what they do best together.  And yes, the guy’s name is Starfire On the Mountain.  You can hear all about how “Starfire” got his name within the episode. During the episode we also visit a bit about how Charlie and Starfire also produced almost 70 episodes of their own podcast years ago called “You Can’t See Us with Starfire and Charlie.”  Charlie explains that their podcast was mostly about non-music topics such as conspiracy theories.  Click HERE to check it out!  Maybe if we get enough people to listen to it Starfire and Charlie will resurrect it! Charlies latest album, “When I was Yours and You were Mine” was mostly penned during a time in his life that can be described as highly emotional and complex.  Fans of Texas Country Music will also be interested to know that Josh Abbott acted as a co-producer on the record along with Dwight Baker.  Click HERE to check it out. On this episode of The Troubadour we are joined by a husband and wife performing, AND songwriting duo, Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe.  Thom is the writer of five #1 singles for other artists - “Redneck Yacht Club,” recorded by Craig Morgan, “Riding with Private Malone” recorded by David Ball, Kyle Park’s “The Night Is Young,” Josh Abbott and Pat Green’s single, “My Texas,” and Kevin Fowler’s “Beer Season.”         In total, Thom has had over 10 singles and over 100 songs recorded by artists including Easton Corbin, Pam Tillis, John Anderson, Lorrie Morgan, Colt Ford, Bucky Covington, George Jones, Trailer Choir, Montgomery Gentry, Buddy Jewell, and Cledus T. Judd. Coley McCabe is also no stranger to success in the music business.  She is a platinum-selling songwriter and she’s performed numerous times on the Grand Ole Opry.  While on RCA Records her song “Grow Young With You” was featured in the Natalie Portman / Ashley Judd film, “Where The Heart Is,” Her writing credits include the award winning group SheDaisy and legendary Loretta Lynn. She also starred in the feature film “Alabama Love Story.” During this interview with Thom and Coley we visit about the dynamics of working as a husband and wife duo in the music business while maintaining a great marriage.  As is heard in the interview, we find out that it’s important for each person in the relationship to understand when to ride “Shotgun” to the other person, and when to be the driver. Fittingly enough, Thom and Coley’s latest record is aptly titled “Shotgun” and can be picked up at www.thomandcoley.com . Thom and Coley have also found a bit of a niche within the “Trop Rock” genre which Thom describes loosely as “people who like Jimmy Buffett songs.”  The duo is now often found on show billings in tropical places with lots of sun and water!  They’ve even brought a little bit of this genre back to Texas by creating and hosting the annual “Lone Star Luau” in Marble Falls, TX (http://lonestarluau.com/).  Lonestar Luau 4 will be happening in February of 2020.  Click on the link to learn more about it and to secure tickets! While we didn’t get a chance to visit about it in depth in the interview, I would highly suggest that for those interested in songwriting and stories behind hit songs, to follow Thom Shepherd on YouTube.  He’s producing a series of YouTube videos called “Story Behind the Song” in which he interviews writers of specific hit songs and learns how the songs came to be.  The icing on the top of the videos, at least for me, is to hear the songwriter perform the hit with nothing more than an acoustic guitar.  Simply great stuff in my opinion!  Check it out Thom’s YouTube page by clicking HERE. Grant and Brendan talk about the Jerry Jeff Walker guitar song book that inspired his love of guitar playing, why it wasn't the smoothest transition when he began singing along, and how a show at the local Taco Shop in High School helped create his love of performing. Grant explains why music became the goal during his time at Texas Tech University, how a show at the Blue Light helped change his path after meeting Texas artist Josh Abbott, and the up and down journey he's been on over the past three years during the beginning of his career. Finally, Grant talks about mixing the new sounds of Nashville with the classic sounds of Texas and the new music he has coming, produced by Music City Producer Jonathan Singleton.
