We're joined today by Chef Johnny Lee, the mastermind behind Rasarumah, one of LA's hottest new restaurants serving inventive Southeast Asian food with a heavy Malaysian bent. Chef Johnny joins us to talk about the new concept, but also about what it was like to say goodbye to his deeply personal project Pearl River Deli. We talk about Hainan chicken, the struggles of learning to be a business operator when you've mostly worked the line your entire career, and what it's been like to partner with Last Word Hospitality on his new exciting venture. But first, I had the distinct pleasure of attending Taco Bell's Live Mas Live event in Brooklyn earlier this week. This is their event in the mold of Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in which they offer sneak peeks from their test kitchen and roll out the new menu items for the year ahead. I met up with Daniel Wargo AKA Forking Around in the lobby of our hotel the morning after the event to debrief. Yes, we talk about which drops we're most excited about, but we also ask ourselves what LA restaurants can learn from the Live Mas lifestyle. I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed this event - not just the food, but really the ethos behind what Taco Bell does to innovate and to build a relationship with its fans. I think there's tons that even the most mom and pop of establishments can learn by taking a page out of the chalupa handbook, so to speak. In this episode of "Redefining Family," I had the pleasure of reconnecting with my long-time friend, Johnny Lee, who shared his deeply personal journey toward parenthood alongside his husband, Sebastian. Having known Johnny for over 15 years, it was both exciting and enlightening to delve into a conversation that explored not only his path to fatherhood but also his coming out experience and the challenges he faced along the way.Johnny and Sebastian, who have been together for more than 17 years and were legally married on the first day same-sex marriage was legalized in New York in 2011, embarked on an emotionally taxing and expensive journey to become parents. They faced numerous hurdles, including the complex process of selecting an egg donor and finding the right surrogate, as well as the heartache of multiple failed attempts at pregnancy. Ultimately, their perseverance paid off, and they are now proud parents of two boys, ages six and four, through gestational surrogacy. As we discussed Johnny's current surrogacy journey, I learned that he had just made a deposit for embryos to be created, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He shared the intricacies of the egg donor selection process, likening it to a dating site, and reflected on the emotional rollercoaster that comes with the territory. Johnny emphasized the importance of patience and the reality that the journey to parenthood is often not a quick one, especially for those considering surrogacy or adoption. The conversation took a poignant turn as Johnny opened up about his coming out journey, which began at a young age in a strict evangelical Christian household. He recounted the challenges he faced when his mother confronted him about his sexuality, leading to years of difficult conversations and strained relationships with his parents. Despite the initial turmoil, Johnny's story is one of resilience and hope, as he ultimately found acceptance and love within his family, particularly during his wedding to Sebastian. We also touched on the impact of cultural expectations, particularly within the Korean-American community, and how these shaped Johnny's upbringing and his parents' reactions to his sexuality. His candid reflections on the complexities of family dynamics and the evolution of his parents' understanding of LGBTQ+ issues were both moving and insightful. As we wrapped up our conversation, Johnny shared his thoughts on religion and how his relationship with faith has changed over the years. He expressed a sense of disillusionment with organized religion, particularly in light of the harm it can cause to the LGBTQ+ community, while also acknowledging the journey his parents took to reconcile their beliefs with their love for him. This episode is a testament to the power of love, acceptance, and the ongoing journey of redefining what family means. Johnny's story is not only inspiring but also serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and compassion in the face of adversity. I hope you enjoy this heartfelt conversation as much as I did.

In 1980, country music singer, Johnny Lee, had a # 1 hit song for weeks. Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places was about a fruitless search for true love, finally satisfied, as expressed in his lyrics "...You came knockin' on my heart's door, you're everything I've been looking for..." Lee's lyrics don't come close to the poignant question of Heavenly messengers in a Jerusalem cemetery 2,000 years ago!

The untold story of Melbourne, FL 80s New Wave/Surf Punk band, LOCALS ONLYJoin us, as Brian Cleary (keyboards) and Johnny Lee (bass guitar) tell the story of their 1980's new wave/surf punk band, Locals Only. Locals Only formed in Melbourne, FL in 1980 and were earliest new wave surf bands of the era out of the Central Florida region. They played at venues such as Sleep Out Louie's, Brassy's, FIT Rat, The Boardwalk and more. The band played throughout Central Florida, opening for touring bands such as T.S.O.L. LA3C Food and Music Festival is coming to Downtown LA's Historic Core this weekend. We're joined by Joey Rubin, who leads food curation for the festival, to hear about how him and his team put together one of the coolest food festival experiences this city has ever seen. From a Oaxacan sushi pop-up featuring the folks over at Simon in Silver Lake, to a bonkers collab between Poltergeist's Diego Argoti and Pearl River Deli's Johnny Lee that may or may not feature an orange chicken burrito, this is truly the kind of food experience that could only happen in LA. So listen to the conversation with Joey, go buy the $20 tickets - $20! That's it! - and I'll see you there, dear listener. But first, I'm going to give you a quick rundown of 3 news stories that caught my eye this week. There's a LA restaurant that's been named to Eater's list of Best New Restaurants in America 2023, a fascinating look at Erewhon's questionable past, and some fried chicken drama cracking on between Timeout LA and Le Coupe. The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack is a powerhouse collection of rhythm and blues that captures the essence of the iconic film. It features a blend of classic blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Cab Calloway. The Blues Brothers originated as a musical comedy act created by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in the late 1970's. Inspired by their shared love for blues and R&B music, Aykroyd and Belushi created fictional characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, as their alter egos. The act gained popularity, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1978 and eventually to the creation of the Blues Brothers motion picture in 1980. In the film, parolee Jake Blues is joined by his blood brother Elwood Blues on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by reuniting their band and raising the $5000.00 for the property tax bill. Their quest brings them to a number of characters played by iconic artists including Cab Calloway and James Brown. The resulting soundtrack stands as a testament to the enduring power of blues music and left an indelible mark on both the film and music industry.John Lynch dons his suit and dark sunglasses to bring us this feature. Minnie the MoocherCab Calloway originally presented Minnie the Moocher back in 1931, and reprises the song for this film. Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and a popular vocalist of the swing era. Calloway plays Curtis in the film, a father figure and mentor to the Blues Brothers, and performs this song as a warm-up to the concert.Jailhouse RockAs the movie ends with Jake and Elwood back in prison after successfully paying off the tax bill for the orphanage. The band plays Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" for the inmates as the credits roll. Jake Blues (Belushi) takes lead on this upbeat number.ThinkAretha Franklin covers her own song as Mrs. Murphy, trying to persuade her husband Matt Murphy to not join the band. Franklin had a lot of difficulty lip synching the song and would have preferred to just sing it live. The Blues Brothers join her on this cover.Gimme Some Lovin'The Blues Brothers cover this piece originally performed by the Spencer Davis Group and made famous by Steve Winwood. While the song was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, in the film it gets a decidedly cooler reception in the honky tonk bar in which it is performed. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Lookin' for Love by Johnny Lee (from the motion picture “Urban Cowboy”)With the decline of disco, crossover country & western hits became popular. John Travolta starred in this movie which capitalized on the popularity of country music. STAFF PICKS:Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by the ClashBruce brings us the third single from the Clash's third album, “London Calling.” This was a double album, and a post-punk turn by the group. The song was originally intended to be a giveaway flexi single, but was put on the album at the last minute when that deal fell through. Mick Jones wrote and sings lead on this song, inspired by his tumultuous relationship with Stiltz guitarist Viv Albertine.Free Me Big by Roger DaltreyWayne features the front man for the Who in a solo effort written by Argent guitarist Russ Ballard. The song is on Daltrey's 1980 solo album “McVicar” It also appears on the soundtrack for the movie "McVicar" in which Daltrey plays John McVicar, an inmate in prison for a number of bank robberies. The other members of the Who play on this song as uncredited musicians. We Live for Love by Pat BenatarRob's staff pick is performed by Benatar, but it is often confused for a Blondie song. It is a single from Benatar's debut album, “In the Heat of the Night,” and was written by Neil Giraldo, Benatar's then-guitarist and now-husband (and still guitarist). It was the leading track from side two.Ride Like the Wind by Christopher CrossLynch's staff pick went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the number 1 slot by Blondie's “Call Me.” It is Cross's debut single from his Grammy winning 1979 self-titled album. Cross dedicated the song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979. Michael McDonald is easy to identify on backing vocals. NOVELTY TRACK:Turning Japanese by the VaporsSongwriter and Vapors lead singer David Fenton says this is all the cliches about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to. This new wave song went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Moore's Ford lynchings, or the 1946 Georgia lynching, refer to the brutal murders of four young African Americans by a mob of white men on July 25, 1946. The incident occurred near Moore's Ford Bridge in Walton and Oconee counties, Georgia. The victims were two married couples: George W. and Mae Murray Dorsey, and Roger and Dorothy Malcolm. The case attracted national attention, prompting large protests in Washington, D.C., and New York City. President Harry Truman created the President's Committee on Civil Rights and introduced anti-lynching legislation in Congress, but it was blocked by the Southern Democratic bloc. If you're interested in a casual or long-term relationship with the voice and mind behind 2000's "Down With The Sickness", please forward your photograph (SFW only, please) and your turn-ons/turn-offs to this program's headquarters and I promise all materials will be forwarded by hand (ANALOG STYLE) to a trusted member of Team Draiman. Please enjoy this week's program, despite the mental image of David Draiman scrolling thru a dating site.
