We've got a TLR favorite on this week's episode of Stories Behind the Songs - Adam Craig! Adam has so many impressive cuts like “Church Pew or Bar Stool” by Jason Aldean, “Close Your Eyes” by Parmalee, and George Strait's 2024 single from his upcoming album, “MIA Down In MIA”.  We dive into those songs as well as the story behind his unreleased Cody Johnson cut written with Jordan Walker and Matt Rogers that will be on Cody's next album.  Adam also talks about his past publishing and record deals, moving to Nashville to be an artist, playing the Opry stage, writing for a “viral moment”, and trying to impress the songwriting icon, Dean Dillon. We also get a verse/chorus of “Church Pew and Barstool” and “MIA Down In MIA”.  Adam is a good friend of mine and a regular on our stage, and I'm so glad we got the opportunity to dig deeper into his story and career and, of course, his songs! In the 1950s, Frank Sinatra famously proclaimed Jack Daniel's the “nectar of the gods.”  Sales doubled, the warehouses emptied, and Mr. Daniel's “nectar” was on allocation for the next twenty-five years.  In 2013, a state law in Tennessee established a legal definition of “Tennessee Whiskey” for the first time, better known as the “Lincoln County Process.”  While a few whiskey nerds followed the arcane legal and political developments that paved the way for official “Tennessee Whiskey,” on November 4, 2015 the worlds of music and Tennessee whiskey would again collide when Justin Timberlake made a surprise appearance to join Chris Stapleton on-stage for the 2015 CMA awards.  While Tennessee Whiskey was originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove in 1981 and made famous by George Jones in 1983, the Stapleton-Timberlake collab equated to a sonic boom in the worlds of music and brown liquor, bringing a new level of national and international attention to Tennessee's favorite spirit that was now a “category” all its own.  It almost goes without saying that sales of Stapleton's debut studio album, “Traveller,” produced with Dave Cobb, would also explode, winning numerous awards and ultimately becoming the top selling country album of the 2010s.  The story of Tennessee Whiskey is complicated, and fascinating.  Join us for this very special episode of Climbing the Charts as John Brittle, real estate guru and founder of The Whiskey House, a 501(c)(3), and Heath Clark, a recovering healthcare attorney turned whiskey entrepreneur and founder of H Clark Distillery, tell us the incredible true story of how Tennessee went from almost 1,000 distilleries before Prohibition, to having just TWO distilleries until Prichard's opened in 1997, to now having almost 50 distilleries with almost 30 that are now part of the officially designated “Tennessee Whiskey Trail.”  There are few better at turning phrases or crafting tall-tales than these guests (e.g., “I can have a one-night stand with a bottle of wine, but with a bottle of whiskey, I can have a long-term relationship.” — John G. Brittle).  We promise, whether you are a whiskey novice or aficionado, you will learn a lot and laugh even more through this episode, and you'll also have a true appreciation for the fact that all bourbon is whiskey, but that not even all Tennessee whiskey is “Tennessee Whiskey” . . . . with the exception of Prichard's!

A Nashvillian by way of Philadelphia, Vinnie Paolizzi has spent the better part of the last decade in the songwriting trenches, making a name for himself as a rising singer-songwriter to watch. His abilities as a live performer have led him to various roles from playing guitar for rising star Brittney Spencer to playing his original music in the round with songwriting legend Dean Dillon.  Vinnie self-titled LP— (out now) was produced by Old Crow Medicine Show's Mike Harris, and it  showcases a pocket of the Nashville community that has blazed its own trail in a time when Music Row seems to have forgotten its past, evident clearly in this first taste of the new music. Harkening back to the halcyon days of songwriting in Nashville—back when people like Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, and Guy Clark were kicking around and writing timeless songs before they became household names—Vinnie Paolizzi is ripe with collaborations from up and comers like Chapman and Meg McRee, as well as tried and true road warriors like Harris and Adam Hood. And the final product feels like that, like cracking a beer on the porch and working through a new song with an old friend.  For more on Vinnie Paolizzi, visit: vinniepaolizzimusic.com

This is Part Two of the Jamie Richards Real Deal Interview. Please visit stonecoldcountry.net for the full interview. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hot off of the heels of one of his biggest career hits, Twang, Jamie Richards shows no signs of slowing down. With a professional career that started in Nashville in the 90s, Jamie's worked with several of the top major labels. But it was his Curb Records debut in 2001 that got things going for our September featured artist Jamie Richards. There is so much to love about Jamie's soul searing vocals, but Jamie is also an accomplished songwriter whose songs have been covered by Walt Wilkins, Ken Mellons, and Kevin Fowler to name a few. Jamie has also written with the very best hall of fame songwriters known to the world. Dean Dillon, Larry Cordle, Rory Burch, and Jim Rushing are just a few of the notables that have broken bread with the near legendary honky tonker. In this two part reflective interview, Jamie takes us to his Nashville years, the best song he's ever written, and the future. This is an up, and close view of an artist that has never compromised his musical integrity. Jamie Richards is among only a select few that still remain proudly, and lovingly holding the torch high for traditional country music, and we are all better for it.  For fans of 90's country! https://b3967f2ko4s8mzdasd3bferl9y.hop.clickbank.net/ (https://b3967f2ko4s8mzdasd3bferl9y.hop.clickbank.net/)

This is part one of a two part series. Hot off of the heels of one of his biggest career hits, Twang, Jamie Richards shows no signs of slowing down. In this two part reflective interview, Jamie takes us back to the very beginning, his parent's dairy farm, the big tent revivals, and the paying your dues decade in Nashville. This is an up, and close view of an artist that has never compromised his musical integrity. Jamie Richards is among only a select few that still remain proudly, and lovingly holding the torch high for traditional country music, and we are all better for it.  Check out installment I of this two part series. We had the pleasure of interviewing Susan Hickman over Zoom video! Determination and passion paint the walls of country artist Susan Hickman‘s life, causing fans to recognize these vibrant traits undeniably inspire the way she crafts her music. While these are characteristics most acquire as they mature, they seem to be inherent in Hickman's ethereal essence. At only the age of five she began playing piano and added violin lessons as well a few short years later. As if two instruments wasn't enough for a young Hickman to handle, at the age of twenty-one, she began teaching herself to play guitar in the living room of her family home in Atascocita, Texas. Hickman finds a unique way to connect her own voice with the instruments she surrounds herself with and has the ability to create melodies which are very much “Louder Than Words”. At only 12 with no previous experience other than playing and singing in church, Hickman scoured the Yellow Pages for every talent agency in the Houston area and then went on to travel across the country to pursue her dreams. Upon recollecting her journey the first few years Hickman is quick to refer to her mother as a saint from the long business trips to sitting at her shows in the honky-tonks during the early hours of the morning. In 2010, Susan was named CMA Close Up Who New To Watch In 2010 and has mastered the art of live performances. Hickman's energy, can-do attitude, and not to mention her music has allowed her to captivate audiences with various large scale acts such as Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina, Shenandoah, Dean Dillon, Robert Earl Keen & Daryle Singletary. While 2010 was a pivotal year for Hickman it also proved to be a difficult one as well, she relied heavily upon her determination and positive attitude. Because she was playing guitar and singing nearly 10 hours a day between rehearsals and shows, Hickman was left having to get two surgeries. But if you've learned one thing about this performance powerhouse, it's that nothing will stop her mind from taking her where she needs to go, not even her own body. Her injuries did not stop her from developing quite a following in the U.S. and Europe. Susan has played through her pain and entertained audiences at Nashville's renowned CMA Music Festival and even at France's 23rd Annual Country Rendez-Vous Festival. Not to mention winning Texas CMA Female Vocalist of The Year 2015.As Hickman reflects on her gypsy lifestyle she shares she has done a lot of soul searching. She has taken time to discover herself as a person and then as an artist, though she cleverly mentions they often fight with one another. Only in her thirties, Hickman seems wise beyond her years and has a bright career ahead of her. She is a strong role model for women everywhere, showing them anything is possible when you live out your story with a strong will and a big heart. We want to hear from you! Hoy vamos a recordar aquellos momentos. The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit". “Times Like These” la representación de Dan Fogelberg. That’s How Rumors Get Started. Episode 32 – We wrap April up with another amazing songwriter, and now author Jeremy Spillman. Jeremy has had cuts by many artists including Eric Church, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, LANCO, Trace Adkins, Brandy Clark, Midland, Little Big Town, Reba McEntire, Brantley Gilbert, Jon Pardi, Luke Bryan and many more. He just released his first book, DeVine Devils, and if you have not read this then, what are you waiting on. Jeremy proves why he is one of the elite writers out there. On top of all of that, every day of my life I look down at my left forearm and see the title to my favorite song ever. It just so happens to be one of Jeremy's. "Sinner's Like Me" is a staple and an anthem to myself and other Church Choir members. We will discuss this song, and why it will always be one of Eric Church's biggest songs. Kentucky born and bred, Jeremy Spillman moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his dream of success as a songwriter at 24. Since then, Jeremy has had songs recorded by Eric Church, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, LANCO, Trace Adkins, Brandy Clark, Midland, Little Big Town, Reba McEntire, Brantley Gilbert, Jon Pardi, Luke Bryan, Lee Ann Womack, Darius Rucker, and many more. Spillman’s debut novel, The DeVine Devils, is also available as a full cast audiobook and has an accompanying soundtrack. The music was written by Spillman with Nashville songwriters Randy Montana, Dean Dillon, and Clint Ingersoll. The audiobook and soundtrack were recorded, produced, and mixed by Spillman at his home studio.Presented By:Arlo RevolutionCinematic Wedding Films, music videos, and promos Find them on Facebook and arlorevolution.comPatreonThank you to all our Patreon’s and Show sponsors. "Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. After the boys barely escape a massacre by the U.S. Army in which their father is killed, they swear vengeance and spend the next decade honing their skills in music and fighting. In addition to the book, Spillman also worked with Dean Dillon on an EP which brings the story to life through some amazing music. Following this, I've got two songs for you from the DeVine Devils EP—“Something Bad This Way Comes” and “Hard Times Come Again No More.” Follwing that, I've got a great song from the Brooklyn-based Typhoid Rosie, “Sailing On.” They have a show coming up in Boston on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Jungle in Somerville with Fuzzy Bumble, Tysk Tysk Tysk, and Wild Allegations, 7pm, $6.

In describing the life and career of Texas Singer-Songwriter, Mark Powell, it’s really kind of hard to know where to begin and where to end.  The west Texas native has carved out a piece of life for himself that is the envy of many, including Yours Truly.  But, like all great success stories, the road to get to where his is today has had a lot of twists and turns. The son of a performing musician, Mark followed suit and at an early age he found himself on stages playing twin fiddles with his father.  It was also during this time of his life that Mark discovered he had the unique ability to understand how to play most songs after hearing them just a single time, as well as remember almost every word. As adolescence gave way to the later stages in becoming a grown up, Mark found himself in college and performing with his own group.  Not long after this Mark loaded up and headed for Nashville with a developmental deal from Universal. While Mark only spent about a year and a half in Nashville, he was able to learn more about the business side of country music and songwriting and found himself in writing rooms with legendary country songwriters like Mac McAnally and Walt Aldridge. Upon his return to Texas Mark entered a brief period of his life in which he held down a “real job” as a banker; something that allowed him to gain useful knowledge to use later on his musical endeavors. Through a twist of fate in what was supposed to be Mark helping to put together a show for a local venue, the Outlaws and Legends Music Festival was born.  The backstory to this event is very interesting and you won’t want to miss it in the interview.  This festival has now become a top-tier festival in the scene and is approaching its 10th year.  An entire episode could focus on the festival itself.  In the conversation Mark also talks about co-writing and his relationship with true country music songwriting legend, Dean Dillon.  Currently, when Mark’s not writing or performing in Texas, he can probably be found somewhere playing music or trout fishing in the mountains of Colorado.  That sounds pretty much like an ideal situation to me! Sit back, relax, and enjoy our visit with one of the more interesting guests we ever had on the podcast: Mark Powell! https://markpowellmusic.com/ https://www.outlawsandlegends.com/ We also want to point out that the 55th Annual Courtland Funday is quickly approaching and will be held the last weekend in July. Hit Songwriter, Producer & Performing Artist, Billy Yates “does his rockin' on the stage”! The healing power of music is Billy Yates' ministry & with songs recorded by George Jones, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Sara Evans & more, plus two concurrent shows in Branson, he stays busy evangelizin'. I had the privilege of connecting with Billy for a conversation & impromptu guerrilla style video shoot between his shows - the powerhouse Raiding the Country Vault concert & the more intimate Hit Songwriters in the Round. It was awesome to sit with him while he performed some of his hit songs in the theater setting before the crowd arrived. He shares his insights regarding our human vulnerabilities & how songs provide a vehicle to alleviate loneliness & suffering as well as lifting us into joy. Be sure to catch the moment when, during the Raiding the Country Vault concert, I knew I had to have him on The Naked Vibes Show!   Enjoy the show on NAKED VIBES TV: SHOW NOTES (times are for audio): 4:33 - Billy Yates talks about moving to Nashville to pursue his dream of being a singer, finding great songwriters to mentor him, & recording his first song that was eventually recorded by George Jones. 5:03 - LIVE ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE: Billy Yates plays the intro to “I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair”, recorded by George Jones. The song won a CMA Event of the Year. 5:57 - “I do my rockin' on the stage” is one of my favorite lines from this song. The song became an anthem, not only for Jones, but for many of his older fans who intended to keep livin' large! George Foreman was a huge fan & appeared in a video for the song. 6:38 - Julia Cameron talks about, in The Artist's Way, the importance of starting anything you desire to do at any age. It's never too late! 7:18 - Billy Yates' show is about to start at his theater, where we're recording, so there's a lot of activity in the room. He talks about the evolution of becoming a songwriter in Nashville by singing on song demoes for other writers. They encouraged him on the value of his gift for phrasing. He had to learn the craft to tap into his skill for writing lyrics & melodies. 9:04 - Frank Dycus & Dean Dillon were instrumental in Billy's development as a songwriter. He's written & recorded many songs with them & says he most enjoys the friendships & feels like it's therapeutic to collaborate, putting a puzzle together with others & having fun in the process. 10:09 - Billy talks about the inception of the creative process as a gift from God. He's dreamed complete songs - when he wakes up & records them, he knows it's coming from something beyond him. 11:11 - Music is healing. We don't think about how important it is to our lives. Songs help us to feel less alone, uplift us when we're down, & often teach us to see ourselves. 11:45 - Billy Yates likes writing from a first person perspective because it helps the listener connect with the artist. He knew his song “Choices” had to be recorded by someone who could really own it & allow themselves to be very vulnerable in performing it. George Jones made it a hit. 12:34 - All human beings have the same experiences - pain, joy, hardship, love - even though they may come in different shades. This is how even the solo writing experience becomes collaborative with the recording artist, making it their own by bringing their personal experiences & emotions to it. 13:23 - “Choices” was written Billy Yates with Mike Curtis, a great piano player & melody writer. He was coming to Billy's house to write & Billy didn't have a piano. Billy told him, “We've got three chords & the truth; that's all we've got today!” Though they didn't have George Jones in mind when writing the song, they eventually approached him with it because Billy felt like it was a song that offered healing. 14:00 - Billy knew the song would eventually find its way to the right artist. It took some time before it was recorded. When he was touring with Alan Jackson,

EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE In celebration of Father's Day Scott and Paul discuss the influence their dads had on their musical development. Plus, you'll hear a recording of Paul's late dad, Dr. Tom Duncan, singing his only known original song! PART TWO - 09:13 mark Woody Bomar's in-depth interview SYNOPSIS Scott sits down in Nashville with his dad to get the story about how one of Roy Orbison's bandmates became Woody's guardian angel; why he got shot at on the way to a gig; how he went from pitching Kris Kristofferson's songs to writing #1 hits of his own; why he signed a young teenager named Taylor Swift to her first publishing deal; the reason he says his first cut might actually be his last; and what inspired him to write an album's worth of songs about Route 66 after an exciting career working with country music's biggest names.  ABOUT WOODY BOMAR Woody Bomar began his music career as a songwriter, landing two #1 hits with Conway Twitty’s “We Did But Now You Don’t” and Jim Glaser’s “You’re Getting to Me Again.” He hit the Top 20 with Loretta Lynn’s “Cheatin’ on a Cheater” and had songs recorded by Lee Greenwood, Lynn Anderson, TG Sheppard, Rhonda Vincent, Hank Williams, Jr., and others. Bomar eventually moved to the other side of the desk at Nashville’s Combine Music, where his duties included promoting the songs of Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Guy Clark, Tony Joe White, and others. Woody soon departed and teamed with business partner Kerry O’Neil to launch Little Big Town Music with former Combine writers John Scott Sherrill and Bob DiPiero. Serving as President and General Manager, Bomar would go on to sign a stable of songwriters that earned fifteen #1 hits, as well as thirty Top 10 singles and more than 500 major cuts by artists such as Faith Hill, George Strait, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Diamond Rio, Kenny Chesney, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Neil Diamond, Dusty Springfield and Peter Frampton. Little Big Town was ultimately purchased by Sony/ATV, which hired Bomar as Senior Vice President and General Manager. During his eight year tenure with Sony, Woody signed Dierks Bentley, Rascal Flatts, Josh Turner, Marty Stuart and Blake Shelton, and was instrumental in bringing Taylor Swift, Gretchen Wilson, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert to the company’s roster. In addition to the new signings, Woody worked with an existing catalog of songs by Tom Douglas, Dean Dillon, Rodney Crowell, Gretchen Peters, Bobby Braddock, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and many others. After departing Sony/ATV Woody  launched his second independent publishing company, Green Hills Music Group, where he continues to advocate for great songwriters and secure recordings by artists such as George Strait, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, Rascal Flatts, Hunter Hayes, and Hilary Scott of Lady Antebellum. Woody is a two-time recipient of The Nashville Songwriters Association’s President’s Award and is an inductee into the Middle Tennessee State University’s Mass Communications Wall of Fame.

Dean Dillon Dean was born March 26, 1955. Hailing from the small Tennessee town, Lake City. Located in East Tennessee right outside of Knoxville with a population of around 1,700 people. Dean’s songs would go on to be known all around the world. Dean was inducted into the Nashville songwriters hall of fame in 2002. Dean also has the look of the quintessential cowboy, complete with a mustache that even Sam Elliott would appreciate. Dean wrote “Set em up Joe” recorded by Vern Gosdin which is probably the song most identified with Vern to this day. “Is it raining at your house” is also one of the most popular ballads Gosdin ever recorded. Also wrote Keith Whitley’s first single “Miami My Amy” and the hit “Homecoming 63” Also my favorite Brooks and Dunn song “I’ll never forgive my heart” Kenny Chesney “A lot of things different” which is probably the most pure country song of Kenny’s career. Dean also wrote Tennessee Whiskey which was one George Jones signature songs and later helped Chris Stapleton burst onto the national scene with his bluesy rendition of the song. But Dean’s biggest success was writing for George Strait. From the beginning Dean, was George’s go to for hit songs and album cuts as well. Dean even wrote “Unwound” which was George Strait’s first single and kicked off Strait’s unbelievable 35 plus year career. Here’s a few of the song “It ain’t cool to be crazy over you” “I’ve come to expect it from you” “If I know me” “Easy come, easy go” “Marina Del Ray” “Nobody in his right mind would have left her” “Ocean Front Property” “The Chair” which both are two of the most clever lyrically that Strait ever recorded. “The chair” was co-written with another country music songwriting legend Hank Cochran. And was written in about 20 minutes after a late night song writing session. Also “Back to being me” which is one of my favorite album cuts from the “ If you ain’t lovin, you ain’t livin” album. Dean also has written songs for Toby Keith, Leann Womack, Alabama, and Shenandoah. Dean has a great website deandillon.com that has a ton of cool information about his career. In 2017, a documentary was released entitled “Tennessee Whiskey, The Dean Dillon Story.”

One of the most masterful voices in Country music ever, Gene Watson still sings in the same key as 30 years ago and continues to prove why he is rightly referred to as “The Singer’s Singer”. His powerful voice and multi-octave range allows him to sing some of the most challenging songs with an ease that comes from pure, natural talent as well as from his many years performing onstage. Real. Country. Music. finds the the 72 year-old Country legend once again proving he’s the master of classic Country music. He remains defiantly Country in the face of today’s more pop oriented offerings and is proud his legions of fans rely on him to keep traditional Country music alive and well.  With that in mind, Gene delved back into history to pull out some overlooked gems in other artist’s catalogs as well  as a few of his own songs that are fan favorites but are no longer available.  As Gene noted, “Today’s songwriters  are not really writing the kind of songs fans of serious classic country are wanting. Traditional country is about life,  heartaches, loves and family. I’ve got to relate to the words as something that either happened to me or happened  to someone I know.  It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around a song that’s simply about riding a tractor or just  drinking beer with friends. I want more out of a song. So I went back to some classic songwriters like Kris  Kristofferson, Larry Gatlin, Bill Anderson, Keith Whitley, Dean Dillon, Hank Cochran and Dave Kirby – just to name  a few of the greats.”
