Please note, there is some high-level discussion about child abuse (including sexual abuse) in this episode. The Broken Spoke is the true story of one man's determination to confront his childhood demons and finally free himself from his past.Mike Wesolowski grew up in a home filled with every type of pain. The only way he knew how to cope with the daily torture was through self-destructive behaviors, compartmentalization, and substance abuse. After decades of coming to terms with the shame and guilt of what he endured, he was finally able to confront his past and conquer his addiction. Talk about GRIT! Wow. His healing journey has been amazing and I--Beth Campbell--am proud to call him my uncle. In episode 070 of the Cafe Grit Podcast, I sit down with Mike to talk about his book The Broken Spoke. His honesty, vulnerability, and authenticity will blow you away. Please visit The Broken Spoke (book) Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thebrokenspokebook for updates.Thank you Mike for opening up and being In The GRIT Seat!

I love this book! Dave Dalton Thomas has written a book about the history of Willie's 4th of July picnic called "Picnic Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Tradition." Great book and Dave gives us the history and stories that you have never heard. Pick up the book and listen now as Dave joins Bob at the Broken Spoke.
The late James White certainly left the legacy of the Broken Spoke in great hands. He would be proud of all the work his daughter Ginny, and his son-in-law Michael have done with the legendary Broken Spoke. Let's catch up with them.
Guitarist Will Knaak join Bob and Monte at historic Broken Spoke. Did you know Will started playing at the Spoke when he was only 12 years old? Listen and learn more about Will's amazing musical journey.
This episode carries content warnings for death, the description of corpses, false memories, illusions, vomiting, and medical experimentation. Where has the crew of the Blue Channel gone? For Eclectic Opposition, the answer is easy, if dire: In the passenger seat of a Baseline-C security vehicle, under the watchful eyes of the Divine Resonance, scrambling for a way out. For the support staff, like Hunting Tomorrow and Partial Palisade, the answer is scanning for the others. And those others? They are so close—under five miles away from the ship's landing zone—yet so, so far. Deep in the Catacombs of Dust. Deeper, still, living new lives, considering what might be, what might have been, and what yet might still come. This week on PALISADE: Seize the Chance Pt. 5 Let loose the wide world that holds you / Scratch through / Your waves linger Dossier People Partial Palisade (he/him): A man who was once a Divine, now living in the shell of a being quite unlike what he once was. Midnite Matinee (she/her): Leporine scout and member of the Blue Channel. She and her trusty Pack-model light AutoHollow Popcorn used to run a repo company, but now are tentatively committed to the Cause and Millennium Break. Elle Evensong (she/they): Elle arrived to Palisade along with the first wave of Devotees, making a name for herself as a cunning combatant and clever commander. She became a poster child for Twilight Mirage's support of Palisade (and, for members of the Dim Liturgy, a prophesied bridge between the past and the future). But as the war began to heat up, she seemed to vanish into the background. In fact, they were working for the Divine, Arbitrage as a double agent. Cori blames them for the death of her father. Pilot of the Cataphract. Murchy “Murch” Saltburn (she/her): A gig-cop working for Lock & Cross Security Services in Baseline-C. Alise Breka (she/her): Once, Alise was most popular for her Renegade Hearts books of daring pulp adventure. Now she is one of the chief propagandists of Millennium Break, turning their struggles (and victories) into novels, screenplays, and other media. Factions Bilateral Intercession: One of two factions vying for leadership of the Principality, comprised by Stels Kesh and Nideo, and lead by the so-called Peaceful Princept, Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh (he/him), who took control of the faction from the Curtain, a secretive intelligence organization with roots in Kesh's ancient spy operations. The “Bilats” are a conservative and reactionary force, aiming to return the Principality to its roots both literally and figuratively. After a long campaign against the Pact of Free States, they managed to take control of Palisade. The Bilateral Intelligence Service: Formerly called the Curtain, the BIS is a Kesh-operated organization which specializes in espionage, subterfuge, and surveillance. Recently removed from power on Palisade Stel Kesh: The oldest established power in the galaxy, built around a stuffy (and secretive) aristocracy. They are tied to the Past. History, knowledge, stubbornness. Stel Nideo: Created the largest faith in the empire, and used that influence to shape (and surveil) mass culture. They are tied to the Present. Faith, coercion, stability. The Frontier Syndicate: A powerful conglomerate with a broad purview, including technology, heavy industry, entertainment, telecommunications, and transportation. Led by Exenceaster March (he/him), the Syndicate betrayed the Pact of Free States and joined the Bilats in order to be part of their colonization efforts on Palisade. The Pact of Free States: One of the two factions vying for leadership of the Principality, a joint operation by Stels Columnar and Apostolos. Led in name by the Glorious Princept, Dahlia (they/them), but operated in day-to-day matters by members of the original Pact of Necessary Venture, including Rye (he/him) and Gallica (she/her). Though they are reformist in some ways, their primary goal is greater autonomy for each Stel, freedom from the legal restraints, taxes, and oversights demanded by the Principality, with additional deregulation to follow downstream. Fabreal Duchy: When the Divine Principality left Palisade nearly 5,000 years ago, they left behind a Duke and his barons as caretakers. In the generations that followed, they ruled as petty tyrants, creating Delegates as their slaves, remaking their bodies into glass and oil, and extending their reach across Palisade's continents. Though they officially report to their handlers in Stel Kesh, recently they have begun to wonder if things were better before the Principality's return to Palisade. Places Diadem Gravtrain: While the vast trench-city on Palisade's equator lays abandoned, Kesh has reactivated its railway via an operations center in the city of Carmathen. Collier: The agricultural world where Thisbe was dug up and eventually sold to mercenaries. A planet that, due to the Farmer's Rebellion, was removed from all Principality maps and effectively abandoned. Became the "breadbasket" of Millennium Break, a farming world to support the revolutionary movement. Divines The Divine Filigree: The instrumentalized operating core of Palisade's extensive GravTrain system. Currently being taken into Dust's catacombs by the affliction's minions. The Divine Motion (she/her): One of the founding members of the Pact, the necromantic Apostolosian divine once led its infamous retinue, the Black Century, on Partizan. They were defeated and dispersed, turned into part of Kalmeria, during Operation Shackled Sun. The Divine, Arbitrage (it/its): The amoral machine turned de facto treasurer keeps the Frontier Syndicate a step ahead in all matters of commerce. Sole minter of “glint,” a newly popular currency on Palisade. The Divine Integrity (it/its): Sometimes appearing as an articulated staff or a metallic spine, Integrity integrates itself into its chosen user. Once the two are connected, Integrity becomes a powerful exoskeleton, and supports its user in matters of military and morale. Until being assassinated by Brnine, Dahlia, the Glorious Princept, was the elect of Integrity. The Divine Resonance (it/its): The watchful guardian, doting caregiver, and ardent supporter of Nideo's colonial efforts on Palisade. Asepsis (it/its): The final living remnants of a Divine who pursues its particular vision of purity at the cost of everything else. Kept, studied, and utilized by Captain Kalvin Brnine. Objects The Broken Spoke: The Figure's bipedal and asymmetrical mech, The Broken Spoke is made of a matte crystaline material that has Russian Sage seemingly sprouting out between its joints. It has stout legs. Its right arm carries a glaive; its left "arm", or what would pass as such, is an oversized cannon with an attached shield. This oversized half of the mech is covered by a flowing cloak. BAC Hatchets: Appearing like fantastical knights made of tooth enamel, the Divine Consecration's latest machine of war, derived from parts recovered from the Divines Felicity and Souciance, buried inside of Chimera's Lantern. The Hatchets wield axes that sport long, weaponized chains running from the bottom of their hafts, and the materials used in their construciton make them sturdier than most front line units. The trio of Hatchets deployed by Stel Nideo to capture the "train brain" are piloted by three brothers: Calamedes, Caspin, and Caydor. Saint: A series of mechs piloted by knights that served the original Crown of Glass, a major power on the pre-Divine Principality-era Twilight Mirage world of Quire. Mysteries Perennial (she/her): The Principality's so-called 'adversary,' who lives at the center of the galaxy and whose chaotic whims spread through her "Perennial Wave," an ever-present nanoparticle that has recently bonded with Kalmeria. The Five Afflictions: A group of “monstrous” beings that haunt the dark corners of Palisade. They have been named as follows: Dust a.k.a Pride's Mirror a.k.a. The Looking Glass Refrain a.k.a. Yesterday's Reprise a.k.a. The Ghastly Chorus Ravel a.k.a. Labyrinth's Thread a.k.a. The Hedge Maze Cleave a.k.a. Whetstone's Opposite a.k.a. The Sanguine Hatchet Oversight a.k.a. Hell's Facade a.k.a. The Empty Garden Flash Nautilus: An alien creature who uses plasma-energy for propulsion. Compelled into service by Stel Nideo. Additional Notes Delegates: In plain terms, Delegates are synthetic individuals created through a process of forcible extraction from a living Divine. Originated by the Fabreal Duchy, who were left behind to "attend to" Palisade by the Divine Principality around 5000 years ago, these Delgates were designed and used as slaves. Currently, a Delegate resistance group called Reunion operates out of the fortress Joyous Guard in the Caldera Stretch. Standing astride the Diadem, the massive Affliction called Dust first sapped sound from the world and then turned its attention to the train car at the center of a multi-factional chase. This episode carries content warnings for state surveillance. The crew of the Blue Channel battles their way towards a train heading east. Inside one of its cars is the Diadem Grav Train control system, a device that could turn the tide of the war on Palisade and grant the Cause a major logistical advantage. In the city of Carmathen, the Fabreal Duchy has spread itself too thin. Look only at the entrance to the Diadem Grav Train's control center: Once guarded by a full detachment of Stel Kesh's most reliable soldiers. Now, guarded by little more than an honor guard. On a world like Palisade, in a war like this one, it may as well be an invitation. The question is only how many might decide to come calling. The Paint Shop: Sitting atop the central peak of Steeple Catterick, this faux-commune was once the central HQ of the Bilateral HQ on Palisade. Now it has gone quiet. Divines The Divine Motion (she/her): One of the founding members of the Pact, the necromantic Apostolosian divine once led its infamous retinue, the Black Century, on Partizan. Objects AdArm Bouquet: Designed by Stel Orion's Adamant Arms and Artifice as an Altar-era update to the classic Troop design. It's still boxy (if a little trimmer) and it retains it's wide, rectangular “eye” on its head. Gone are the heavy grip claws, replaced with traditional, five-fingered hands, allowing it more complex manipulations, including the operations of its distinctive Roundless Rifle, which seems convert raw Perennial Wave into ammunition. Additionally, the shoulder mount has ditched the heavy cannon in exchange for a close range, pneumatic lance that can devastate even the strongest armor. Roundless rifles fire condensed Perennial Wave gathered from the atmosphere itself. The Broken Spoke: The Figure's bipedal and asymmetrical mech, The Broken Spoke is made of a matte crystaline material that has Russian Sage seemingly sprouting out between its joints. It has stout legs. Its right arm carries a glaive; its left "arm", or what would pass as such, is an oversized cannon with an attached shield. This oversized half of the mech is covered by a flowing cloak. The Empty Garden Additional Notes Delegates: In plain terms, Delegates are synthetic individuals created through a process of forcible extraction from a living Divine. It's not about politics, it's about our love for Texas Dancehalls and the legendary Broken Spoke. Honestly we taped this episode in 2022 and I've been waiting to post it because I wanted a companion episode with Congressman Lloyd Doggett. I'ver contacted his office and 8 months later, we're still waiting for an answer. It would be great for Congressman Doggett to tell of his love for the Spoke and of the first time a political rally was held at the Spoke. I can't wait to hear his "tales" of old Austin. Let's set it up and in the mean time I hope you enjoy this conversation with Congressman Roy.
It's now been 2 years since the death of James White. What does the future hold for the historic Broken Spoke. Ginny White-Peacock and Michael Peacock tell Bob and Monte about the Spoke's future.

Why did it take so long for the small, destination winery business to take off. With the benefit of hindsight, it seems like it should have been obvious for decades. No matter how long it took for the American public to realize they loved going to places like this is fine. What matters is that families like that of Maggie Hall, today's guest, have the ability to create sustainable agricultural businesses by giving people what they want. Maggie is the only child of two free spirited and creative lovers of agriculture. Maggie says that to look at them, you wouldn't know how free spirited they are, but her parents have been seeking a way to live and maintain an agricultural lifestyle since before she can remember. For a couple of decades this took the form of a horse farm that included breeding, training, selling and even cart pulling for special events. However, about seven years ago the bottom fell out of the particular horse market they were in, and they made a change to growing grapes and running a destination winery. Today, Maggie is the social media marketing expert for her parents' business, Broken Spoke Winery. On the same farm that used to be primarily devoted to horses they now grow grapes, make wine, host events, provide entertainment and sell locally produced, value added products. Maggie describes their location as the "middle of nowhere" but as it turns out, a lot of people vacation in the area. So, with the assistance of social media, Maggie can target folks in the areas that tend to travel to her part of Maryland and inform them about the events and entertainers that will be appearing at Broken Spoke Winery. In today's interview Maggie will tell us all about the journey, her role and her parent's philosophy on business and agriculture! More Places You Can Listen to Off-Farm Income And Matt Brechwald:

Season 2 Episode 8 A BLAST FROM THE PAST – Songs that Form the Soundtrack of our Teenage Dreams Why do the songs we heard as a teenager sound sweeter than anything we have ever listened to as an adult? In recent years, psychologists and neuroscientists have done plenty of research and have confirmed that these oldies but goodies hold disproportionate power over our emotions. And researchers have uncovered evidence that suggests our brains bind us to the music that we heard as teenagers more tightly than anything we'll ever hear as adults—a connection that doesn't weaken whatsoever as we age. Musical nostalgia, in other words, isn't just a cultural phenomenon: It's a neutronic command. And no matter how sophisticated our tastes might otherwise grow to be, our brains may stay jammed on those songs we obsessed over during the high drama during the years of our adolescence. But memories are meaningless without emotion—and aside from love and drugs, nothing spurs an emotional reaction like music. Many research studies show that our favorite songs stimulate our brain's pleasure circuit, which releases an influx of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and other neurochemicals that make us feel good. A lot of big words, right! The more we like a song, the more we get treated to neurochemical bliss, flooding our brains. Music lights these sparks of neutronic activity in everyone. But when we were young, the sparks turned into a fireworks show. Between the ages of 10 and 22, our brains undergo rapid neurological development—and the music we love during that decade seems to get wired into our lobes for the rest of our lives. When we make neural connections to a song, we also create a strong memory trace that becomes overloaded with heightened emotion, thanks partly to a surplus of youthful growth hormones. These hormones tell our brains that everything is incredibly important—especially the songs that form the soundtrack to our teenage dreams during those early years. 1995 – The Decade of the 90s - KARS for Kids, Dallas Cowboys Inauguration St. Edwards Training Camp, Austin Live Stock Show and Rodeo, Walk of Life on Capitol Steps, Broken Spoke, Sidney St. James and Fiftie's Fun on Sunday Nights at KOOL99 Radio, and many more functions. Today’s guest is Weldon Henson. He might have the best honky tonk voice that Austin can call it’s own. I’d describe it as a mix between Merle Haggard and Ray Benson He plays the honky tonks in and around Austin. In particular, a weekly gig at the Broken Spoke and monthly at Ginny’s. When you hear him talk about his top five records, I believe that it is clear where his influences lie. Moving forward all podcastees of the My Top Five Records podcast will have to now deal with quizzes. They won’t know what I am going to ask them but I assure you that they will have a good time. Weldon did pretty dern good. If you're digging on what we're laying down, please give us a review on iTunes. You can find My Top Five Records pretty much anywhere you listen to podcasts but a star for each one of your top five records on iTunes (that's five stars!) would be super appreciated! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-top-five-records/id1494022573 Let’s get to the conversation. Hoy vamos a recordar aquellos momentos. The Ballad of the Urban Cowboy: America's Search for True Grit". “Times Like These” la representación de Dan Fogelberg. That’s How Rumors Get Started. "Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. Welcome to a record-breaking week when it comes to length. (That's what she said?) You'll have to decide for yourself if it's worth it or not because quite frankly, we're sick of hearing our own voices after editing all this. Nonetheless, join in on the adventure of Charlotte's first brewery, it's first distillery, and the neighborhood who's name we apparently love to hate. And that's just the first half. We follow that up with a preview of eight of the first matchups in our Buzz Bracket. It's a deep dive into key players, offensive strategies, coaching changes, and more. Make sure you're in the know because these breweries will go head-to-head in just one more week.
