Andrew Copson speaks to acclaimed novelist and Humanists UK patron Jane Fallon about the beliefs that have shaped her journey from vegetarianism to veganism, her lifelong love for animals, and her transition from TV producer to the author of 14 bestselling books. What I Believe was the title of two separate essays by the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the philosopher EM Forster in the early 20th century. Anyone else feel in serious need a romcom right now? I know I do. And my guest today has your back. Lindsey Kelk's unashamedly feel good fiction has won her a legion of fans from the queen Marian Keyes and Jane Fallon to Emily Henry and Mhairi McFarlane.Born in Doncaster and now living in LA by way of New York, Lindsey has written 19 novels and sold 2.5million copies. The most recent of which are Love Me Do - a fun gender-flipped Cyrano de Bergerac meets The Holiday - and The Christmas Wish, which turns Christmas Day into Groundhog Day. Sounds more like a horror story than a romcom to me!Self-confessed oversharer and cat lover, Lindsey hung out in my kitchen with Sausage the cat (but of course) to tell me about losing both her mother and grandmother in the space of the year, how she learnt that often what looks like a wall is actually a door and how a Northern girl who grew up in a diet-y household, maintains a semblance of self-esteem in the city of beautiful people. We also discussed Lindsey's gynaecological history FROM HELL (and as regular listeners will know, it takes one to know one), finally finding a partner who's all about a green flag and how she's fully sick of ageism in romcoms. If you loved this episode, you might also like my conversations with Jane Fallon and Marian Keyes.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Love Me Do by Lindsey Kelk and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. This is the second of our special compilation episodes this summer; perfect for you to dip in and out of on your holidays, or to accompany you on any long journeys. This week we're focusing on a topic that comes up a lot on The Mid.Point: relationships. Be they romantic, familial, or purely platonic, they can often take on a new importance when navigating midlife. Like everything, relationships change and evolve over time and sometimes they no longer serve us by the midpoint, hence why many people find themselves navigating the end of a significant partnership or friendship at this time of life. However, scientific research suggests that there are anti-ageing properties bound up in social interactions and a sense of community, so it's vitally important that we keep making friendships throughout our lives. But it can be hard to put yourself out there, especially when it comes to dating. These are all aspects that our wonderful guests - Elizabeth Day, Phil Neville, Rob Rinder, Jane Fallon, Kelly Cates, Kirsty Gallacher, Kenny Logan, sobriety advocate Matt Pink, and Professor Rose Anne Kenny – all touch on in this week's episode. In 2018, two new mothers died weeks apart after giving birth in two Kent hospitals from a herpes infection. Kimberley Sampson and Samantha Mulcahy both had c-sections and contracted herpes before or around the delivery of their babies. That's according to an inquest into their deaths that has just concluded - that their mothers, Nicola Foster and Yvette Sampson, say doesn't give enough answers as to what actually happened. Both Nicola and Yvette joins Nuala to talk about their daughters and what's next in their fight for the truth. Morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina has made history by becoming the first player to wear a hijab at a World Cup. Nuala discusses with Shaista Aziz, co-director of the Three Hijabis, a trio of British Muslim women working to make football free of racism and discrimination. Before becoming a full-time writer, Jane Fallon was a multi-award-winning television producer behind shows such as This Life, Teachers and 20 Things to Do Before You're 30. She has written a dozen best-selling novels including Getting Rid of Matthew and Got You Back, which is being made into a musical with music by Roxette. She joins Nuala to discuss her latest book, Over Sharing, and its themes of influencers, projecting the perfect life on social media, fake profiles, revenge and 'frenemies'. All this week on the programme we're looking at loneliness and in particular loneliness among young women. This is because the stats tell us that young people are the age group most likely to say they are lonely – and women of any age are more likely to say they are lonely than men. Today Nuala is joined by two women who tell us about their experience of loneliness. Beth McColl is 30 and Rachael Devine is 33. The Women's Netball World Cup is underway in Cape Town. It's the first time the competition has been held in Africa - and will see 16 teams battling it out for a place in the final on 6 August. Broadcaster Kath Merry is in South Africa following all the action, and updates Nuala McGovern on the latest news. Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley

We are less than two weeks away from what could be the largest single-employer strike in US history. As of this recording, contract negotiations between United Parcel Services (UPS) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have reportedly "collapsed"—and the clock is ticking until the current contract expires on July 31. If a deal is not reached and a strike occurs, what will it look like for 340,000 Teamster UPSers to walk off the job? What are the key issues that workers are prepared to strike over? And what can we all do to support them, whether a strike occurs or not? The largest private sector labor contract in the US is set to expire at midnight on July 31; as negotiations continue to play out, we will soon see whether or not the 350,000 Teamsters working for United Parcel Services (UPS) will hit the picket line and wage one of the largest strikes in US history. As Sean Orr, a UPS package-car driver and elected shop steward for Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago, and Elliot Lewis, a UPS package-car driver and alternate shop steward for Teamsters Local 804 in New York City, recently wrote in Jacobin, "This contract fight is about two visions of work in the twenty-first century. One is promoted by workers: equal pay for equal work, dignity and autonomy on the job, and a stable work-life balance. The other is promoted by Wall Street: hypersurveillance, low pay, subcontracting, gig work, and 'flexible' scheduling practices that hurt workers and benefit bosses." In this episode, we talk to Sean Orr about growing up in a de-industrializing Milwaukee, his path to becoming a Teamster and working for UPS, why the current contract fight is such a pivotal moment for the Teamsters and the labor movement, and what we can all do to stand in solidarity with all UPS workers.  Additional links/info below... For today's Now You Know, we'll be looking at the British black comedy series After Life, which has been written and directed by Ricky Gervais. The show, streaming on Netflix, sees the comedian play Tony, a journalist trying to grapple with the death of his wife Lisa from cancer. 1. Did you know that James Corden served as an inspiration for one of the characters on the show? Indeed, James the Recorder Kid is based on Corden, who has been a subject of many of Gervais's jokes earlier. 2. Since Ricky Gervais himself is an animal rights defender, the fish fingers that were featured on the show were of the vegan variant. 3. The premiere episode features a disgruntled Tony deciding to offer his dog a can of baked beans after running out of dog food. He himself opts for vegetable curry in a can. In a later Facebook interaction, Gervais revealed that he had indeed consumed the vegetable curry during the filming of the scene.4. The character of Lisa on the show has a middle name, Jane, which also happens to be the name of Gervais' partner of 30 years, Jane Fallon. 5. Ricky Gervais' views on fatherhood are somewhat captured in the character of Tony. The actor-comedian has earlier admitted to being comfortable with not fathering a child. Similarly, Tony, in the series, reveals he isn't keen on having a kid because he feels they are annoying. 6. The music of After Life was handpicked by Gervais himself, a creative decision that he hadn't had before. So when you hear Bill Withers' Lovely Day or Elton John's Rocketman, be assured that Gervais has himself selected these tracks to feature on the show. If you haven't watched this series yet, then do so it's streaming on NetflixThat's the OTTplay Now You Know, I shall be back again with another episode soon. Until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.

This week's case involves a 'power couple' of crime and although Jane wouldn't notice them actually committing a felony, she'd certainly be able to spot them in a line up.
