Pierre Biver of J.C. Biver, Jasper Lifering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, and Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches join me in three separate conversations to provide a holistic overview of stone dials.Over the past few years, stone dials have seemingly popped up everywhere. More modern brands are making them. At the same time, vintage examples have become more collectible and jumped in price considerably. But stone dials are still a relatively undiscovered corner of watch collecting. They're not well understood on the vintage or modern side.So I wanted to cover them on Hodinkee. Typically, we'd do this by talking to a few experts and synthesizing those conversations into an in-depth article. But I decided to try something different this time around, hitting record on three conversations to learn about modern stone dial production, vintage collecting, and everything in between. Our first conversation is with Pierre Biver, who started J.C. Biver with his father Jean-Claude Biver last year. Each of their releases has included a stone dial option. Then, I talk with two dealers. First is Jasper Lijfering of Amsterdam Vintage Watches, a vintage dealer and trained gemologist. Second is Erik Gustafson of Hairspring Watches, who has helped grow the scholarship around stone dials. We dive into the recent discussion around Rolex "obsidian" dials; as we'll discuss, this name isn't quite accurate and it shows how much there still is to learn about vintage watches, and stone dials in particular.I hope all three conversations give you a better understanding of stone dials. Note that I've tried to include links to an example of all stone dials mentioned in the audio, so check the show notes below if you're not sure what a particular stone looks like.Show Notes1:23: Hands-On: The Biver Automatique2:14: Hands-On: The Biver Carillon Tourbillon19:30: Hands-On: The Berneron Mirage Realizes Its Creator's Uncompromising Vision24:00: Hands-On: Baltic Prismic Stone Dial Limited Editions31:54: Amsterdam Vintage Watches33:35: In-Depth: How Piaget Defined The 1970s, And How It Can Do The Same Today38:15: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Malachite dial39:16: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Coral dial41:53: Dr. Helmut Crott's The Dial42:45: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with black Onyx dial43:15: Example of a Piaget Protocole with Lapis Lazuli dial43:28: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Tiger's Eye dial45:20: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Green Jasper dial46:30: Example of a Rolex Day-Date with Pyramid Onyx dial46:55: Jasper's white gold Datejust with Red Jasper dial52:05: Rolex Day-Date with 'Bloodstone' dial54:10: Hairspring Watches56:00: Hairspring's post about the "Obsidian" dial Rolex Datejust58:45: Recapping The Glamorous Day-Date Sale At Phillips (That Time The Average Day-Date Sold For $110,580)1:00:00: "Obsidian" Rolex at Phillips in 20201:02:30: Rolex Day-Date Khanjar with "Obsidian" dial that Loupe This described as "although it looks like an onyx stone dial, after closer inspection it appears the dial is a painted/ lacquer dial."1:11:37: Introducing: Audemars Piguet Brings Back The Starwheel (Live Pics) (including pics of a tropical Starwheel)1:11:58: Rolex Daytona ref. 116500 "Lemon" dial

Jean-Claude Biver is one of the most important individuals in modern watchmaking, a man with a legendary CV and a long legacy. These days, though, it's his own name on the dial, and when Felix had a surprise interview at Dubai Watch Week, it was finding out how Biver senior has transitioned from running mega watch groups to working with a small family business. Of course, when you get the chance to chat with someone who's done it all, you ask the big questions about the future of the watch industry and whether or not it's selfish to put your own name on the dial. But before all this, we get the second instalment of our chat with Zodiac's Mike Pearson and find out why the brand is focussing on its core. This episode is sponsored by Zodiac. Find out about their watches here, or if you're in Australia, check them out online and in person at Time+Tide. Cartier Curious? Join our Discord. Today, Rob and Alon welcome the legendary force of nature that is Jean-Claude Biver to the show. An industry icon, Biver played a pivotal role in the renaissance of the Swiss watch industry following the tumult of the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s. He reinvigorated Blancpain, tripled the profitability of Omega (and managed to strap one onto James Bond's wrist for the first time, made Hublot a household name, and spearheaded TAG Heuer's increasing global visibility, molding it into the powerhouse brand it is today. If you've never heard Biver speak before, you're in for a treat...Time stamps:00:00 The start of the episode (seriously, it's worth listening to the whole thing...)13:00 The delicious cheese of Mr. Biver (it really is delicious)Follow the hosts on Instagram @robnudds and @alonbenjosephThanks to @skillymusic for the theme tune.
This week on the podcast, Zach Kazan joins Blake and Thomas to talk about one of the most unexpected releases of the year: the Norqain Wild One. Zach was in Switzerland for the launch of the Wild One, which employs a proprietary carbon fiber material called Norteq that makes it incredibly lightweight, robust, and can even be colored. Zach shares his thoughts on the watch and the rollout, and talks about the experience of interviewing the one and only Jean-Claude Biver. Later in this episode, the team chats about what it's like to turn on non-watch people to this incredibly niche hobby, and the whether we've successfully created any new enthusiasts through a strong recommendation. Has this ever happened to you? We've made it to episode 16 of A Week in Watches. That's four months! A quarter year! Crazy. Anyway, this week we cover the news from Norqain (including a potential interpretation of how the first conversation between Jean Claude Biver and the board at Norqain went), the return of the Vulcain Cricket (with a debate on what sound crickets really make), some new Farers, and a perpetual monopusher chronograph from Habring2 that has a very tangential relationship with medieval dancing plague. Yeah, it was quite a good week in watch news, so check that out below. This week's sponsor is the Windup Watch Shop, where you can find watches from over 20 brands from Seiko to Oris. Game, set and Matt. Today's guest is Matt Ebden, one of Australia's best tennis pros, and we speak to him fresh from the 2022 Australian Open, where he and Max Purcell made it to the men's doubles final. Beyond his obvious on-court skills, anyone checking out Ebden's Instagram will notice he's a pretty keen watch enthusiast as well, so it's no surprise that he's got Bremont on board as a sponsor. We chat about the many links between pro athletes and fine timepieces, brand endorsements and connected watches on the court. Before they chat to Matt, Andy and Felix ponder what a watch with Jean-Claude Biver's name on the dial would look like. Images: Australian Open This week's episode is sponsored by Artem Straps. Watchmaking legend Jean-Claude Biver, the wizard and mastermind behind the success of brands like Blancpain, Omega, and Hublot, joins this episode of The Accutron Show. Together with our hosts, Jean-Claude revisits key moments of his career and reveals how to give life to the soul of a watch. In a world dominated by rationality and technology, Jean-Claude Biver underlines the importance of dreams, spirituality, and love to make a difference in the luxury industry and in life. Tune into the journey with us.Episode Highlights11:00 I have always tried to put a soul into a product. Soul cannot come from a machine. The only way to infuse a soul into a product is through your hands, through your fingers and only human beings can give birth to something that has a soul. This also connects more with the person that wears the watch, it reminds us to dream. 33:28 A few times, I would take my people at night to the village cemetery, to visit the hundreds of people that have dedicated their love, their passion, and parts of their life to the brand. Love leaves a trace, love never disappears. 39:00 If God gave me the chance to have a second life, I would accept only if he gave me 100% the same life that I have lived. Otherwise, I would not accept the offer. In this episode George is joined by Jean-Claude Biver, former President of the LVMH Watch Division as they discuss the Hublot Big Bang Unico Blue Sapphire.
Dr. Telmo Pievani is a full professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Padua, located in northeast Italy. Telmo is a widely acclaimed expert in biodiversity, with an extensive track record of research and publishing on the topic. He also is a frequent guest at international conferences, including speaking at a number of TED Talks. The topic of today's episode is biodiversity – the building block of every creature, every plant, and every substance on this planet. It is the foundation of all existence. While we have touched on the concept of biodiversity in previous episodes of Voices of Nature – such as with Michele Sofisti and Jean Claude Biver – the conversation with Telmo will be an in-depth examination of biodiversity.
It has been written, “You never quite know what’s going to happen around Biver.” And that is how we treated this podcast. Prior to recording the episode, Jean Claude asked that he be allowed to speak with emotion, passion, and from the heart. At his request, there are no scripted questions – except for the last two I ask every guest. Jean Claude’s words give the listener hope for a better future - one where nature is treated as an asset to be loved and nurtured - and why he believes the younger generations will reverse so many of the problems society has imposed on nature. Jean Claude explains why he loves nature and he talks about how all of us will be happier and live healthier, more enjoyable lives if we too can find ways to express love for nature.
There was an interesting brand article written in the New York Times about watch brand ambassadors and if they still sell watches for watch manufacturers. There are multiple view points on whether or not brand ambassadors and sponsorships really work. Different companies use them in different ways. Jean-Claude Biver and Tag Heuer’s use of ambassadors differs greatly from Rolex, Breitling and A. Lange & Söhne. Here are our thoughts on how sponsorships, or lack thereof, are like today. You can find us on our Website, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook Want to be part of the Launch of our clothing line? Cadel Evans is the greatest Australian cyclist of all time, a four-time Olympian and Tour de France winner, who is a passionate ambassador for the sport. He’s also a watch collector. Cadel Evan’s interest in watches started at a young age when he ‘just wanted a watch that was waterproof’. That interest exploded when, as a professional cyclist, he found himself based in Neuchâtel. But Evans wasn’t spending his time looking in boutique windows; he was busy riding up and down hills and training for the Tour de France, a race he won in 2011, the first Australian, and one of only three non-Europeans to earn the yellow jersey. To celebrate this win, Jean-Claude Biver gifted him a unique yellow Hublot, a watch which has a place of pride in his collection, sitting alongside Patek Phillipe, Panerai and more than a few Rolex models. We talk to Evans about why time is more important than distance in training, his take on the 2020 Tour de France, and what he thinks about wearing Richard Mille while racing. Regardless of whether or not you’re into cycling, you’re into a for a ride in our chat with Cadel Evans. This episode is made possible by our sponsor, eBay. The sports industry faultlines exposed by COVID-19 | Brand purpose in times of crisis | Jean-Claude Biver on passion, emotion, and status. Episode 73 of the Leaders Sport Business Podcast sees James Emmett and David Cushnan talk to Kate Bosomworth about the COVID-19 crisis and its ramifications on sport before introducing a recording of Kate's session with Hublot Chairman Jean-Claude Biver from the Leaders Sport Business Summit in October (session starts at 26:42). Kate, a former Sport England board member, sports marketing agency CEO, and CMO of M&C Saatchi, helmed a typically energetic discussion with Biver, a legend in the luxury brands world and the man credited with transforming the fortunes of Tag Heuer and Hublot through a savvy and committed marketing strategy. The discussion roamed fluidly from piercing business and marketing advice, to approaches to interpersonal skills and instinct, by way of colourful anecdotes about Diego Maradona. On the conversational agenda: - Biver's first job as a charismatic but useless watch salesman; - The point of passion at work; - Why you don't buy a watch to tell the time; - Why Diego Maradona always wears two watches; - Sports marketing and the power of emotional connection.
