The Anthem Companion to Karl Jaspers (Anthem Press, 2025) edited by Hans Joas and Matthias Bormuth is a collection of articles by an international group of leading experts has its special focus on the relevance of Karl Jaspers's philosophy for the social sciences. It also includes classical evaluations of Jaspers's thinking by renowned authors Talcott Parsons and Jürgen Habermas. Several chapters are devoted to the relationship between Jaspers and his teacher (Max Weber), his famous student (Hannah Arendt) and crucial figures in his intellectual world (Wilhelm Dilthey, Georg Simmel). Others deal with his relevance for disciplines from psychiatry to the study of religion and the historico-sociological research about the Axial Age, a term coined by Jaspers. In his introduction, editor Hans Joas tries to systematise Jaspers's relevance for the contemporary social sciences and to explain why Parsons had called him a ‘social scientist's philosopher'. Nous allons découvrir la faiblesse de Joas et en tirer des leçons pour notre quotidien. Avec Dieu, nous pouvons guérir notre passé. Ne nous contentons pas de victoires partielles.  Dieu désire nous voir régner sur la terre.  

Hoe wordt in het Nieuwe Testament de relatie tussen de discipoelen van Jezus en het Rabbijnse Jodendom en Israel beschouwd? Om te beginnen: hoe maakt Mattheus dat duidelijk in het geslachtsregister waarmee zijn evangelie het verhaal van Jezus de Koning inleidt?Hoe wordt in het Nieuwe Testament de relatie tussen de discipelen van Jezus en het Rabbijnse Jodendom en Israel beschouwd? Om te beginnen: hoe maakt Mattheus dat duidelijk in het geslachtsregister waarmee zijn evangelie het verhaal van Jezus de Koning inleidt? De bedoeling van die geslachtsregisters is meestal om een held te eren, een grote menselijke figuur. Dit doen ze niet alleen door te vertellen wat deze helden allemaal gedaan en gewild hebben, maar ook door legitimiteit te geven aan wie ze zijn en wat ze gedaan hebben, door het verleden erbij te betrekken. Het is een beetje alsof je aan iemand die je net hebt ontmoet vraagt wie zijn ouders en grootouders waren. Meestal stopt het daar bij ons, we praten niet vaak over overgrootouders enzovoort.Het verhaal over Jezus dat Matthäus gaat vertellen, moet dus beginnen met zo'n genealogie, zo'n geslachtsregister. Het gaat erom waar deze Jezus vandaan komt; dat geeft legitimiteit aan zijn bestaan. Dit zie je ook in de Romeinse literatuur, zoals in het heldenverhaal over Aeneas, dat ook een geslachtsregister bevat. Bij de troonsbestijging van de Romeinse keizer werd ook verteld waar hij vandaan kwam, met twee elementen: het noemen van zijn voorgeslacht en de bijzondere omstandigheden van zijn geboorte.Bij Matthäus begint dit vanaf vers 18 en loopt door tot hoofdstuk 4 vers 11. Dit omvat ook de verzoeking in de woestijn en alles wat hij vertelt over Johannes de Doper. Dit hoort allemaal bij de introductie van Jezus, vanaf zijn voorgeslacht tot en met zijn voorbereiding voor zijn dienst, die in hoofdstuk 4 vers 12 begint met de proclamatie van het koninkrijk. Degene die dat koninkrijk gaat verkondigen, wie is dat dan?Matthäus doet dit door een kunstig opgezet geslachtsregister te geven, duidelijk verdeeld in drie delen. Eerst hebben we het patriarchaat: Abraham, zoon van David, zoon van Abraham; dan van Abraham naar Isaac, Jacob, Juda, Tamer, Peres, Hezeron enzovoort. Zo gaan we richting David; bij David begint natuurlijk het gedeelte over het koningschap. Een belangrijke breuk in de geschiedenis van Israël is de ballingschap. In vers 11 vinden we: Jozef verwekte Jechonja en zijn broers ten tijde van de wegvoering naar Babel. Na de wegvoering naar Babel verwekte Jechonja etc. Dus weer een zevental.De opzet is duidelijk: het geslachtsregister is vooral een soort samenvatting van de geschiedenis van Israël. Jezus, de Christus, geboren uit Maria in vers 16, is voortgebracht door de geschiedenis van Israël. Jezus is de erfgenaam van alles wat God met Israël heeft willen doen en dat maakt hem tot de perfecte koning. Hij komt voort uit Abram die geroepen is uit Ur der Chaldeeën en tot zegen zou zijn voor alle volkeren.Die volkeren zijn in dat geslachtsregister ook duidelijk aanwezig. Tamar kan een Aramese of Kanaanietische zijn (Genesis 38), Rachab is duidelijk een Kanaanietische (Richteren 2-6), Ruth is een Moabitische, en Bathseba was getrouwd met Uria, een Hethiet (2 Samuël 11). Deze vrouwen suggereren dat niet-Joden een plaats hebben in de voorgeschiedenis van de koning van Israël en daarmee ook in de gemeenschap die hij stichtte. De zonden die hier aan bod komen, worden niet als heel belangrijk gezien.Wat wel belangrijk is, is dat er een connectie is ontstaan tussen deze mensen en de geschiedenis van Israël zoals God die bedoeld heeft. God heeft niet-Joden al verwerkt in deze geschiedenis vanwege Abraham's zegen dat alle geslachten van de aarde gezegend zouden worden door hem.Er wordt vaak gedacht dat na Israël een nieuwe gemeenschap ontstaat waarin Joods-zijn geen rol meer speelt. Maar dit idee moeten we laten varen; volgens Matthäus blijft Israël belangrijk.Het schema draait om het getal veertien: dalet (4), waw (6), dalet (4) vormen samen veertien in gematria (getallensymboliek). Veertien staat voor compleetheid of zelfs meer dan compleetheid. Om dit aantal te bereiken slaat Matthäus enkele koningen over: Achazja, Joas, Amazia, Jehoahaz en Jojakim worden niet genoemd.Er ontbreekt één naam na de ballingschap want er worden er maar 13 genoemd; sommigen denken dat dit Christus zelf of zijn terugkeer suggereert. But ExxonMobil had other plans, being the operator of this field, has experienced what it sees as a "First Of Right of Refusal" to Guyana and has petitioned to international courts to block this deal until ExxonMobil decides whether or not to "bid" on this 30% stake.Episode 7 of the Deal Spotlight felt like the perfect place to discuss the details surrounding this potential merger, and I was lucky to be able to get Bennett Williams to join me for this discussion. Bennett has spent his entire career working in the M&A space and having worked within Chevron doing corporate offshore development, brings a unique insight into this merger mess. He spent the first half of the show helping educate me on the ins and outs of offshore development, dealing with governments, and understanding how these JOAs are structured. Leuk dat je samen met mij in de Bijbel wilt lezen.We zijn bezig met een korte thema-serie over Bijbelse verhalen. De meesten van ons zijn wel bekend met één of meer verhalen uit de Bijbel. Zeker als je een christelijke opvoeding hebt gehad of naar een christelijke school ging. Dat heeft zowel een voor- als een nadeel. Het voordeel is dat je bekend bent met de Bijbel, maar het nadeel kan zijn dat je overbekend bent met de Bijbel. Oftewel: je kent de Bijbel te goed om het nog tot je te laten doordringen. Een ander risico is dat je alleen de kinderbijbelversie van een verhaal kent. Neem het verhaal van de profeet Jona. Hij werd geroepen om Nineve te gaan en de mensen daar op te roepen zich te bekeren van hun zondige wegen. Hij was koppig en ging juist de tegenovergestelde kant op. Hij probeerde te vluchten van God met de boot en werd vervolgens opgeslokt door een vis. Na drie dagen nadenken in de buik van de vis besloot hij toch maar om gehoor te geven aan Gods opdracht. Hij ging naar Nineve en de mensen bekeerden zich na het horen van zijn boodschap. Jona was daar boos over. Kinderbijbel of echte Bijbel? Dat is in het kort de kinderbijbelversie. Ik heb niets tegen het lezen van kinderbijbels. Sterker nog, als je de echte Bijbel lastig vindt, lees dan vooral een kinderbijbel! Maar het echte verhaal gaat veel dieper. Het is opvallend dat Gods woordvoerder zich tegen God keert. Hij zou toch moeten weten dat je gehoorzaam moet zijn? Aan de andere kant, als je beseft dat Nineve de hoofdstad was van Assyrië en dat Assyrië een volk was dat andere volken terroriseerde, begrijp je het misschien weer wat beter. Het is hetzelfde als dat wij nu naar Teheran in Iran, naar Mekka in Saoedi Arabië of naar Pyongyang in Noord-Korea zouden gaan om daar openlijk te vertellen dat iedereen zijn leven aan Jezus moet geven. En de drie dagen die Jona doorbracht in de buik van de vis verwijzen weer naar de drie dagen die Jezus doorbracht in het graf. Kortom, Bijbelse verhalen bevatten veel meer diepgang dan je bij een eerste lezing beseft. Terug naar het plot Door de manier waarop de Bijbel verhalen optekent, krijgen wij het gevoel dat we te maken hebben met sprookjes. Dat zijn verhalen die misschien wel een kern van waarheid bevatten maar ze zijn niet echt gebeurd en je kunt ze ook negeren, want de werkelijkheid is veel complexer dan in de Bijbel. Als je zo denkt, dan begrijp ik dat. Maar ik weet ook wat het probleem is. Je weet niet goed hoe je een verhaal in de Bijbel moet lezen. Daar hoop ik je met deze thema-serie over Bijbelse verhalen mee te helpen. Als je hier verdieping bij zoekt, lees dan vooral mijn boek ‘Ik leer je de Bijbel lezen'. Je kunt hier meer over vinden op bijbellezenmetjan.nl/boeken. In de vorige aflevering van de podcast hadden we het over het plot van Bijbelse verhalen: • Wat gebeurt er in het verhaal? Hoe wordt het verteld? • Hoe past dit verhaal binnen het gedeelte van de Bijbel dat je aan het lezen bent? • Waar zit dit verhaal op de tijdlijn van de Bijbel? Als je naar het plot van het verhaal kijkt dan zoom je dus eerst in en vervolgens zoom je uit. We gaan dit straks nog een keer doen. Maar eerst wil ik het met je hebben over het andere belangrijke onderdeel van Bijbelse verhalen: personages. Personages zijn de mensen die in het verhaal voorkomen, al kunnen soms ook dieren een personage zijn. God is eveneens een personage in de Bijbel. Daar komen we straks op terug. Personages als brug tussen ons en de Bijbel Laten we ons eerst richten op menselijk personages. Heb je je wel eens afgevraagd waarom God ons een boek heeft gegeven dat voor het overgrote deel uit verhalen bestaat? Onze wereld is radicaal anders dan de wereld in de tijd van de Bijbel. Was het niet handiger geweest als God ons gewoon een samenvatting had gegeven met de belangrijkste regels? Nee, want God wil een relatie met ons. En hoe bouw je een relatie? Door elkaar te ontmoeten, samen te praten en samen dingen te beleven. Maar onze tijd op aarde is zo kort. Wij kunnen nooit alles beleven wat God ons mee wil geven. Daarom heeft Hij ons de Bijbel gegeven. Zodat we Hem kunnen leren kennen. Niet alleen door onze eigen ervaring en onze eigen gesprekken met God, maar ook door te zien wat God in het verleden heeft gedaan en heeft besproken met andere mensen. De verhalen zijn essentieel, omdat daarin mensen voorkomen die net als jij en ik met God te maken hadden. Ze leefden in een andere tijd en cultuur, maar ze waren net zo menselijk als jij en ik. Ze hadden dezelfde behoeften, dezelfde zorgen en dezelfde vreugden als wij. Ze stonden ook voor dezelfde keuzes. Wij vragen ons af: hoe maken we de Bijbel relevant voor ons leven? Dat is eigenlijk heel simpel. Verplaats je zelf in de Bijbel. Hoe doe je dat? Vooral door te kijken naar de Bijbelse verhalen en je te identificeren met de mensen daarin. Die Bijbelse figuren zijn de brug tussen onze wereld en de wereld van de Bijbel. Laten we aan de hand van een Bijbels verhaal eens kijken hoe dit werkt. Ken je het verhaal van Gideon? Gideon was een rechter van Israël in de periode nadat Israël begonnen was met het innemen van het beloofde land. Een rechter is in dit geval niet iemand die criminelen veroordeelt, maar iemand die het volk leidt. Hij was geen koning, maar wel een militaire leider die door God werd gebruikt om Israël te beschermen of te bevrijden van zijn vijanden. In de kinderbijbelversie is Gideon de man die zeker wilde weten dat God met hem sprak. Hij vroeg God om een teken. Hij zou 's nachts een kleed in het gras leggen en als God echt met hem had gesproken dan zou de volgende ochtend het kleed nat zijn, maar het gras erom heen niet. Dit gebeurde ook. De volgende nacht vroeg hij opnieuw om een teken. Dit keer zou de grond nat moeten zijn en het kleed niet. Opnieuw luisterde God en Gideon was ervan overtuigd dat God hem daadwerkelijk riep om de vijand te verslaan. Eerst trok hij op met een groot leger, maar uiteindelijk dunde God het aantal manschappen uit tot slechts 300. Met dit kleine aantal wist hij de vijand te verslaan, omdat God verwarring onder hen stichtte. Wat kunnen wij hiervan leren? Dat je God om een teken moet vragen als je het niet zeker weet en dat als je op God vertrouwt Hij grote dingen zal doen. Maar is dit het volledige verhaal? We gaan zo het verhaal van Gideon doornemen, maar laat me je drie handvatten geven om een Bijbels personage te doorgronden. 1. Kijk als eerste naar de naam en zoek op wat deze betekent. Een naam van een personage zegt vaak veel over de rol van die persoon in de Bijbel. De naam ‘Abraham' bijvoorbeeld betekent ‘Verheven Vader' of ‘Vader van een menigte'. Abraham is de stamvader van vele volken, waaronder Israël. Gideon betekent de ‘veller' of de ‘vernietiger'. Zijn rol in de Bijbel is dat hij de vijanden van Israël verslaat, maar ook dat hij afgoden vernietigt. 2. Kijk naar wat er gebeurt in het verhaal (het plot dus) en dan naar hoe het personage hierop reageert. Ik heb zelf enkele romans geschreven en in een roman schrijf je eigenlijk nooit hoe iemand is. Je laat het de lezer zelf ontdekken. Het personage onthult zijn of haar karakter door de keuzes die worden gemaakt. Offert iemand zichzelf op of kiest hij voor zijn eigen hachje? 3. Als derde: wat zegt iemand en komt dat overeen met zijn daden? Koning David bijvoorbeeld lijkt zijn vijanden te vergeven, maar op zijn sterfbed vertelt hij zijn zoon Salomo wie hij zo snel mogelijk om het leven moet laten brengen. Jozef daarentegen laat zijn broers in leven, ook nadat zijn vader Jakob is overleden. Jozef lijkt dus meer integriteit te hebben dan David. Wie is Gideon? Maar goed, laten we Gideon als voorbeeld gebruiken. Zijn verhaal in de Bijbel begint nadat God via een profeet heeft laten weten dat het volk geen vrede kent omdat het zich niet aan Gods wet houdt. Dan volgt dit stuk: Toen kwam de engel van de HEER en Hij nam plaats onder de terebint bij Ofra, op het land van Joas, een afstammeling van Abiëzer. Joas' zoon Gideon was juist bezig tarwe te dorsen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat de Midjanieten de tarwe niet zouden zien, deed hij dat in de wijnpers. De engel van de HEER vertoonde zich aan hem en zei: ‘De HEER zij met je, dappere krijgsman.' ‘Mag ik U vragen,' antwoordde Gideon, ‘als de HEER ons werkelijk bijstaat, waarom overkomt dit ons dan allemaal? Waar blijft Hij dan met zijn wonderbaarlijke daden, waarover onze voorouders hebben verteld? Uit Egypte heeft Hij ze geleid, zeiden ze toch? Maar nu heeft Hij ons in de steek gelaten en uitgeleverd aan de Midjanieten!' Toen wendde de HEER zich tot Gideon en zei: ‘Toon je moed en bevrijd Israël, dat is mijn opdracht.' ‘Mag ik U vragen,' antwoordde Gideon, ‘hoe zou ik Israël kunnen bevrijden? Mijn familie heeft in onze stam, Manasse, niets in te brengen, en ikzelf ben de jongste van de familie.' De HEER antwoordde: ‘Dat kun je omdat Ik je bijsta. Pero ahora la derrotarás solo tres veces.Este capítulo nos describe un evento muy emotivo. El profeta Eliseo está cerca de sus últimos días y el rey Joas fue desesperadamente a consultarlo. El pueblo estaba siendo amenazado por los enemigos y el rey se humilló pidiendo la bendición de Dios. En ese momento Dios le da una profecía de victoria que vencería a los enemigos. Pero después vemos un acto muy curioso. El profeta le ordenó dar golpes con flechas en sus manos y el rey dio solo 3. Esto enojó al profeta que le reprendió por no haber sido mas agresivo, mas aventado, debía haber golpeado unas 5 o 6 veces, pues cada golpe a las flechas era un golpe a los enemigos. Jesucristo dijo que el reino de los cielos sufre violencia, y que los violentos lo arrebatan. No tengas temor en dar pasos de fe que antes no habías dado. Aunque se burlen de ti o te critiquen, sigue adelante. Aunque te digan que eres un santurrón o una santita, sigue honrando a Dios con tu vida y practicando más la oración, la lectura de la biblia y el ayuno cuando tu alma anhele más de Dios, cuando necesites la dirección divina del Señor en alguna circunstancia en tu vida. salir de esa zona de confort, dejar esa actitud de no incomodar a otros entonces por eso no avanzo, ese temor o recato espiritual. Irrumpe el ambiente espiritual con tu oración llena de pasión y entrega, levanta tu voz al cielo y exalta al Señor como nunca, atrévete a creer y a ver la obra de Dios manifiesta en tu vida. Comienza a creer que si existen los milagros.En el siguiente capítulo podemos ver como la decadencia espiritual de Israel era preocupante. Leamos unos versos de este capítulo:2 Reyes 1423 En el año quince de Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar en Samaria Jeroboam hijo de Joás, rey de Israel, y reinó cuarenta y un años.24 Él hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y no se apartó de todos los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, quien hizo pecar a Israel.25 Él restauró las fronteras de Israel, desde Lebo-hamat hasta el mar del Arabá, conforme a la palabra que el SEÑOR Dios de Israel había hablado por medio de su siervo, el profeta Jonás hijo de Amitai, de Gat-jefer. 26 Porque el SEÑOR vio la aflicción de Israel que era muy amarga, y que no había nadie ni esclavo ni libre que diera ayuda a Israel. 27 El SEÑOR no había determinado borrar el nombre de Israel de debajo del cielo; por eso los libró por medio de Jeroboam hijo de Joás.A pesar de los malos reyes que se levantaban para gobernar, Dios también levantaba profetas que daban esa voz de alerta para que el pueblo se arrepintiera. Uno de ellos que aparece aquí es Jonás, el mismo que estuvo unos días en el vientre del pez. Más adelante puedes leer el libro que lleva su nombre. Pero notemos que aquí podemos leer que Dios veía la aflicción del pueblo y todavía los cuidaba y los protegía. Una vez más, vemos que la misericordia, la compasión de Dios es muy grande!Para concluir, en el siguiente capítulo veremos que los reyes de Judá eran un poco más temerosos de Dios. El rey Jotam fue uno de ellos que trataba de ser fiel a Dios pero no lo hizo como David. Leamos una porción del capítulo.2 Reyes 1532 En el segundo año de Pécaj hijo de Remalías, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Jotam hijo de Azarías, rey de Judá. 33 Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó dieciséis años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Jerusa hija de Sadoc.34 Él hizo lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, conforme a todas las cosas que había hecho su padre Azarías. 35 Sin embargo, los lugares altos no fueron quitados, y el pueblo aún ofrecía sacrificios y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos.Él edificó la puerta superior de la casa del SEÑOR.Este rey estaba rodeado de reyes paganos, y el rey de Israel que debía ser un aliado, este era otro rey malvado que no era de ayuda para Jotam sino más bien lo provoca para pelear. La mayor lección de hoy es que no vivamos vidas promedio, en la mitad, como en el limbo, en un área gris. No, sino que cada esfuerzo que hagamos sea para tocar la presencia de Dios y que los que nos rodean no tengan dudas de que adoramos y servimos a un Dios vivo y grande. Ella lo hizo para tomar el poder y reinar con mano dura y derramando sangre inocente. De forma milagrosa, la hija del rey Ocozías esconde a uno de sus hermanitos en el templo donde el sacerdote Joyada los protege arriesgando su vida. Y cuando ha cumplido la edad mínima para ser rey, Joas es entronizado de forma magnífica, en un evento lleno de drama suspenso y acción! La reina es derrotada y eliminada, para que comenzara una renovación en el liderazgo de Judá y un restauración espiritual en el pueblo. En tiempos de oscuridad y libertinaje como los que estamos viviendo hoy en día, podemos inspirarnos en este gran sacerdote, en esta jovencita y en el grupo de guerreros que estuvieron del lado de la justicia y la verdad, que no se dejaron amedrentar por la maldad y amenazas de la reina, y que cumplieron el juicio de Dios. Esta reina simboliza el poder e influencia que el espíritu de maldad tiene sobre esta sociedad, y el sacerdote Joiada representa al pueblo de Dios a ese valiente que se levanta con sabiduría y al tiempo preciso para salvar al inocente y al desvalido, para proteger el remanente de la siguiente generación que debe ser nutrida y cuidada para que puedan cumplir el propósito de Dios en sus vidas. Usa tu influencia, posición y sabiduría para hacer un plan de contraataque, para luchar y resistir las corrientes de este mundo que quieren destruir lo hermoso y divino que proviene de Dios.En el siguiente capítulo podemos ver un ejemplo de lo fácil que es caer en esa condición de negligencia. Después de que el rey Joas crece y quiere honrar a Dios restaurando el templo de Dios que había sido descuidado y profanado con imágenes de Baal y Asera, el rey mandó a que los levitas y sacerdotes, los líderes espirituales de la nación, comenzaran la ardua obra de restauración. Pero de forma increíble y vergonzosa, los sacerdotes no fueron buenos administradores de esta obra, por lo tanto, el rey tuvo que intervenir haciendo el reclamo a los líderes y cambió de administradores de la obra, dejando este trabajo a los restauradores para que ellos mismos sean los que administran los recursos y así terminaran la obra. Leamos una parte de este capítulo:2 Reyes 12:4 Entonces Joás dijo a los sacerdotes:—Todo el dinero de las cosas consagradas que se trae a la casa del SEÑOR, tanto el dinero estipulado a cada hombre (el dinero del rescate de las personas) como todo el dinero que cada uno traiga voluntariamente a la casa del SEÑOR, 5 tómenlo para sí los sacerdotes, cada uno de parte de su administrador, y reparen ellos las grietas del templo donde estas se encuentren.6 Pero sucedió que hasta el año veintitrés del rey Joás, los sacerdotes aún no habían reparado las grietas del templo. 7 Entonces el rey Joás llamó al sacerdote Joyada y a los demás sacerdotes, y les dijo:—¿Por qué no reparan las grietas del templo? Ahora pues, no tomen el dinero de sus administradores, sino denlo para reparar las grietas del templo.Qué les parece? Esto hizo que se retrasara la restauración del templo y la utilización de este para la adoración a Dios. Esto realmente fue vergonzoso verlo. Espero que podamos aprender de esto para no caer en el mismo error. Así como Judá pasó de ser un pueblo oprimido a liberado, terminó siendo un pueblo negligente, disfrutando de la paz que gozaban en el momento y descuidaron la casa de Dios, símbolo del estado de la vida espiritual de la nación. Tanto la opresión como la abundancia de tranquilidad impiden que Dios pueda bendecir más a su pueblo.
