I'm joined by brilliant comedy writer and friend Jenny Jaffe as we look at the TV Tropes page for "Black Fish." Many people would say that a documentary about an abused killer whale who murdered his trainers doesn't need to be analyzed as though it were a Marvel movie, and yet... here we are. We learn about the cinematic universe of Black Fish, speculate about the inevitable action-packed sequel, and spend way too long trying to understand what it means when a story "undergoes Cerberus Syndrome cauing a character to lose their Joker Immunity."
Jenny Jaffe (Rugrats reboot!, Monster High reboot!) joins Jordan and Jesse for a discussion of how Jordan is still haunted by a poster he saw in The Little Things, the hardbound "first edition" of The Illiad the student gives Jennifer Lopez in The Boy Next Door, and the true makeup of Wario sauce. Plus, Jordan quizzes the hell out of Jenny and Jesse.
Happy New Year to all our listeners! We're taking a break from dead pilots this month to do something fun and different! At the beginning of the pandemic Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series), asked the Twitter-verse to send her the names of fake TV shows that she could write the cold opens for. It was an incredible writing exercise and Jenny ended up writing over 60 cold opens!! We've selected 19 of them to read for you. They’re all tonally different and jump from genre to genre. They’re silly and outrageous and we recorded them all with a great group of actors including: Kathleen Rose Perkins (Episodes), Maria Blasucci (Drunk History), Langston Kerman (The Boys, Insecure), Ashleigh Hairston (The Neighborhood), Oscar Montoya (Bless The Harts), and Andrew Reich with stage directions. In Andrew’s interview, Jenny goes in depth about her day to day writing process, and what a creatively freeing exercise this was. It’s a great listen if you’re trying to kick off 2021 inspired to create! Enjoy it!For more Dead Pilots Society episodes and information about our live shows, please subscribe to the podcast!Make sure to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and Twitter, and visit our website at deadpilotssociety.com

Mysteries will be solved and species saved on this episode of Go Fact Yourself! Jenny Jaffe is a comedy writer who grew up with an obsession for 90’s Nickelodeon animated shows. Her career has now come full circle: she’s landed a gig to writing for the upcoming version of "Rugrats!" She’ll tell us about that and some of her other obsessions that haven’t been a part of her work.. yet. Jenny will take on actor/writer Jim Rash. Jim is a pretty accomplished guy. He’s known for his role as Dean Craig Pelton on NBC’s "Community." He’s also won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film The Descendants. But in spite of his success, he’s still not above searching for some quality advice on Instagram… even if he has trouble following it. You can hear Jim now as the voice of Gyro Gearloose on the new version "DuckTales." This week’s trivia topics include moisturizing, basket weaving and cuddly critters. The comedic writer/performer and mental health advocate who started www.projecturok.org shares about the tremendous support she received from her family when depression anxiety and OCD had her close to suicide by age 10, and even more despondent from 15-17. Her story is a great example of parental support, the power of coping skills, and proof that even people from safe supportive homes with no trauma in their lives can suffer from mental illness because the issue is often one of chemical imbalance. When it comes to struggles with depression, everyone’s story is different. But a lot of the time, the stories can be pretty similar.
