A career spanning 50 years, singer-songwriter, actress, recording artist, Grammy award-winning MELISSA MANCHESTER has multiple albums and counting. She has recently released her 25th album, Re:View for which she has re-recorded several of her charted hits. Melissa credits the stage for helping her grow and evolve as an artist and believes her songs have become reflections of that growth. She tells us that through the pandemic, she found herself in a deeply thoughtful space and used it to reflect on her music. Manchester's hit song, Don't Cry Out Loud, is, she says, a reflection of her own experiences. The song speaks of a girl who is an awful lot like her, who is trying to hide her tears, and who is trying to find joy and strength in the face of sadness. Melissa Manchester is an independent musician who has been creating music for five decades. Her songs reflect the current events and social issues going on in the world, such as the importance of frontline workers and the impact of the presidential election. Manchester believes in the power of music and how it can be used to evoke emotion, inspire, and create meaningful conversations. She also believes that music has a mystical quality and can be used to tell stories and connect people in a unique way. In this episode, Melissa talks about how she undertook a six month song writing course with Simon and Garfunkel's Paul Simon while attending New York University. She speaks about her early life in a musical family and how she was always destined to become a songwriter and performer. Melissa Manchester is a wonderfully energetic artist with roots firmly planted in music. Her unique experience growing up with a musician father in the Metropolitan Opera and a mother in the fashion industry fostered her love for music and it grew and developed as she began her career singing jingles for commercials. This was a road that took her alongside musicians like BARRY MANILOW. In 1980, Manchester became the first singer to have two movie themes nominated for Academy Awards (Ice Castles and The Promise); two years later she achieved her highest Billboard singles chart placement with the number five hit "You Should Hear How She Talks About You," which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance. She also created a group called The Harlettes singing backup for Bette Midler. During our chat Melissa speaks glowingly about her friend BETTE MIDLER. Melissa's songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack and Kenny Loggins, to name a few. Her writing partnership with CAROLE BAYER-SAGER is legendary. She has composed music for the animated features The Great Mouse Detective and Lady And The Tramp II, the sequel to the Disney classic. In addition to composing the scores for the theatrical musicals I Sent A Letter To My Love and Sweet Potato Queens, MELISSA also co-wrote the radio mainstays “Midnight Blue”, “Come In From The Rain” and “Whenever I Call You Friend.” Melissa celebrated her tenure as Artist In Residence at Citrus College with the release of her 21st album, The Fellas, a tribute to the iconic male singers who set the platinum standard for pop music. In November 2021, Melissa was inducted into the Great American Songbook Foundation's Hall of Fame and in December 2021, she had the pleasure of saluting her longtime colleague, Bette Midler, on The Kennedy Center Honors awards telecast. Melissa's 25th album, RE:VIEW is a celebration of her fifty-year career, features fresh takes on several of her nineteen Billboard-charted classic hits. A career sprinkled with creative endeavours, a Grammy win and several Academy award nominations, please join us as Melissa shares her incredible journey this week. In this episode, co-host Jennifer and guest co-host Allison discuss the life and work of American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, one of the nation's most revered authors. They are joined by writer and magician Dale Salwak, author of the recent book The Life of the Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne, the first major Hawthorne biography to be published in two decades, featuring original scholarship on both unpublished and published sources. About The Life of the Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne The Life of the Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne presents a rich and nuanced portrait of one of America's greatest writers, exploring the thoughts and ideas of a man whose profound insights about the human condition continue to resonate in the modern day. Accessible to those with little knowledge of Hawthorne, this unique volume uses a new biographical approach based on exhaustive primary research that provides readers with a better understanding of the artist and his work. Author Dale Salwak challenges the presumption that Hawthorne was a reclusive, eccentric, and alienated man whose relevance to modern times is diminishing. Drawing from his forty-five years' experience reading, studying, and teaching Hawthorne, the author reveals a more approachable Hawthorne. In-depth and reflective chapters explore topics such as the circumstances that led Hawthorne to become a writer, the influence of Sophia Hawthorne on her husband's work, the theory of the unfulfilled homoerotic relationship between Hawthorne and Herman Melville, and more. Highlighting Hawthorne's special contributions to American literature, The Life of the Author: Nathaniel Hawthorne is essential reading for scholars, lecturers, and college students taking courses including Literary History, American Literature, and History of the Novel as well as anyone interested in biography, literature, and creativity. Dale Salwak is a professor of English at southern California's Citrus College and a recipient of Purdue University's Distinguished Alumni Award as well as a National Defense Education Act fellowship from the University of Southern California where he earned his Ph.D. He is the author of numerous books, including Kingsley Amis: Modern Novelist and Carl Sandburg: A Reference Guide, and the editor of The Wonders of Solitude, Anne Tyler as Novelist (Iowa, 1994), Philip Larkin: The Man and His Work (Iowa, 1989), and The Life and Work of Barbara Pym (Iowa, 1987). The first show of October has a wide range of topics. I open with a tragic story involving a member of the local Citrus College football team. I transition to baseball talk as the MLB Postseason gets under way this weekend. I have some opinions on the Tua injury discussion as well as the Brady/Gisele divorce speculation. There is plenty to vent about regarding the recent pitiful performance by my Los Angeles Rams in their game against the rival San Francisco 49ers. Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. According to Tzetzes, he rejected all romantic advances, eventually falling in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, staring at it for the remainder of his life. After he died, in his place sprouted a flower bearing his name. For at least 6 or 7 years, maybe more, an amazing event took place at APU (and then the Citrus College parking lot when they got booted). The LGBTQ club, first called the GSA (gay-straight alliance) and then Haven, put on a showcase of LGBTQ creativity and pride. At first, it was just called "Art Night," and it was held at the 7 Palms, an outdoor amphitheater ringed by palm trees...7 of them, I believe, though I don't think I ever actually counted. The first few years, the group was underground, and we relished the thrill of putting on an event with poetry, music, and visual art celebrating LGBTQ identities in plain sight on APU's campus. It was a brazen thing to do, since technically, we could have all been kicked out for doing it. But we did it. Abbie and Liz Cirelli both played significant roles in making the GSA/Haven and Art Night happen, and they both organized protests and movements to change the draconian culture and policies of APU. They made things happen by building coalitions and using them to force the administration and the culture to shift its policies and views of LGBTQ people. Badasses, both of them. This is the first of two episodes with Abbie and Liz who will be back to continue the stories about feminism and misogyny inside APU's conservative evangelical culture. You can find resources for LGBTQ advocacy on christian campuses at The REAP. One of the most valuable advantages of being a Claremont resident is access to some of the best schools and colleges. Inarguably key among those is Citrus College. Dr. Greg Schulz, Ed. D., named Citrus' new Superintendent and President in June of 2021 by the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees, was beyond kind to visit with Claremont Speaks and introduce himself to Claremont. In his disarmingly eloquent, relaxed and conversational style, he reveals his path to this new position, his passion for pursuing the betterment of the local colleges, and some of the key hurdles and accomplishments along the way. Dr. Schulz vividly outlines his near-term goals and long-range vision for Citrus College, plus the lengths the board, educators and others at Citrus go to make a Citrus degree of maximum value and an extraordinarily advantageous launch -point in the pursuit of further education. He deftly brings to light some lesser-known programs and offerings at Citrus to provide the students every chance to succeed, such as providing college-level/credit courses and tutoring for those still in high school, as examples. For anyone considering advancing their education - whether immediately post-high school, mid-career or for personal/professional growth and interest - listening to Dr. Schulz' interview will certainly place investigating Citrus College at the top of your "must-do" list. Please enjoy this episode, and we hope you'll take a moment to investigate and consider the many, many ways that Citrus College can help improve your career path, better your life and increase your fortune. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------Visit the Citrus College Website:https://www.citruscollege.edu/Pages/home.aspxContact Citrus College(626) 914-8821or email Dr. Schulz directlygschulz@citruscollege.edu...and don't hesitate to let Dr. Schulz know you heard him on Claremont Speaks.

Up until 2016, however, Dr. Solheim lived a secret “paranormal life” — from the time, at age four, he almost died …. Solheim was staying at his grandmother's farmhouse on a remote island in northern Norway. He became gravely ill from playing too long in the snow, and at some point in the night, he recalls waking up to see “an angelic figure emerging from light cascading down from the farmhouse's open-beamed ceiling ….” “The presence made me feel like everything was going to be OK, and I drifted back to sleep,” Solheim said. “When I woke up, [...]
We had the pleasure of interviewing Marko DeSantis of Sugarcult over Zoom video! In August 2001, SoCal rockers Sugarcult burst onto the scene with their anthemic debut album Start Static. Combining high-energy punk riffs and irresistible power-pop melodies with a heavy dose of youthful angst, Start Static quickly earned the group a legion of fans, and spawned three hit singles, "Bouncing Off the Walls," "Pretty Girl (The Way)," and "Stuck in America." Now, two decades later, Craft Recordings commemorates this enduring favorite with a deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl and digital reissue. Set for an October 8 street date and available for pre-order, the vinyl edition of Start Static (20th-Anniversary Edition) will feature the original album — newly remastered by the GRAMMY®-winning engineer, Paul Blakemore — plus three special bonus tracks: an early demo of "Say I'm Sorry," a live version of "Bouncing Off the Walls," plus a spirited cover of Elvis Costello & The Attraction's "No Action." The album comes housed in a gatefold jacket, featuring sculpted emboss printing and updated liner notes from the band. Fans can also find a special variant of the LP — pressed on clear vinyl and limited to 500 units — exclusively on Sugarcult's website and at Craft Recordings' online store. The digital edition, also available October 8, features an additional, previously unreleased live version of the band's hit single, "Stuck in America." and "Bouncing Off the Walls (Live)" Formed in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1998, Sugarcult — whose original lineup consisted of Tim Pagnotta (vocals/guitar), Airin Older (bass/vocals), Marko DeSantis (guitar), and Ben Davis (drums)— made their mark as one of the most dynamic and entertaining pop-punk bands to come out of the 2000s. After independently releasing two demos and two EPs, the quartet caught the ears of Ultimatum Music, who signed Sugarcult and connected them with producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More, The Replacements) to work on their debut full-length. Start Static went on to sell more than 300,000 copies, while the band embarked on nearly three years of non-stop touring. In addition to playing the main stage of Warped Tour and appearing at festivals like Glastonbury (UK), Summer Sonic (Japan), and Soundwaves (Australia), the group joined Green Day's American Idiot tour in the U.S. and Japan, as well as Blink 182's European arena tour. They would go on to headline hundreds of shows across North America, Europe, and Japan. Multiple songs off Start Static, meanwhile, could be heard on popular shows like MTV's Laguna Beach and in films like Van Wilder (the stars of which, Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid, appeared in the music video for "Bouncing Off the Walls.)" In the liner notes, guitarist DeSantis recalls that Start Static "was our confrontation and/or handshake with the world; our chance to get people to pay attention, earn their respect, and then, hopefully, win their hearts. The album title fit the narrative of the songs—which are mostly vignettes of young adult anxiety over the trials of messy romance and post-adolescent dissatisfaction and uncertainty. [Start Static] was our album title and our mission statement." Following Start Static, Sugarcult went on to release two more acclaimed albums (2004's Palm Trees and Power Lines and 2006's Lights Out), and two DVDs before embarking on an extended hiatus in 2008. Since then, each band member has excelled in a variety of fields within the music industry. Tim Pagnotta is an award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and producer who has collaborated with the likes of Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees, Walk the Moon, and Elle King. Airin Older went on to become a founding member of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and joined British alt-rock group thenewno2, featuring Dhani Harrison. Marko DeSantis is now a professor of music business, artist development and artist coaching at Los Angeles College of Music, Musicians Institute College of Music and Citrus College. He has also enjoyed several DJ residencies in the U.S. and Japan and has been featured as a guest speaker and panelist at SXSW, UCLA, and Sonos LEAD, among others. Ben Davis, meanwhile, enjoys a successful career writing and producing music for film, TV and commercials. We want to hear from you!
