How do you transform your mind, and how do you do it in real time amidst the challenges of work and life? How do you remain openhearted and generous in a competitive or even cutthroat environment? These aren't usually the kinds of questions that businesspeople ask themselves. Yet it's become Jeremy Hunter's mission to help today's entrepreneurs and organizational leaders realize the incredible value of asking—and answering—these deep questions.  In this podcast, Tami Simon speaks with the core faculty member of Sounds True's Inner MBA® program and a renowned authority on mindfulness and leadership about the “untaught essentials for business humans,” discussing the lifesaving practice of meditation; training our perception (and not just our intellect); why managers must learn how to manage themselves; placing a high value on attention and presence; examining how you construct your experience; using spiritual tools and teachings to create real business results; unconditional love; developing somatic intelligence; why it's so important to be grounded as a leader; setting the emotional tone for the group you work with; activating our collaborative superpowers by caring about and meeting each other's needs; transforming fear and anxiety into vitality and joy; pleasure, enjoyment, and recovering from “Frivolity Deficiency Syndrome”; acknowledging what is beautiful in your world; gratitude vs. appreciation; the opportunity for businesspeople in our times of uncertainty and accelerating change; creating a relationship with solidity; letting go of the beliefs and behaviors that no longer fit; and more. Today on the podcast, I get to talk to Jeremy Hunter about what it means to be a mindful leader during our modern times. Jeremy highlights how difficult it is for leaders to manage others without learning how to first manage themselves. This is an essential step because organizations experience the consciousness of the leader. Jeremy also discusses how important it is for leaders to focus on building relationships rather than the task-at-hand and how building trust is an essential ingredient, too. We finish our conversation discussing how powerful coaching is as a tool to help people learn, develop and grow. Listen to the whole episode and share your takeaways with us.    In order to have bigger impact in this world, we need to focus on monitoring our energy and creating helpful rituals. In 2020, Chicago indie-pop group Beach Bunny released their debut LP Honeymoon to much acclaim. One of the people that fell in love with the album, was Jeremy Hunter, ie Skatune Network. It was one of their favorite records of the year. Just a month earlier, they'd recorded a cover of an earlier Beach Bunny tune, “Prom Queen.” After Honeymoon was released, they considered covering another Beach Bunny song. Instead, they recorded the entire album.  Jer did this project in secrecy, not even telling Beach Bunny's singer/songwriter Lili Trifilio until it was nearly finished, earlier this year. And then on Valentine's Day, they surprise-released it to the world—Beach Bunny's record in its entirety, but all ska, and titled Honeyrude and complete with some delightful ska easter eggs that reference The English Beat, Bob Marley, and The Specials.  On this episode, we bring on Jeremy Hunter and Lili Trifilio to talk about Honeyrude. We talk to Lili about what inspired the original record, learn about Jer's process of transposing the album to ska, and get her reaction to the record. We analyze this album from all angles to understand what makes ska unique, and why a ska cover of a non-ska song is so infectious when it's done right. Check out Hey Coffee at heycoffeeco.com and get fresh, sustainably sourced coffee mailed to your door. In December 2016, multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Hunter got bored and decided to record a ska cover of “Feliz Navidad,” calling it “Feliz NaviSKA.” This silly idea got a lot of eyeballs, way more than they anticipated, so Jeremy kept recording ska covers of songs by Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Blink 182 and other groups. The views continued to grow. This was the birth of SkaTune Network, a YouTube channel with nearly 200,000 subscribers, and several viral videos. Jeremy is our guest on In Defense of Ska. They have shocked countless people outside of the ska scene who’ve assumed the music is dead, and can’t fathom how Jeremy has so many fans. Additionally, Jeremy also plays trombone in the band We Are The Union and creates original music as “Jer.”On today’s episode, we walk through Jeremy’s career in ska, focusing on several key moments in their life, including the Talent Farm, their introduction to Community Records, and joining We Are The Union. In the midst of COVID-19 uncertainty and the anxiety it is provoking it can do the heart and mind good to be distracted with positive stories of people doing good in our world. We need that right now.My guests for this episode are Naomi Hunter and Jeremy Hunter, the co-Managing Directors of Empowering Resources, a boutique publisher of children's books that encourage meaningful conversations between kids and their trusted adults.Their books handle tough topics with nurturing and understanding. They allow conversations to evolve to where kids need them to go.Naomi is the author of A Secret Safe To Tell, a gentle book that encourages meaningful conversations about body safety, the importance of not keeping secrets and confiding in trusted adults if something is making you uncomfortable. Naomi wrote it when she became a mother, working through her own experience of childhood sexual abuse. She hoped that she could empower other children to share their experiences and get the help and support that they need much earlier in life than she was able to.Within the first three months of its release, A Secret Safe to Tell encouraged 10 young children to disclose sexually abusive situations to their carers. These children were instantly validated and the abuse stopped. They did not need to wait until becoming an adult to start to heal, as Naomi had to. A Secret Safe to Tell and Even Mummy Cries (Naomi's second book) were both nominated for Children's Book of the Year in Australia and the Simplified Chinese version of A Secret Safe to Tell just won a gold award at a children's choice book awards in China, where 1.3 million children voted for their favourite book!Empowering Resources publish for many authors whose stories help kids to feel validated, to feel seen and to feel empowered. As high profile psychologist and past guest here on the show, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg says, 'These are some of the most important books that exist.'This is a joyful conversation with both Naomi and Jeremy. I ask them:Who is Empowering Resources and why do the books you publish matter?Naomi, why did you write A Secret Safe to Tell? How did writing it help you and how has publishing it helped others? What feedback to you get from parents and professionals about the books, how they use them and how they may have helped?Where do professionals go for resources like these/where can the books be found? What is your advice to parents and care givers about having difficult conversations with kids? It's a privilege to share Naomi, Jeremy and their authors' work with you. HOWA EP 53 - BRAD COOK      I was listening to Larry Klein on a recent mix with the masters explain this idea that a producer is someone that sees the spark of uniqueness in an artist and tries to amplify that.  That is a noble process and so nuanced that it takes years to know when to speak, when to encourage, when to call it a night, when to listen and so on. Brad knows aaaallll about aaaallll of this ! He's an excellent energy in the room and so many musicians can benefit from his touch.  I've only been privy to his vibe in a session on two occasions but his presence is both large and also magically effortless.  I think it's the fact that you know he gets it. He knows a real moment and he's in it for the depth, not the racking up of medals and the shallow status games.  The first time I met him, he was rather high and laughing at a bass. It was a gathering with Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) and a large crew of players in Nashville where I ended up shouting into a mic with the other members of the collective they call “Gangs” . That first meeting was a great hang but there was no time to chat and so I was super happy to bump into him again on my mystical trip to the sonic ranch in Texas. Turns out that's where a lot of the latest Bon Iver record was made and Brad was there the whole time as producer so it only seemed right to jump into that story and to see what that was all about and to feel out the ways Brad has learned to listen and cultivate the fledgling music growing in the room. He's a formidable musician and a very easy going chap. I loved chatting with him! Please welcome to the show BRAD COOK!   _______________________________   In the nitty I gently roll the dice on music asking what probability can offer the sequencer? Suddenly the decision to stop giving our precious energy and attention to things that just don't matter becomes a no-brainer. (Spoiler alert: IT'S MASSIVE.)Today's Rebel Souls conversation with Jeremy Hunter is a wake-up call for us all.
