As a volcanologist, natural hazards expert, and founder of Blueprint Earth, Jess Phoenix has dedicated her life to scientific exploration. Her career path—hard earned in the male-dominated world of science—has led her into still-flowing Hawaiian lava fields, congressional races, glittering cocktail parties at Manhattan’s elite Explorers Club, and numerous pairs of Caterpillar work boots. It has also inspired her to devote her life to making science more inclusive and accessible. Ms. Adventure skillfully blends personal memoir, daring adventure, and scientific exploration, following Phoenix’s journey from reality television sites deep in Ecuadorian jungles to Andean glaciers, university classrooms to Death Valley in summer. She has even chased down members of a Mexican cartel to retrieve a stolen favorite rock hammer. Readers will delight in her unbelievable adventures, all embarked on for the love of science. Listen Now to Jess Phoenix Jess is a volcanologist, an extreme explorer, and a professional field scientist who has dedicated her life to scientific exploration and to making science more inclusive and accessible to us all. She loves all things volcano Photo by Nicholas Frend.and shares some of her amazing adventures with us in her new memoir, “Ms Adventure.” We had a lot of fun with her in our interview, touching on such topics as what it’s like being inside Hawaii’s active Kilahuea volcano, the sounds emanating from lava lakes, generating energy from the extreme heat, respecting native traditions, volcano weather, daring drone shots, CO2 emissions and climate change, the Explorer’s Club new mission, meeting Buzz Aldrin, and eruptions throughout the solar system. A joy to speak with, she has great enthusiasm in sharing her stories and science with us. In our hour we barely touched on what she has covered in her first memoir. What’s the frontier on Mother Earth to explore, touch, feel, and grok? Just ask Jess..

This week we present two stories from people who let science lead them down a rabbit hole of curses. Part 1: Science journalist Erik Vance decides to get cursed by a witch doctor for science. Part 2: After taking a rock from Mauna Loa, volcanologist Jess Phoenix starts to worry that her offering to the volcano goddess Pele was not enough. Erik Vance is an award-winning science journalist based in Baltimore. Before becoming a writer he was, at turns, a biologist, a rock climbing guide, an environmental consultant, and an environmental educator. He graduated in 2006 from UC Santa Cruz science writing program and became a freelancer as soon as possible. His work focuses on the human element of science — the people who do it, those who benefit from it, and those who do not. He has written for The New York Times, Nature, Scientific American, Harper’s, National Geographic, and a number of other local and national outlets. His first book, Suggestible You, is about how the mind and body continually twist and shape our realities. While researching the book he was poked, prodded, burned, electrocuted, hypnotized and even cursed by a witchdoctor, all in the name of science. Jess Phoenix is Executive Director and co-founder of environmental scientific research organization Blueprint Earth. She is a volcanologist, an extreme explorer, and former candidate for United States Congress. She has been chased by narco-traffickers in Mexico, dodged armed thieves in remote Peru, raced horses across Mongolia, worked on the world’s largest volcano in Hawaii, piloted the Jason2 submersible on an undersea volcano, and explored deep in the Australian Outback. Jess believes science should be accessible to everyone, and that creative possibility is limitless. Jess is a Fellow in The Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society, a featured scientist on the Discovery and Science Channels, an invited TEDx speaker, and she has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, in Wired, Fast Company, on National Public Radio, on CNN, NBC, and has written for the BBC. She is the host of the podcast Catstrophe! (catastropheshow.com) and has a book coming out in Spring 2020 with Timber Press called Miss Adventure: My Life as a Geologist, Explorer, and Professional Risk-Taker. Catastrophes are part of life, but many of the worst are the direct result of human error. Whether it’s poor planning, design flaws, or simply greed or hubris, we are often our own worst enemy. Join volcanologist Jess Phoenix as she explores the stories of natural disaster, failure, and calamity, and what we learn from our fascination with digging through the rubble.

Jess Phoenix ran for Congress this year in California's 25th District. She is the Democratic daughter of two Republican FBI agents. She was in high school just up the street from Columbine when what everyone who thought would be the last high school shooting occurred. She thought the adults would take care of it. Soon she was an adult, stepping up to make a difference herself. Jess deals with climate change every single day as a volcanogist, geologist and with her nonprofit environmental scientific research organization, Blueprint Earth. In all of her roles - daughter, congressional candidate, scientist, etc. -- she has developed a true gift of finding points of commonality. Yes, even in the times of extreme dissension and violence, she has a way with our hearts: speaking to them, teaching them and inspiring the hell out of them. Let's follow Jess's advice: "If we can just show each other more empathy... now that's something we want to go viral." Post on all social media your tips for finding points of commonality, for being a point of light in your life, bringing LOVE into our current landscape of dissension and division. 00:00:00 - Abe, Joe, and Ryan are joined by volcanologist Jess Phoenix, who is stepping away from science to run for Congress in California's 25th district. In our first segment, we talk about how she got started in science with a strong outreach focus to help prepare the next generation of field scientists in her community with her organization Blueprint Earth. 00:28:42 - We take a break from trying to help to have a beverage. Abe tells the tale of Shackleton's failed Antarctic expedition that eventually led to some recovered Scotch whisky that has been recreated at a more affordable price point, which he enjoys with a little ice (probably not Antarctic ice though). You can read about the expedition in the graphic novel Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey. Joe struggles his way through some wax to open his Indian Wells Brewing Co. Death Valley Black Cherry Soda, which he says is really good. Ryan makes a Drunk Uncle cocktail with some common (read: uncommon) ingredients using the same Scotch that Abe has. It's almost like they planned it! 00:40:16 - In part two of our chat with Jess, we talk about her decision to transition into the political realm and how she feels her scientific worldview shapes her position on various policies. Plus what lessons scientists can learn from Jess' experiences out on the campaign trail. If you want to learn more or are interested in donating or volunteering to her campaign, you can do so at her website, and follow along on Twitter and Facebook.* 01:04:56 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like campaign promises, we hope you believe them but understand if you don't. First up, we have a BSso to grant to patron Morgan Marshall, who writes in to tell us how excited he was to hear about research happening in his own backyard on a recent episode. His thesis title is: The effect of free coffee of observations of Fata Morgana within Fata Morgana in the Desolation Wilderness, CA. Thanks, M^2! Next up, Abe has an e-mail from Les I. in Canada who comes up with a Brachiolope Brew Pack. Help us out, home-brewers! Jess Phoenix, a geologist, announces her candidacy for the 2018 congressional race for Steve Knight's 25th district seat at Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce on Monday, April 18, 2017. Katharine Lotze/The Signal Jess Phoenix is running for California's 25th District Congressional seat. Our Congress lacks expertise in science and how science works at a basic level, and as a result there are some poorly thought out decisions are being made. Even worse, Congress is allowed to engage in explicitly anti-science political activities, such as assembling activist science deniers as the so-called science committees or subcommittees in both houses. This would not be as easy if there were a few dozen actual scientists in the House and Senate. Jess Phoenix sees this as a challenge that must be met by scientists joining as active and influential members of the government. The seat she is running for is currently being held by a climate denialist. Please consider donating to the campaign. Even if you don't live in her future district, as a nation we need to have more scientists guiding policy from seats of power, such as the House of Representatives. Here is the campaign site: Jess2018. Here is a TEDx talk, about geology, by the candidate: Greg Laden interviewed Dr. Phoenix for this podcast.

In our time producing Women Worldwide, I have spoken with people from all walks of life. I’ve interviewed entrepreneurs, inventors, and educators from around the world. But today is a first. I don't think we've ever had a volcanologist on the show. Meet Jess Phoenix, a professional field scientist who's running for the California Congress. In addition to her hands-on work as a volcanologist and burgeoning political career, Jess is executive director, principal investigator and co-founder of a revolutionary environmental scientific research organization called Blueprint Earth. She's also a fellow in the Explorer's Club, a featured scientist on the Discovery Channel and Science Channel and a TEDx speaker. Her work has been covered in Popular Science Magazine, NASA's FameLab on National Public Radio, CNN international and on This Week in Science. Her mission is to inspire everyone to tap into their innate curiosity, igniting wonder about our planet and the world we live in. Stay tuned to hear incredible stories from Jess’s professional life and find out how she’s using her scientific background to fuel political change and encourage people around her. You don't have to focus or specialize too early because you can change directions… You can get into things at any age. It doesn't require you doing it from when you're five or anything like that.” —Jess Phoenix “You always have to think about what the greater cause is and that's what keeps you going even when it's rough 'cause it's not all fun and games. It's not all campfires—I mean sometimes you deal with horse thieves.” —Jess Phoenix “We are humans, we are so adaptable. So that's what we have to do. We have to adapt to the challenges and that means be flexible, be creative, and solve those problems.” —Jess Phoenix “It doesn't matter what your problem is, if it's an erupting volcano, a flat tire, God knows what! You just look at it, and you just take it apart, piece by piece. And you figure out how you're gonna get out of this situation you're in, and you just do your job.” —Jess Phoenix “You don't have to be the best, but you have to be so good that they can't ignore you.” —Jess Phoenix Resources Jess Phoenix for Congress Volcano Jess Connect with Jess on Twitter, Facebook, and here and here on Instagram

Jess Phoenix is fortunate enough to have parents, who were both FBI agents, that put on bulletproof vests as they went to work everyday. They were great role models, and Jess could see a less conventional career path. Though many people thought Jess, too, would become an FBI agent, she took to geology as she realized it was absolutely amazing and answered the fundamental questions about the world. She's tired of inside jobs, and as a geologist you can make a career out of going to interesting places and keep people safe. She became a Volcanologist as the work is exciting and would save millions of people around the world, who are living near volcanoes and hazard areas. Life is dangerous but worthwhile. Jess worked on 6 continents and Antarctica is on her list to explore. She wants our planet to be healthy, our homes and outdoors to be healthy not for this generation only, but for the next 10 generations that come down the pipeline. Jess has been on the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel as a scientist. She's been in all kinds of science magazines, NASA's magazines, The Radio and CNN. Jess is even running for Congress because the guy she's running against is a climate science denier. Adventures of Jess are wild. She competed in the world's longest horse race which is around 660 miles across Mongolia. It was in this she was chased by a Mongolian biker wanting to assault her. Other times, she’s been chased by these Narco Traffickers of Mexico and she managed to chase them too.
