In an interview episode, I talk to Zoe Cohen, a highly experienced board-level director and Master Coach. We talk about the importance of taking action to save the planet, climate communications, her activism and work with Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil. This episode was recorded before the recent UK General Election and *WARNING* it does contain some swearing. Learn more about me and my services @CWE Communications Thanks to my editor Callums World. Zoe has kindly provided some links and reading materials for us as well. Climate Psychology Alliance (CPA) and support – it's really important for those of who feel this deeply to not be on our own with it, and to seek support, see https://www.climatepsychologyalliance.org/index.php/find-support   Planetary Boundaries – I described how 6 of the 9 ‘planetary boundaries' have been identified as broken/passed – here is the framework behind that, developed by Professor Johan Rockstrom and colleagues -https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html (there's a Netflix movie on it too, with David Attenborough if people prefer, but of course it's less blunt than it needs to be)   The ‘Humanity Project' - https://humanityproject.uk/ - I talked about the project here in the UK to upgrade democracy, through local community assemblies, and a new grass roots national people's assembly – by the people for the people    And just to add – deliberative democracy and citizens assemblies can be global as well as local and national. A Global Assembly was run in 2021  https://globalassembly.org/ with 100 ordinary people from all over the world. Now a coalition of organizations, individuals and governments are working to establish a permanent Global Citizens' Assembly, to address humanity's greatest challenges, and try to place citizens at the heart of global governance. See  https://www.gcacoalition.org/   ‘Breaking Together' – I recommend this book by Professor Jem Bendell. It is a critical and multidisciplinary in-depth view of our current predicament, and some of the potential responses to it. Jem's blog is here and includes a page on the book with a free e-read version - https://jembendell.com/2023/04/08/breaking-together-a-freedom-loving-response-to-collapse/   The 'Great Simplification' -  If people aren't already familiar with it, this as Nate Hagen's podcast and YouTube series -https://www.thegreatsimplification.com/ - also a good source of multidisciplinary, big picture perspectives on our human predicament, whilst I don't necessarily agree with all the perspectives represented, it's still a good source.   ‘Defend Our Juries' - https://defendourjuries.org/ this is an important campaign which began last year to defend all UK citizens rights to a fair jury trial. Jurors have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to their conscience – but this is under attack in multiple ways and must be defended.   ‘This is Rigged' - https://www.thisisrigged.org/ - This is a great youth-led, campaign in Scotland, which is taking nonviolent action to pressure the government on food justice to ensure everyone can eat and no one goes hungry

Lauding an alternative viewpoint to always aiming for the loftiest standards, in this PH+ Revisited Lloyd is championing Toby Cambray's Insulate Britain-inspired article, from February 2022: Let's get decarbonisation done. It's an article about taking a differently-considered approach to domestic decarbonisation strategy and one that Lloyd has referenced frequently because of its refreshingly pragmatic look at prioritising our action. Should we favour deep, whole-house retrofits as per traditional Passivhaus dogma, or should we push for the installation of heat pumps and do just enough retrofit to make it all work? You can read what Lloyd has written about 'heatpumpification' in response to Toby's article on Treehugger but this feels like sufficient summary for here:"He breaks my spellchecker by verbing heat pumps, writing that while you could just install heat pumps, "this does not however mean that it's a good idea to put a heat pump in a building with poor fabric efficiency. Although there are cases where other constraints mean we have little choice, ultimately we need to both (mostly) Insulate Britain and (mostly) Heatpumpify Britain." Heatpumpify and heatpumpification have been added to my dictionary".Retrofit is a part of the climate discourse that can often feel dominated by a puritan attitude towards fabric-first approaches and the heresy that Toby presents feels like a  practical philosophy that balances high-performance building with an awareness of embodied carbon. We also make sure that Richard Lowes gets his credit for authoring this new verb: to "heatpumpify" a home or building. And, when we get around to learning iMovie, there might be a little bit of video on our Zero Ambitions LinkedIn page, so give us a follow there if you can.Notes from the showLet's get decarbonisation done, from Passive House Plus (February 2022)Toby Cambray on LinkedInGreengauge Building Energy ConsultantsLloyd's Treehugger piece in response to Toby's article**SOME SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**We don't actually earn anything from this, and it's quite a lot of work, so we have to promote the day jobs.Zero Ambitions Partners email address - zap@eiux.agencyFollow us on the Zero Ambitions LinkedIn pageSubscribe and advertise with Passive House Plus (UK edition here too)Check Lloyd's Substack: Carbon UpfrontJoin ACANJoin the AECB Join the IGBCEmail Alex and Dan about websites, branding, and communications - zap@eiux.agency; Everything is User Experience**END OF SELF-PROMOTING CALLS TO ACTION**

Climate-change protesters snarled traffic by blocking four London bridges on Friday, while other activists continued weeks of demonstrations targeting oil terminals across Britain. Cars and red double-decker buses backed up along roads as hundreds of Extinction Rebellion activists occupied London's Waterloo, Blackfriars, Lambeth and Westminster bridges, calling for an end to new fossil fuel investments. The Metropolitan Police force said “pockets of protest” were causing delays and disruption across central London. The demonstrations are part of a growing climate action movement that has also seen the group Insulate Britain obstruct highways and roads to press demands that the government fund more energy-efficient homes. In response, the Conservative government has introduced measures to curb disruptive protests, a move that has sparked debate about freedom of speech. On Friday the government praised oil companies for obtaining court orders to stop demonstrators who have been blocking oil depots. More than 600 people have been arrested over the past two weeks after environmental activists climbed atop oil tankers, padlocked themselves to structures and blocked roads at oil depots across the U.K. The group Just Stop Oil, which is affiliated with Extinction Rebellion, is demanding the government stop any new oil and gas projects. Energy Minister Greg Hands said that “while we value the right to peaceful protest, it is crucial that these do not cause disruption to people's everyday lives.” He said several firms have been granted injunctions that limit protesters' actions and access to sites. Protests continued Friday at sites in southeast and central England despite the injunctions, with dozens of arrests. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Initial research on social movements & protest, published by James Ozden on March 28, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Who we are (in a nutshell) Social Change Lab is a new EA research project that is conducting research into whether protest could be a cost-effective way to achieve positive social change. We're initially focusing on climate change and animal advocacy, and trying to understand whether protest should play a larger, or smaller, role in accelerating progress in these cause areas. Whilst more speculative, we're also considering if protest can play a role for other issues, such as pandemic prevention, immigration reform, and existential risks. We put out some preliminary research in November last year, looking at the role that Extinction Rebellion UK played in making climate change more salient in the UK, and giving an overview of a small amount of the literature on the efficacy of protest. At the moment, we've just finished two literature reviews: one on the impact of protests and Social Movement Organisations (SMOs), and one on factors that affect success rates for protests. We are grateful to have received funding from the EA Infrastructure Fund to cover our expenses until July 2022. Context Whilst EA has the goal of doing as much good as possible, it's not clear what the best ways to do this yet are. In a survey of 40 EA community leaders, people were most excited about greater “EA exploration” i.e. greater research into possible causes, interventions and ideas that could allow us to do more good. In particular, surveyed community leaders were interested in bringing in ideas from outside of traditional EA discourse. Similarly, as noted by Charity Entrepreneurship, there is lots of opportunity for organisations that engage in Exploratory Altruism, and we intend to explore the possibility that protest could be more cost-effective than other EA-recommended routes to change. Generally, as a community, we've been pretty research-focused in trying to understand the best ways to improve the world. However, much of this work hasn't touched on how social movements interact with the world, and how they affect social change. We see this as an opportunity to add value by providing research that addresses some unanswered questions about the role of social movements in improving the world. Specifically, we think this work can be valuable to two audiences in particular: Philanthropists seeking to fund the most effective routes to positive change in their respective cause area, where SMOs utilising protest could be a contender. For example, if we discover that animal advocacy protests are more cost-effective in reducing animal suffering relative to existing funded work, it makes sense we also fund these opportunities (all else being equal) if we seek to maximise our impact. Social movements who utilise protest currently, who can employ and integrate best practices from social science literature to make their campaigns more effective. Why Protest? We believe that there is moderate evidence that protest can have an impact on public opinion, voting behaviour, public discourse, legislator behaviour, and corporate behaviour. Our interest in protest began by examining the impact of Extinction Rebellion, whose protest activity coincided with an increase in concern around climate change in the UK - as can be seen in the figure above. The concern about climate change in Europe and the United States has been increasing rapidly, and we believe that it is plausible that this increase has been at least partially due to protest activity by Extinction Rebellion, Fridays for Future, and Insulate Britain. That being said, it is clearly not the case that the increased salience of climate change is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that there is a causal connection between protest...

Hello everyone welcome back to our channel Today we'll talked about OpinionPity the poor, oppressed driver forced to share their roads with the rest of usCatherine BennettWe're still in thrall to the car – to judge by the lenient sentences for reckless motoristsReports from the frontline of the war on motorists have made distressing reading for some vehicle owners. With low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) surviving both physical and media assault, improved protections for pedestrians and cyclists in a revised Highway Code will weaken still further, they discover, a right to road domination long understood to be, if not divinely ordained, something even better: unassailable.Howls of below-the-line outrage in traditionally motor-friendly media confirm that views on road use can still, given the number of cycling and walking motorists, be startlingly tribal. To make vulnerable road users safer, as the government intends with revised hierarchy at junctions, appears for the extreme motorised group to be a more grievous insult to their status, if possible, than the sight of a straggly planter where there was formerly a Land Rover's right to roam. What, after all, is the point of a massive city-based 4x4 if it must now give way, as in the revised regulations, to a cyclist enjoying the right to ride safely in the middle of the road, or to go first at a junction? The rage is near palpable. “Goes against the natural order of things,” offers one Telegraph reader. “Cyclists and pedestrians will die clinging on to their rights, while ordinary citizen motorists will rot in gaol at the taxpayer's expense.”What next for an oppressed and often unloved group whose only fault, beyond the environmental damage, is their involvement in the majority of vulnerable road user deaths? Could they soon face prison sentences for simply being a bit pissed and turning a car over? Permanent driving bans for, say, killing someone or quite reasonably driving over an extra-irksome cyclist? It may be some comfort to these persecuted drivers that UK targets for road casualty reduction were abandoned back in 2010. That Grant Shapps, the transport minister, introduces himself as a “petrol-head”. And whatever excruciating junction-based humiliations may lie ahead at the hands of pedestrians and cyclists, terrible drivers can still, as demonstrated last week, hope for leniency in the courts. In the first of two cases that could, equally, have been designed to frighten potential cyclists off the roads, a Mr Alan Moult, aged 73, was jailed for chasing after a cyclist (including along a pavement) then running over him with his Land Rover Freelander. His victim, who had annoyed him, was fortunate to survive injuries including a fractured pelvis, torn genitals, six broken ribs and a punctured liver.By itself, a dashcam recording in which the cursing Moult's wife screams at him to calm down, makes a powerful case for acknowledging that cars, like kitchen knives, are murder weapons in the wrong hands. Since Moult's conviction was for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, he was jailed for 18 months and chastised for behaviour that was “grossly disproportionate”. Locals can expect to see him back in his Freelander, a lifetime ban having presumably been judged over-harsh, after a three-year disqualification.A reluctance to impose long bans seems to have coincided with the 'stagnation' of UK road safety. In what can't have been the best promotional week for Land Rover (an angry Range Rover driver was also charged for “nudging” Insulate Britain protesters), another prominent customer, the minor celebrity and driving ban veteran Katie Price, received a suspended sentence for driving when uninsured and disqualified. She was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. The judge also imposed costs of £213, and a two-year driving ban – an arguably disappointing choice when a longer version could have protected the public from a motorised Price for 80 years. Then again, a speeding driver recently jailed – for 40 months – after killing a 15-year-old boy, was disqualified for three years.A reluctance to impose long bans seems to have coincided with what the Towards Zero Foundation regrets as the “stagnation” of UK road safety. If the UK aligned itself with the UN's target of a 50% (by 2030) reduction in road fatalities and serious injury, it argues, “we have the opportunity to save around 170,000 people from dying or experiencing life-changing injuries from road collision”.Sussex police are considering appealing against Price's sentence, which “could have and should have been much worse”. It might even, given her vast following, have doubled as one of those teachable moments recommended by anti-knife crime experts: “An event or experience which presents an opportunity to learn something new or re-evaluate an existing belief.” In this case, to re-evaluate the existing belief that, whatever the Highway Code might say about junctions, car drivers belong at the top of the road-using hierarchy. A serial traffic offender who was lucky to trash nothing more than her own car, has, the public may instead have noted, been more forgivingly treated than the Insulate Britain pedestrians jailed in November. Their sentences of between three and six months (along with combined costs of £45,000) were welcomed as a deterrent by National Highways: “The judge's decision will hopefully make people think again about carrying out reckless and dangerous protests such as these.”Teachable moment: if you want to behave recklessly and dangerously on a road without incarceration, inconvenience, or even incurring a large fine, it's advisable to do it inside a car. As for almost killing a stranger in a moment of madness: that too, as demonstrated by Mr Moult, is best done, for the avoidance of more stringent penalties, from a seatbelted position inside, for preference, one of the car industry's more environmentally objectionable models.Where does this leave the war on motorists (as the imposition of any road safety measures is traditionally known)? Some, no doubt, are likely to feel deeply their humbling by less magnificent road users.“Pedestrians leap from the prow of my Morgan,” Boris Johnson wrote when a motoring columnist, “the bonnet connoting the size of my organ.” By way of compensation for this lost status they may, then, escape a good deal of future disappointment. That's all for today, please like , share , subscribe Thank you see you next time bye bye☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆https://linktr.ee/jacksonlibon---------------------------------------------------#facebook #instagram #amour #couple #couplegoals #famille #relation #doudou #youtube #twitter #tiktok #love #reeĺs #shorts #instagood #follow #like #ouy #oyu #babyshark #lilnasx #girl #happybirthday #movie #nbayoungboy #garden #fromthebayou #deviance #autotrader #trading #khan #academy #carter #carguru #ancestry #accords #abc #news #bts #cbs #huru #bluebook #socialmedia #whatsapp #music #google #photography #memes #marketing #india #followforfollowback #likeforlikes #a #insta #fashion #k #trending #digitalmarketing #covid #o #snapchat #socialmediamarketing #bhfyp
