Rebecca and Lon build out a coaching empire that takes full use of the manuals and techniques they developed building successful home service companies. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Seaside Plumbing Ad] Rick: Told you, Brian. Brian: Told me what? Rick: This is part two of last week's episode. Brian: Oh, yeah. And it was getting good. Rick: If you missed it, go back and listen to part one first. Take it away, fellas. Rebecca Cassel: Yeah, so, Lon, as I said, he was my business partner, and it was funny. I would say, "That sometimes you really like your business partners and sometimes you don't." And I think Lon and I went through the, hey, I don't like you very much, but we really respect each other. We had very different strengths and weaknesses. I am very operational, strategic, and accounting. He was sales and marketing and relational. And so the combination was pretty fierce. And he called me one day and said, "Hey, we're going to start an organization. I just got invited to join a group of investors in St. Louis to start an organization that will help more contractors." And he said, "We're going to actually branch out of just doing HVAC. I think we're going to do plumbing and maybe eventually electrical." I go, "Wow, that's really exciting." He goes, "I'm moving to St. Louis, so I'll keep in touch with what's going on." I was living in North Carolina, and he was living in Illinois at the time. And I thought, wow, what a cool thing. I go, "Well, if I can be of help, obviously I'm here doing it, writing operations manuals or procedures, or obviously I'd love to be a client. So when you get this all up and going, that'll be exciting." About three months later, he called me, and he said, "Hey, I think you should be a part of this." And I was like, "What do you mean? I'm running an HVAC business in a completely different state." And again, before all the technology where you could do everything remote, he goes, "I think what we're going to do is going to really change the industry dramatically, and I know you would want to be a part of that." And he said, "Why don't you find a way to develop our comfort advisor into the general manager, and let's get this going to where maybe you could come be a part of this operationally." Stephen Semple: And which business was this, Rebecca? Rebecca Cassel: This was Success Group International. Stephen Semple: This was Success Group, okay. Rebecca Cassel: Yes. At the time we had an umbrella name called BenVest, but it's what became, we started Plumber Success first, but it was Success Group International. And so I went in and talked with some of the other founders about what we're going to do, the CEO, Jim Abrams and Lon was already employed, and I got to meet Patty Myers, who is their VP of Finance, and I ended up being the fourth employee. We started in St. Louis and said, "Hey, we're going to build an organization that helps home services be successful. We're going to impact lives by helping these business owners become more successful." Stephen Semple: So I want to step back and cover just a couple of other things. It's amazing you had the opportunity to work with Jim so closely, with Jim Abrams. And anybody in the home services or the marketing space knows that name, like a famous, famous guy. So you had a chance to learn a lot from him, but you also had a chance to learn a lot from another marketing person who has a lot of fame in the home services space...

Roy L Hales/ COrtes Currents - The inaugrial meeting of the new Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Board occurs today. All of the incoming and re-elected Directors will be sworn in. Both of the two new Directors from our broadcast area, Mark Vonesch and Robyn Mawhinney, will be among them. Cortes Currents spoke to Mawhinney about her preparations to take office. My days have been very full since the election. I had a seven hour orientation session at the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) office, and I learned from the many different departments what they're working on and how they intersect and can support Area C and Quadra Island. I've had other meetings with other staff members as well, including Tommy Yates, the corporate officer. I've been learning about the options and considerations as I work on how best to achieve the community advisory council that I spoke about during my campaign,” she explained. “There are issues, of course, which continue from one director to the next, and I'm really grateful for Jim Abrams commitment to a smooth and informed transition. He and I have had several long conversations.” She's also been getting emails and phone calls from her constituants. One of the ideas that she found particularly intriging was trying to come to a strategic alignment with the other Regional Directors, on the issues they want to prioritize over the next four years. “Many staff decisions are filtered through these strategic priorities and initiatives. I understand that the board will be working together on these in spring 2023, setting the direction for the next four years, and I am looking forward to that,” said Mawhinney. “It feels to me like each director really has the best interests of their community at heart, and each of the electoral area communities have very different needs and priorities within them.” Gerald Whally gave the other rural Directors a tour of the Sayward Valley and village last week. Mawhinney said she is enjoying getting to know the other Directors, and listed their top priorities: Gerald Whalley (Area A: Sayward to Kyuquot/Nootka) - keeping taxes low and people as unfettered as possible by any sort of regulation. John Rice (Area D: South of Campbell River to Oyster Bay, from the Strait of Georgia to Buttle Lake) - water is important t the whole community Vonesch (Area B: Cortes Island) - who has been wotrking with the Cortes Housing Society on a plan to impose a 3% tax will be asking the SRD for a letter of support to impose a 3% tax on all of Cortes Island's short term rental units. Mawhinney was impressed by the fact Vonesch is ready to ask the SRD for a letter of support. If he gets it, the next step will be to approach the provine. “It was great hearing how far Cortes has come in their work towards affordable housing. I think that here on Quadra we have a lot to learn from Cortes,” she said. Mawhinney also spoke about Jim Abram's assistance dealing with the Outer Islands. The SRD has completed a fire brigade study for the Surge Narrows Community Association. They are currentlly assessing whether it meets their needs, or if there's some other option which might meet their needs better. The SRD is also about to install pumps on the wharfs at Owen Bay and Evans (Sonora Island), Evans Bay (Read Island), Surge Narrows (Read Island) and Port Neville (on the B.C. Mainland). This is a fire protection measure that that Mawhinney inherited from Abram. She learned about at her orientation meeting and the SRD engineer has agreed to let her come along when they do the installation. “I'm really excited to see Owens Bay and Evans Bay. I visited Surge Narrows four times during my candidacy, but I haven't had a tchance to explore further,” she said. about I believe that visiting and experiencing a location expands one's understanding and respect for a place, and that I'm really looking forward to it.”
Episode 2216 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Stephen Cunnane and they discuss brain development and fats, taking care of your brain, supplements, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/taking-care-your-brain-dr-stephen-cunnane-episode-2216 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS TAKING CARE OF YOUR BRAIN Vinnie starts the show by sharing how he heard about Dr. Stephen Cunnane through Dr. Mary Newport, who has been on the show recently. (1:45) Dr. Steven Cunnane talks a bit about his book, The book discusses brain development in babies and the need for healthy fats. (6:00) It also discusses how various nutrients play the part in various ways in human evolution. The big question Vinnie and Stephen discuss is: are you taking care of your brain? (15:00) Or are you letting it rot with what you are eating? Vinnie's interest in the brain comes from taking years of beatings playing football; as a result, he's curious about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). (16:00) Stephen says it's never too late to be able to make improvements; the question becomes "what can you do"? (21:25) Part of the challenge is the parameters given to doctors that make them hesitant to suggest low-carb. Mark Cucazzella is brought up as an example. The two discuss the movie "First Do No Harm", by Jim Abrams of the Charlie Foundation. (25:05) Charlie's doctors wanted to give him a lobotomy for his seizures; instead, they controlled his epilepsy with the ketogenic diet. They also discuss Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Steve Phinney, Tim Noakes, and others and what an important part they play in low-carb science. They switch to discuss certain limitations of the current healthcare systems. (29:50) Certain low-carb doctors are walking away from standard practice so they can actually practice health care and not sick care. ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Vinnie and Stephen also discuss what zinc and other minerals are optimal for the brain and how they help. (34:10) They discuss iodine, zinc, selenium, and certain deficiencies. They chat about the best sources of various nutrients. More is not always better, and Dr. Cunnane explains why. Don't over-intellectualize it: just eat sensibly. The conversation leads to a discussion about omega fatty acids, cholesterol, and ketones, and how the brain needs them. (46:30) There is still plenty to learn about cognitive decline and Alzheimer's; a lot of questions remain! (51:00) But there is more to it than diet and diabetes; social interaction, looking forward to things, and exercise seem to play a part as well in keeping a healthy brain. Conflicts of interest in science and medicine muddy up the waters of good information. (55:00) Dr. Cunnane has been awarded a research chair position at his university; as a result, the research will focus on ketotherapeutics. (1:01:30) They'll be studying ketogenic interventions of all sorts for mental illness, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Jim emailed me checking in and sharing lessons he is learning, and we wanted to share them with you! Outline: 1. When a problem becomes real. 2. Changing ones experience of the circumstances. 3. Holding and honoring parts who feel sad, grief, worry and joy simultaneously. 4. Sometimes we need someone else. 5. Polarities- Life is hard and life is joyful 6. It is scary to be hopeful. 7. Holding the parts who hold the pain. Here is my favorite quote: "We are not asking the part to be hopeful. We are asking the system to bring comfort and connection to that part so its experience of the circumstance changes." WARNING - LANGUAGE35 years ago, the wacky directing trio (Zucker, Abrams, Zucker) behind Airplane and The Naked Gun gave us a pretty crazy story: a wealthy clothing tycoon plots to murder his heiress wife but then finds out that she is actually being held hostage….and hilarity ensues! Zero Hour! was released in 1957, and was the inspiration for Airplane!. By “inspiration,” I mean it took so much from it that the producers had to officially acquire the rights. This is the dialog script, with bolded lines where the dialog is identical between the two movies. In particular, the line: “The life of everybody aboard depends on just one thing: Finding someone back there who not only can fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.” was what prompted Abrams and the Zuckers’ to make Airplane!. http://www.rogermwilcox.com/zero_hour.html Mariel Boatlift https://www.nytimes.com/1980/05/11/archives/retarded-people-and-criminals-are-included-in-cuban-exodus-200.html Cuban flight https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1980/08/17/three-jetliners-hijacked-to-cuba/d099faa4-4dec-4776-908a-2651a65f30b5/

Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2021/01/controlling-epilepsy-with-diet-episode-1762 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS ROWING FOR EXERCISE In his youth, David did row. Then, he got out of it for a bit. He tried to squeeze it in, but it didn't last long for awhile. Vinnie rows a lot. This past year, he rowed 2 million meters. David has gotten back into rowing too. LOW-CARB HEALTH David didn't have a lot of weight to lose. However, he did have some issues that a keto diet fixed. Check out his book documenting this, My Unremarkable Brain. https://www.amazon.com/Unremarkable-Brain-Fat-Fueled-Adventure-Ketogenic/dp/163676536X The book features interviews from several luminaries (and Vinnie, too!). David has always been a writer. The luminary shows on this podcast really got David on board. NSNG® is simple, and he liked that he didn't have to track and there weren't a lot of rules. He has lost 20-30 lbs between his eating and his rowing. CONTROLLING EPILEPSY WITH DIET David suffers from epilepsy. He had been on medication and seizure free for 10 years. In 2017, his seizures came back while he was driving. It started with audio auras. After this, David looked more into keto. He is still on medication as well. Hearing about the Charlie Foundation and Jim Abrams made a difference for him. He reached out to the adult diet epilepsy center at Johns Hopkins. She prescribed a very low carb, NSNG® diet. This ketogenic diet has helped him greatly. He has been seizure free for the past 3 years! Diet should be an adjunct therapy, not a last resort. FAT DOC 2 IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES!
