(7:00) Anna relates a story of a woman who has a daughter with epilepsy. (9:00) She explains how the woman's daughter is affected by sugar. Anna offered up information about The Charlie Foundation, as the doctors the woman was taking her daughter to never mentioned dietary changes. Vinnie knows a person who has grand mal seizures and how badly it has affected his life. (15:00) The ketogenic diet has been used to treat epilepsy for over 100 years; however, with medications evolving, people have forgotten about it and its importance in health. What to Eat Eggs! They are easy, convenient, nutrient-dense, and are not just a “breakfast food”! (18:00) Meats: bacon (although Vinnie is not a fan of big company brands because they have a lot of additives). (23:00) Go to a real butcher, if possible. Anna explains the curing process, and they clarify information about nitrates and nitrites. Fattier cuts of meats are good, and Vinnie explains different fats. (29:00) Your body needs cholesterol—if you don't have enough, it will make it, that's how important it is. (32:00) Saturated fats are fine. Hydrogenated fats and Trans-fats are chemically created and damaging to your body. Seed oils are bad because because the process of extraction makes them toxic. (37:00) Cold-pressed are not typically bad because the extraction doesn't involve all the dangerous chemicals. Dr Cate Shanahan's book “” helps explain this. (39:00) Meats! Anna gives a ton of ideas about various types of meat. (41:00) Keep 4-7 days' worth of items in your freezer. That will mean that you always have something on hand. They switch to discussing vegetables. (44:00) They discuss recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables. What is a low-glycemic fruit? (47:00) What about dairy? (50:00) Full-fat dairy is good, like high-fat cheeses and yogurts. But for some people, too much dairy can hinder weight loss. (51:00) And what about eating nuts? Certain kinds are better than others because of their carb content. (52:00) Anna recommends eating a real meal to avoid feeling peckish or snacky all day. (54:30) Write to Anna and Vinnie and let them know if this was helpful! A Bonus Guide Know Your Italian Meats (with a pronunciation guide): “Gravy” – This one is for beginners. When an Italian mentions gravy, don't think of that light or dark brown sauce you have with your roast beef or Thanksgiving turkey. Gravy = red sauce. “Proshoot” does not refer to a marksman with a rifle or pistol but a favorite Italian meat – prosciutto. Walk into an Italian deli and ask for “proshuuto” and they'll instantly peg you as non-Italian. Ask for “proshoot,” and they'll peg you for a non-Italian trying to fake it! “Gabagool” is capicola (another Italian meat). Of the eight letters in capicola, only the a and the o make an appearance in “gabagool.” “Breejole” –  Braciole. “Panchetta” – Pancetta More News Don't forget to check out Serena Scott Thomas on Days Of Our Lives on the Peacock channel.  “Dirty Keto” is finally available on Amazon! (1:45) Dr. Steven Cunnane talks a bit about his book, The book discusses brain development in babies and the need for healthy fats. (6:00) It also discusses how various nutrients play the part in various ways in human evolution.  The big question Vinnie and Stephen discuss is: are you taking care of your brain? (15:00) Or are you letting it rot with what you are eating? Vinnie's interest in the brain comes from taking years of beatings playing football; as a result, he's curious about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). (16:00) Stephen says it's never too late to be able to make improvements; the question becomes "what can you do"? (21:25) Part of the challenge is the parameters given to doctors that make them hesitant to suggest low-carb. Mark Cucazzella is brought up as an example. The two discuss the movie "First Do No Harm", by Jim Abrams of the Charlie Foundation. (25:05) Charlie's doctors wanted to give him a lobotomy for his seizures; instead, they controlled his epilepsy with the ketogenic diet. They also discuss Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Steve Phinney, Tim Noakes, and others and what an important part they play in low-carb science. They switch to discuss certain limitations of the current healthcare systems. (29:50) Certain low-carb doctors are walking away from standard practice so they can actually practice health care and not sick care. ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Vinnie and Stephen also discuss what zinc and other minerals are optimal for the brain and how they help. (34:10) They discuss iodine, zinc, selenium, and certain deficiencies. They chat about the best sources of various nutrients. More is not always better, and Dr. Cunnane explains why. Don't over-intellectualize it: just eat sensibly. The conversation leads to a discussion about omega fatty acids, cholesterol, and ketones, and how the brain needs them. (46:30) There is still plenty to learn about cognitive decline and Alzheimer's; a lot of questions remain! (51:00) But there is more to it than diet and diabetes; social interaction, looking forward to things, and exercise seem to play a part as well in keeping a healthy brain. Conflicts of interest in science and medicine muddy up the waters of good information. (55:00) Dr. Cunnane has been awarded a research chair position at his university; as a result, the research will focus on ketotherapeutics. (1:01:30) They'll be studying ketogenic interventions of all sorts for mental illness, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Dr. Nevada Gray shares her story of recovering her health after suffering paralysis, incontinence, and more from Cauda Equina Syndrome. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/nevadaDr. Nevada Gray, the Paleo Pharmacist, suffered a horrible back injury in 2016. She was diagnosed with a rare condition named Cauda Equina Syndrome. She initially did not know if she would ever be able to walk again. In the years since, she has transformed her health and her life. Now, she is not only mobile, but she is thriving. With a spirit full of positivity, she shares her journey online and is helping many others. She is sharing her story of healing in this podcast episode. [0:50] Joe plugs his DiseaseReversals.com project. [1:50] Joe introduces Nevada. [2:50] Nevada details her health background. Several years ago, Nevada had started suffering from back pain. It started getting worse and worse, until eventually one day she couldn't even walk to her car after work; she needed a motorized cart. The next morning she woke up paralyzed from the waist down, in excruciating pain, incontinent, and with a lack of reflexes. She had to get to a high-level medical center. [5:40] The E.R. physician recognized there was something wrong with the lower part of her spinal cord (horse tail, the cauda equina). Nevada needed emergency surgery. [7:00] The emergency surgery was critical. It took place about 36-38 hours after acute symptom onset. [9:00] After waking up from surgery, what was going through Nevada's mind? She is very grateful for her neurosurgeon's words (the first she heard upon waking up after surgery): "I believe you can have a full recovery." (This reminds me of Brandon LaGreca's episode of You Cured What?!, where he discusses that it's important to avoid medical hexing.) [10:00] Nevada stayed in the hospital for a week after surgery. Her bowel and bladder function came back, but she did have residual numbness. She had physical therapy after that and had lots of support from family and friends. [11:30] Even though her surgeon told her not to Google her condition... Nevada Googled it! It was discouraging. But a friend encouraged her to find success stories online, and she came across Shawn Stevenson who had overcome a (different) back condition via nutrition and fitness. [13:00] Stevenson had come up with his own protocol, and Nevada decided to research her own protocol for her rare condition (Cauda Equina Syndrome). She found out about the neuroprotective potential of the ketogenic diet and found some rodent studies showing that a ketogenic diet may be beneficial for spinal injury. [13:55] Nevada found The Ketogenic Girl Vanessa Spina online and she helped Nevada adopt a well-formulated ketogenic diet. [14:30] She found Dr. Stuart McGill and his functional back training programs. She trained gradually: she made progressions from wheelchair to walker to cane. [15:35] She found the work of Dr. Joe Dispensa, who also healed from a back injury. He emphasizes techniques involving mindset and visualization. [16:30] Nevada created a vision board of what she wanted to accomplish. [17:45] In what timeframe did Nevada start noticing benefits from her multifaceted healing approach? [19:20] Nevada considered herself recovered after one year, and her foot drop resolved at about a year and a half. [20:35] Nevada had muscle spasms in her legs. She had to take Valium for the pain. It felt like she had an alien in her leg. She also tried foam rolling to deal with it. [21:40] "I wanted to just be able to feel like I was in control of my mind." [22:00] As of recording, Nevada is about five years out from her back injury. [22:40] What did Nevada put on her vision board? She wanted to return to work, to go to the gym, and she wanted to run in a 5K on Thanksgiving Day after her surgery. The 5K was an ambitious goal, but she completed it! [23:55] "It was something I felt like I had to do to prove to myself that I could do this and I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. So I was able to do that." [24:05] Nevada discusses the benefits she felt from guided meditation. It helped (and helps) focus and calm her mind. [25:10] Nevada did a lot of grounding, walking on the beach, feeling the earth beneath her feet. (She actually face-planted one of the first times she went to the beach after surgery!) [26:10] Nevada recommends guided meditations from Joe Dispensa and Michael Sealey. [26:45] How did Nevada's diet evolve over time? [27:30] Nevada struggled with asthma and allergies most of her life. And to avoid acute allergic reactions, she gravitated towards processed foods. [28:45] Nevada was diagnosed with PCOS in her early twenties. She now attributes that to the diet she ate. Her weight got up to about 220 pounds (at five-foot-four) upon graduation from pharmacy school. Then she learned about Robb Wolf and the Paleo diet because she heard it could help with allergies. [29:45] Between Paleo and getting a personal trainer, Nevada lost fifty pounds. [30:25] After her injury and adopting a ketogenic diet, she initially cycled through versions of the ketogenic diet as laid out by the Charlie Foundation. [31:00] Nevada found Maria Emmerich and Craig Emmerich and their book Keto Nevada started eating a more protein-focused ketogenic diet. She also learned about the PKD. She went to a Zero Carb diet, and she saw major positive results from this. Her PCOS resolved! [34:00] How have Nevada's allergies responded to her dietary changes? [35:30] Dr. Ted Naiman's P:E Ratio diet (Protein-to-energy ratio) is working very well for Nevada right now. [37:35] How have Nevada's friends and family responded to her transformation? [38:30] Nevada's mom has followed Nevada's lead. She adopted a Zero Carb, protein-prioritizing diet, and she lifts weights. She has followed that approach for 3 years (age 70 as of recording); she has lost 40 pounds, she has come off all medications, and she has started to reverse her osteoporosis! [39:25] A lot of Nevada's friends have adopted low carb diets. [40:30] What were some of the challenges on Nevada's journey to health? [42:25] A local pub actually named a meal after Nevada and put it on the menu: "The Nevada Carnivore Dinner" [44:45] Does Nevada consider herself cured of cauda equina? [47:00] Does Nevada have full feeling back throughout her lower body? [49:15] Now that she has improved her health, what is one thing Nevada enjoys doing that she couldn't do before? [51:40] Where can Nevada be found online? She can be found on Instagram, Twitter, and her blog. She is donating proceeds from affiliate links to a study being conducted by Dr. Chris Palmer. [53:30] Does Nevada have any message for anyone else who is suffering from cauda equina or any other rare diagnosis? [54:40] Nevada references her friend Tim Angelone, who walked across Europe after suffering from cauda equina; hear his story on a podcast with Nevada and Chris Donohue here. [55:20] Nevada emphasizes the importance of human connection.

Jennifer shares her story of reversing epilepsy, anxiety, and insomnia: going from decades of seizures to being seizure-free for over 3.5 years. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/jennifer[1:35] Jennifer shares her health background, which includes seizures since the age of 12. Her seizures are partial seizures, not grand mal seizures. [3:00] Jennifer was actually diagnosed with epilepsy in her 20s. Jennifer was put on a slew of medications. [4:05] Jennifer was already taking the maximum dosage of Keppra for seizure control (it was not working; she was still having seizures) when her doctor recommended upping the dose. Also, she was on a bunch of other medications to control horrible side effects (anxiety, insomnia): she was even on SSRIs. [4:45] Jennifer had read about the ketogenic diet for epilepsy and had brought that idea up to her neurologist several times. Her neurologist always shot the idea down. [5:20] When her neurologist upped Jennifer's meds again (in 2017, at age 41), Jennifer researched the ketogenic diet for epilepsy further via The Charlie Foundation. She went out and got groceries which matched the macronutrient requirements (80% fat, 15% protein, 5% carbohydrate). She started eating that way. [6:50] Jennifer typically had 6-10 seizures per month. Since starting the ketogenic diet (over 3.5 years ago as of recording), she has not had another seizure. [9:40] Jennifer weighed almost 290 pounds when she started keto. [12:25] Jennifer lays out a lot of specific ways her life has gotten better since adopting a ketogenic diet. This even includes shedding aphasia and improved short-term memory. [15:15] Jennifer weighed 287 pounds prior to starting keto; now she typically weighs between 127 and 130 pounds. [16:15] Jennifer's doc not only recommended more and more meds, but she had also recommended a surgery to remove part of her brain!! Her medical care staff would have removed part of her brain before recommending a change in diet. [20:15] After never supporting keto, Jennifer even found out later that her care system even had a ketogenic nutrition specialist on staff. And still they did not support it. [22:15] What foods make up the bulk of Jennifer's ketogenic diet? [26:40] After 2 years of a largely traditional ketogenic diet (approximately 80% fat, 15% protein, 5% carbs), Jennifer tweaked her diet to increase protein. She now eats more of a Modified Atkins Diet approach (approximately 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% carbs). [32:30] How did Jennifer's anxiety and insomnia change after adopting a ketogenic diet? [35:00] Jennifer got into powerlifting. She turned her addiction to food into an addiction to endorphins. [36:05] "Between the lowered anxiety and the improved sleep, I'm like, 'This is my life now. I'm keeping this forever.'" [37:05] How did Jennifer's family and friends respond to her transformation? [38:50] Jennifer's best friend started keto two years ago and got rid of her migraines. (Notably, her friend had been taking Topamax, which Jennifer used to take for seizures.) [40:10] Jennifer's mom started keto in July 2019. She was able to come off hypertension and asthma medications (she had chronic asthma). Another of Jennifer's friends has adopted a ketogenic diet and gotten rid of PCOS symptoms. [42:40] On her journey to health, what have some of the challenges been? [45:50] Now that she has improved her health, what is one thing Jennifer enjoys doing that she couldn't do before? [48:35] Where can Jennifer be reached? She is active on Twitter at http://twitter.com/KetoHiking and via email at ketohiking@gmail.com [50:00] For learning more about a ketogenic approach to treating epilepsy, Jennifer recommends The Charlie Foundation, this Johns Hopkins website, and Matthew's Friends.

Despite 8 years ago having a golf-ball sized brain tumor (anaplastic astrocytoma), Andrew Scarborough shares how he is now in the best health of his life. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/scarborough[1:45] Andrew provides his health history. He was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma after suffering a brain hemorrhage on a train in 2013. (It is 2020 at recording time). [3:00] Leading in to the brain hemorrhage, he had been feeling symptoms, including migraines. He had been stressed so he chalked the migraines and other symptoms up to the stress. [5:00] On top of the migraines, Andrew was also suffering from focal seizures, runny noses, and muscular fatigue. [6:00] What diet had Andrew been eating before (which he thought were perfect to manage his strange symtpoms)? He was eating a "rainbow", "Mediterranean", "plant-based" diet with some occasional oily fish. [7:30] Andrew was in good athletic shape (low body fat, lots of lean tissue) prior to his brain hemorrhage. [9:30] Leading up to the incident on the train, Andrew had been suffering from some of the aforementioned symptoms for about a year. They had gotten so bad that he could barely cope a couple months before the hemorrhage. [10:20] Initially his tumor was misdiagnosed as a cavernous hemangioma. [11:10] Andrew was told that they were going to take out the cavernous hemangioma (that's what they thought it was at the time). Andrew was suffering from seizures which were causing brain damage and also it was leading to other injuries such as a shoulder dislocation. [12:10] They were not able to remove the entire tumor and the resulting histopathology report showed that it was not truly a cavernous hemangioma; it was an anaplastic astrocytoma. [13:35] Andrew adopted a ketogenic diet to manage the debilitating seizures he kept having, which were keeping him from being able to even leave the house. Also, he was on medications which were making him feel like a zombie. [14:30] Andrew had learned about ketogenic diets in 2012 (just before his diagnosis) while studying for his Master's Degree in Nutritional Therapy. Ketogenic diets have been in use for children's epilepsy for about 100 years. Andrew was skeptical it could help him beyond seizure control but he bought the book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease anyway. [15:50] Andrew found out that some traditional ketogenic foods were still causing seizures for him. [18:30] Andrew also leveraged the work of the UK group Matthew's Friends, which promote ketogenic diets (especially for epileptic children). [20:00] Andrew noticed he had issues with dairy and with a lot of plant foods, especially ones containing salicylates. He ended up cutting out all carbohydrates. [21:50] Andrew focused on eating nutrient-dense animal foods (carnivore diet) and on improving his fatty acid ratio (lower Omega-6, increase Omega-3). [23:50] Through his nutrient-dense animal-food diet, Andrew was able to establish a therapeutic zone of blood ketones and blood sugar and completely manage his seizures. Eventually he was able to come off all medications. [26:00] Andrew also found boswellic acid to be an effective supplement to reduce seizure activity. Likewise, frankincense essential oil under the tongue helped Andrew rapidly mitigate low-level seizure activity when a seizure came on. He also found that magnesium chloride spray was able to help. [30:30] What was the timeline like for Andrew's health improvements take? [31:50] Andrew talks a bit about gadolinium contrast agents for his cancer scans (for visualizing tumors in the body). He describes that gadolinium may be more toxic than conventionally accepted. [32:40] Over time, Andrew noticed that the tumor activity and/or brain brain damage was getting better over time (in about a year). And his doctors had told him that would not happen. And over time he was able to include more foods back into his ketogenic diet (including some plant foods). His strokelike symptoms and photosensitivity got markedly better. [34:30] Andrew felt better within a year. And each year, he keeps feeling better than the year before. "At the moment I feel like I'm in my very best health." [35:10] Andrew can now control his symptoms without being on a strict carnivorous 4:1 fat-to-protein-and-carbohydrate ratio diet. [37:10] What was Andrew's initial prognosis? At first they misdiagnosed his tumor as a cavernous hemangioma so they weren't worried about the tumor; instead his medical providers were worried about the seizures he was having consistently. [39:35] Andrew's brain tumor was the size of a golf ball. [40:50] Andrew lost speech ability and movement ability on the right side of his face for a while. However, he has regained both speech and movement! [42:30] "What isn't speculative is the resolution of these horrific symptoms that I'd suffered." "I realized over time how powerful the things that I've implemented have been because if I diverge from my approach to managing the epilepsy even a little bit, I experience seizures again. So I just carry on doing what I'm doing and I don't experience anything." [43:50] How has Andrew's doctor responded? [44:45] After changing hospitals, Andrew became his new doctor's "human guinea pig". (Note: Andrew now hosts a podcast named The Human Guinea Pig Project.) [48:55] What have the challenges been on Andrew's journey to health? [51:00] Does Andrew have any recommended resources for people interested in learning more about his approach to healing from cancer? He recommends the book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease, the Charlie Foundation, Matthew's Friends, Dominic D'Agostino on Twitter, Thomas Seyfried, and Brent Wagner (who researches gadolinium toxicity). Also, Andrew has his own podcast: The Human Guinea Pig Project. [52:10] Andrew discusses how gadolinium is a highly toxic metal often used in cancer scans as a contrast agent. This could be making the cancer worse. This is not well enough known and conventional practitioners downplay any risk, but Andrew knows there are real risks with it. Andrew is even writing a book on this subject; he hopes to have it finished by the end of 2020. [58:50] Does Andrew consider himself cured of his conditions? [59:40] Andrew has relaxed his diet (still keto); he eats more plants now. He still suffers symptoms if he eats too many carbohydrates. But even after adding some plants back in, he can keep his blood glucose low and ketones in a therapeutic range. Andrew also finds great benefit in long morning walks; he often even gets a euphoric feeling during these fasted morning walks. [1:03:05] Andrew also tried some hyperbaric oxygen therapy. [1:08:15] Andrew has a blog: My brain cancer story. Specifically, the blog post discussing "air break" technique is: https://mybraincancerstory.blogspot.com/2016/02/epilepsy-and-hyperbaric-oxygen-therapy.html [1:10:20] Now that he has improved his health, what's one thing Andrew enjoys doing that he couldn't do before?

Can the Ketogenic diet cure mental illness?  Has it really been used to cure epilepsy?  Is it safe?  How does it work?  We answer all of these questions in this conversation with Dr. Chris Palmer. Dr. Chris Palmer is one of the world’s leading researcher on the use of ketogenic therapies for treating neurological disorders.  He has done extensive research on the intersection of psychiatric disorders and metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammation).  There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about the ketogenic diet and therapies.  Dr. Palmer dispels these myths in our conversation. In this conversation Dr. Palmer explains the ketogenic diet, how it impacts your body, what it can and can’t do, and how it can impact not only your physical health, but your mental health as well.  We took a deep dive into the connection between the gut microbiome, mental health, and mental illness in this episode as well as how to use the ketogenic diet to reduce symptoms from psychiatric disorders. Connect with Dr. Palmer and learn more about his work via these links: Dr. Palmer on LinkedIn Dr. Palmer’s Website Articles by Dr. Palmer Medical Journal Publications by Dr. Palmer Extensive Research on Ketogenic Diet for Metabolic Conditions and Mental Illness   Other resources mentioned in this episode: The Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Therapies Virta Clinic – Keto diet cures diabetes and other health benefits For weight loss keto, learn more from Dr. Dom D’Agostino Keto News on Epilepsy.com edited by Dr. Eric Kossoff from Johns Hopkins Dr. Jong Rho at UC San Diego on diet and neurological disorders SOME OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT: What is the connection between the ketogenic diet and mental health? For many years, we have known there is quite a bit of overlap between treating epilepsy and treating numerous other psychiatric disorders.  Many of the drugs used to treat seizures are also used to treat other mental illnesses.  Likewise, since we know the ketogenic diet has been proven to reduce seizures and symptoms of epilepsy, it makes sense that just like the drugs used for epilepsy, that there could be other psychiatric uses for ketogenic therapies. The ketogenic diet has been around for about 100 years (first described by a physician in 1921).  It was first developed for the purpose of treating epilepsy.  We have a tremendous amount of evidence that the ketogenic diet is a safe and effective treatment for epilepsy today as proven by numerous clinical trials and clinical cases of positive outcomes.  Keto is a very common treatment for epilepsy today. The most “famous” story of it working is the case of Charlie Abrahams who, at 11 months of age was experiencing multiple seizures per day.  After many medications didn’t work, the ketogenic diet stopped his seizures and he has been seizure-free and medication free for over 30 years.  Why are ketogenic therapies not used widely as medical treatment for mental illness today? Most people are not aware of the abundance of evidence in favor of this diet or the basic science of it.  This diet has been tested in randomized controlled trials in people with epilepsy. Just the idea of using a “diet” that many consider a “fad” or even “unhealthy” to treat something as serious as a mental illness seems to cause skepticism with most people. In the field of dietary science, there is a lot of disagreement about what is healthy and not healthy.  There are also endless “frivolous” or “quack-ish” claims out there.  So, when people hear that Keto can cure seizures, people assume it’s another quack claim. Why do so many people struggle to do the ketogenic diet? Skeptical people – Many people are skeptical about this diet because of the number and volume of naysayers out there.  A lot of people say this diet is bad for you or will kill you and that this diet goes against the grain of everything we have been taught is a healthy diet.  However, we now know that much of what we have been taught is a healthy diet, isn’t actually healthy and is the result of food industry lobbying and bad science. Immediate negative reaction – The 1st week or two of this diet is extraordinarily difficult to endure for most people.  Your body is going through a dramatic shift in fuel sources from sugar and carbohydrates to mostly fats.  This is a big change that effects almost every cell in the human body.  This causes people to often feel worse at first which makes people give up a few days into it.  This is likely why so few of the 1,300 at Johns Hopkins finished the trial. We need clinics and clinicians who understand this diet, its complications, the dynamics of the keto adaptation phase, and understand the “art” of doing this diet in order to increase adherence so we can complete more of these studies in a meaningful way and help more people. What are the obstacles preventing broader use of ketogenic therapies for psychiatric disorders? Obstacle 1: Skepticism about a “diet” as an effective treatment for a serious disorder. Obstacle 2:  A lot of people can’t do this diet.  There aren’t that many professionals, especially in mental health, who fully understand the diet and how to get people to do it appropriately or how long it takes to work.  It’s a very difficult diet in the first couple weeks.  Takes a while to work, just like any medication would and often people feel worse before they feel better so they give up too early because there aren’t enough well-trained doctors who can oversee the keto-adaptation phase of the diet. Can this diet “cure” mental illness? Cure is a strong word and one that Dr. Palmer isn’t comfortable using here.  He explains that significant, if not total, symptom reduction is possible in many cases and gives several anecdotal examples in our conversation. Dr. Palmer explains that in the world of epilepsy, people typically fall into three buckets when we monitor reaction to treatment: 1 – Symptoms reduced 2 – Cure – or complete resolution 3 – Treatment did not work Among the people who get a positive benefit from ketogenic treatment (2 of the 3 buckets), m any of those people are able to come off of the diet after the right amount of time on it, and maintain many of the benefits they received from the diet.  Charlie Abraham is the perfect analogy here of what complete resolution can look like for someone with epilepsy. Is the ketogenic diet safe?  How long can someone be on the diet? Dr. Palmer explains that there are numerous variations of the ketogenic diet, and there are multiple use cases as well.  The answer to questions like these depends on which version of the diet and what your reason is for a ketogenic diet.  There are weight loss versions, medical versions, and some are more restrictive than others as far as what you can consume. If someone is having 20 seizures per day and they are completely disabled from living a normal life, and a ketogenic therapy can control their disability, then the consequences of taking the diet (some perceived, and some real) are worth it when you consider that having sever epilepsy for your entire life is far worse than any potential negative side effect of the keto diet. Is it true that people are curing diabetes with the keto diet? The Virta Clinic is the best source for information here.  They have published research on trials they have conducted where they put 300 people through a weight loss version of the keto diet and found that many of the people who had diabetes were able to stop taking all diabetic medication.  Check out their research here. Are exogenous ketones (supplements) good, bad, helpful? The ketogenic diet as many effects on the body. The primary mechanism of action in the keto diet is a change in gut microbiome. The food you eat during this diet, and the way your stomach digests that food can profoundly change the gut microbiome.  Just taking a supplement or an exogenous ketone avoids a lot of those gut microbe reactions that drive positive benefits for the body and brain. According to Dr. Palmer, there is no evidence that exogenous ketones (supplements) have an impact on mental disorders or epilepsy.  That’s not to say they can’t and won’t work, but there has yet to be any real evidence through controlled trials to prove the connection. If I want to do the ketogenic diet correctly, how do I get started? If you want to use the keto diet to controls symptoms of a psychiatric disorder then you should seek the help of a professional to guide you through the diet, monitor you, help you, and ensure adherence in a healthy way.  Here is where you can start your research if you are trying to use the diet for one of these issues: Epilepsy – go to a neurologist and Keto diet center for help properly executing the diet Diabetes – The Virta Clinic is a good place to start.  They are a remote / virtual treatment program that works with your PCP to help you with the diet.  There are others like them out there, so do your own homework on what may be best for you. Treat Mental Illness – You need to work with psychiatrist.  SMIs are dangerous life-threatening disorders.  This diet is a very powerful intervention (the medical version is far more than a diet; it is a medication).  You need to be monitored by someone who knows what they are doing and can help you navigate the negative side effects in the early days of keto-adaptation. Can the keto diet cure other diseases like Cancer and Alzheimer’s? There is current research ongoing about the impacts of the ketogenic diet on cancer treatment.  There have been no cases where the keto diet cures cancer or removes a tumor, but there has been evidence that the diet can slow tumor growth.  There are currently trials underway to analyze this. Some people have wondered if we could treat Alzheimer’s with the keto diet.  This is a hot topic in the research community and is currently an emerging field.  There is some evidence that Alzheimer’s relates to problems with glucose metabolism in the brain.  If that’s the case, then changing the brain’s fuel source could logically have an impact on the disease.  The keto diet provides an alternate fuel source to brain cells, so if those cells are not getting enough fuel from glucose, then the change to a different fuel source could be one of the solutions.  Some people are referring to this as “type 3” diabetes today. There are some animal trials going on right now with regards to the keto diet and Alzheimer’s.  One of those is taking place at Johns Hopkins and one at another university.  Both trials show that a keto diet results in improvement in biomarkers for Alzheimer’s, improved cognition in about 6 weeks, and improved energy levels in about 6 weeks.  There is much more to learn on this topic What do the naysayers of the keto diet say?  Who is working against the Keto diet? There are a lot of people who dislike the ketogenic diet.  Many people say it isn’t good for you or has negative side effects or that it defies basic nutrition guidelines. The primary voices of naysayers are medical professionals that truly believe that saturated fats are toxic and will kill people by causing strokes if they eat a ketogenic diet.  These medical professionals have been educated this way by the system and taught these concepts their whole career and failed to ever question the science, or the data to come up with their own thoughts.  That’s what Dr. Palmer has done and why he has come to the conclusions that he has. A lot of medical professionals (who are good people, who have a goal of saving lives) truly believe this diet can harm people.  Dr. Palmer disagrees with these doctors and is vocal about this because he welcomes an open dialogue about the science and the data for the advancement of public health.  A great resource to begin doing your own homework here is the Virta Clinic research on the diet. In addition to these doctors, there are others who oppose the keto diet as well.  This includes the broader plant-based dietary movement.  Some people don’t eat animals for ethical or religious reasons.  Other people prefer plant-based foods because they think that raising animals for consumption is bad for the environment.  Dr. Palmer isn’t arguing for or against any of those positions, but rather just stating what opposing views are out there.  One point we would like to make here is that an obese person, with multiple co-morbid problems is having a profoundly more negative impact on the environment in m any other ways than they would be having if they were eating animal-based food.  Dr. Palmer explains this in the conversation. Beth Zupec-Kania, RDN, CD, noted ketogenic diet and nutrition expert, lecturer, and top consultant for The Charlie Foundation, provides extensive information on good nutrition and how the ketogenic diet helps fight certain diseases. Nutrition expert, Beth Zupec-Kania, is a registered and certified dietitian and nutritionist. She has amassed over 25 years of experience as a consultant and coach for medical professionals, patients, and individuals, on the power of nutritional ketosis for combatting select neurological disorders, and certain types of cancers and metabolic-based health problems. Zupec-Kania has been associated with The Charlie Foundation for many years where she continues to spread the word on the power of nutrition and keto for everyone. Her impressive resume, global reputation, and research in the field are but three of the many reasons why over 250 medical centers have attended her seminars and workshops for medical professionals at The Charlie Foundation. Zupec-Kania's primary work is promoting ketogenic diet therapy as a means to help children with inherited metabolic disorders. Additionally, she seeks to offer solutions and nutritional assistance for anyone who is required to exist on a blenderized diet, which is a diet of foods and liquids that are thinned in a blender for those with special conditions. Zupec-Kania works with her patients to make a personalized plan that is tailored to their specific nutritional and medical needs. The nutrition guru recounts her motivation for devoting her life to nutrition and health. Zupec-Kania's father was a cancer patient and she witnessed the harsh chemo and radiation sessions that her father endured that seemingly offered little or no help at all in regard to his condition. Motivated to help others and find a better way, at college prep school she declared her area of study as nutrition and her journey began.  Zupec-Kania discusses the ketogenic diet's rise at the Mayo Clinic, first introduced as a method for treating epilepsy patients. Zupec-Kania states that keto was also being studied at about the same time in Germany, as a treatment for cancer. And after many years, the medical community is now beginning to accept keto as a means of treating select types of cancer.  Zupec-Kania outlines the various beneficial mechanisms of a ketogenic diet. She discusses cancer and states that it is an inflammatory process. As the ketogenic diet has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect it is a good option for people with certain types of cancers. She explains how glucose feeds tumor cells and how a ketogenic diet can help to cut off cancer cells' energy supply. Zupec-Kania remembers patients with whom she has worked and recounts stories of those who saw improvement after beginning, and sticking with, their ketogenic diet. She states that while the power of keto is obvious, unfortunately, many doctors and healthcare professionals are still not aware of the benefits it may provide to their patients. Zupec-Kania outlines her process, as she works with patients to devise a tailored strategy for their degree of ketosis, which takes into account all their medical factors, goals, and general issues. She provides detailed information about exogenous ketones and benefits they may provide to some individuals. And Zupec-Kania explains medium-chain fats that are ketotic producing, such as coconut oil and MCT oil, etc.  Zupec-Kania discusses cancer patients who have experienced dramatic improvements, sometimes even putting their cancer into remission. Results are varied, of course, but most patients express, at minimum, feeling better overall when on a ketogenic diet. Zupec-Kania stresses the importance of starting early, however, and not waiting, for an early start to a ketogenic diet can sometimes have a profound impact on certain diseases and conditions.

Today we have the mighty Dom D’Agostino who is at the forefront of the science behind why low carb diets work and specifically the more extreme form of a low carb diet you’ve probably heard a lot about lately - the ketogenic diet. It can be used therapeutically with the help of doctors to treat and reverse diseases like type 2 diabetes and epilepsy. It can also help the everyday person lose a lot of weight if done correctly. It’s not a fad diet - although it currently could be considered a fad just because technically it is very popular right now and might get less popular in the future. It is however quite the opposite as our ancestors have likely been eating in a similar way for millions of years depending on the geography, time of year, and current world climate. I’d like to apologize for not checking the audio while I recorded - there was a effects knob on my old school mixer I use that got turned on and it put some sort of concert hall echo effect on my voice. The indiegogo campaign is going well - thanks for the support. Again - I’m not trying to make any money off this film (and I surely won’t), just break even and fund the rest of post production. So watch the trailer and preorder copy to support us. http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   Show notes Dom’s many conferences and travels spreading info on his research What research he does Helping people understand the benefits of a ketogenics diet Fasting, ketosis, the military, and seizures Neurodegenerative diseases and burning ketones Evolutionary function of ketones How to not be slave to sugar Choosing fat as your energy source makes it easier to control your hunger, keep your brain happy, and eat fewer calories Don’t have to go high fat Teens with type 2 diabetes eating tons of carbs Carbohydrate intolerance Intermittent Fasting Cancer as a metabolic disease The Warburg Effect Glucose, ketones, and cancer and how the ketogenic diet helps prevent tumor growth More stuff on ketones and the future of beta hydroxybutyrate as an endogenous metabolite The Charlie Foundation and curing epilepsy and seizures with the ketogenic diet https://charliefoundation.org The Metabolic Health Summit in January 2019 in Los Angeles https://metabolichealthsummit.com   Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post   Film site: http://FoodLies.org Podcast site: http://Peak-Human.com Youtube: http://youtube.com/c/foodlies     Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg   Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/

Someone who has deep knowledge in the subject is the NSNG trademarked creator himself. Vinnie Tortorich who returns to co-host the show! We also talk about topics and best practices learned from his 4 years of Podcasting. On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="02:01"] Some of the biggest things Vinnie has learned thanks to Podcasting. [spp-timestamp time="08:56"] The annoyance of popups and trademarking NSNG. [spp-timestamp time="12:13"] Pure Vitamin Club [spp-timestamp time="13:48"] Fruit and Vegetables sourced locally vs shipped in. [spp-timestamp time="17:37"] B12 Product from Pure Vitamin Club. [spp-timestamp time="22:27"] LIVETHEFUEL Resource Page. Purity of the messaging and promoting products you believe in. [spp-timestamp time="26:50"] Villa Cappelli (https://villacappelli.com/) Olive Oil. [spp-timestamp time="28:09"] Vinnie tells us about some Italian runners that came from their version of the special forces who ran a marathon across a desert on just olive oil. [spp-timestamp time="29:58"] Takes years of training to be able to run marathons, or anything effectively for that matter. You have to put in the reps. Start small and work up to it. [spp-timestamp time="31:12"] Vinnie has studied at a much higher level than most personal trainers. Vinnie studied at Medical School of Tulane University (http://www2.tulane.edu/som/) in New Orleans, Louisiana. [spp-timestamp time="33:02"] Doctors, most only know drugs and not true health or nutrition. [spp-timestamp time="35:33"] Finding a Ketogenic lifestyle. Vinnie notes that NSNG is not a Ketogenic diet. Don't just jump in. Go spend a week or two eating cleaner and the most important part is to start reading and listening to properly understand the lifestyle. It will make the leap easier. [spp-timestamp time="38:24"] The Charlie Foundation and the ketogenic influence in health to battle epilepsy. [spp-timestamp time="43:04"] "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink." All you can do is consistently show them the path. [spp-timestamp time="47:59"] The bad four letter word. Diet is a short term mindset. We gain and lose weight based on hormones. Vinnie explains about the hormones that tell you that you are full and the ones that make you feel hungry. [spp-timestamp time="55:14"] Eat yourself healthy rather than taking the easy option of popping a pill. [spp-timestamp time="56:45"] We have become a 'Want it now society' and see "the pill" as the magic bullet. A pharmacy is just a temporary band-aid. This year in the United States, over 22,000 people will be diagnosed with a primary brain or spinal tumor. Of these, more than 13,000, many of them younger than 21 years old, will die of their disease. New treatment modalities are critical in the battle against cancer. She is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, Society for Neuro-Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Women in Cancer Research, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Scheck’s work consists mainly of translational research to develop novel adjuvant therapies for the treatment of brain tumors. Joyce welcomes Jim Abrahams to the show, who is an American film writer, director, and producer. Mr. Abrahams is also the co-founder, and executive director of the Charlie Foundation, which was established in 1994 in order to raise awareness about the ketogenic diet as a treatment for childhood epilepsy. The modern success of the diet has led to new demands on the medical community. In order to meet these demands, the Charlie Foundation has expanded its priorities to include educational programs for dietitians and neurologists as well as support for clinicians and researchers working to perfect its administration.
