JM Fortier: Farms For Food Sovereignty

Real Organic Podcast

#223: JM Fortier shares his vision for farming as a pathway to food sovereignty. From his home in Quebec, JM has helped lead a growing movement of small-scale, soil-based farmers working to reconnect communities with their food. Through his work with the Market Gardener Institute, he's offering tools, structure, and encouragement to a new generation hungry for change. This is a grounded and inspiring look at how living soil, real skills, and deep purpose can rebuild the food system from the roots up.https://realorganicproject.org/jm-fortier-farms-for-food-sovereignty-223JM Fortier is a farmer, educator, and author from Quebec, Canada, who also appears on a weekly television show. He is known for promoting a culture that replicates small-scale diversified farms that rely on market gardening strategies (direct sales of cash crops to community members) and human-powered growing practices. In the late spring of 2024, JM and his fried Chris Moran launched the Market Gardener Podcast:https://themarketgardener.com/podcast/You can learn more about JM and his many adventures here:https://www.en.jeanmartinfortier.com/The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

#180:  In our first-ever podcast swap, we are sharing the interview that kicked off JM Fortier's pilot season of The Market Gardener Podcast. JM invited our co-director Dave Chapman to visit him in-person in Quebec, for a lengthy deep dive into the origins of Real Organic Project and why this work is needed more now than ever. Is this work about food and the food system, or something deeper? And how much should farmers and eaters be involved in spreading the word and working to find solutions?  As always, you can expect to learn something new from both of these deep-thinking farmers. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Fans!https://www.realorganicproject.org/1000-real-fans/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/The 3rd annual interactive Real Organic Symposium takes place LIVE - on Sunday Jan 30th and Sunday Feb 6th - from 3 to 5pm EST! #009: JM Fortier brings his passion for small-scale, ecology-first farming to this discussion about what motivates growers big and small to scale up, and what's missing from those conversations (nutrients! community! meaning and purpose!). Jean-Martin (JM) Fortier has made a name for himself as a proponent of a small-scale, human-powered, and ecologically-sustainable style of "market gardening" that lends itself to cooperativism, community building, and visible resiliency within local food systems. Together with his wife Maude-Heléne Desrosches, he founded Les Jardins de Grelinette (Broadfork Gardens) in Quebec. He is the author of The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming, the educator behind the online course The Market Gardener's Masterclass, the star of the popular Quebecois reality television show Les Fermiers (The Farmers), and the operator of Quebec's La Ferme des Quatre Temps, a diversified ecological CSA farm that promotes biodiversity and soil growth. JM serves on the Real Organic Project's Advisory Board. It is Wednesday, December 16, 2020, and I have the most amazing guest on the line, the world renowned gardener, he's going to rock us with his new venture https://www.growers.co/us/ (Growers & Co.)here today to talk to us ishttps://www.themarketgardener.com/ (JM Fortier), welcome to the show JM!   1m 21s JM Fortier Well, it's so exciting. I feel like there's fireworks coming out. Hi. I'm so happy to be there. Oh my goodness. Well, I am so happy to have you here and to talk about everything you have going on your new venture withhttps://www.growers.co/us/ (Growers & Co.) your, I love the t-shirt that says small-scale farmers are changing the world. And I hope we're going to talk about that a little bit today and just, but I do have a ton of new listeners since the last time you were here. So just in case they were like, who is this? I don't know how they could, but if they are, do you, what, tell them a little bit about yourself.   2m 1s JM Fortier Sure. So, so people call me JM, so I go by JM and I started a small organic farm we're in 2004. So that was a while back. And then that farm, the fame to claim of that farm was that we were farming an acre and a half, which we still do today. And we use no tractor. We use hand tools and then we go to farmer's market and then we have CSA and we deliver it to the local food co-op and we've been able to make a living farming, this small piece of land for, you know, almost two decades now. https://amzn.to/37ui7Z7 () The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic FarmingAnd eventually I wrote a book calledhttps://amzn.to/37ui7Z7 ( the market gardener), which described the strategies that we use to make the farm, you know, productive and also financially viable.   2m 48s JM Fortier And https://amzn.to/37ui7Z7 (the market gardener) is now translated in 10 languages and it's sold over 2000 and 200,000 copies. And a lot of people know me for this, you know, they've read the book and I think it has helped them just figure out proper ways to start a small farm or just like learn new gardening, gardening practices, or learn about tools, new tools that they perhaps didn't know existed and how to use them. And so that was, that was kind of when people started to know a little bit of who I am, because I was promoting the book and people are reading my work.   3m 26s JackieMarie Beyer And so many of my guests who are market gardeners are following your steps. Exactly. And they're talking about their success. I mean, I heard about you from https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/podcast-2/45-joyce-pinson-friends-drift-inn-appalachia-kentucky/ (Joyce Pinson) back, I think in episode 45. And she was just raving about you back then. And I immediately bought the bucket. My husband has poured through it and just we've put some of the things like he's desperately trying to build a pond and just, we just have a little mini farm. But 200,000 copies! I went to ghostwriter school this summer to learn how to write. I'm trying to write this book called Rockstar Millennial. And he said that like a self-published book usually sells 300 and a traditionally published book sells 2000. You are 100 times at 200,000 and that's because you are changing the world and teaching people, how small farmers should he want to touch on that? How are small farmers changing the world? Small scale farmers.   4m 20s JM Fortier Yeah. Well, you know, that's wow. I've met, you know, I've been very fortunate because, because of the book, you know, I didn't, first of all, at first I was kind of touring. I was invited to talk about my work and talk about the books. So every time that happens, I go and visit farms and visit farmers. And that was in Canada. Then it was in the US, then it was in Europe. Then it was in Australia and New... Support this podcast

What is The Looney Farm and what is their unique approach to the business? Carrie Chlebanowski of The Looney Farm (a Certified Naturally Grown farm), joins us today to tell us all about her and her husband Joe’s farming operation. Located in central Oklahoma near Oklahoma City, The Looney Farm started their little homestead in February of 2015 learning to raise and grow as much of their own food as possible. After closely studying market garden legends, they transitioned their homestead into a very small, but functional market garden farm. Spring of 2019 brought a 4x expansion in their farming operations, and they are now growing a wide variety of premium produce for the greater Oklahoma City metro area. As you all know, every farming operation is different, and The Looney Farm is certainly no exception. Join us today to hear all about Carrie’s unique approach to the farm biz!   You’ll hear: What’s currently going on at The Looney Farm 1:33 How much farmland The Looney Farm is working with and what kind of crops they are growing 2:24 Why Carrie decided to become a farmer 3:27 What the typical day looks like on The Looney Farm 5:41 Some strategies Carrie uses for handling the heat 7:57 How Carrie handles task management 9:21 The hardest thing Carrie has done as a farmer 12:15 How The Looney Farm communicates with their customers 14:01 About the various investments Carrie and Joe made before starting The Looney Farm 15:19 Who Carrie’s mentors in farming are 19:45 What systems Carrie would put in place sooner if she could go back in time 21:18 About Carrie’s team 23:48 What Carrie’s children’s roles are on the farm 27:10 About The Looney Farm’s key marketing tactics 29:28 The biggest mistake Carrie sees newer farmers making 35:11 How Carrie achieved the right mentality to start a farm 37:27 Carrie’s favorite farming tool 39:52 Where you can find out more about Carrie and The Looney Farm 45:03   About the Guest:Carrie is a 44 year-old reformed suburbanite who moved with her family to their 10 acre farm in February 2015. In previous lives she owned an on-location portrait business and worked in special education. Initially set up as a homestead, her family dabbled in pastured pork and poultry before diving in full gusto to market gardening in 2018. In an effort to gain the knowledge of growing vegetables and building a new ag business, she invested in intensive trainings and workshops with internationally recognized market farmers such as JM Fortier, Michael Kilpatrick, and Ray Tyler. Since then, she has made it her goal to grow the best quality, most nutrient dense vegetables possible, and in that effort The Looney Farm became the first Certified Naturally Grown farm in the OKC metro in early 2019. She hopes to learn more regenerative practices to incorporate into their model of growing in the coming seasons. Building healthy soil is one of the top priorities. Carrie and her husband Joe look forward to working together full-time soon, and find even more avenues to serve the OKC metropolitan communities through the farm. The Looney Farm currently sells at the two OKC farmers markets, a Buyers club style CSA, and through a locally sourced grocery store.   Resources:Website - www.thelooneyfarm.com Facebook - https://facebook.com/thelooneyfarm Instagram - https://instagram.com/the_looney_farm

Today's episode is a BEST OF episode, which is a replay of a previously aired episode.  Enjoy! FSFS #104   When it comes to this world of farming small, what is this world? Is it a bunch of small farms each operating independently? For the most part, I think the answer is yes. Given that, what's the next step. Is it more small farms operating independently or are those small farms growing to be larger small farmers? Now I am not talking 1.5-acre farms scaling to 100 acres, I am talking about 1.5-acre farms scaling to 10 acres. If small farms do that, what does that look like, both for this world of farming small and for each independently operated farm? Is that scale manageable on a people-powered bio-intensive level? Or does this style of farming not scale? It's a question being asked by one of the leaders in this movement, JM Fortier. A few years ago JM Fortier left his 1.5-acre farm behind to start working on an experimental 10-acre farm to test the idea and validity of scaling these types of farming methods. It's a project which has produced some answers, but one which has also produced a lot of questions, some of which are the focus of our show today. It's all about the future of market gardening in this episode with farmer JM Fortier.   Follow Diego on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diegofooter Listen to past episodes at https://www.paperpot.co/podcast Increase farm efficiency with the Paperpot Transplanter and Other Small Farm Equipment at https://www.paperpot.co/  Follow PaperpotCo on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2B45VK

I am delighted to introduce my amazing guest from amazon (http://Start Your Farm: The Authoritative Guide to Becoming a Sustainable 21st Century Farmer) or her website! Yup! as you said, just the end of January having a little bit of snow raised in the DC Suburbs 55 been here a long time whole career has been in agriculture vegetable gardener part of a farm called Potomac Vegetable Farms  25 year career there growing and selling organically grown vegetables herbs cut flowers Tell me about your first gardening experience? It’s good story everybody has to start somewhere easiest way to describe it I think I was just born loving plants, they were sort of my sort of pets as a little child I would collect indoor plants in my room. I got a community garden plot when I was like 8 goes back quite a long time even though I grew up in a cul de sac, the most ideal suburban childhood but somehow agriculture grabbed me ended up getting a degree in horticulture in college not growing up on a a farm. Do you want to tell listeners what sustainable agriculture maybe means to you did you learn that in horticulture school? As a young person when I first 15-16-17 years old, luckily I worked on farms, that were quote unquote, “organically” started getting Organic Gardening magazine like everyone else,  keep up and see what other people were doing sustainable ag organic more specific and legally defined now bigger umbrella terminology organic biodynamic some conservation practices irregular no-till farmer might take part in fairly broad term specific legally Do you want to tell listeners about your book? so, the book is written Forrest Pritchard grass-based livestock grower sells in the larger DC market area our idea how to grow things how to grow animals vegetables technical aspects of farming what bugs are What we felt was missing was a book that helped described the foundational thinking, that goes with the thinking involved with a farm business Especially for people who are thinking about moving into a farming business income generating what things they might want to think about personal temperaments resources help think about the business and financial aspects manage your energy and not burn out how not to kill relationships when your pressing hard That area of the business mind is probably the most striking thing Like I said, I’ve been pouring through JM Fortier’s book. Trying to figure it all out and then he talks about 2 acres which is a lot more then our 1/3 acre. IDK why at this time in my life I’m obsessed with business podcasts which is so opposite when I was in college and you probably couldn’t even get me to go into the business building. But that’s part of my personality too when you talk about temperament. So what else do you see missing? The biggest thing is the business mind missing in folks that have an impulse to be a grower not the same thing at all need to have both of those combined in order to run a business to pay the bills to getting friendly with numbers can you get friendly sustainable ag bring together this ecological balance and all the beauties most of us growers are attracted to being outside touching the sun watching the plants grow nurturing impulse combine that ecological care Support this podcast

I know you are going to love her because she was our Crossfit gardener of the year in 2015! And you have taught me so much! I love all that you do and your delicious food and what you do! And she’s gonna share their new LVFarm Academy (http://www.lowervalleyfarm.com/p/welcome.html) Tell us a little about yourself. I am Mandy Gerth! Farmer and co-owner of Lower Valley Farm (http://www.lowervalleyfarm.com/p/welcome.html)  in Kalispell, MT my husband Jay and I are are going in our 7th year of full time farming. We run, I think we’re at about  4 acres of production all organic primarily sell through a CSA 2 acres of that is using the intensive model that was kind of  pioneered by JM Fortier! (http://www.themarketgardener.com/) I know you had him on your show!  (https://organicgardenerpodcast.com/170-jm-fortier-the-market-gardener/) community supported ag winter squash sweet corn potatoes separate rotation then intensive I think that is new since I last talked to you. We go really hard may through oct we run a 20 week vegetable CSA Kalispell Farmer’s Market do a tiny sizable amount of wholesale food aggregate directly to small grocery store chains overview of the farm! We also have 3 school-age children 7,9,11 they have grown up on the farm very literally co-owners awesome crew really helped make this farm go under all of that is our community, we also couldn’t do this without our awesome customer base! I could talk about the farm forever! OK, I think, what we want to hear about what’s been going on and how does your journey go from gardeners to farmers. Back to the beginning? We started out thinking we would be running livestock vegetable operation would be what would help us make money while we get a livestock operation going. Before the beginning ~ what made us want to do this our family had a life changing experience eating nutrient dense   We volunteered on farms a lot! We loved being a part of our farm community in that way in Indiana We were doing a raw milk share you can do in Indiana but not in Montana super local food grass fed beef lamb backyard chickens But we were buying farm pastured eggs slowly with each investment we made in lifestyle changes in our food Our young children’s health changing dramatically one of our children had some serious sensory issues We got in really deep and we were spending almost all of our money on food why don’t we have a farm? it was like we don’t have a farm because we aren’t farmers because we don’t know how to farm if I could go back to myself First of all I would give her a big hug you have no idea what you are getting into! We have a garden we can do this! what I would go back and tell myself having land is not having a farm access to land that had been in Jay’s family for 3 generations Parents had put it in a conservation easement But we built the farm and all the infrastructure! It was just a conventional hayfield That’s what we want to hear is how did you create this farm, that’s nutrient dense and it melts in your mouth and the table is laden with just an incredible amount of food! it’s been a steep learning curve made that huge dive (https://amzn.to/2TLfzwk) (https://amzn.to/2TLfzwk) (https://amzn.to/2TLfzwk) you should farm I was like yeah! we can do this, if people like us don’t do this who does? IDK maybe people with experience in combination (http://amzn.to/2kJalPJ) Market Gardener: A successful Grower’s Handbook for Small Scale Organic Farming (http://amzn.to/2kJalPJ) IDK if JM’s book (http://amzn.to/2kJalPJ) was out yet? I’ll go back and look and see The Urban Farmer: Growing Food for Profit on Leased and Support this podcast

This is Season 2, Episode 24 of the Small Scale Life Podcast, and I have a great interview lined up for you today.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you will have a break from my monologues with this podcast.  I am SURE there is much rejoicing with that news.  In this episode, I am interviewing a husband, dad, teacher, small business owner, body builder, trainer, and urban farmer!  This gentleman’s name is Michael Bell.  He is a fellow kindred spirit from down in Texas, and in Part 1 of our two part interview, we are talking urban farming! He is not only a mountain of muscle, but he also owns and operates Half Acre Farm.  Inspired by some of my heroes including Gary Vee, Curtis Stone and JM Fortier, Michael is carving out his organic footprint in a quiet spot six miles from down Downtown Dallas.  It is pretty cool talking with Michael, and I learned a lot from him.  Whether it is starting your own small business (not necessarily urban farming) or getting fit, I think there is something for everyone in these next two podcasts! Topics In this podcast, Michael Bell and I discussed the following: Introductions Who is Michael Bell? What was your first gardening experience? Urban Farming Why urban farming? Influences and inspiration Property Crops Business model and clients Challenges and solutions Future projects In Part 2 of this interview, we discuss body building and the journey to develop a healthy lifestyle. When it comes to this world of farming small, what is this world? Is it a bunch of small farms each operating independently? For the most part, I think the answer is yes. Given that, what's the next step. Is it more small farms operating independently or is those small farms growing to be larger small farmers. Now I am not talking 1.5 acre farms scaling to 100 acres, I am talking about 1.5 acre farms scaling to 10 acres. If small farms do that, what does that look like, both for this world of farming small and for each independently operated farm? Is that scale manageable on a people powered biointensive level? Or does this style of farming not scale? It's a question being asked by one of the leader in this movement, JM Fortier. A few years ago JM Fortier left his 1.5 acre farm behind to start working on an experimental 10 acre farm to test the idea and validity of scaling these types of farming methods. It's project which has produced some answers, but one which has also produced a lot of questions, some of which are the focus of our show today. It's all about the future of market gardening in this episode with farmer JM Fortier. Get JM's audiobook version of The Market Gardener at www.permaculturevoices.com/audiobook

Jodi's been farming and studying under the originator of the Grow Bio-Intensive form of farming, John Jeavons, for 18 years. Jodi's well known for using Jeavon's bio-intensive method to build soil. Soil that's deep and loose enough to literally put your arm into up to your elbow.  It's a soil that well known grower JM Fortier has called some of the best soil that he's ever seen.  It's from this rich soil that Jodi farms, growing his own fertility, his own food, saving seeds, and educating the next generation of farmers. He's traveled the world studying under the masters and visiting a lot farms along the way.  This summer Jodi made a stop in North America where he visited the home farms of both JM Fortier and Curtis.  As a result, he's very familiar with their market gardening style.  The question then becomes how can he apply his knowledge of bio-intensive practices to the context of market farming, and that's where we pick up the conversation today. Where do the worlds of bio-intensive growing and market gardening collide, and what's possible... Learn more at permaculturevoices.com/jodi
