Railway Age's 2025 Railroader of the Year is CSX President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Hinrichs, who joined the railroad industry in September 2022 and in a little more than two years has made immediate and long-term positive impacts. His collaborative approach to labor relations—for example, CSX being the first Class I to offer paid sick leave and forge preliminary agreements with its unions prior to the start of national bargaining—has gone a long way toward transforming the dynamic between management and rail labor from adversarial distrust to engaged problem-solving. Hinrichs firmly believes that for CSX to fully realize its growth potential, labor and management must function as one team, with mutual respect and trust. He knows that change is difficult, but he also knows it's necessary. And as a long-time railroad customer in his prior role as President of Ford Motor Company, he knows the importance of providing good service. CSX's overall excellent performance is a testament to that. Joe Hinrichs—only the third CSX executive to be named Railroader of the Year (he was preceded by Michael Ward in 2009 and Hays Watkins in 1984)—will be presented with the award at the traditional dinner hosted by the Western Railway Club at the Union League Club of Chicago on March 11, 2025. He sat down with Railway Age Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono at CSX's Jacksonville, Fla., headquarters for this interview.

Show #453 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 24th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Thank you to Freejoule aka James (I”'m super busy with my day job and don't get much time to catch up on the EV news. Nothing beats this podcast!”) for increasing his Patreon Suppoer, now an EXECUTIVE PRODUCER. Hello to new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER DERRICK LIKES. And new PRODUCER SAMUEL. TESLA’S Q1 2019 FINANCIAL RESULTS AND EARNINGS CALL Simon at Teslarati looks ahead to the Q1 results: "Expectations are quite tempered for Tesla this quarter, following the company’s less-than-expected production and delivery numbers in Q1. After a record number of production and deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2018, Tesla’s electric car deliveries fell by around 30%, while total production numbers fell by around 12%. TSLA stock has been weighed down by these results since their release in early April, with the company off around 20% this year," https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-earnings-call-what-to-expect/ RIVIAN GETS $500 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM FORD "Rivian just became reality with this major investment from the U.S.' sales leader in trucks." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Following the major investment made by Amazon, Ford has announced a $500 million investment into Rivian. Rivian, the maker of the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, is solely focused on electric adventure vehicles. For now, that's limited to the truck and SUV, but in the future, several more models are planned. An additional note on the investment is that the "companies have agreed to work together to develop an all-new, next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford’s growing EV portfolio using Rivian’s skateboard platform." Ford says that the Rivian deal and new offering are "in addition to Ford’s existing plans to develop a portfolio of battery electric vehicles" and notes that "Ford already has confirmed two key fully electric vehicles: a Mustang-inspired crossover coming in 2020 and a zero-emissions version of the best-selling F-150 pickup." VErge says: "Ford has decided what kind of vehicle it will build on Rivian’s platform, but it declined to specify. Just two months ago, Rivian announced a $700 million investment round led by Amazon. Rivian was also in talks with GM, but the startup reportedly backed out of the potential exclusive deal." Engadget says: "Rivian stressed that it would remain an independent company, but acknowledged that Ford's automotive president Joe Hinrichs was joining its board of directors." CNBC looked at the specs of the R1T and R1S: "Both trucks have 754 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds, with a top speed of 125 miles per hour. They also have three battery capacity options: 105 kilowatt-hour (kWH), which can travel up to 240 miles on one charge; 135 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 310 miles; and 180 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 410 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/346329/rivian-ford-investment-500-million/ A NEW TESLA MODEL S CAN NOW DRIVE FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAN FRANCISCO ON A SINGLE CHARGE "Tesla has announced that it has extended the range of its Model S vehicle to 370 miles and Model X to 325 miles on a single charge " reports TechCrunch: "Both models now have the newest drive unit technology, Tesla said. Combining an optimized permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor, silicon carbide power electronics and improved lubrication, cooling, bearings and gear designs the new cars can achieve better than 93 percent efficiency, Tesla said in a statement." https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/23/a-new-tesla-model-s-or-x-can-now-drive-from-los-angeles-to-san-francisco-on-a-single-charge/ Whilst Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com reports: "Along with this, getting your charge will take less time than ever before. Plugged into the new Supercharger V3, the vehicles will feed on that sweet electro-juice at a peak rate of 200 kW. On older, existing Supercharger stations, the vehicles can now utilize 145 kW charging. According to Tesla this accounts for a 50% improvement in charge speeds. The suspension is also being updated with "fully-adaptive damping, giving it an ultra-cushioned feel". Tesla says the new upgrades will constantly adapt to driver behavior and road conditions "automatically softening for more pronounced road inputs and firming for aggressive driving"." https://insideevs.com/news/346209/tesla-model-s-x-upgrade-more-range-efficiency/ EXTREME E TO PARTNER WITH SPARK RACING TECHNOLOGY Extreme E has joined forces with motorsport manufacturer Spark Racing Technology to engineer, develop and assemble the all-new electric SUV model for the pioneering off-road racing series. Spark Racing Technology will create and construct the common package with strict specification parts, before handing over the homologated framework to each team – allowing competitors to test and develop their own powertrain and bodywork. Prototype testing is scheduled to take place in July this year together with founding partner Continental Tyres, with the teams receiving the first delivery of 12 cars from Spark Racing Technology in March 2020. Teams will later have the opportunity to put the Extreme E cars through their paces with collective group testing in the summer, before hopping on board the newly-renovated RMS St. Helena for the first race in January 2021. EV STARTUP LUCID MOTORS APPOINTS FORMER TESLA VP OF VEHICLE ENGINEERING AS CEO "Luxury electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Peter Rawlinson as CEO, effective immediately. He will retain his role as CTO where is responsible for all of Lucid's design and engineering activities, including the automaker's first car—the Lucid Air ultra-luxury electric sedan." according to FutureCar.com: "Rawlinson joined Lucid in 2013 after working at Tesla. Rawlinson served as Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and Chief Engineer of the Tesla Model S, working under Elon Musk. Prior to Tesla, he was Chief Engineer at Lotus Cars and Principal Engineer at Jaguar Cars." https://www.futurecar.com/3154/EV-Startup-Lucid-Motors-Appoints-Former-Tesla-VP-of-Vehicle-Engineering-as-CEO NEXT-GEN PORSCHE BOXSTER, CAYMAN GOING PURE ELECTRIC It’s probably only a matter of time before Porsche will electrify its core sports car, the 911. Not only that, but it looks like the Boxster and Cayman duo is also going to get a charging port as a new report from Autocar suggests the Stuttgart-based marque has green-lighted pure electric versions of the entry-level sports cars." writes Adrian for Motor1.com: "Porsche chairman Oliver Blume has revealed in an interview with Autocar the company is already testing pure electric 718 prototypes while working on a hybrid 718. He went on to mention they haven’t made up their minds yet about whether the cars will be getting plug-in hybrid or hybrid setups, but the plan is to sell Boxster and Cayman EVs alongside electrified versions of the two models. According to the same report, the entirely electric models are expected to switch to Porsche’s new PPE platform while the hybrid / plug-in hybrid derivatives could stick to the current underpinnings, albeit in an updated form that allows electrification." https://www.motor1.com/news/346212/next-porsche-boxster-cayman-electric/ DAIMLER SAYS BATTERY-ELECTRIC TRUCKS KEY TO ZERO EMISSIONS COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT "Battery-electric vehicles are the key to zero-emission commercial transportation in North America, according to Daimler Trucks North America, which is moving forward with battery-electric vehicle commercialization, contending that hydrogen fuel cells aren’t ready for prime time."reports TruckingInfo.com today: "“The road to emissions-free transportation is going to be driven with battery-electric vehicles. I believe the future is electric,” said Roger Nielsen, president and CEO of DTNA, speaking to a crowd assembled in Long Beach for the ACT Expo April 24. The company announced it will begin converting its Portland manufacturing plant to produce electric Freightliners, “to enable rapid scale-up of thoroughly tested and validated electric vehicles,” it said in a release. Although DTNA’s vision of electric vehicles does not exclude fuel cells, he said, “I can see a glimpse of it over the horizon, but it will not be this generation of engineers who will be delivering it.”" https://www.truckinginfo.com/330460/daimler-says-battery-electric-trucks-key-to-zero-emissions-commercial-transport COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TOYOTA AND SUZUKI PARTNER ON HYBRIDS AND EVS Toyota and Suzuki on Wednesday said they planned to produce electric vehicles and compact cars for each other to better compete with fast-changing technologies in the global auto industry." According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. They will also join forces in Europe, where Toyota will produce electric vehicles based on its RAV4 SUV crossover and Corolla wagon for Suzuki, while Suzuki will supply Toyota with gasoline engines for compact vehicle models sold in the region." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/20/toyota-suzuki-partner-on-hybrids-evs-building-cars-for-each-o/ HONDA LOGS 15,000 REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST FOR ELECTRIC E PROTOTYPE "Earlier this month, Honda revealed that so far it received 15,000 registrations of interest for the Honda e Prototype. As the number comes from March 5, we guess it could be significantly higher after the Geneva Motor Show." reports InsideEVs.com today: "If the price is significantly higher than average for its subcompact segment (because of the premium interior and battery cost), we would not expect too high of a volume – especially in late 2019. For comparison, BMW is selling less than 37,000 i3 per year globally after a few years on the market and two range extensions. co.uk, click Cars and then scroll down to Welcome To The Volt Age. The new Honda e Prototype previews Honda’s new electric car, which will be available to reserve early in the summer 2019." https://insideevs.com/honda-15000-honda-e-prototype/ HYUNDAI, KIA, OLA TO BUILD INDIA-SPECIFIC ELECTRIC VEHICLES "India-based Ola ― one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms ― announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group focused on smart mobility solutions and electric vehicle development. The agreement will see the Hyundai, Kia and Ola extensively collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions." "Hyundai Motor Group expects to accelerate its transition from a ‘car manufacturer’ into a ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’, as the partnership’s initiatives will allow it to engage in all aspects across the entire mobility value chain ― including vehicle production, fleet operation and mobility services." https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/hyundai-kia-ola-to-build-india-specific-electric-vehicles/ JAGUAR LAND ROVER INSTALLS UK’S LARGEST WORK CHARGING STATION "Jaguar Land Rover Group has installed at its Gaydon engineering center the UK‘s largest smart charging station for employees. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. In this case, the REGO scheme certifies that Jaguar Land Rover’s entire supply comes from renewable generation.” https://insideevs.com/jaguar-land-rover-largest-work-charging-station/ TESLA MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE VS. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. If you want all the handy extra features (other than extra range), you can get them for a lot less in the Nissan Leaf Plus SL—especially while Nissan retains its full federal tax credit for the next several months." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122172_tesla-model-3-standard-range-vs-nissan-leaf-plus-what-you-get-for-your-money NIKOLA CAN ‘EASILY’ DO ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCKS LIKE TESLA SEMI "New Nikola Motor president Mark Russell recently provided some updates on the company’s efforts to establish its hydrogen refueling stations across the United States, as well as his thoughts about rivals like the Tesla Semi and other hybrid trucks like the modified Kenworth-Toyota T680 long-hauler that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January." Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. Tesla doesn’t have anything to compete with us in long-haul" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-rival-nikola-president-interview/ FORD INVESTS $850 MILLION TO PRODUCE NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE US And finally we turn to Electrek for news about Ford: "Ford has announced today new investments in its US facilities for future production of next-generation electric vehicles as well as Ford’s first autonomous vehicles. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico. Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles. This is good news for the future of southeast Michigan, delivering more good-paying manufacturing jobs.” COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. CHANGE Change seems to be a popular theme these days. Some say it began with the political season but those in automotive know better. In fact, it's been on the horizon for a while. Big Change. The kind that will reshape American manufacturing for years to come. The last time we saw something like this was in the mid-20th century with World War II. And though the factors leading this retooling aren't quite as dire, they are just as dramatic led by a massive shift in consumer preferences, the technological challenge of reducing CO2 emissions at the same time as dealing with the booming developing markets. How will OEMs execute what some are calling the "Greatest Peacetime Manufacturing Conversion?" What will the effect be on their Suppliers? And what about the labor force -- how much will it diminish? These are just a few of the questions that John McElroy has for our two manufacturing experts. Offering insight from the OEM side is Joe Hinrichs the group vice president of global manufacturing for Ford Motor Company. Joining Mr. Hinrichs with an analyst perspective is Jay Baron, the president of CAR, the Center for Automotive Research. And don't forget you can watch the latest edition of Autoline right now at our website (http://www.autoline.tv/) along with our Internet-only segment Autoline EXTRA as well as any of our archived shows.
