Tesla, and its CEO Elon Musk, are the big names in electric vehicles, but a lot of competitors are nipping at their heels, including one led by a former top Tesla engineer. Peter Rawlinson is the CEO of Lucid, a billion-dollar auto startup he says has better technology than its rivals. The company recently completed a $1.75 billion stock offering, and has backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Now, as major automakers such as Volkswagen, General Motors and Ford pull back on their EV ambitions, find out why Rawlinson says Lucid's all-in on luxury vehicles with a high price tag and, eventually, smaller batteries. Plus, why he says he won't be building a $20,000 EV any time soon. He speaks to WSJ's Tim Higgins and Christopher Mims in episode one of our interview series Bold Names. A double episode: First, our experts weigh in on Jaguar's new marketing stunt and concept. And second, Jason drives a prototype Lucid Gravity, the all-new SUV. === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === This was a big week for Jaguar, with a controversial ad that got lots of attention, and a wild concept that previews its new 4-door electric GT. Jason feels it's important to remember that the ad served one purpose: to get attention on an automaker we called Dead Brand Walking. And it very much worked. Jason's Van, Jynah, survived a 1500-mile round-trip to Salt Lake City, joining the mile-high club several times along the way. Thankfully, Vredestein Tires shipped a brand new set of Wintrac Pro winter tires just in time for alpine blizzards, because the Van, Jynah, had to make it across a mountain chain in the snow. Including climbing the famed Donner Pass — with chains. Afterwards, Jason gets behind the wheel of Lucid's latest creation – and second ever model – the new 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV. The boys discuss its unrelenting commitment to efficiency across the board: from its range, to interior and cargo space, and even mounting fuse blocks inside of chassis bracing on the Air sedan. Jason admits to taking an engineering mule for a brief spin and recounts its handling dynamics. Later, while smooshing his face onto a pane of glass at Lucid HQ, Jason spoke with CEO, Peter Rawlinson. Peter personally engineered the ingenious rear hatch seal, and also showed off the new frunk seat with fold-out mud guard. Then the boys lament the post-fact and internet-troll era which we, unfortunately, continue to live in. Derek defends his honor and encyclopedic knowledge from a viewer who claims the Mercedes CLK DTM had the first AMG engine – not the CLK63 Black Series. Too bad the viewer is incorrect (the CLK DTM used a derivative of the regular production M113; the Black Series used AMG's own M156. And Jason fights off M fans who argue they can “code out” the G80 M3's faults. Afterwards, they discuss the state of automotive marketing. First by reminiscing about automotive ads from 20 years ago with staying power, and then by debating whether or not Jaguar's latest rebranding and ad campaign was a success. Does Jaguar's last-ditch effort to save the marque stand a chance at actually swaying consumers? Or is it still a Dead Brand Walking? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The CEO of EV startup Lucid Motors had a really good year in 2022. A new CEO compensation survey from Automotive News and Equilar says the head of the luxury EV company's compensation package is valued at more than a third of a billion dollars. Peter Rawlinson's base salary, at $575,000, is reasonable. He also took home $5.5 million in stock options and some $373 million in stock awards. The total tally is about $379 million — not a bad year at all.

NON-TESLA SUPERCHARGER PILOT GOES LIVE IN NETHERLANDS - Today we are launching our Non-Tesla Supercharger pilot at 10 Supercharger locations in the Netherlands. - With this pilot, 10 stations are now accessible to Dutch Non-Tesla EV drivers via the Tesla app - More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide. - We're starting with a select number of sites so that we can review the experience, monitor congestion and assess feedback before expanding. Future sites will only be opened to Non-Tesla vehicles if there is available capacity. - As a Tesla driver you benefit from the seamless integration of charge post and vehicle, optimized route planning and battery pre-conditioning. With your Tesla, you'll also have access to the lowest Supercharger pricing. - Download the Tesla app (version 4.2.3 or higher) for iOS or Android and create a Tesla Account. Select 'Charge Your Non-Tesla' and find your Supercharger site. Add your payment method, plug-in your car, select a stall and tap 'Start Charging.' Select 'Stop Charging' to complete your session. - Pricing for Non-Tesla drivers reflects additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles. Rates vary by site, and you can view charging prices in the Tesla app. The per kWh price to charge can be lowered with a charging membership. - Certain Supercharger site layouts may not be suitable for some cars. Please do not obstruct other cars by parking over the lines if the cable cannot comfortably reach your car. When member BahamaTodd updated his MyChevrolet app to version 5.7.0, he clicked through to the Energy Assist page and found three GM electric vehicles listed, plus their estimated range figures on a 100% charge. One was the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt, rated for 259 miles, the second was the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, rated for 247 miles. The third was an unexpected entry, being the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, listed as able to go 334 miles on a full charge. - The figures for both Bolts are the official EPA estimates. The mileage figure for the Hummer is a mystery, as is why it's popped up here in the MyChevrolet app instead of the MyGMC app. The EPA hasn't certified the 2022 Hummer yet, so that's not the source. - With pre-production of the Edition 1 slated to begin at GM's Factory Zero any day now, answers shouldn't be long in coming. As we can see in the video shared by Len Devanna, Head of Digital Experience at Lucid (and re-uploaded on YouTube), about 20 Lucid Airs departed for a Lucid Rally. - Lucid will deliver 520 Dream Edition cars (in two specs - Range or Performance). Then, the less expensive Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air will follow. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544466/lucid-air-dream-edition-rally/ LUCID AIR SPECS REVEALED: 118 KWH DREAM PACK, 112 KWH GRAND TOURING - The limited Dream Edition version is equipped with a 118 kWh battery pack, featuring 22 modules totaling 6,600 cylindrical cells - The Grand Touring version has about a 6 kWh smaller battery - 112 kWh - We believe that those cells are supplied by Samsung SDI, Lucid's first supplier, announced in December 2016 (see the original press release here). In 2020, the company announced that the battery cells for "standard version" cars will be supplied by LG Chem's LG Energy Solution. - One of the Lucid's key elements is the 900 V battery architecture, which allows for increased efficiency. It also makes it easier to deliver up to around 300 kW of charging power, which allows it to take just about 20 minutes to replenish 300 miles of range. - The Lucid Air is the first high-end model that is expected to be sold in quite significant volumes, starting with 20,000 in 2022. In the 2023, it should be joined by an even higher-volume, large SUV - "Gravity." By 2025, both should be sold at over 120,000 per year (including 42,000 Air and 86,000 Gravity). - EPA range: Grand Touring (19") - 516 miles (830 km), Grand Touring (21") - 469 miles (755 km) - 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) timeDream Edition Performance (19") - 3.3 seconds Dream Edition Performance (21") - 3.0 seconds Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544455/lucid-air-118kwh-battery-112kwh/ NEW LONGER-RANGE MG ZS EV GOES ON SALE - Priced from £28,495 (incl. BMW IX FIRST DRIVE REVIEW "The large, curved display screen that stretches across more than half of the dashboard. While it appears to be one long display, it's actually two distinct displays; a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen, side by side and covered by a single piece of glass. The display is bright and crystal clear and BMW's new iDrive 8 (the iX is the first BMW to get iDrive 8) is a dramatic improvement over previous versions" says Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "The iX doesn't drive like a 5,659 lbs SUV. Even though it's roughly 600 to 800-lbs heavier than an X5, depending on the configuration, the iX actually feels like it's lighter. Toss it around on the switchbacks and the iX will behave exemplarily. The iX benefits from having all the weight of the 111 kWh battery pack down below the passenger compartment, as well as a bespoke chassis. BMW quotes the iX as going 0-60mph in a scant 4.4 seconds and that felt about right. But the performance doesn't stop there. Punch the accelerator at highway speeds and you still get pushed back into your seat. The dual-motor powertrain pushes out 516 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque and is more than enough to put a smile on the face of just about any potential iX buyer." Tom concludes: "When DC fast charging, the iX can accept up to 200 kW and BMW promises a 10% to 80% DC fast charge time of 35 minutes. With a starting MSRP of $83,200 (plus $995 destination), the iX xDrive50 isn't cheap. However, when you put it up against its current competition: Tesla Model X $99,990 + $1,200 destination and Audi e-tron Premium Plus $74,800 + $1,095 destination, the iX looks pretty good." This bold claim was made by Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath during an interview with auto motorsport. For a company with only two models built so far, it's quite a claim, but Ingenlath has big plans for the future of Polestar with models that will take the fight directly to Porsche." reports motor1.com: "This means competition with Tesla and BMW in the sports sedan and SUV space while targeting Porsche's upcoming electric sports cars. Thomas Ingenlath affirms, “We are competing with Porsche for the best electrically powered premium sports car. The growing appetite and excitement for EVs mean that as long as Polestar can produce a strong product they will surely gain market share. Can they compete with Porsche to build an electric sports car" Read more: https://www.motor1.com/news/539574/polestar-sports-car-porsche/ AUTOMAKERS ARE SPENDING BILLIONS ON BATTERY DEVELOPMENT "Automakers and startups are investing billions of dollars in batteries in hopes that new or revamped chemistries, materials, and manufacturing processes will give them a leg up in a future where electric vehicles rule. Peter Rawlinson, the CEO of the electric-vehicle startup Lucid Motors, said this emphasis on the battery was wrong. An EV's range — and its customer appeal — he said, has little to do with how many kilowatts it hauls around." according to a subscriber piece in Business Insider: "The "Dream Edition" of Lucid's first model, the Lucid Air, offers an industry-trouncing range of 520 miles. That achievement, the CEO said, is "90% not the battery and 10% the battery. Rawlinson said offering that kind of range hinged on mastering every element of the car, including the motors, inverter, transmission, drive shafts, tires, aerodynamics, and cooling system." "The battery pack is totally overrated, and most people don't get it," Rawlinson told Insider. "The car has the range, not the battery. And the car has the efficiency, not the battery." One special Crimson red body and one new Deep blue body were seen at the factory by visitors at Giga Fest—while the third, a Khaki-like color, was not seen, but seems will also be offered." says the Tesmanian blog: "Among other cool spottings, one of the interesting observations were two Model Y bodies painted in new colors. In addition to these two colors, Giga Berlin is also expected to offer vehicles painted in khaki or similar to this color." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-giga-berlin-shows-two-new-colors-for-the-first-time-for-the-german-made-model-y TESLA AUTO INSURANCE EXPANDING INTO TEXAS THIS WEEK "Tesla will launch its own brand of auto insurance in Texas this week, founder Elon Musk said during a Oct. 7 shareholders call addressing the company's headquarters relocation from Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas. In January the state insurance department approved a revised policy form submitted by Redpoint County Mutual Insurance Co. for a Tesla Insurance program for private passenger autos." says InsuranceJournal.com: "Redpoint will underwrite Tesla's Texas insurance program, which will be distributed through the Tesla Insurance Services of Texas Inc. Tesla has offered auto insurance in California for Tesla vehicles since 2019. Musk said Tesla is seeking regulatory approval in California to add real-time insurance." Kids of all ages dug the carnival rides, the giant Tesla coils shootin' out sparks, and the obligatory pumpin' sound-and-light show. For techies, however, the star of the show was Tesla's new structural battery pack. A cutaway version was on display, clearly showing how the new 4680 cells are arranged in the pack. Tesla offered visitors a mini-tour of the plant, and some of the many innovations making their debuts here were on display." says CHarles Morris at ChargedEVs.com: "The company is currently producing them on a pilot line in California, and several suppliers are reportedly working on scaling them to mass production. The new battery pack features a “cell-to-pack” design, with no battery modules, which should make it simpler and cheaper to produce. Its structural strength enables it to be joined with Tesla's massive single-piece front and rear underbody castings, further reducing weight, complexity and cost." When a demo car was showcased for the first time last year, the DTM said each race would last 30 minutes, with the possibility of automated battery changes during the pitstops." "How long before Australia follows in the footsteps of Scandinavia and we see the demise of the plugless hybrid (HEV or Hybrid Electric Vehicle) – a market dominated by Toyota?" asks The Driven: "Norway and Sweden have long been the bellwethers of the electric car revolution and we have watched with avid fascination how BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) and PHEVs (Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) have increased their penetration in these countries. One phenomenon which may have flown under the radar is the slow death of the non-plug in hybrid (HEV), also known as “mild hybrids”. As avant garde as the Prius was 20 years ago, it is now quickly becoming passé. And from 2025, at least in Norway and from 2030 in many other countries, they will be banned." Carwow, which saw a 59% surge in searches for EVs last week, designed the ‘Fuelled Off' campaign in-house in an attempt to capitalize on increased demand." write The Drum: "For its campaign Carwow tapped the face of its YouTube channel, Mat Watson, to front the ads, which say, ‘Don't be fuelish, Go EV.' "As some petrol stations ran out of fuel and queues of cars lined up outside those that did have stocks, causing lengthy waits for motorists waiting to fill up, many drivers' thoughts turned to the option of buying an electric vehicle." says The Guardian: "The classified ad website Autotrader says there was a 60% rise in searches for electric cars in the week after 24 September, when shortages at the pumps started. Industry figures show that the number of electric cars sold in the UK last month neared the figures for the whole of 2019. In the past, many drivers have been turned off by the upfront cost, which is typically higher than petrol equivalents. But with the price of production falling and battery prices coming down, switching is becoming more accessible. So is now the time to go electric?" Available in a choice of two battery capacities and offered in rear- and four-wheel drive guises, the model will also come with the three basic trim levels, plus a high-end launch edition." reports Motor1: "The mechanical options are fairly simple, with the cheapest models boasting a 58 kWh battery and an electric motor that feeds power to the rear wheels. That provides a range of up to 240 miles. Opting for that larger pack extends the range to up to 300 miles, but that will be slightly limited if you opt for the four-wheel drive variants. Those models still get a respectable 287-mile range, but they offer vastly improved performance. Where the 58 kWh RWD models will get from 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds thanks to their 168 bhp motors, the 73 kWh RWD cars offer 215 bhp – enough to cut that time by more than a second. But the 73 kWh AWD cars are even faster, with 300 bhp taking them from 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds. Another appealing option is the Vehicle 2 Load pack, which allows customers to use the car’s battery to charge any electric devices, supplying up to 3.6 kW of power." I still think the party trick is 10-80% charging in 18 minutes. https://uk.motor1.com/news/506127/hyundai-ioniq-5-uk-pricing/ SPAIN POURS BILLIONS INTO LANDING EUROPEAN ELECTRIC VEHICLE PRODUCTION "Spain is moving aggressively to land new battery and electric vehicle plants, using billions of European Union pandemic relief funds to avoid being left behind as the global auto sector undertakes the biggest technology transformation in a century." reports Autoblog: "As Europe's second largest car-producing nation behind Germany, and with the automotive sector accounting for 10% of its economy, Spain has a lot to lose as automakers overhaul supply chains and manufacturing for electric vehicles. Germany and number three European producer France are already pouring funds into battery plants, supporting their respective national champion automakers, and both Volkswagen and Renaultare investing heavily in EVs on their home turf. Of the €70 billion to be sent from Brussels in the form of grants, the Spanish government plans to spend 13 billion on sustainable mobility through 2023." https://www.autoblog.com/2021/05/09/spanish-ev-production/ PORSCHE MACAN EV WILL ARRIVE WITH MORE RANGE THAN TAYCAN "Porsche's best-selling model will have an electric version arriving in 2023, and the company is currently testing prototypes. It'll ride on a new electric platform, have significantly more range than the Taycan electric sedan" says Car & Driver: "The electric Macan will be built on VW Group's Premium Platform Electric (PPE) electric architecture that will be used on a range of future Audi and Porsche products. The EV will borrow the Taycan's 800-volt architecture, which allows for fast charging at a maximum of 270 kilowatts, and like the Taycan, Porsche is planning that the electric Macan will have two battery sizes available. Porsche claims that the Macan EV will have "significantly" more range than the current Taycan. That means it should boast more than the 2021 Taycan 4S model's 227 miles of EPA-estimated range, which is currently the highest in the lineup." https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36355610/porsche-macan-electric-prototype-revealed/ All-electric Porsche Taycan new registrations ahead of the Cayenne SUV in domestic Germany in April. Only second to the 911. https://twitter.com/auto_schmidt/status/1391327681896136712 RIVIAN TELLS US MORE ABOUT R1T SIZE & STORAGE "Rivian says it had the challenge of giving buyers enough room to comfortably seat five people and have room for their cargo/luggage but also have a truck that fits well in the garage if need be. Landing a little smaller than the F-150/Silverado, combined with better packaging because it’s an EV, gives us that." says ClaenTechnica. And on the Frunk: "The company says it fits “a half-dozen full grocery bags or two full-sized coolers.” In the picture, they show it holding a duffel bag, shoes, and other odds and ends. It’s not a tiny storage space at all. It’s also got LED lighting, a 12 volt outlet, and a cargo net." And on the Gear Tunnel: "Behind the cab and below the bed, Rivian has put in another spot for gear. It opens up on both ends, and has room for the long things you’d take outdoors. From end to end, it’s 65 inches long, or about 5.5 feet (about 1.6 meters). Everyone does different things outdoors, but that’s enough space for quite a few things" On the Bed: "Measurements from the cab to the back of the down tailgate are just shy of 7 feet, while the width between wheel wells is 50 inches. Not a problem at all. With the tailgate closed, you get that same width, but only 54″ of length. That’s still almost 5 feet, so you can still haul bikes and plenty of other things you’d take outdoors without issue. " There are 2 x 15amp 120v outlets too, plus air compressor. https://cleantechnica.com/2021/05/08/rivian-tells-us-more-about-r1t-size-storage/ BIG AUTO IS USING THE OLDEST TRICK IN ITS PLAYBOOK TO STEAL CUSTOMERS FROM TESLA "Tesla also has insanely high brand loyalty and massive appeal to people who've never gone electric, so at the moment, it's all on Big Auto to convince consumers that they should buy a Mustang Mach-E or Cadillac Lyriq rather than a Model Y or Model X." says Business Insider: "However, the EV market isn't sitting still. It's currently about 2% of sales in the US, but unlike the gas-engine market, which can't get much bigger, the EV market is poised to grow by swapping internal-combustion share for electric-car share: a million internal combustion vehicles out, a million EVs in. So Tesla must defend and capture simultaneously, fighting the dreaded two-front war." https://www.businessinsider.com/big-autos-oldest-trick-in-book-steal-customers-from-tesla-2021-5?r=US&IR=T QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power. Senior Manager, Lucid - Formerly Toyota & Tesla Show notes: https://www.leanblog.org/410 My guest for Episode #410 of the Lean Blog Interviews podcast is Keith Champion, Senior Manager ofOperational Excellence at Lucid Motors, a new entrant in the electric vehicle marketplace, with their Lucid Air luxury sedan hitting the market very soon. Keith worked for Toyota for more than 17 years (thanks to fellow Toyota alum and previous podcast guest Tim Turner for making the connection). As Keith talks about in the episode, he started as a Team Member at Toyota Georgetown, progressing his career to Team Leader, Group Leader, and other roles. He then spent nine years working for Tesla Motors. Keith then joined Lucid in 2019 -- BTW, the CEO of Lucid, Peter Rawlinson, was previously Vice President of Vehicle Engineering at Tesla and Chief Engineer of the Model S. Topics and questions in today's episode (and related links): What's your Lean / TPS origin story? It sort of starts before Toyota What happens when you "pull the andon cord" at Toyota? How is Lucid trying to build the culture right the first time? What is the leadership team like at Lucid? Is there a management "philosophy" as Toyota might talk about? What are the core values of Lucid Motors? What's the biggest operations (and supply chain) challenge related to starting a new factory in Arizona? How do you build for scalability? How important is it to have "built in quality" for a luxury vehicle (or any car)? What is an empowering continuous improvement program? Not just suggestions, but implement... What are the five key goals and metrics that are used throughout the factory? Lucid article (and video) about General Assembly A look at the paint shop The podcast is sponsored by Stiles Associates, now in their 30th year of business. They are the go-to Lean recruiting firm serving the manufacturing, private equity and healthcare industries. Learn more. This podcast is part of the #LeanCommunicators network.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt "14,805 Ford Mach E manufactured in Q1 of which just under half in March. 6,614 sold in the US during the same period." WARREN BUFFETT-BACKED TESLA RIVAL REPORTS 162% PROFIT JUMP "BYD Co., the Chinese electric-vehicle maker in which Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway holds a stake, said profit more than doubled last year thanks to a recovery in demand in the world’s biggest car market." reports Livemint.com: "Shenzhen-based BYD’s net income surged 162% to 4.2 billion yuan ($644 million) in 2020, with operating revenue climbing to 153.5 billion yuan, according to its annual report. The company also estimated first-quarter profit will rise as much as 166%." https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/warren-buffett-backed-tesla-rival-reports-162-profit-jump-11617071192491.html XPENG SELF-DRIVING SYSTEM TESTED OVER 1,800-MILE ROAD TRIP "Chinese electric-vehicle startup Xpeng reached a major milestone in March in the development of its self-driving system for highways known as Navigation Guided Pilot." says Motor Authority: "NGP falls under the Xpilot banner which groups all of Xpeng's electronic driver-assist features, and is ranked at Level 2 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability as it still requires corrections to be made by the driver from time to time. However, the number of corrections is relatively low as Xpeng has demonstrated in a recent test. Xpeng in March invited 228 journalists, EV enthusiasts and industry experts to test the NGP in a fleet of P7 sedans traveling between the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Beijing. The particular route was chosen due to the complex situations the cars would encounter, as well as it being representative of conditions found on most Chinese highways. After compiling the results, it was found that the system required on average 0.71 corrections per 62 miles. NGP relies on an array of sensors as well as GPS navigation and high-definition map data. The sensors include 14 cameras, five millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, with all of the data processed by Nvidia's Drive Xavier computer chip." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1131771_xpeng-self-driving-system-tested-over-1-800-mile-road-trip JOE BIDEN UNVEILS AMERICA’S INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN "On March 31st he announced the first half of his massive infrastructure package—laden both with old-fashioned blue-collar building projects as well as newfangled initiatives to help propel America into a greener future. $174bn of it will go on electric vehicles—tax credits to help consumers afford them, to encourage states to build 500,000 public charging stations and to boost domestic supply chains (the White House laments the size of America’s electric-vehicle market, which is just one-third that of China’s)." reports The Economist. The Washington Post had an odd take: "The intention here is good, but these efforts could strand America behind the international curve. That’s because they ignore a burgeoning global trend in EV charging: a shift toward battery swapping. This simple, powerful mode of EV refueling uses robots to physically remove empty batteries and replace them with fully charged batteries — much as you would change the batteries in a flashlight. It’s already propelling the spread of scooters, electric rickshaws and EVs throughout China. “Fast chargers” represent an incomplete solution at best, partly because the name is a misnomer: they still take roughly an hour to charge." The author: Levi Tillemann. He is vice president for policy and international outreach at Ample. https://www.economist.com/united-states/2021/04/01/joe-biden-unveils-americas-most-ambitious-infrastructure-plan-in-generations APPLE’S MASSIVE CALIFORNIA SOLAR FARM WILL USE TESLA ‘MEGAPACK’ BATTERIES "Earlier today, Apple announced it was building one of the largest battery projects in the United States, located at the California Flats Solar Project, in Monterey County. What Apple didn’t disclose was the huge solar farm would be leveraging ‘megapack’ batteries from Tesla to store excess energy from the sun. According to The Verge, Monterey County confirmed Tesla ‘megapack’ batteries would be used by Apple:" says iPhone Canada: "Apple says its new energy storage project would have enough juice to power over 7,000 homes for one day." https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/news/apples-massive-california-solar-farm-will-use-tesla-megapack-batteries/ A UNIVERSAL CHARGING STANDARD IS NEEDED FOR MASS EV ADOPTION "Rivian’s recently introduced Adventure Network of chargers sets the stage for a future of automaker exclusive charging made up of a confusing combo of charger types and exclusive networks. From a business standpoint, this makes sense for automakers. Enticing customers with an exclusive charging network can be sold as a benefit to both current and previous EV owners as well as people who aren’t owners and are on the fence about ownership. From a mass adoption standpoint, it won’t work." writes Gizmodo: " Tesla is the only automakers that uses its own proprietary charge connector. When Tesla established the Supercharger network in late 2012 it created its own Tesla-specific DC fast charging connector, because the common standard CCS plug didn’t yet exist. Tesla has clung to its own charger, despite everyone else agreeing on a new standard, shutting everyone else out from using the Supercharger network." https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2021/04/a-universal-charging-standard-is-needed-for-mass-ev-adoption/ EXTREME E SERIES STARTS THIS WEEKEND "Extreme E is an exciting new motorsport, racing all-electric SUVs off-road in five different venues across diverse, challenging terrains. These venues are located in some of the most remote places on earth, and they’ve been chosen because these places have been devastated by the effects of climate change." reports CNBC: "There are nine teams, each with one male and female driver (gender equality being another pillar of Extreme E), including famous names from many different motorsports. We have three Formula 1 world champions as team owners — Lewis Hamilton (X44), Nico Rosberg (Rosberg X Racing) and Jenson Button (JBXE) who is also a driver himself. Also among the driver line-up are former world rally champions Sébastien Loeb who won nine straight titles between 2004 and 2012 and twice-winner Carlos Sainz who has three Dakar Rally crowns. Behind the scenes, there are further F1 links with McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown as Andretti United’s team principal, while Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull Racing, and ex-driver Jean-Eric Vergne are both with Veloce Racing." https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/02/extreme-e-your-essential-guide-to-all-new-motorsport-series.html MEET THE BRITON LEADING A TESLA RIVAL "The Lucid Motors boss Peter Rawlinson is fluent in the language of the new breed of electric carmaker: he wants to save the planet and he wants to do it fast." asys The Guardian: "Such is the urgency of the “impending environmental crisis” facing the world, according to Rawlinson, that Lucid is hoping to work with mass-market carmakers to get its technology into production as soon as possible. Lucid has been “approached by a few car companies this year” over licensing deals, Rawlinson told the Guardian. Those talks have yielded “nothing tangible” yet and the prospect of earning revenues from partnerships with other carmakers, he says, remains very speculative." “The dichotomy is we need to get millions of $25,000 cars into production fast to save the planet. We’ve got the right technology but as a company I can’t get there for about eight, nine years, and it’s too late.” https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/apr/03/meet-the-briton-leading-a-tesla-rival-who-wants-to-save-the-planet-lucid NISSAN ON PATH TO COBALT-FREE EV BATTERIES BY MID-2020S "Nissan Motor intends to start using cobalt-free EV batteries by the mid-2020s, Nikkei has learned, as the rare metal element falls into short supply and concern rises about further price increases now that global demand for electric vehicles is swelling." reports Nikkei.com: "The Japanese automaker wants to reduce the cost of electric vehicles, without affecting the range of these cars on a single charge. Batteries account for 30% of an electric vehicle's manufacturing cost. And about 20% of the battery's cost comes from the positive electrode, which is made of 20% cobalt as well as nickel and manganese. Nissan says it will reduce cobalt's composition ratio to about 10% for an AriYa electric vehicle to be introduced later this year." https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Environment/Climate-Change/Nissan-on-path-to-cobalt-free-EV-batteries-by-mid-2020s2 BP JOINS BMW, DAIMLER EV CHARGING VENTURE "bp agreed to join BMW Group and Daimler Mobility AG in their drive to extend and significantly improve electrification, making electric vehicle charging more convenient, simpler and seamless for drivers." electric Vehicles Research: "Digital Charging Solutions GmbH stands behind the CHARGE NOW brand and operates charging services such as "Mercedes me Charge", "BMW Charging" and "MINI Charging". DCS already offers access to 228,000 charging points in 32 countries giving OEMs, fleet customers and EV drivers extensive access to charging infrastructure across Europe." https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/23477/bp-joins-bmw-daimler-ev-charging-venture?rsst2id=3 QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What incentive would make the most difference to you buying an EV? Recently, Panasonic disclosed that they were starting production of new battery cells with better performance for Tesla." No indication which cells these are. Lots of speculation it means Panasonic are making the new 4680 form factor cells. The Plaid edition will use those cells with no indication the other S/X models will change from 18650. I say no to anyone else making the 4680 cells. So much of the IP will sit with Tesla. They are still perfecting the dry electrode process, there's no reason they'd hand over that knowledge to any other battery producer. https://electrek.co/2021/01/04/tesla-tsla-battery-cell-deal-panasonic/ LUCID MOTORS TO EXPAND SAUDI PRESENCE, SCOUTING RETAIL LOCATIONS "Lucid Motors, the Californian electric vehicle (EV) carmaker part-owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), is scouting out locations for retail sales outlets in the Kingdom, CEO Peter Rawlinson told Arab News. Although many compare Lucid to Tesla, Rawlinson called Lucid the first EV to compete with traditional luxury manufacturers such as Mercedes, BMW and Porsche. " says Arabnews.com: "In terms of the carmaker’s immediate partnership with the Kingdom, the CEO said his teams are scrutinizing possible locations in Saudi Arabia to open retail outlets — what Lucid calls “Studios” — for their luxury EVs. Rawlinson said a major priority is to address the public’s concerns over affordability and “range anxiety,” noting that Lucid’s vehicles offer as much as 517 miles on a charge. He said Lucid will bring down costs through efficiencies and technology improvements focused, in part, on improving the battery performance and reducing battery size." https://www.arabnews.com/node/1786091/business-economy 2021 MARKS ENTRY OF EVS INTO AUTOMOTIVE MAINSTREAM "Global tech market advisory firm ABI Research sees growth in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in 2021. ABI Research’s whitepaper “68 Technology Trends That Will Shape 2021,” says that EV owners will experience the shift of environmentally conscious motorists to “typical automotive consumers.” In this regard, original equipment manufacturer (OEMs) will need to develop more innovative approaches to the life cycle management of EVs." according to BackendNews.com: “This transition from niche to the mainstream will be built on the introduction of low-cost EV models that satisfy the typical mileage requirements at an acceptable price point,” said James Hodgson, principal analyst, Smart Mobility and Automotive at ABI Research. “Smart charging technologies, support for occasional Direct Current (DC) fast charging, and battery management will be critical in supporting mainstream consumers in their transition from ICEs to EV ownership.” https://backendnews.net/2021-marks-entry-of-evs-into-automotive-mainstream-abi-research-says/ KOREA’S EV MARKET POISED FOR TAKE-OFF IN 2021 "For South Korea’s electric vehicle business, 2020 apparently served as a turning point with global players such as Tesla on the up and up and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic raising the alarm about environmental pollution by internal combustion engines. The number of newly registered passenger EVs here came to 32,268 as of November, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association." according to The Korea Herald: "On the export front, EVs logged 112,254 units in accumulated figures as of end-November, up 67.2 percent from a year earlier. the Environment Ministry has outlined the EV subsidy program for this year, saying that it will continue to provide the allowance for car priced below 60 million won ($55,147), while halving the amount for those priced 60 million won or more. Luxury models that are priced at 90 million won or more will likely be exempted from the fiscal support. he nation’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor is set to roll out the Ioniq 5, its crossover utility vehicle that adopts an EV-exclusive platform E-GMP. As the expected market price comes to 50 million won, the model is likely to appeal to potential purchasers." http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20210103000154 NO DRIVER’S LICENSE TO RIDE THIS ELECTRIC BIKE "In keeping with the ‘eco’ wave that is sweeping across the country, a Hyderabad-based startup named Atumobile has launched an electric bike that can go 100 kilometers on a single charge. Its user does not need a driver’s license either as it is a low-speed motorcycle that has been certified by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT)." reports The Better India.con: "The ATUM 1.0 is a performance-oriented bike that is designed like a vintage cafe-racer bike. It weighs 35 kilograms but has a sturdy build and goes at a maximum speed of 25 km/ hour. Prakash Choudhary, a well-known YouTuber, who tests and reviews two-wheelers, tried out the ATUM 1.0 early in October 2020. He said that it is a unique design introduced to the Indian market, and the Electric Bike resembles a regular motorcycle in “every way except for the speed”." DRIVING THREE OF JCB'S FINEST EARTH MOVERS "Once I’ve got a basic grip of its controls, I discover the 19C-1E is as capable of scooping up rubble and scurrying around on its tracks as I imagine its fossil-fuelled equivalent, the 19C-1, to be. Just like an electric car, torque is instant, resulting in effortless shovelling. Its four lithium ion batteries pack enough power to last a full working shift and can be rapid-charged in 2.5 hours." reviews Autocar: "Not only can the 1E work outdoors but it can do so at night without disturbing anyone. Its biggest advantage, though, is that it can work in emissions-sensitive environments and inside buildings without requiring expensive air extraction systems.” It’s a proper little mole. And flicking a switch brings its two tracks closer together, enabling me to drive it down a narrow ramp. Try doing that in a Tesla." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/new-digs-driving-three-jcbs-finest-earth-movers You can listen to all 950 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. LUCID COMPLETE FACTORY BUILD "Lucid Motors officially completed the construction the first phase of its Lucid AMP-1 (Advanced Manufacturing Plant - 1) factory in Casa Grande, Arizona - within a year since the company broke ground on the 590-acre site on December 2, 2019." says InsideEVs: "The plant, at its current stage, will have an initial capacity of 30,000 units of the Lucid Air model annually "to supply global markets, beginning with North America. Lucid is now busy with the commissioning of production equipment and intends to start series production of customer cars in Spring 2021. Before that happens, over the next few months, Lucid will build production-representative versions of the Air, fine-tuning its production line. In total, four phases are planned through 2028 (the square footage of the factory will expand from 999,000 square feet to 5.1 million square feet). The final form will have the manufacturing capacity of up to 400,000 electric cars annually (multiple models)." [audio for podcast] Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO, Lucid Motors said: “We broke ground on the 590-acre Lucid AMP-1 site in Casa Grande, Arizona, on December 2, 2019, and slightly less than a year later we have completed the first purpose-built EV factory in North America. The effort and agility demonstrated by this team is truly astounding, as we’re already commissioning equipment compatible with the Lucid manufacturing system to start production of the next-generation EV, the Lucid Air, in just a few months." Diess, who defected from BMW in 2015, and helped Volkswagen to reform after its diesel scandal with an $87 billion electric vehicle investment plan, has grown frustrated with German labor leaders blocking cost cuts. labor representatives control half the seats on the board of directors and local politicians have a 20% voting stake, allowing them to vote down significant strategic reform proposals." BEVs: 73,257 " says INsideEVs: "After ten months of 2020, close to 919,000 new plug-in passenger cars were registered in Europe, which is 9.5% of the total volume (5.1% falls on BEVs)! With two more months to be added, Europe might end at over 1.2 million." EUROPEAN FAVOURITE MODELS "This time the top model was the Volkswagen ID.3, which is its second month on top. ID.3 logged 10,584 new registrations. Interesting is that 7,911 of those were in just three countries: the Netherlands (2,789), Germany (2,647) and Norway (2,475). Now hacker “green,” who has been revealing new Tesla features found in software updates, believes that the automaker is working on letting owners remote livestream what their cars see with their Autopilot cameras. Tesla owners can already have an extensive look at the status of their vehicles, including the doors open or close, same for windows, charge port, and more. Now they are going to be able to see around their vehicles even if no Sentry Mode event has been activated." @greentheonly: "Well, the remote camera viewing seems to be in the wings, whenever they’ll drop it in 2020.48 or if they’ll postpone it again — I don’t know." https://electrek.co/2020/11/28/tesla-owners-remotely-view-what-autopilot-cameras-can-see/. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LUCID: DON'T CALL US "TESLA KILLERS" "With a brand-new, state-of-the-art factory nearing completion in the Southwest desert and an energy-dense battery pack using cylindrical cells, it's all-too tempting to set up a rivalry between Lucid Motors and Tesla. Heck, it's a trope that we've been guilty of using in the past." says Ars Technica: "But it's a bad take, according to Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and CTO. "Please don't describe us as a Tesla killer," he told me. "The world's big enough that we can both thrive and prosper alongside each other.". the Air will use a 900V electrical architecture, higher than even the Porsche Taycan. Rawlinson said that the Air has also moved to a new in-house silicon carbide inverter, as well as a switch from induction to permanent magnet motors front and rear. The Air's cylindrical lithium-ion cells will be made by LG Chem, but Lucid has designed and will build the packs itself. And Formula E has contributed to the management of the packs—Lucid supplies batteries to all the teams in that race series. The company's experience in Formula E has taught it a lot about predictive modeling of degradation." Peter Rawlinson was VP on Vehicle Engineering at Tesla before 2013. He said: "They're our own design, which is very innovative—they've got very low cogging torque, so ultra-efficient. We've got our own epicyclic reduction transmission, our own differential, all which is super-innovative, state of the art. The rotor will spin to 20,000rpm, and each of those in standard form is rated at 600hp (447kW)," he said, adding that the combined motor, gearbox, differential, and inverter weighs in at just 160lbs (73kg). The key metric is volumetric power density, which is creeping up very close to 17kW per liter," Rawlinson told me. "And I think that's unprecedented—that's twice as good as any competitor out there that I'm aware of. That's a cornerstone of what we've done with LG Chem now in our production supply agreement. We've worked with them to help develop the cell chemistry to a much higher standard, particularly making it degrade less as a consequence of repeated fast charging. That's important because the 900V architecture has been developed very much with our fast-charge network partner Electrify America in mind." The same strategy was used by the company’s engineers and test drivers in November last year, and they’ve done it again. This time around, however, they’ve disguised the all-electric crossover to look like a Kia." says Motor1.com: "According to preliminary information, power will be provided by two electric motors for a combined output of approximately 302 horsepower. The battery electric vehicle should be capable of covering up to 310 miles (500 kilometers) in the WLTP test at a single charge, which will be around 277 miles in the EPA evaluation." https://www.motor1.com/news/428784/vw-id4-spied-again/ 2021 TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME VS 2020 FORD ESCAPE PHEV SPEC COMPARISON Price Ford: SE PHEV retails for $33,040, while the others are priced at $35,620 and $38,835 respectively. RAV4: Pricing has not yet been shared though we assume it will start around the $40k mark in the US, and somewhere between $47,000 and $50,000 in Canada. "The Toyota RAV4 Prime is meant to do it all. The Prime is based on the Hybrid’s 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle engine however the hybrid is further boosted by the more powerful motor-generators and new high-capacity 17.8-kWh Lithium-Ion battery increase system output to 302-horsepower, from 219." says Motor Illustrated: "Part of the setup is an electric motor on the rear axle that has no physical link to the front. This second motor is standard on all RAV4 Hybrid and Prime thus all are AWD. Performance is plentiful with a 0-100 km/h time of only 6.2 seconds (0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds). Fun fact: This makes the RAV4 Prime the second fastest accelerating Toyota after the GR Supra. The combined fuel consumption rating of 2.6Le/100km, or 90 MPGe. The battery-only range is 67 kilometers, or 42 miles. The 2020 Ford Escape PHEV is different in that it is FWD only, contrary to the Hybrid version, which will prove to be an obstacle for much of Canada and the Northern regions of the US. It too is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine and it, with the associated electric motor, produces a total system output of 221-horsepower. The 14.4-kWh battery-only range is rated at least 48 kilometers in Canada, or 37 miles in the US." The high-speed electric vehicle charging network will also announce an additional eight charging station locations expected to open throughout the province by the end of this year." says Tom Molougney for InsideEVs: "Electrify Canada already has four charging station sites open in Ontario, with fifteen more in the planning stage in Ontario and Quebec, so it's good to see the western part of the country finally getting some love also. Electrify Canada's first phase of deployment includes the installation of a total of 32 charging station sites. Those include the nineteen in Quebec and Ontario and thirteen in Alberta and British Colombia." https://insideevs.com/news/428806/electrify-canada-expands-british-columbia/ TESLA RECEIVES APPROVAL TO BECOME AN ELECTRIC UTILITY PROVIDER IN THE UK "Tesla has officially been granted an electricity generation license in the United Kingdom, in response to the electric car maker’s application last April. Reports indicate that the approval paves the way for Tesla to establish a virtual power plant in the region, which would be managed by its custom Autobidder software, a real-time trading and control platform that enables power producers to monetize battery assets." says Simon at TEslarati: "The UK’s recent approval for Tesla’s application is a noteworthy milestone for Tesla Energy, whose potential remains largely untapped. Tesla Energy is a big business, and it builds on two of the company’s most prominent strengths: software and batteries. This is one of the reasons why Tesla’s big battery in South Australia, the Hornsdale Power Reserve, has been so successful. The massive Powerpack farm is managed by Autobidder, the same system that the company is reportedly poised to utilize in the UK." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-energy-utility-provider-application-uk-approved/ FORD MUSTANG MACH-E CUSTOMERS TO RECEIVE 250 KWH ELECTRIFY AMERICA CREDIT Ford Mustang Mach-E owners will receive 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging through FordPass Rewards at Electrify America fast-charging stations to kick-start their electric vehicle experience with Ford. For Mustang Mach-E owners with the extended-range battery, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast- charging energy is equal to more than three fill-ups. For standard-range battery models, the 250 kilowatt-hours of fast charging energy is equal to more than five fill-ups. This is in addition to the two years of complimentary access Mustang Mach-E customers automatically receive to the recently expanded FordPass Charging Network for easy pay-as-you-go charging. Electrify America’s network, part of the FordPass Charging Network, offers the largest number of high-powered public charging stations on the market today. 100 KWH TESLA MODEL 3 APPEARS ONLINE "We learned late last year from Twitter user @greentheonly that Tesla’s Model 3 firmware had contained references to a 100 kWh battery pack since at least March of 2019. Speculation was interesting at the time, but no Model 3 vehicles had been found to include that size battery pack." writes The Street.com: "That may have changed today, with Twitter user @zeus7f1 sharing a screenshot of a Tesla Model 3 display in Factory Mode. While a screenshot like this could be easily faked, the pack size is listed as 100 kWh here." 33% more energy. Long LONG Range? @greentheonly: I know they exist. Was hoping to get direct access to one soon, but it looks like you beat me to it ;) Elon took to Twitter to DENY the pack was in development. So...it's done?! Show #777 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 13th May 2020. FORD MUSTANG MACH-E WILL SUPPORT TESLA-LIKE OVER-THE-AIR UPDATES "Over-the-air updates aren't totally uncommon these days, but Tesla is often the poster child for the function. The electric carmaker very often pushes new updates ranging from performance improvements or even karaoke support via an OTA software update." says CNET: "Ford won't be left behind, and it detailed near identical functions included in its upcoming electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E. On Tuesday, the automaker said OTA updates will be a big part of the SUV and noted it's almost certain the Mustang Mach-E will have features it didn't possess when it left the factory. it promised these updates will often occur without the owner noticing for a super-seamless presentation. Mustang Mach-E drivers can set a particular time for the updates to occur, and many will take fewer than two minutes to install. Some will even be instant once the driver silently fires the electric SUV up." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-mustang-mach-e-tesla-over-the-air-updates/ CITROËN Ë-JUMPY TO HIT MARKETS THIS YEAR "Citroën has just announced it is expecting to launch the all-electric version of the Jumper city van – called the ë-Jumpy – by the end of this year. This should be followed by the fully-electric electric Berlingo panel van in 2021." according to electrive: "The fully-electric Jumpy has a payload of up to 1,275 kilograms and can be ordered with a trailer hitch with a towing capacity of up to one tonne for extra loads. Citroën is offering the van in three lengths. the Citroën ë-Jumpy is offered with either a 50 kWh battery for a range of up to 230 kilometres or a 75 kWh battery for a maximum of 330 kilometres according to WLTP." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/12/citroe%CC%88n-e%CC%88-jumpy-to-hit-markets-this-year/ WELTMEISTER PRESENTS MAVEN, A CONCEPT CAR WITH 497 MILES OF RANGE "There is probably no car company name that is more self-confident than Weltmeister. When we wrote about it back in 2016, we said Weltmeister meant “World Champion,” but another possible translation is “master of the world.” We have no idea if its latest concept car, the Maven, could rule or teach anyone anything in the electric car world, but it will surely turn some heads with its tasteful design." says InsideEVs: "The Maven also has attractive promises, such as an 800 km (497 mi) range – even if under NEDC standards – and level 4 autonomy, which is just a promise even for the companies that claim to be closer to offer it than anyone else." From the comments section: "Having tested 4 Chines EVs now, and going to test another one next week - there is a real momentum going on. They are quick learners, and the quickest in the world to do changes. Improving step by step in a very quick pace. They are good at copying features from existing products, and they they use that and add some engineering to improve, and integrate it to the product better in the next generation. You see this trend in almost all medium to higher tech products." https://insideevs.com/news/421522/weltmeister-maven-concept-497-mi-range/ VERGE TS ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE HAS 737 LB-FT OF TORQUE, HUB-LESS REAR WHEEL "Finland-based Verge detailed an electric motorcycle named TS with a head-turning design and a jaw-dropping specifications sheet. It's cheaper than the Harley-Davidson LiveWire but not quite as quick to 60 mph." repors Autoblog: "The motor generates 107 horsepower and a volcano-awakening 737 pound-feet of torque; the latter figure is nearly on par with a Bentley Mulsanne's. Accelerating from zero to 60 mph takes under four seconds, and if you're still on the saddle (and on both wheels) you can keep going until the speedometer displays 111 mph. Verge hasn't said much about the battery pack, though it pegs riding range at 124 miles on the highway and 186 miles in the city. Charging it takes four hours when using the on-board charger or 50 minutes with a quick charger." Verge priced the TS at €24,990, which represents about $27,000. https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/11/verge-ts-electric-motorcycle/ LUCID TEASES A GLIMPSE OF A FLEET OF ITS EVS IN ITS BAY AREA HEADQUARTERS "Lucid Motors Inc. can't road test the small fleet of prototypes of electric vehicles it has assembled in the Bay Area, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. But it posted a blog and video on Monday that tease the Lucid Air vehicles that it plans to challenge Tesla Motors Inc. with." reports Biz Journals: "Some of the tests it did before the pandemic included winter testing in the frozen northern reaches of Minnesota and a shuttle trip between San Francisco and Los Angeles on a single charge. Unlike Tesla, which makes its vehicles at a factory in Fremont and another in China, Lucid has no plans to do its factory production in the Bay Area. It is building a massive factory in Arizona to handle that. Lucid employs more than 1,000 and is headed by former Tesla Inc. chief engineer Peter Rawlinson. The company's principal investor is Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which committed to providing $1 billion of capital in September 2018." https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2020/05/11/tesla-rival-teases-a-glimpse-of-a-fleet-of-its-evs.html BIGGEST US SOLAR PROJECT APPROVED IN NEVADA DESPITE CRITICS "The Trump administration announced final approval Monday of the largest solar energy project in the U.S. and one of the biggest in the world despite objections from conservationists who say it will destroy thousands of acres of habitat critical to the survival of the threatened Mojave desert tortoise in Nevada." says AP News: "The $1 billion Gemini solar and battery storage project about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Las Vegas is expected to produce 690 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 260,000 households — and annually offset greenhouse emissions of about 83,000 cars. In addition to the tortoise, the site is home to two types of rare milkvetch plants, kit foxes, burrowing owls and wildflowers, said Laura Cunningham, a biologist with the Western Watersheds Project." https://apnews.com/3182e2ca95d3f2cbfff23ebec3c36f55 ABB TO SUPPLY E-TRUCK CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE IN NORWAY "ABB has agreed with Norway’s largest food wholesaler ASKO and its owner NorgesGruppen to supply the charging infrastructure for its growing fleet of electric vehicles." writes electrive.com: "ASKO says it uses 600 trucks a day and has set itself the goal of achieving zero-emission food transport by 2026. To this end, ABB charging stations are now to be installed at distribution centres throughout Norway to enable the greater use of battery-electric trucks. the first ABB HVC 150C (150 kW) high-performance chargers are already in operation at the ASKO distribution centre in Oslo, where they will initially charge two Scania battery-electric trucks. The two vehicles are part of a fleet of 55 electric trucks ordered from Scania that each has a payload of ten tonnes and a range of up to 120 kilometres." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/11/abb-to-supply-e-truck-charging-infrastructure-in-norway/ CAR DEALERSHIPS WILL FACE ONLINE HSE INSPECTION TO PROVE THEY ARE SAFE "All car dealerships will have to complete an online HSE inspection to prove that they are safe to reopen – and face random spot checks in the future to ensure they are complying." says Car Dealre MAgazine: "The government said the new Covid-19 secure guidance will work alongside current health and safety rules, rather than with the introduction of new laws for protecting workers. It said businesses that want to reopen will need to carry out a risk assessment with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) online tools and place the certificate on display. Key points include maintaining social distancing – with employers expected to redesign workspaces to maintain this – staggering start times, creating one-way systems for workers and protecting staff who may be vulnerable." https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/car-dealerships-will-face-government-inspection-prove-safe-reopen-random-spot-checks/192293 QUESTION OF THE WEEK …it’s back! Show #733 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 30th March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW: HOPE IS RETURNING Just two months ago, China was considered the center of the corona pandemic. Meanwhile, there are signs of relaxation, with the car industry also slowly returning to normality. Production of vehicles and components has resumed at 22 of 24 Volkswagen locations. Volkswagen Group China sales figures are showing signs of improvement following the Corona-related crash. The overall market trend is pointing slightly upwards. More than 95 percent of all Volkswagen Group dealers have reopened their showrooms. Customer frequency is around 60 percent compared with normal phases. The Volkswagen brand alone is represented in China by more than 2,000 dealers. There are 430 dealerships at Audi, 470 at ŠKODA and 120 at Porsche. Around 40 percent of the planned investments alone will go into electric mobility. This year, for example, production of new electric models based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB) is due to start at plants in Anting (SAIC VOLKSWAGEN) and Foshan (FAW-Volkswagen). Both plants are specially designed for the production of purely electric cars. From 2025, Volkswagen Group plans to sell 1.5 million electric cars per year in China. This is also based on the introduction of the Volkswagen ID. Family, which will be launched this year. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/03/on-the-chinese-market--hope-is-returning.html TESLA REOPENS WUHAN STORE Vice President of Tesla China shared a message online, user Grace Tao Lin: "“I received a video from my colleague in Wuhan before the meeting in the morning, and the Guoguang store was officially resumed. Wuhan friends went out to work for the first time in two months.” Teslarati says: "Wuhan has allowed many businesses to reopen amidst the virus, as authorities lifted the mandatory quarantine that lasted over two months. Wuhan’s government has permitted retail locations and malls to resume business to revive the world’s second-largest economy. While residents are now being allowed to go out and shop in local malls and shopping centers, they are required to stay within the Hubei province that the city of Wuhan is located in until April 8." TESLA GIGAFACTORY EMPLOYEE TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 "An employee at Tesla’s sprawling battery plant outside of Reno, Nevada, has tested positive for COVID-19 according to internal communications obtained by CNBC. KRNV NBC Reno previously reported on the matter on Sunday." writes Lauran Kolodny for CNBC. From Tesla: ""If there is a future confirmed case, our protocol at Tesla is to interview the individual, investigate their whereabouts, and speak to their managers to determine to the best of their ability who had contact with the individual at work. We will notify individuals who had direct and extended contact and tell them to self-quarantine to watch for symptoms. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns."" CHINESE EV MANUFACTURER IS NOW WORLD’S BIGGEST FACE-MASK MAKER "As the virus spread throughout China in January, BYD began re-engineering its production lines to allow the company to produce face masks and disinfectants. The company says it was able to get production of these items up and running in just two weeks. A face-mask production line requires about 1,300 parts for various gears and rollers, and BYD was able to source most of these in-house." reports Ride.tech: "Currently, the company produces roughly five million face masks and 300,000 bottles of hand sanitizer per day. BYD claims this makes it the largest producer of face masks in the world." MUSTANG MACH-E DEVELOPMENT DOESN'T STOP FOR CORONAVIRUS "Ford Motor Co. engineers are keeping the Mustang Mach-E program on track to launch this fall even as the coronavirus pandemic disrupts manufacturing, sales and other business." says The Detroit News: "As they work from home, the developers have traded team rides in prototype vehicles for recorded video, labs for garages, co-workers for children and office conversation for virtual chats. But the team developing Ford's first battery-electric Mustang SUV says it remains focused on completing the base model's final evaluations and continuing work on other versions." Aleyna Kapur, a Mach-E calibrator: ""If there is a different calibration we want to try, I will jump into the vehicle, the flash goes in, I will take the car around the block, come back, look at the data, and see how things reacted. Maybe I'll get back in the vehicle, tweak a few things, and come back to the desk. It's right there. TESLA MODEL Y GETS OFFICIAL 315 MILE RANGE "The Tesla Model Y has now officially received its official range and efficiency rating from the Environmental Protection Authority, confirming that it will have 507km (315 miles) driving range and that it is the most efficient crossover SUV now available in the US." reports The Driven.io: "Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk said at the company’s fourth quarter earnings call in January that the Model Y’s range had been increased thanks to Tesla’s engineering team and that it was now the most efficient SUV in terms of energy use. The figures – which it should be noted have only been released so far for the relatively more power-hungry Performance variant – have been published on the US EPA’s fuel economy website as Tesla prepares to begin deliveries of the Model Y by the end of March." Eric at InsideEVs picks up on something I've talked about before, and that's how size of wheels makes an impact: "Currently, the EPA doesn't list which wheel size it posted results for in regards to the Model Y, but we're guessing it's the smaller 19-inch choice (we'll point out that the Performance variant lists 21-inch wheels as standard, but in the build process it only shows 19-inch wheel) due to the how the 315-mile figure compares to the various wheel options found on the Model 3 Performance. City: 334 miles, Highway: 291 miles, Combined: 315 miles. We should note that the EPA says that the combined range was voluntarily lowered from 316 miles. This practice seems quite common on most Tesla vehicles" https://thedriven.io/2020/02/07/tesla-model-y-gets-official-507km-range-and-confirmed-as-most-efficient-suv/ https://insideevs.com/news/397072/tesla-model-y-epa-range/ LUCID AIR TEASED, WILL HAVE A 900-VOLT SYSTEM AND OVER 400 MILES OF RANGE "A handful of details about the production-spec Lucid Air have surfaced prior to the car’s premiere at April’s New York Auto Show, with the company also releasing a teaser of the car." says CarScoops: "In the video, we see some of the production model’s details while also learning that the launch model will be named “Dream Edition”.Separately, Electrek recently had the opportunity to sit down with Lucid chief executive and chief technology officer Peter Rawlinson about the Air. For those that don’t know, Rawlinson was the chief engineer of the Tesla Model S program from 2009 to 2012 and is fully aware of what it takes to create an all-electric vehicle. The first thing revealed by Rawlinson about the road-ready Lucid Air is that it will have an “over” 900-volt system, far superior to the 400-volt system used by Tesla or even the 800-volt system of the Porsche Taycan. The executive added the Air will be capable of traveling in excess of 400 miles (643 km) on a single charge based on their EPA cycle estimation. Production of the Air will be handled by the marque’s factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. The first models should roll out of the factory in the final quarter of the year." https://www.carscoops.com/2020/02/lucid-air-teased-will-have-a-900-volt-system-and-over-400-miles-of-range/ NEW TESLA PATENT RE-IMAGINES WHAT A STEERING WHEEL MIGHT DO "One of the main factors behind Tesla’s success lies in the company’s willingness to think outside of the box. We saw this with the digital dash introduced on the Model S and, more recently, with the lack of an instrument cluster on the Model 3. Say what you will about Tesla, but the company isn’t afraid to re-imagine well-established design principles as it pertains to the driving experience." reports BGR.com: "In light of that, keeping an eye on Tesla patents is always interesting because it can sometimes provide us with sneak previews of features upcoming Tesla vehicles might bring to the table. The patent in question, which details a steering wheel with two touchscreen interfaces on either side, reads in part: The user interface of the steering wheel may additionally include indicators provided at a lower portion of the steering wheel indicative of a selected gear engagement of the vehicle. For example, the user interface may provide illuminated indications of engagement of Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive modes. Additionally or optionally, the steering wheel may include RFID detection and NFC activation functionality." https://bgr.com/2020/02/06/tesla-design-patent-steering-wheel-touchscreen/ OPEL DRASTICALLY REDUCES AMPERA-E PRICES IN THE NETHERLANDS "Shortly before the market launch of the Corsa-e, Opel has significantly reduced the prices for the all-electric Ampera-e in the Netherlands. The Business version is now available from 34,149 euros instead of 44,799 euros." reports electrive: "This is apparently to propel the sale of the remaining existing electric cars, as Opel Netherlands itself makes a note of a “limited stock”. Since the sale of Opel to PSA in 2017, things had become very quiet around the Ampera-e. The sister model of the Chevrolet Bolt is based on technology from General Motors, which also builds it for Opel in the USA. Since Chevrolet was able to sell the Bolt well in the US, there was constant speculation about how many units of the electric car the US company would make for Opel. In 2019 as a whole, only 120 Ampera-e were newly registered in Germany. On the German Opel website, the Ampera-e is still listed, but is also marked “stock vehicles only”." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/05/opel-drastically-reduces-apera-e-prices-in-the-netherlands/ 2020 HYUNDAI SONATA HYBRID ARRIVES WITH SOLAR ROOF OPTION "The Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter I4 engine, producing 150 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai's Active Shift Control tech, that helps smooth out gear changes. A small electric motor provides a supplemental 51 hp, and Hyundai says total system output is rated at 189 hp." reports CNET: "However, neither of those competitors has the Sonata's coolest feature: solar roof panels. Hyundai says the solar panels directly charge the 12-volt and hybrid batteries, with an electrical output of 205 watts. Assuming your car gets enough sun on the daily, Hyundai says the solar energy could provide up to 800 miles' worth of electric drive energy per year." 2.19 miles per day. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2020-hyundai-sonata-hybrid-solar-roof-chicago-auto-show/ NOVEL “AERODYNAMIC WHEELS” FOR THE PURELY ELECTRIC BMW IX3. the wheels and their aerodynamic flow influence the overall vehicle efficiency by up to 30%. That is why a further developed technology of the BMW Aerodynamic Wheel is making its debut together with the BMW iX3, whose market launch is planned for 2020: The new combination of aluminum base wheel and individually designed inserts While reducing drag for about 5% compared to a conventionally powered BMW X3 the new Aerodynamic Wheels are not only more efficient but also lighter than previous ones: Thanks to optimum airflow around the wheel arches, the wheels are 15% lighter than the aerodynamic wheels previously fitted by BMW. Their benefits in terms of aerodynamics and weight have the overall effect of lowering power consumption for the BMW iX3 by another 2% in the European WLTP test cycle The wheels’ appearance can be varied in numerous different ways, enabling a vast variety of possibilities for the design of wheels on future models. The new Aerodynamic Wheels will also feature on the BMW iNext and BMW i4, which are going to be introduced in 2021. To fit the lightweight base wheel, the inserts are precision-moulded and integrated into the outside of the wheel between the spokes. Thus, they are highly effective in reducing wheel-arch air turbulence – and therefore aerodynamic drag. https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0305189EN/novel-%E2%80%9Caerodynamic-wheels%E2%80%9D-for-the-purely-electric-bmw-ix3?language=en A NISSAN LEAF JUST FINISHED A 230-MILE AUTONOMOUS TRIP IN BRITAIN Kristen at Jalopnik says: "I’m firm on my belief that fully autonomous driving is decades away, but that doesn’t mean folks aren’t hard at work, attempting to bring the it to reality quickly. A Nissan Leaf just finished a long, autonomous journey in Britain, which is neat." "A modified Leaf just went on a 230-mile sojourn, autonomously, from Nissan’s European technical center in southern England to its Sunderland factory in northeast England, reports Reuters. It used eight laser scanners, seven cameras, a radar and six electronic control units in the trunk and drove alongside “conventional motorists on country lanes and motorways.” https://jalopnik.com/a-nissan-leaf-just-finished-a-230-mile-autonomous-trip-1841488376 NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs? Show #453 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 24th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Thank you to Freejoule aka James (I”'m super busy with my day job and don't get much time to catch up on the EV news. TESLA’S Q1 2019 FINANCIAL RESULTS AND EARNINGS CALL Simon at Teslarati looks ahead to the Q1 results: "Expectations are quite tempered for Tesla this quarter, following the company’s less-than-expected production and delivery numbers in Q1. After a record number of production and deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2018, Tesla’s electric car deliveries fell by around 30%, while total production numbers fell by around 12%. TSLA stock has been weighed down by these results since their release in early April, with the company off around 20% this year," https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-earnings-call-what-to-expect/ RIVIAN GETS $500 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM FORD "Rivian just became reality with this major investment from the U.S.' sales leader in trucks." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Following the major investment made by Amazon, Ford has announced a $500 million investment into Rivian. Rivian, the maker of the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, is solely focused on electric adventure vehicles. For now, that's limited to the truck and SUV, but in the future, several more models are planned. An additional note on the investment is that the "companies have agreed to work together to develop an all-new, next-generation battery electric vehicle for Ford’s growing EV portfolio using Rivian’s skateboard platform." Ford says that the Rivian deal and new offering are "in addition to Ford’s existing plans to develop a portfolio of battery electric vehicles" and notes that "Ford already has confirmed two key fully electric vehicles: a Mustang-inspired crossover coming in 2020 and a zero-emissions version of the best-selling F-150 pickup." VErge says: "Ford has decided what kind of vehicle it will build on Rivian’s platform, but it declined to specify. Just two months ago, Rivian announced a $700 million investment round led by Amazon. Rivian was also in talks with GM, but the startup reportedly backed out of the potential exclusive deal." Engadget says: "Rivian stressed that it would remain an independent company, but acknowledged that Ford's automotive president Joe Hinrichs was joining its board of directors." CNBC looked at the specs of the R1T and R1S: "Both trucks have 754 horsepower and can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in three seconds, with a top speed of 125 miles per hour. They also have three battery capacity options: 105 kilowatt-hour (kWH), which can travel up to 240 miles on one charge; 135 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 310 miles; and 180 kilowatt-hour that can travel up to 410 miles." https://insideevs.com/news/346329/rivian-ford-investment-500-million/ A NEW TESLA MODEL S CAN NOW DRIVE FROM LOS ANGELES TO SAN FRANCISCO ON A SINGLE CHARGE "Tesla has announced that it has extended the range of its Model S vehicle to 370 miles and Model X to 325 miles on a single charge " reports TechCrunch: "Both models now have the newest drive unit technology, Tesla said. Combining an optimized permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor, silicon carbide power electronics and improved lubrication, cooling, bearings and gear designs the new cars can achieve better than 93 percent efficiency, Tesla said in a statement." https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/23/a-new-tesla-model-s-or-x-can-now-drive-from-los-angeles-to-san-francisco-on-a-single-charge/ Whilst Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com reports: "Along with this, getting your charge will take less time than ever before. Plugged into the new Supercharger V3, the vehicles will feed on that sweet electro-juice at a peak rate of 200 kW. On older, existing Supercharger stations, the vehicles can now utilize 145 kW charging. According to Tesla this accounts for a 50% improvement in charge speeds. The suspension is also being updated with "fully-adaptive damping, giving it an ultra-cushioned feel". Tesla says the new upgrades will constantly adapt to driver behavior and road conditions "automatically softening for more pronounced road inputs and firming for aggressive driving"." https://insideevs.com/news/346209/tesla-model-s-x-upgrade-more-range-efficiency/ EXTREME E TO PARTNER WITH SPARK RACING TECHNOLOGY Extreme E has joined forces with motorsport manufacturer Spark Racing Technology to engineer, develop and assemble the all-new electric SUV model for the pioneering off-road racing series. Spark Racing Technology will create and construct the common package with strict specification parts, before handing over the homologated framework to each team – allowing competitors to test and develop their own powertrain and bodywork. Prototype testing is scheduled to take place in July this year together with founding partner Continental Tyres, with the teams receiving the first delivery of 12 cars from Spark Racing Technology in March 2020. Teams will later have the opportunity to put the Extreme E cars through their paces with collective group testing in the summer, before hopping on board the newly-renovated RMS St. Helena for the first race in January 2021. EV STARTUP LUCID MOTORS APPOINTS FORMER TESLA VP OF VEHICLE ENGINEERING AS CEO "Luxury electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Peter Rawlinson as CEO, effective immediately. He will retain his role as CTO where is responsible for all of Lucid's design and engineering activities, including the automaker's first car—the Lucid Air ultra-luxury electric sedan." according to FutureCar.com: "Rawlinson joined Lucid in 2013 after working at Tesla. Rawlinson served as Vice President of Vehicle Engineering and Chief Engineer of the Tesla Model S, working under Elon Musk. Prior to Tesla, he was Chief Engineer at Lotus Cars and Principal Engineer at Jaguar Cars." https://www.futurecar.com/3154/EV-Startup-Lucid-Motors-Appoints-Former-Tesla-VP-of-Vehicle-Engineering-as-CEO NEXT-GEN PORSCHE BOXSTER, CAYMAN GOING PURE ELECTRIC It’s probably only a matter of time before Porsche will electrify its core sports car, the 911. Not only that, but it looks like the Boxster and Cayman duo is also going to get a charging port as a new report from Autocar suggests the Stuttgart-based marque has green-lighted pure electric versions of the entry-level sports cars." writes Adrian for Motor1.com: "Porsche chairman Oliver Blume has revealed in an interview with Autocar the company is already testing pure electric 718 prototypes while working on a hybrid 718. He went on to mention they haven’t made up their minds yet about whether the cars will be getting plug-in hybrid or hybrid setups, but the plan is to sell Boxster and Cayman EVs alongside electrified versions of the two models. According to the same report, the entirely electric models are expected to switch to Porsche’s new PPE platform while the hybrid / plug-in hybrid derivatives could stick to the current underpinnings, albeit in an updated form that allows electrification." https://www.motor1.com/news/346212/next-porsche-boxster-cayman-electric/ DAIMLER SAYS BATTERY-ELECTRIC TRUCKS KEY TO ZERO EMISSIONS COMMERCIAL TRANSPORT "Battery-electric vehicles are the key to zero-emission commercial transportation in North America, according to Daimler Trucks North America, which is moving forward with battery-electric vehicle commercialization, contending that hydrogen fuel cells aren’t ready for prime time."reports TruckingInfo.com today: "“The road to emissions-free transportation is going to be driven with battery-electric vehicles. I believe the future is electric,” said Roger Nielsen, president and CEO of DTNA, speaking to a crowd assembled in Long Beach for the ACT Expo April 24. The company announced it will begin converting its Portland manufacturing plant to produce electric Freightliners, “to enable rapid scale-up of thoroughly tested and validated electric vehicles,” it said in a release. Although DTNA’s vision of electric vehicles does not exclude fuel cells, he said, “I can see a glimpse of it over the horizon, but it will not be this generation of engineers who will be delivering it.”" https://www.truckinginfo.com/330460/daimler-says-battery-electric-trucks-key-to-zero-emissions-commercial-transport COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
