Getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus isn't as simple as it might sound, things have changed, prices are different, tools are better, the models run so much more smoothly, and the AML Nation is now here to help.  On this episode, we talk with Bill Ford who's always been a Model Railroader, but took time off for to pursue his career in punk rock and becoming an licensed electrician. Bill never actually lost his enthusiasm for the hobby but as with so many things, life got in the way and laying track was put on the back burner for a while. This is a great podcast about returning to a hobby that's seen significant changes over the last three decades. Enjoy!!

Saturday was an amazing day at Woodbine. The longest shot, Wicked Django won the Autumn Stakesat 24-1. A horse called Nobals won the Kennedy Road Stakes and needed huge cahones to get past Patches O'Houlihan. Earlier in the card, Sahin Civaci won 3 races as he has virtually clinched the riders' title at Woodbine. The 12th race was a mandatory Super Hi-5 payout. The winner was 79-1, and when no one correctly bet the first 5 horses, the payout for 4 was spectacular. Emma-Jayne Wilson joins us on the phone to talk about the terrible accident she sustained in October. Wilson, 43, vows she will ride again. Woodbine's Bill Ford explains the abundance of caution that the track employed, cancelling races after 3 horses died on November 9. At Chelmsford Race Course in England, how close did jockeys and horses come to catastrophe when the starting gate could not be moved off the track? And 71-year-old Keith Ballard, Australia's oldest jockey, wrote a Hollywood ending to his 55-year career.

Shoot us a Text. We're almost through the week, and we've got Steve Greenfield back with us today to help us understand why dealers are feeling a little pessimistic about Q3. Plus we'll discuss how Japan is investing heavily in EV battery production and have a little bit of nostalgia about a historic Mustang.Show Notes with links:Franchised dealers grew more pessimistic going into Q3, with a Cox Automotive poll revealing concerns about interest rates, the economy, and election uncertainty. The Dealer Sentiment Index fell below 50 for only the third time in its seven-year history, indicating negative expectations for the near future.Dealers rated their three-month outlook at 49, down from 52 the previous quarter, signaling waning confidence.Interest rates (67%), the economy (53%), and political uncertainty (49%) were the top concerns affecting franchised dealers.Jonathan Smoke said that with the exception of interest rates, today's economy suggests that the SAAR should be 17 million given demand. However, it currently sits at 15.4MProfitability also dipped, with dealers reporting a score of 43, well below pre-pandemic levels."To say that profits are today worse than they were before, I think, is thinking beyond new-vehicle gross margins and thinking about the other expenses that dealers have that are still being impacted by inflation and higher costs and higher interest rates, which make it very expensive to hold inventory," Smoke saidJapan is investing heavily to secure its electric vehicle battery supply chain, offering up to 350 billion yen ($2.4 B) in subsidies. The funding will boost production for companies like Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and Panasonic, aiming to increase the nation's storage battery capacity by 50%.The combined investment from the four automakers, along with Japanese government subsidies, totals over ¥944.6 billion ($6.58 billion)The goal is to increase Japan's battery production capacity from 80 GWh to 120 GWh annually.Toyota is leading Japan's EV battery push by developing next-gen solid-state and performance lithium-ion batteries, with plans to start production by 2026, Subaru and Mazda will partner with Panasonic for cylindrical lithium-ion battery production, while Nissan plans to produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries for mini-EVs by 2028."We hope these efforts will strengthen Japan's battery industry," said Ken Saito, Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry.Bill Ford and Jay Leno took a trip down memory lane in a classic piece of automotive history—the original pace car from the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Shoot us a Text.Four days away from ASOTU CON we're talking about Nissan's move to push Dealers to advertise below invoice. We also talk about the growing percentage of F150 Hybrids being sold, as well as the very first passenger test of an eVTOL in Abu Dhabi. As a triple digit days supply grows, Nissan is taking an unprecedented step to clear overflowing inventories by allowing dealers to advertise 2024 vehicles up to 10% below invoice, a first since the pandemic, with the Armada being advertised as low as 15% below.Dealers however, are concerned, feeling the burden of moving the vehicles has been shifted from Nissan to them, as Nisaan pulls back on direct incentives."Nissan is saying, 'We can't afford to be in the market, so you need to be,' " said one of several retailers interviewed, who requested not to be identified for fear of retaliation from the automaker. "The responsibility has been moved from the factory to us."With high floorplan costs, some dealers welcome the opportunity for more pricing flexibility to increase store traffic and reduce inventory. This aggressive pricing strategy could hurt Nissan's brand value long-term, mirroring problematic practices from the last decade. Many plan to use below-invoice pricing selectively, boosting profitability through finance, insurance deals, and upselling on features."This move provides more flexibility when warranted," says Nissan spokesperson Brian Brockman, highlighting the company's adaptive strategy to current market conditions.Ford is significantly increasing its production of hybrid vehicles, with CEO Jim Farley announcing that 20-25% of F-150 pickups are now hybrids. Following a freshening of the F-150 lineup, Ford aims to make the model the nation's top-selling hybrid. Hybrid sales overall have risen 47% in early 2024.Farley emphasized the importance of offering customers a choice between gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles, acknowledging slower-than-expected EV adoption.Ford is exploring advanced battery technologies like semisolid-state batteries, promising enhancements in the mid-2020s.Despite postponing some EV investments, Ford remains committed to electrification, with Bill Ford expressing continued enthusiasm for the segment.Further emphasizing their position, CEO Jim Farley said,"Our key strategy as a company is to give customers choice." eVTOL maker EHang recently made aviation history by completing the world's first passenger-carrying demo flight of its EH216-S eVTOL in Abu DhabiThe EH216-S, the first certified pilotless eVTOL to carry passengers, demonstrated its capabilities in front of distinguished guests, including Emirati royals and civil aviation authorities. It's a great week to be in the car biz as we discuss the latest movement in the UAW negotiations. We also take a look at the rising political rhetoric around EV's, before we weigh in on whether or not the Cybertruck is actually ‘bulletproof'. In their seventh offer since the beginning of the month, GM is claiming 'substantial movement' in its latest offer to UAW members, joining Stellantis in proposing a 23% wage hike. As the strike enters its sixth week, both automakers aim for over $40 per hour wages by 2027, reflecting industry shifts and pressures amid ongoing negotiations. This amount matches what Ford has already proposed earlier last week.UAW President Shawn Fain seemed to agree, saying the offer was “serious movement” as he reminded everyone that he could expand the strike at any moment. ”The bottom line is we've got cards left to play, and they've got money left to spend,” and continued that the UAW is after “not just a good contract, not just a record contract, but a contract that turns the tide.”Stating that this is the most significant offer ever proposed by GM to the UAW, the company emphasized their recognition of team members' dedication and contributions. "It's time to conclude negotiations, bring our team back, and focus on ensuring GM's success, securing quality U.S. jobs for many future decades.”Fain also took the opportunity to respond to Bill Ford's comments last week regarding Ford and the UAW banding together to beat ‘non-union' automakers by saying, “"The days of the UAW and Ford being a team to fight other companies are over.”The retail auto industry has found itself in the center of culture once again as EV adoption and government incentives have become a political campaigning point. Amid rising EV prices and labor strikes, President Biden's pro-EV stance faces challenges from Republican contenders, further polarizing the electric vehicle debate. In the U.S., for every five Democrats owning an EV, there are two Republicans, highlighting a political and ideological divide in electric vehicle adoption. The demographics of EV ownership also reveal an economic disparity: the median household income of EV buyers is $186,000, up from the typical new car buyers, $122kThat number is up recently from the $90k mark it had been for decadesLate last week, a post on the popular "Tesla owners silicon valley" account showcased Tesla's test-turned-publicity-stunt on the Cybertruck's bulletproof claims. Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the Al Capone-style barrage. Impressively, the vehicle's exterior resisted penetration, with his comment on the post “We emptied the entire drum magazine of a Tommy gun into the driver door Al Capone style. No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment.”Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

It's Tuesday and we're all in on the ups and downs of the day as we talk about Bill Ford's entry to the UAW strike conversation. We also talk about Hawaii's very effective campaign to curb catalytic converter theft, as well as the new Netflix experience centers that take a page out of Disney's playbookA new player has stepped out of the locker room in the ongoing UAW strike negotiations yesterday, as Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Co., publicly urged UAW leaders to end their month-long strike. Bill Ford has participated in every union negotiation since 1982 and said he is the most “pro-union leader in the industry.”Addressing the press from Ford's historic Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Mich, Ford said, "Choosing the right path is not just about Ford's future and our ability to compete. This is about the future of the American automobile industry. Toyota, Honda, Tesla and others are loving this strike because they know the longer it goes on, the better it is for them. They will win, and all of us will lose."UAW President Shawn Fain was quick to respond,, ““Bill Ford knows exactly how to settle this strike. ... He should call up Jim Farley, tell him to stop playing games and get a deal done. It's not the UAW and Ford against foreign automakers. It's autoworkers everywhere against corporate greed. If Ford wants to be the all-American auto company, they can pay all-American wages and benefits. Workers at Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and others are not the enemy — they're the UAW members of the future."As a side note, he has recently been photographed wearing a shirt that says, “Eat the rich.”Hawaii has seen a significant reduction in catalytic converter thefts after implementing a law that regulates their sale. A combination of legislation and practical implementation has led to a stark drop in thefts over the last year.Catalytic converters, which can fetch up to $1,500 at scrapyards, are commonly stolen in many states and now, Hawaii's law requires individuals selling catalytic converters to present photo ID and sign a declaration that the part wasn't stolen.Mark Yamauchi, the owner of Yama's Auto Care in Hawaii, commented on the significant decline in catalytic converter thefts following the implementation of new laws in the state. He stated, “I did maybe a couple this year. Before, I would do at least two or three a month.” Thefts dropped from over 1,600 in 2022 to just 119 in 2023. Following in the footsteps of entertainment giants like Disney, Netflix is set to launch "Netflix House" locations by 2025. These venues will offer merchandise, food, and activities inspired by its content, aiming to deepen fan immersion in the Netflix universe. These spaces are intended to promote new content rather than primarily generate revenue, similar to strategies employed by Disney and other studios.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
