In 2023, FuelCell Energy commenced operations of the company's Tri-gen system for Toyota North America at the Port of Long Beach, California, where neighboring communities have been significantly impacted by decades of emissions from the ships, trucks, locomotives, and cargo-handling equipment. Betsy Schaefer, FuelCell Energy's Chief Marketing & Sustainability Officer joins me for this SFP episode to discuss how the Tri-gen system produces renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen, and water from directed biogas. This will allow a reduction of air pollution in the neighboring communities and will avoid more than 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions from the power grid and more than six tons of grid Nitrogen Oxide gas each year. FuelCell Energy sees sustainability as an essential part of the company's business strategy. And Betsy joins me today to give us more details about the firm's sustainability strategy.

Today is Friday, Feb. 16 #1 – From ONE TOYOTA – Environmental engineer Amanda Young has worked for Toyota West Virginia for three years. She spoke to One Toyota about her role, why she's passionate about biodiversity and why you should always speak up. “Environmental work is unpredictable. However, my team and I are working every day to make sure Toyota West Virginia is always in compliance and meeting our goals. We physically inspect equipment, write reports and mitigate any issues as they arise,” Young said. She is part of the Region 1 team that assists non-manufacturing sites with their environmental compliance. She also works with the sustainability team through the biodiversity working group to try to effect change across Toyota North America to protect native species and help build native habitat. Young has found that women at Toyota are extremely supportive of each other. “I was nominated to attend the women's conference last year and met some amazing women who are still my friends to this day. We want to see each other succeed and be role models for others,” she said. The DNR plans to observe the hares in their natural habitat. The snowshoe hare can be spotted in the upper regions of the state, from Tucker and Grant counties to Greenbrier County. The snowshoe hare has always been a resident of the state, but a population influx in the 1940s increased their numbers. The snowshoe hare undergoes a color change in winter, from brown to white. Instead of burrowing underground like rabbits do, they inhabit dense, low areas on the ground and are active mainly at night. The research team uses trail cameras to record the hares and even collects their droppings. The droppings are unique to each hare and can provide data about the location and population of these hares in West Virginia. Welcome to Thursday, racers. Today we're talking about the challenges around current subprime lending, Toyota's big sales bump, and a giant commuter drone that is one step away from reality. Show Notes with links:According to Experian, Dealerships are finding it harder to secure subprime auto loans due to a decline in subprime customers obtaining auto loans and leases as factors like inflation, rising gas prices, and ending stimulus funds have affected consumers' creditworthiness and increased debt-to-income ratios, with many turning to credit cards for financial support. The proportion of subprime used-vehicle loans has reached near-record lows, with such borrowers only involved in 14% of loans and leases on new and used vehicles in Q1 2023.The increase in late auto loan payments among subprime borrowers is higher than during the late 2000s recession, according to an S&P Global Mobility analysis of TransUnion data."What we're seeing now is some of the lowest FICO scores ... we've seen in years. Consumers who might have qualified for loans in the past are "not even close," said Michael Opdahl, COO for Automotive Credit CorpToyota's global sales saw a significant increase in May as both parts and supply shortages seem to be letting up. The company reported a 10% global sales increase in May 2023, selling a total of 838,478 vehicles attributing the increase to an improved supply of chips and other partsIn Japan, sales surged by 35.1% to 116,954 units.Global sales of hybrid cars grew by 25.8% year-on-year, reaching 261,147 units, almost one third of total vehicles sold last month. The company sold 9,923 battery electric vehicles worldwide in May, making the five-month total in 2023 reach 35,980 units.California based, Joby Aviation has received approval from the FAA to begin flight testing its electric air taxi prototype, moving closer to commercial operations, targeted for 2025. The company's business model is akin to a rideshare app. It's set to compete in a growing market of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturers.Tetsuo Ogawa, the CEO of Toyota North America, will join Joby Aviation's board. Toyota is the company's largest external shareholder, with an investment of around $400 millionThe company is set to begin passenger operations in 2025As part of a $131 million contract with the U.S. Air Force, Joby will deliver its first two electric aircraft in March 2024 after initial testing at Edwards Air Force BaseShares jumped 26% on the newsGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Toyota North America Leader Jack Hollis
June 9, 2023 ~ Jeff Makarewicz, Group Vice-President Technical Resources at Toyota North America, Research and Development tells Paul the automaker is investing nearly $50 million to construct a new battery laboratory at its North American research and development headquarters outside of Ann Arbor.
With the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata, driving is the thing. And as we roadtested the Miata this week, it struck us that all the fun to be had from driving a Miata might be lost in the inexorable shift from gasoline-fueled cars to EVs. The whole prospect made us sad because the current Miata is such a hoot to drive. With its 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine and the six-speed manual transmission, the little sports car is just about the perfect way to have fun behind the wheel. No, we admit it isn't especially practical. And no, it isn't even all the fuel-efficient. But isn't the joy it provides worth it? At some point, we wonder, what in the world are we doing to ourselves? Battery electrics can be interesting to drive, but the fun they provide is nothing like the exhilaration a pre-dawn blast in a Miata provides. We know that firsthand. And we'll tell you more in this episode. This week, our other road test is of a vehicle filled with pleasant practicality — the 2023 Toyota Sienna minivan. Now all-hybrid all the time, the Sienna has vaulted toward the top of the minivan charts with its appealing combination of fuel economy, interior space, versatile seating, and big cargo space. For a long family vaca, it is hard to find a better choice, as co-host Chris Teague discovered. Our guest for you this week has a lot to say about the current and future state of the Toyota lineup. Michael Tripp is Vice President of Vehicle Marketing & Communications at Toyota North America. Host Jack Nerad sat down with him at a recent driving event in Southern California to talk about two brand new Toyota vehicles and where Toyota is going in this ever-complicated global market. He had some very interesting things to say that aren't the typical auto industry line regarding the future of transport. In the news, Stellantis, the parent company of Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and several other brands has offered buyouts to more than 33,000 workers in the United States. That's never a good sign. In the we-didn't-see-this-coming department, something common to virtually all new cars turns out to be something that might kill you. We'll have the potentially life-saving details on that coming up. And the U.S. Postal Service is having trouble getting a big delivery -- the delivery of its all-new mail truck. Or should we say 50,000 all-new mail trucks? We'll tell all about that snafu in this episode. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark.
In this episode we are in Carlsbad, California with Michael Tripp, Vice President Vehicle Marketing & Communications at Toyota North America, to learn how the Toyota Prius, the original hybrid car, finally became sexy on it´s 5th generation.

Toyota is taking sustainability to the next level with its commitment to water - a precious manufacturing resource, that many manufacturers don't take seriously enough. Focusing in on the company's Baja California Mexico plant, one that the company says is one of the most "water-stressed plants in the world", Toyota sought to first understand its relationship to the local and regional watershed. Toyota is now sharing what its learned about water with other manufacturers.
Host Tom Appel and co-hosts Jill Ciminillo and Damon Bell start the show by discussing the results of the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for 2022 . Kevin Butt, Senior Director for Environmental Sustainability for Toyota North America, joins us to talk about Toyota's various environmental and conservation initiatives both inside and outside the company. Tom has a "Volvo V90 Cross Country vs Annie Lennox" quiz for Damon and Jill, and Damon runs down the latest articles on the Consumer Guide Daily Drive blog, including a test-drive review of the 2022 BMW M440i Gran Coupe.
In this episode we talk to Michael Tripp, Vice President of Vehicle Marketing & Communications at Toyota North America, about the first-ever 2023 Toyota GR Corolla, which was developed by the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team, with 300 hp, 273 lb.-ft. of torque from a 1.6L, 3-cylinder direct/port injected turbo engine and a manual transmission only!
It has been 16 years since Toyota introduced an all-new Tundra full-size pickup truck. But now the company has pulled the wraps off the completely revamped 2022 Toyota Tundra, and we have the inside story. This week our special guest is Kenneth Munkelt, Senior Product Education Planner at Toyota North America. Host Jack Nerad recently had a chance to sit down with him at the truck's introductory drive event outside San Antonio, and the chat was revealing. Toyota has changed the powertrain, the frame, the suspension, and the infotainment system for 2022, so this is about as complete a makeover as you can imagine. In this week's road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague will be giving of his thoughts on the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer crossover SUV. He was driving the off-road-oriented Activ version of the truck, and he'll tell us how it stacks up against others in the burgeoning segment. Also in the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad had the opportunity to drive one of the hottest vehicles you can get for under $30,000 – the 2022 Honda Civic Si. It's one of the contenders for North American Car of the Year, and he'll tell how it compares to others like it. And he predicts its chances of winning the coveted North American Car of the Year honor. There's also some startling news on the telematics front this week. It has been widely under-reported, but the coming demise of a telecom technology could mean the connected-car services in your vehicle will suddenly stop working. We'll give you the surprising details and let you know what some automakers plan to do about it. That news is surprising, too. In another hot news item, the smart money is now betting we will see self-driving trucks long before we see autonomous cars. And we'll have more on that in this episode of America on the Road.
In this week's episode of Beyond the Wrench, we are joined by Brian Hebert, Technical Service and Training Manager, Toyota North America. Timeless ‘60s styling, movie star status, $1 million price tag, and a backstory for the ages – what doesn't the 2000GT have? Though only a few hundred were ever manufactured, this iconic speedster stands as one of Toyota's, and the world's, most memorable vehicles. Why? For starters, Japan's first supercar blew the doors off of what the world thought of the then-humble Toyota name, giving the upstart brand invaluable credence and credibility in the American marketplace. Often referred to as a halo car, the 2000GT deeply influenced Toyota's place in the automotive industry and earned a permanent place in performance vehicle history. The perfect model or toy car, the 2000GT sports one of the most attractive shapes and styling packages ever put on the road; but movie buffs will remember it most fondly from its co-starring role in a certain 1967 action film, the fifth installment of a franchise that recently released its twenty-sixth feature, currently showing in theatres around the world. The world's most famous big screen superspy still rules the box office today – just as the 2000GT remains one of his most revered rides, even if he never actually drove it (more on that in the episode). We're joined by Ross Scharphorn, professional stunt driver and car chase historian; Derrick Heydari, Product Development Engineer, Toyota North America; and Drew Eleazar, Senior Development Engineer, Toyota North America, for a fun roundtable conversation that zigs and zags from the 2000GT's inspiration and launch, to its specs, tech, and place in movie history. Shake a martini and fire up your backseat vision phone – we've chopped the top and set our sights on Tokyo, Japan, 1967. Welcome to The Cyber Ranch Podcast, recorded under the big blue skies of Texas, where one CISO explores the cybersecurity landscape with the help of friends and experts! Today, host and CISO Allan Alford interviews Gabe Lawerence, General Manager of Cyber Security Protection at Toyota Motor North America. Gabe has seen the good and bad of purple teaming, and we're here today to discuss what a mature purple teaming organization looks like. To start the conversation, Allan asks Gabe to share a little about himself, his background in information security and what he does at his day job. His path to security hasn't been linear - he has been a developer, an entrepreneur and a startup owner, slowly making his way to different levels of management in the security space. Gabe runs Enterprise Security at Toyota North America and is responsible for the technical side of the business and manufacturing environment. When discussing what successful purple teaming looks like, Gabe points to the heightened alert of fidelity being among its greatest benefits. Rather than a red versus blue mindset, purple teaming encourages community and collaboration. Then, Allan asks Gabe to share a specific time he found unexpected success in purple teaming. Gabe gives an example reiterating the advantage of having a red and blue team working collaboratively. In managing an enterprise, Gabe says there is always something changing. Validating your controls, alerts and responses are just a few of many tasks best tackled in smaller chunks. Embedding the automation from purple teaming as the ongoing environment keeps things in a high functioning state and serves as a persistent health check. Gabe explains how a buffer overflow isn't exactly instantaneous and combatting lingering attacks. Though purple teaming has many great benefits, it requires a bit of maturity. Having different teams interact together as they mature ensures they understand each other's roles and can effectively work together. Gabe urges people in the industry to think of themselves not only as part of a specific team, but as a part of a broader collective. In the hiring process, he describes seeking candidates with experience in software development and scripting. Additionally, it's crucial to be willing and excited to learn and have keen problem solving abilities. In closing, Gabe looks forward to working in server-less spaces like the Cloud in the future and says his favorite thing about his career field is that it never fails to offer something new. Key Takeaways 0:21 - Host Allan Alford welcomes listeners to the show and introduces Gabe Lawerence. 1:12 - Allan asks Gabe to share about his background and day job. 2:40 - What is successful purple teaming? 4:30 - Gabe shares both positive and negative personal experiences in purple teaming. 9:42 - How do you automate purple teaming? 14:11 - Fine tuning the deployment of the controls. 19:20 - How Gabe designs and hires for his team. 26:20 - What keeps Gabe in Information Security? And while we can’t necessarily say we’re going to solve every one, we can sure start — we can sure be at the start of that.” Hollis goes on to add, “We want that relationship with individuals to tell us what is it that they could use, what is it they need, and help us challenge our team to solve problems.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Hollis spent time playing minor league baseball before finding a different career path. (1:41) Hollis discusses his 26-year career arc at Toyota and how its DNA and people are a “core match” for him. (3:13) Hollis talks about three important mentors in his career.
