Lots of tangents and a new KAL/CAL inspired by some new patterns for your hands and feet generously donated by the designers as prizes. Full show notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Subscribe on Android or Subscribe on Google Podcasts Marsha’s Projects I’m still working on the pair of socks for myself using Drops Fabel Print that I bought in San Luis Obispo. I’m back to working on the Walk Along by AnkeStrick and I’m using Little Fish Stitches fingering. I was having problems where I was alternating skeins at the beginning of row which was at the back of the sweater. A huge thank you to MyBlueGirl and Sarahjhill for suggesting Helical knitting. This solves the problem of the messy looking change. I started a spinning project with olive green merino roving I bought at the Whidbey Island Weavers meet up in April 2019. Combining it with another merino I ordered from Paradise Fibers in Spokane, Washington in a dark brown called Bitter Chocolate. Making a 3 ply with two green and one brown single. Kelly’s Projects  Finished!  I hemmed the Christmas Candy dishtowels and put them away!  I also finished With Friends Pullover using the pattern Rachel by Josée Paquin.  It still needs ends woven in and blocking. I’m really happy with how it turned out and I’m looking forward to wearing it.  The Persian Tile Blanket is coming along, but I didn’t work on it as much in the last two weeks. Instead I started a pair of socks for Robert. I’m using leftovers of Leading Men Fiber Arts Show Stopper, Independent Will colorway. I had 90 grams left after using it for argyle socks for my brother-in-law. Not sure I’ll have enough but I’m planning to use toes and heels of a different yarn. Extremities Knit/Crochet Along This KAL/CAL was inspired by the generous donation of these patterns: Abington Mitts, Jennifer Lassonde, Down Cellar Studio Coffee Socks Collection, Dotsdabbles Designs, Deborah   It starts now (February 2021) and will end on April 25, 2021. Knit anything for your extremities (hands, arms, legs, feet). Some examples include socks, leg warmers, mitts,  mittens, gloves, and wristlets. There will be a giveaway thread in the Ravelry Group for you to post your FOs.  Winter Weave Along You can join in with your weaving projects anytime until March 31. We will have prizes, including a class generously donated by Erica at Weavolution. Check out this great website for weavers with projects, discussion, classes, and lots of resources. The website has a handy Weaving Calculator that you can use for project planning.

I Thought I Knew How: A Podcast about Knitting and Life

008: Seed Stitch Success Released May 21, 2019 In this episode, Anne shares her experience signing up for Shetland Wool Week 2019, how she finally nailed her seed stitch, the winner of the episode 7 giveaway and more! Winner-winner! Congratulations to KnittyMoomin from Instagram for winning the Episode 7 giveaway. Please check your Instagram messages! Shetland Wool Week Sign-ups! Anne was up at 4:30 am on May 18th, and was able to get a class in every time slot she was hoping for when the Shetland Wool Week class registration went live at 5 am. Most of her classes relate to Fair Isle techniques, but she will also be taking classes in lace and Bohus knitting, as well as whittling her own shawl pin. She will be reporting back on her experiences there, so stay tuned for the episodes coming in October! Because it's the 10th anniversary of Shetland Wool Week, there are many, many programs going on. Plus, often times, people overbook themselves for classes and sell their tickets on. So, if you're on the fence about going this year, there will still be plenty to do and see and a good chance that you'll be able to get in to a class. If you will be attending this year, reach out to Anne and say hi! Progress on the Master Hand Knitter Program Anne continued to work on her seed stitch practice scarf over the last few weeks and finally had a breakthrough thanks to a video by Arenda Holladay. It wasn't Holladay's method so much as what she said. Watch the video below to see Holladay's fix and listen to the podcast episode to hear what worked for Anne. (Ok, ok... She found that tugging the yarn after working the purl stitch is what did the trick for her!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15ORNUlhgTM While this isn't the method that eventually worked for Anne, it's what sparked the answer for her! Anne will be knitting up her official seed stitch swatch and moving along in the program! Stay tuned for further progress and tips! Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL and CAL for Warm Up America! What started as a baby blanket failed due to insufficient amounts of yarn. But no worries, Anne used the yarn for that failed project, along with all the remaining acrylic in her stash, to crochet 28 blocks for the Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL/CAL. Follow that link to get all the details on this project to support Warm Up America! The KAL/CAL launched on May 1 and runs until May 31! There's a chance to win a set of needles or hooks from Knitter's Pride, so get crackin'! Anne had planned to send a few blocks, but when a baby blanket project failed because she didn't have enough yarn to finish it, she used the yarn to make some blocks to send to Warm Up America. Then she cleaned out the rest of her acrylic scrap yarn and ended up crocheting thirty blocks in all! Upcoming Events -- Be Sure to Say Hi! Anne will be heading to the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft event on May 25. At noon, she will be at the sheep event area in case anyone wants to come by and say hi. Or just look for her in the crowd and say hello! The I-91 Yarn Shop Hop is scheduled for June 27-30th. Anne will be hitting the yarn stores in the New Haven area on the 28th and in Massachusetts and Vermont on the 29th. If you see her, say hi! Or get in touch to coordinate a time to meet at one of the shops in those areas! The next place Anne will be popping up is in NYC for 11 weekdays between July 9-25. Anne will be yarn crawling her way around Manhattan on many of those days. What's your favorite NYC yarn shop that she shouldn't miss? Drop her a line in the comments and let her know! knitCompanion Review Sally Holt, the genius behind the knitCompanion app, should be up for the Knitting Nobel Prize. That's a thing, right? knitCompanion works on iOS and Android devices and exists to make your knitting life so much easier. The free version of the app helps you organize your patterns and track where you are in your charts or written instructions. Affordable subscriptions increase the usefulness of the app dramatically, though, adding the ability to create shortcuts and add information to patterns. You can also manipulate the keys and charts within the patterns. Five minutes of prep in knitCompanion can save you hours of frustrations in some of your more complicated projects. It didn't take long for Anne to fall in love with the program. She uses it all the time. Listen to the episode below for an in-depth review of the features or subscribe through the podcast app of your choice. Giveaway The giveaway for episode 8 has a summery theme as we head into the end of May. One lucky listener will win a hank of Dragonfly Fibers Dance Rustic Silk in the Dragonberry colorway, a new copy of the Spring/Summer 2018 edition of Knitwear Magazine, a device stand from knitCompanion, and a set of stitch markers. Here's some more details: Cast on date is Thursday, January 19th Any design or pattern you want (some great freebies on the Blacker Yarns website) Must be knit with Blacker Yarns to be eligible for prizes and discounts at EYF Can be used in combination with other yarns too Chat thread in Blacker Yarns ravelry group Tags with#BlackerPodKAL on social media & Ravelry Cast off date is 4th March (just in time for EYF!) If you wear your FO at EYF you can get a discount on more Blacker Yarns! In addition to being eligible for #BlackerPodKAL prizes we're also going to come up with some exclusive to Team YITC members too. Watch this space! What we've been working on Rachel clearly had delusions of grandeur with her Christmas knitting plans so she's still working through those and gives us and update. It sounds like the beginning of 2017 is also already chock-a-block full of knitting deadlines too! Allison is happy to be finished the Hogwarts scarf and still working away on her toe-up socks, as well as a few other things. #spinningsundays What we've also been working on is getting back to our spinning. We made a pact on New Year's Eve that we were going to try and do some spinning every Sunday this year in the hopes that we'll accomplish a lot more. Care to join us? Tag photos of your spinning on Instagram with #spinningsundays and #YITCspinningsundays so that we can find you! Make Happy After the bonkers year that was 2016 we really want 2017 to focus on the positive so we've come up with a simple theme for this year: Make Happy. We'll be threading this theme through all of our interviews and podcast chatter this year and hope you'll let us know how you find the conversations, as well as join in with your own thoughts, stories and images. Please tag us on social media using #YITCmakehappy. Wrap up You can find the podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio and us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, in our Yarn in the City group on Ravelry, or in person on Wednesday nights at our knit night at The Goat on the Rise between 7 and 10pm. Everyone’s really friendly and we hope to see you there! Music credits (all available on NoiseTrade) Ridiculously Happy (feat. Twilight Meadow) - Owl City

BOOK REVIEW:Double or Nothing: Reversible Knitting for the Adventurous by Alisdair Post-Quinn.  You can purchase a copy HERE on the Fallingblox Designs webpage. This book is definitely not for a new knitter unless you are extremely adventurous and willing to take on a challenge!  It is more suited to an experienced knitter or an adventurous intermediate knitter. We really liked a lot of features in this book.  First, it takes you through a series of double knitting projects where you can learn how to take double knitting to another level - double knitted lace, double knitted cables, double knitted colorwork and intarsia, etc.  Often there is a small sample project you can make to try out the new technique so you don't have to commit to a huge project.  That means you could learn the basics of the techniques in this book simply by making the swatch samples.  If you find you enjoy double knitting techniques, you can then move forward to one of the projects,  We also liked the detailed and nicely photographed tutorial pictures.  These are key any time you are learning a new technique and this book really does them well.  Likewise, all of the patterns were nicely photographed so you could really see the double knitting and how it differed on either side.  Finally, we liked that the author wove his own story about his knitting throughout the book.  Although the tone occasionally tended toward the bombastic in the author's story sections, they do connect the book with a personal narrative that makes for an enjoyable read.  All in all, this looks like an interesting challenge for people who want to do more with the double knitting technique and we would recommend it for those knitters. If you would like to win a copy of this book, enter the contest on our Ravelry page and tell us which pattern piques your interest!ALSO:We are still drawing prizes for random people on our Ravelry group membership list as we begin to wind down the podcast.  We will draw another batch of prizes in the next episode so stay tuned.Fiber EventsNone until 2017

Time to own up to my knitting goals for 2016 after the chat last week about goal setting. I'm planning to knit 4 garments - Owligan by Kate Daves, Mallorn by Ann Kingstone, Lush by Tin Can Knits (again! x 2 perhaps!) and Raindrops, also by Tin Can Knits. If you're fretting about stash or just have ambitions of making it feel under control, or indeed you just want to start the year off by loving what you have, check out Curious Handmade's Stash Appreciation Month.  Join our virtual knit night by becoming a patron of the podcast at www.patreon.com/shinybees In Enabler's Corner, I direct you to listen to episode 34 of this podcast with Kate Davies. Kate Davies Designs has just been announced as a finalist in the UK Microbusiness of the Year Awards. Amazing stuff. Being a knitting business does not mean it isn't a 'proper' business and Kate has some great words of advice for those looking to start out in the industry, as well as some stellar banter about rhino bums. The Beadalong has come to a close and I draw your attention to some wonderful projects that have come out of the KAL/CAL. Stay tuned for the next group fun. Finally I introduce to you the dyers for the Winter quarter of The Golden Skein's Power of 3 yarn club. Go and check out Samantha of Scrumptious Purl in Canada, Helen of Ripplescrafts in the Scottish Highlands and Ana of Toil & Trouble in Salem, Mass. There are no spares available but you can find out more and join the club at www.thegoldenskein.com/clubs. Signups close 26th January. Show notes are at www.shinybees.com Music for this episode is Adam and the Walter Boys with 'I Need a Drink'.

In which Rachel gets perhaps a bit overexcited about sock math, and we pat ourselves on the backs for Spinzilla. News and Events: 18th October - What Knitting Does to Your Brain with Heather Ordover, and The Whirled Cinema in Brixton. Tickets are still available. 23-25th October: Gwlana retreat in West Wales. 29th October - 1st November: Geeky Puffin Knit Palooza, in Edinburgh. 10th/17th November - Anna Maltz, aka Sweaterspotter, is teaching a lace and colourwork class for her popular Solja sweater at Wild & Woolly. 15th November - Clare Devine, of Yarn and Pointy Sticks, is teaching "2 at a time anything" at Knit with Attitude. 15th/22nd November - Brioche Stitch Basics with Renée Callahan at Loop. 28th November - the Bath Christmas Craft Crawl! What we're working on: Rachel weaves in the ends on her Aranami Shawl as we record, and admits that she has picked up a year-old UFO. She also has been trying to quickly finish a baby Lush by Tin Can Knits for her brand spanking new baby niece, who arrived on 8th October. Allison is working on the Modish Cowl by Stephen West, and has finished a Marian Cowl by Jane Richmond in some glorious Malabrigo Rasta. Sadly, the Quaking Aspen shawl is currently in a corner contemplating it's sins while it waits in Time Out. We are both feeling flush with our first ever Spinzilla now behind us - go Team SweetGeorgia! Feeling Bookish: We review two books - first up is the Drift Collection, curated by Eden Cottage Yarns, and featuring their Whitefell DK 100% alpaca yarn. Swoon. Full of cozy accessories and gorgeous, wearable sweaters, this collection is a keeper. Head over to the Eden Cottage Yarns Ravelry group to join the KAL/CAL that starts on the 20th of October. We also review Kate Atherley's new book from Interweave, "Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet", and Rachel reveals perhaps a bit too much of her geeky, spreadsheet-obsessed side. Chock full of incredibly helpful tips for getting your socks to fit perfectly, we like this one so much that we are going to share the love with you: leave a comment on this post about either your worst sock fitting disaster, or which pattern you'd like to knit from the 14 included in the book, and we will send you your very own copy! Entries close at 11:59 pm on Friday, 30th October, and please be sure you leave contact info so we can get your book to you! And many thanks to Interweave/F+W Communications for providing us with a copy of the book to review and giveaway. Off the air, you can find us on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. Please leave a review for us on iTunes or listen to us on Stitcher Radio, and don't hesitate to share your thoughts and feedback with us. We are always out and about, so come say hi at any of the events we're attending if you get a chance! Hello from a blooming Cheshire Plain! This episode I share a little industrial heritage, show my maths geek credentials and ponder travel plans. Review: Patricia Ackroyd's talk at the Cheshire WSD Guild meeting last week and the Heike Gittins workshop at Fibre and Clay. Heike Some of the other course delegates     What's on my wheel and needles: The Picperfec fibre continues apace, I think it's time to "swatch ply" to see how thick the finished yarn will be. The sock yarn blanket is also growing nicely and this weekend I've completed a Moebius (Möbius?) cowl in Rowan Felted Tweed and Rowan Kidsilk Haze at the worshop. Something I really like: Making travel plans! Any suggestions for the South Western states of the USA?     Upcoming Events: Wonderwool Wales at Builth Wells, Powys, 9th and 10th April; Woolfest in Cockermouth, Cumbria, 24th and 25th June; Knit Nation in London, 15th-17th July; a range of workshops at Fibre and Clay, including another Moebius Knitting workshop on 17th September and Tunisian Crochet on 10th September and 15th October. I haven't as yet started one, but if you're interested in knitting or crocheting a bear for the Mother Bear Project, details can be found here. Sorry I was too late for your KAL/CAL, Dr Gemma! Links: Ackroyd and Dawson; Heike Gittins' blog and the Knitsisters website; Picperfec's Etsy shop, Fluff and Stuff; Carol Feller;CogKNITive Podcast. Music: Rondopolska by Barry Philips, from the album Tråd, available from Magnatune.
