CEO of Dropps was also CEO of Method during its early rise and looks to repeat success in green household products as the brand moves into retail stores.
Cleaning company Dropps hit shelves in Target this week, hoping to capture market share in the competitive category by offering a "greener" alternative. And one of the first ways it's hoping to catch shoppers' eyes is with its paperboard, trapezoid-shaped container next to the plastic tubs of laundry and dish pods. "It is paperboard within a sea of plastic," said CEO Alastair Dorward, "and the unique form and the shape really presents an excellent billboard on shelf." Dorward joined the Modern Retail Podcast to talk about the company's expansion plans as Dropps made its Target debut online and in stores. The over-30-year-old company makes pods for dish and laundry that are USDA-Certified Biobased, Leaping Bunny Certified and wrapped in a biodegradable film. The launch also includes a new 4-in-1 Plus Oxi Biobased Power Laundry Detergent Pod that's exclusive to Target and Dropps.com, as the company looks to compete with legacy brands that offer "tiered" pods for different uses. Dorward said Dropps is looking to find a mass audience after nearly two decades of direct-to-consumer operations. The former CEO of Method, Dorward took the helm at Dropps about two years ago and worked to take the product from its DTC origins to mass retail. The so-called "green cleaning" category is expected to grow as customers look for more non-toxic ingredients in product purchases. Nielsen IQ found that 45% of consumers want to buy products that have antibacterial properties, non-toxic ingredients and disinfectant abilities, for example.

Get ready for a hot take episode! Today we're diving into ethoxylated ingredients. A lot of ethoxylated ingredients are really hard to spot on labels. Unfortunately, they're not always gonna say "ethoxylated ingredient," so it's important that we know what to look for. This episode is actually going to give you a really good idea of what I teach in my Toxin Free in 3 course. There is an entire module that teaches about ingredients and ingredient safety. We don't stop at why you should avoid certain ingredients and the science behind it. Everyone in my Toxin Free in 3 course walks away with an understanding of how to read labels quickly.Ethoxylation is a process involving ethylene oxide, a carcinogen, reacted with other ingredients to make them milder. However, this process leaves behind contaminants like 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen and skin penetrator. The problem lies not just in the primary ingredient but also in the contaminants. 1,4-dioxane exposure can cause various health issues, from skin problems to liver and kidney damage. In this episode, I discuss: Does vacuum stripping actually make a product more clean? In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I share seven product swaps I made to live a more sustainable lifestyle. I believe that spirituality is having a deep, deep connection to yourself and the world around you. You can't separate the two: Your relationship with your own being is directly tied with your relationship with your environment. Sustainability is a huge part of my life. I've realized that, as I've come to know myself better, I have a huge responsibility to have as little an impact on Mother Earth as possible in terms of waste. I'm sure you feel the same, but it can be so overwhelming at times to make these choices. Why We Feel Powerless to Make (and Keep Making) Sustainable Choices We feel powerless for two reasons: Either we feel that our actions are “too small” to have any real impact on the world; or, we don't take action at all, feeling too unworthy to take even the tiniest step toward potentially making a change—compounding that feeling of powerlessness. Remember, a lot of tiny shifts, over time, will build momentum. Your actions will have a tangible impact on the world. Swap #1: Razors It seems so random and insignificant—but that's exactly the problem. If you actually think about it, how many razors do you go through in a lifetime? Billions of razors end up in landfills in the U.S. alone. And with plastic waste in most of these products, the sad (and horrifying) reality is that they will never biodegrade. So, I've recently made the shift to a company called EcoRoots that sells exclusively zero-waste products—and that includes the packaging. I ordered a beautiful rose gold, old-school razor that I absolutely love using, knowing that I'd taken the tiniest of steps toward reducing waste on this planet. Swap #2: Toothpaste Just as disposable razors contain plastic that contributes to rising landfills around the world, the toothpaste most people use come in plastic tubes. I now subscribe to the company Bite, which offers toothpaste in tablet form. Swap #3: Dishwasher Solution Again, the issue with dishwashing solutions of any kind is that they come in plastic packaging. I found a company called Dropps that offers dishwasher tablets in a brown box with no plastic at all. Swap #4: Single-use bags Here's another one we don't often think too much about. It's convenient to reach over and grab those single-use produce bags at the grocery store when we're buying our fruits and veggies. And then we get home, wash the products, and throw away the bag. It's so easy to overlook just how much we waste on a daily basis—and it adds up fast! Swap #5: Laundry detergent Just like our dishwashing solution, we throw away tons of plastic every year from using mass-produced laundry detergent. Now, this is a swap that I've not yet made, because I'm still going through the stash of laundry detergent that I already have. But once I'm ready to buy more, I plan on purchasing from a company called Tru Earth, which sells laundry strips in a box that you simply place on top of your laundry—one per load—and there's nothing to throw away afterwards. Swap #6: Body soap This one should be an easy swap for everybody. Instead of using liquid soap, which typically comes in plastic containers that we throw away once empty, why not switch to bar soap wrapped in paper packaging? Swap #7: Period products From tampons to sanitary pads, women go through scores of plastic products and packaging every single month. Lo and behold, I eventually found Thinx. Today we’re discussing climate change and the Texas power grid. Our guest is a member of the Sunrise Movement Texas, Janneke Parrish, who is knowledgeable about the political issues surrounding these topics. Texas recently experienced a catastrophic snowstorm leaving millions without power and water in freezing temperatures. The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, was quick to blame renewable energy and the green new deal. Texas has its own grid, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and in our opinion makes it obvious that a for profit energy system is bound to fail. It’s all about maximizing profits. Updating and weatherizing infrastructure has never been a priority. Lack of regulations and oversight means there’s no requirement for these electric companies who are in competition to make investments into the health and safety of the grid. Furthermore, it’s the fossil fuels themselves that are to blame for climate change. Basically as the planet warms the jet stream that typically keeps bitter cold temperatures north breaks down, moving colder weather south. We can expect more events like this in the future making weatherization and preparation in southern states more important than ever. We talk to the CEO of Dropps, Jonathan Propper, who reinvented the way consumers do laundry with the invention of the liquid laundry detergent pod. In 2017, Dropps became exclusively direct-to-consumer by offering cost-saving subscription plans shipped via sustainable packaging; eliminating third-party retailers from its distribution chain. This autonomy has allowed the brand to thrive in providing eco-responsible cleaning products with reduced environmental impact, which saves money, time, water and plastic.@Dropps

NSFW: This one might just be too hot y’all. We’re here to talk l-a-u-n-d-r-y friends. You might not be ready for this one, but you’re about to hear some passion. The crew is ready to talk about the honest to goodness truth of what most float centers REALLY do - laundry. Considering using a laundry service? Get ready to reconsider, unless you want arms of steel or you have a bank account that’s made of steel. It’s time for the battle of onsite laundry versus noise leaks, actual leaks, and the proper way to fold/roll your towels. We’ll dive into some conspiracy theories about why so many people use robes, and how to prevent that, as well as what products/tools to use… or not. We told you it’s going to be hot. “Marketers today have to be data junkies.” Kristin Luck would know. She’s founded two marketing analytics companies that were so successful both ended up being acquired. Today she helps founders and executive teams scale and monetize their businesses. What role does branding play in all of this? We discussed that very topic and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Kristin Luck Kristin Luck serves as an advisor and growth strategist to a number of cutting-edge marketing and analytics technology and services firms through her consultancy, ScaleHouse. She is the founder of two marketing analytics companies that she led to successful exits. Kristin co-founded OTX, an online research business that was named the fastest-growing research firm in the world in 2002 and 2003 and was subsequently acquired by Zelnick Media & Pilot Group and again by Ipsos in 2007. She then founded Forefront Consulting Group, a research technology firm that was acquired by Decipher. Decipher was acquired by FocusVision in 2014 after seven consecutive years of double and triple-digit growth. Kristin is a licensed investment banker with Oberon Securities and a founder focused on helping fellow founders and executive teams scale and monetize their businesses. Her deal expertise on both sides of transactions comes from participating in both acquisitions and exits from $30 million to $175 million. She is also passionate about supporting founders in international markets execute their entry into the U.S. Episode Highlights What does branding have to do with mergers and acquisitions? “Brand is huge in terms of attracting buyers. You have to have brand equity.” We also discussed that brand is hard to quantify yet companies lacking brand equity are usually lacking other performance metrics like annual recurring revenue—and vice versa. Analytics is everything. “Marketers today have to be data junkies.” However, you have to avoid the “phenomenon on analysis paralysis.” Kristin went on to cite a new report from Gartner noting that CMOs will spend more than CIOs for the first time ever. Speaking of the C suite … “It all comes down to the CEO.” We discussed how “investing in brand” can sound like a dubious proposition, especially as execs typically don’t like investing in marketing much less something “squishy” things like branding. Kristin says the CEO sets the tone. “They can be your biggest asset and advocate. Look at the T-Mobile CEO.” What brand has made Kristin smile recently? Want a smile? How about checking out “The Naked Truth About Laundry” from the CEO of Dropps, a sustainable laundry company that got Kristin’s attention and mine and made us both smile. Check it out! 009: Catching Up and Keeping Up Released June 4, 2019 In this episode, Anne needs to catch up on her Master Hand Knitting work and uses podcasts to help her catch up with the online knitting community. Winner-winner! Congratulations to Sparky136 from Ravelry for winning the Episode 8 giveaway! She won by sharing some advice for new knitters. A Good Project to Test the MHK Waters Alex's Blanket is a simple baby blanket pattern that incorporates several of the stitch patterns and skills you need to demonstrate mastery of for the Master Hand Knitter Program. If you have been thinking about going through the program yourself, cast on for this project and give it your all! Pay close attention to your tension, research ways to improve, and get a sense for whether you'd enjoy the program. If being hyper-aware of your knitting makes you feel anxious, maybe it's not the time. But if you enjoy the challenge and insight that comes from this "test," you should think about joining up! Progress on the Master Hand Knitter Program Anne doesn't want to talk about it. She does on the program, though. But, let's leave it lie for now. Oldies but Goodies While at the last few fiber festivals, Anne realized just how out of touch she got with the knitting community while she lived overseas. So, she's turned to podcasts--old podcasts--to get herself caught up. Some of them don't hold up, or have disappeared, but others are still well worth a listen. If you haven't already, check out KnitCast, Cast On, or Knit Obsession with zKnits. How often do you record your own thoughts and experiences? Don't let them disappear like so many of the knitting podcasts of the last 15 years. Little daily moments from everyday life is what historians and family come to treasure the most. Is it time for you to pick up a journal habit? Harriet's Hat Knit-along You've heard Anne talk about the Shetland MRI Scanner Appeal in previous episodes. Lately, Harriet Middleton has designed a hat to help raise funds for the appeal. The pattern has gone viral, and the Minnesota Knitter's Guild will be hosting a knit-along on their Ravelry group starting on June 8, 2019. The guild is offering a cast-on prize and a completion prize. Visit the group for details. You'll need to buy the pattern to join in, and if you need yarn, The Woolly Thistle is selling kits at a discount and donating the proceeds to the cause, or you can get a kit from Northfield Yarn. There are more details in the episode and at the Ravelry thread for the KAL. Advice for Beginners One of the ways to enter the giveaway last time was to offer advice for beginner knitters who hoped to improve their skills. Take a look at the Ravelry thread for a lot of great advice! Giveaway The giveaway for episode 9 is full of lovely things from the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Festival. This selection of items from the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Festival will be yours if you win the Episode 9 giveaway! This time, Anne tried to focus on the vendors who only sell at festivals to give you a truly unique offering. It has a set of Anne's handmade stitch markers, an anti-moth sachet, dyed wool fiber, a taster hank of yarn from Tidal Yarns, and felted acorns from Englishman Bay Trading Company. This giveaway is only open to people with a mailing address in the USA. To enter, visit @IThoughtIKnewHow on Instagram and find the post for Episode 9. Follow @IThoughtIKnewHow and like the post. Tag as many people as you'd like in the comments, but only one name per post. Each of those things will get you one entry. To get 5 entries, share the episode post to your grid or stories, and tag @IThoughtIKnewHow. The winner will be chosen with a random number generator on June 14, 2019 and announced in Episode 10 of the podcast on June 18, 2019. Featured Music The first song this week was "Things that I'll Keep" by Doug Hoyer. That was followed by "Waiting On" by I don't know who because the licensing company failed to include the proper attribution, but the lyrics were by Langston Hughes. If you are a musician who would like a song featured on the program, or if you have comments or feedback, please contact the show at anne@familypodcasts.com. Support the Show Order your laundry detergent from Dropps and support the show at no extra cost to you. Dropps is vegan, plastic-free, effective and less expensive than most of the brands in the grocery store, and it arrives at your door on a delivery schedule that works for you.
008: Seed Stitch Success Released May 21, 2019 In this episode, Anne shares her experience signing up for Shetland Wool Week 2019, how she finally nailed her seed stitch, the winner of the episode 7 giveaway and more! Winner-winner! Congratulations to KnittyMoomin from Instagram for winning the Episode 7 giveaway. Please check your Instagram messages! Shetland Wool Week Sign-ups! Anne was up at 4:30 am on May 18th, and was able to get a class in every time slot she was hoping for when the Shetland Wool Week class registration went live at 5 am. Most of her classes relate to Fair Isle techniques, but she will also be taking classes in lace and Bohus knitting, as well as whittling her own shawl pin. She will be reporting back on her experiences there, so stay tuned for the episodes coming in October! Because it's the 10th anniversary of Shetland Wool Week, there are many, many programs going on. Plus, often times, people overbook themselves for classes and sell their tickets on. So, if you're on the fence about going this year, there will still be plenty to do and see and a good chance that you'll be able to get in to a class. If you will be attending this year, reach out to Anne and say hi! Progress on the Master Hand Knitter Program Anne continued to work on her seed stitch practice scarf over the last few weeks and finally had a breakthrough thanks to a video by Arenda Holladay. It wasn't Holladay's method so much as what she said. Watch the video below to see Holladay's fix and listen to the podcast episode to hear what worked for Anne. (Ok, ok... She found that tugging the yarn after working the purl stitch is what did the trick for her!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15ORNUlhgTM While this isn't the method that eventually worked for Anne, it's what sparked the answer for her! Anne will be knitting up her official seed stitch swatch and moving along in the program! Stay tuned for further progress and tips! Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL and CAL for Warm Up America! What started as a baby blanket failed due to insufficient amounts of yarn. But no worries, Anne used the yarn for that failed project, along with all the remaining acrylic in her stash, to crochet 28 blocks for the Knitter's Pride Spring Charity KAL/CAL. Follow that link to get all the details on this project to support Warm Up America! The KAL/CAL launched on May 1 and runs until May 31! There's a chance to win a set of needles or hooks from Knitter's Pride, so get crackin'! Anne had planned to send a few blocks, but when a baby blanket project failed because she didn't have enough yarn to finish it, she used the yarn to make some blocks to send to Warm Up America. Then she cleaned out the rest of her acrylic scrap yarn and ended up crocheting thirty blocks in all! Upcoming Events -- Be Sure to Say Hi! Anne will be heading to the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft event on May 25. At noon, she will be at the sheep event area in case anyone wants to come by and say hi. Or just look for her in the crowd and say hello! The I-91 Yarn Shop Hop is scheduled for June 27-30th. Anne will be hitting the yarn stores in the New Haven area on the 28th and in Massachusetts and Vermont on the 29th. If you see her, say hi! Or get in touch to coordinate a time to meet at one of the shops in those areas! The next place Anne will be popping up is in NYC for 11 weekdays between July 9-25. Anne will be yarn crawling her way around Manhattan on many of those days. What's your favorite NYC yarn shop that she shouldn't miss? Drop her a line in the comments and let her know! knitCompanion Review Sally Holt, the genius behind the knitCompanion app, should be up for the Knitting Nobel Prize. That's a thing, right? knitCompanion works on iOS and Android devices and exists to make your knitting life so much easier. The free version of the app helps you organize your patterns and track where you are in your charts or written instructions. Affordable subscriptions increase the usefulness of the app dramatically, though, adding the ability to create shortcuts and add information to patterns. You can also manipulate the keys and charts within the patterns. Five minutes of prep in knitCompanion can save you hours of frustrations in some of your more complicated projects. It didn't take long for Anne to fall in love with the program. She uses it all the time. Listen to the episode below for an in-depth review of the features or subscribe through the podcast app of your choice. This Earth Day, we’re joined by Jonathan Propper, Founder and CEO of Dropps. He’s the maverick behind the original laundry pod, and has guided Dropps to a number of firsts, including eliminating detergent dyes and adding bittering agents to deter children from eating pods. Behind all that innovation is a desire to create a healthier Earth. Laundry isn’t going away (as much as we wish it would!), and the ways in which we consume products is becoming more critical. As a social enterprise, Dropps has, from day one, focused on making an everyday chore more sustainable—while raising awareness for how our purchasing choices can impact society and the environment. 006: I Went to London and All I Got Was This Yarn Released April 23, 2019 In this episode, Anne announces the winner of the last giveaway, talks about her trip to London, and announces another giveaway! Winner! Congratulations to Euphistic81 on Instagram, who won the giveaway announced in episode 5 from Dragonfly Fibers and Knitter's Pride! London! Anne and her daughter visited two fashion-related sites in London, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Fashion and Textile Museum, as well as the Fashion Museum in Bath. The V&A was hosting special exhibits about Dior and Mary Quant, but also has a permanent exhibit that includes knitwear. The Fashion and Textile Museum rotates it's exhibits frequently. Even if they aren't showing knitwear at the time, this small museum is very informative! The Fashion Museum in Bath walks you through centuries of fashion through 100 representative outfits, as well as hosting an additional exhibit that changes from time to time. The Mary Quant exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum featured a hand-knit dress surrounded by several of the knitting and sewing patterns Quant created so people could make their own versions of her designs. Some of her knitting patterns are available as PDFs from sellers on Etsy. Three Yarn Shops to Visit The Village Haberdashery is located in the West Hampstead area of London, just a short walk from the nearest Underground station. It focuses mainly on yarn and fabric crafts, but is a great little all-around craft store. Liberty London is well known for their Liberty fabrics, but it's also the flagship store for Rowan yarns. For many of us, this is a rare opportunity to take a gander at Rowan's entire line! My sweater's worth of Erila Knight's British Blue 100 from Wool in Bath, UK. Also, the project bag gifted to Anne by Wool's owner, Laura, as a thank you for contributing hats for The Big Knit 2019. Wool is a cozy, welcoming yarn shop just a short walk from the Bath Spa train station in Bath, England. They have an extensive collection of British yarns, a welcoming staff, and a gentle shop dog names Toby. Be sure to stop by on your way to or from the Roman Baths to give Toby a pat and take the time to peruse their extensive pattern offerings! Upcoming Events April 27, 2019 is Local Yarn Store Day. Be sure to check the listings to see if your LYS is participating. Whether they are officially involved of now, consider swinging by to show some support for your local brick-and-mortar stores that day! For those in New England, April 27 is also the day of the Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival. Anne will be there with her family. Will you? Say hi if you see her there! Giveaway Be sure to listen to the episode to learn how to enter our newest episode for a Japanese Knot bag from LittleComfortsAtoZ and a hank of handspun alpaca from Peru. The episode 6 giveaway is a project bag from LittleComfortsAtoZ (Look for her on Etsy), a hank of handspun alpaca yarn, and a set of stitch markers! Featured Music The first song featured was "The Can't Find Kelly" sung by Billy Merson and is available at the Free Music Archive. The second song was "Ca Bages Ca Beans and Car Rots," sung by Florrie Ford, also available from the Free Music Archive. If you are a musician who would like a song featured on the program, or if you have comments or feedback, please contact the show at anne@familypodcasts.com. Support the Show You can help support this show by buying your laundry detergent through Dropps, like I do! It comes to my door every quarter without my having to worry about it. The pods use no plastic--not even in their packaging--and they work. And at half the price I had been paying for pods, the switch was a no-brainer for me. Give them a try and a portion of the price will support the podcast at no additional cost to you! Social Media You can follow Anne on Instagram or Ravelry as @ithoughtiknewhow. The second part of our interview with Nate Dropps
Nate Dropps joins us in the studio to share some of his amazing journey
005: Tension Released March 26, 2019 In this episode, Anne talks about her tension issues with the third swatch of the Master Hand Knitter Program, plus a correction, music to knit by, projects she's been working on, a charity knitting opportunity, and the first giveaway of the podcast! A Correction In the last episode, Anne planned to knit the ribbing for swatch 2 of the Master Hand Knitting Program in smaller needles, but a listener pointed out that the instructions spell out that you should use the same needles. So, thank you to Julie for saving Anne from having to reknit the swatch! Progress on Swatch 3 Swatch three is a seed-stitch swatch, but without proper, consistent tension, gaps appear at the transition from purl to knit. After many attempts resulting in slow improvement, Anne has decided to stop knitting the swatch and, instead, will be knitting a seed stitch scarf, which should give her plenty of practice without ruining the yarn she needs for her MHK swatches! On and Off the Needles Anne has a lot on the needles right now, including her second attempt at Sencilla, by Shireen Nadir; Nejiri, by Yumiko Sakurai; and the Bonte Mitts, by Joyce Riemens. Listen to the episode to hear how they are progressing! The only project Anne finished since the last podcast was a modified version of the Juniper Cowl, available on the Berroco Website. For information on how she altered the pattern from a standard cowl to one that warms her shoulders as well, you'll have to listen to the podcast! The Big Knit UK While there's been little progress on "real" projects, Anne has been busy participating in The Big Knit by knitting 5 mini hats a day from March 15 to April 6. (So far, so good, as of the day this episode launches!) These tiny hats are a great way to turn scrap yarn into funding for Age UK. American knitters: if you would like to contribute to the cause, Anne is leaving April 2, 2019 for the UK and is happy to take your hats along, but you have to act fast to get the hats to herby April 1!! Send her an email at anne @ familypodcasts . com to get the mailing address when you're ready. Any American knitters who mails her 10 hats by April 1 will be thanked with a set of stitchmarkers from the inventory that remains from her former business. (While supplies last.) Knitters in the UK have until July to submit their mini hats through their local Age UK. Additionally, many knitting stores are acting as collection points. Anne will be taking her hats, and any she receives from listeners, to donate at Wool in Bath. Product Review: Ginger DPNs and Crochet Hooks A few days ago, Anne wrote a blog post singing the praises of Knitter's Pride Ginger line of needles and hooks. Check it out. Giveaway!! Our first giveaway is underway! The deadline to enter is April 18, and you must listen to this episode of the podcast to find out how to enter. This hank of Selkie Sport from Dragonfly Fibers and two sets of DPNs from Knitter's Pride could be yours if you win! The giveaway is a hank of Selkie Sport from Dragonfly Fibers and two sets of DPNs from Knitter's Pride. The Selkie Sport is 70% blue faced Leicester wool and 30% silk in the Denali colorway. It's a joy to work with and the range of blues is utterly blissful. This giaveaway is open to anyone who lives anywhere the USPS delivers, including international listeners. If I can get it to you by going to my post office, you can enter to win! The next episode should release on April 23, and I'll pick the winner as I record, so look for episode 6 to hear if you've won! Featured Music The first song featured was "Ma Jeewanaye" by H. R. Jothipala and is available at the Free Music Archive. The second song was West in Africa by a South African man named John Bartmann, also available from the Free Music Archive. If you are a musician who would like a song featured on the program, or if you have comments or feedback, please contact the show at anne@familypodcasts.com. On January 1, she took the plunge and signed up for the Master Hand Knitter Program offered by the Knitting Guild Association. The first song in the show is "Dead From the Beginning, Alive Till the End," by Doctor Turtle and available at the Free Music Archive. After the music break, Anne shares her first memories of yarn shopping with her mother, as well as some thoughts on her current local yarn store, Marji's Yarncrafts in Granby, Connecticut. Marji's is a delightful yarn shop full of the tried and true as well as items to add extra style to your projects, all in a cozy setting that will have you wishing you had the time to sit and knit for a while. The last time Anne was in Marji's, she picked up a Mybaggee mini zippered mesh pouch set that has done a perfect job at keeping her notions contained and orderly. The second song in the show is "MainSquare," by Jahzzar and available at the Free Music Archive. Next, Anne talks about blocking the preliminary swatch for the Master Knitter program. It was a little tricky and required two different blocking methods to get it to lie straight. A traditional wet block stopped the sides from curling in, but the tops required the "mega-steam" method as described by Deborah Newton in her book, Finishing School: A Master Class for Knitters. It's a great way to get stubborn, natural-fiber knitting to lie flat without mashing your stitches. Listen to the episode for details! 034: Campfire Foods Released: May 10, 2018 How can your family navigate the memory-making campfire without turning it into a massive sugar bomb? The LCHF Family taste-tested and tinkered with a meal's worth or recipes and came up with a meal that involves cooking on sticks, big flavor, and--yes--dessert. First, they shared an article from the NYTimes that suggests that a low-carb diet may be more benefitial for Type-1 daibetics than previousy believed. Then, they launched into a series of campfire recipes that are sure to please your whole family, with narry a marshmallow in sight. After a brief love-fest for Dropps, they shared the Best Option for when you're starving and your only options are Burger King or Taco Bell. Recipes Bacon-Wrapped Brussels Sprouts Bacon and brussels sprouts are a family favorite done in the oven, and we were pleasantly surprised to find that they cooked up together beautifully over a campfire. These are a great way to get kids involved with campfire cooking, meeting their essential desire to find out how close they can get their food to the fire before it is covered in flames! Umm... Maybe just keep an eye on the kiddos after all... 1 lb Bacon (no sugars added, approximately 12 total slices) 24 Brussels Sprouts 1. Trim and wash the brussels sprouts. 2. Cut the pound of bacon in half so that you have 24 shorter slices. 3. Wrap the bacon around the brussels sprouts so that both ends of the bacon overlap. Skewer them on a sharpened stick or roasting fork so that the ends of the bacon are secured. 4. Hold the bacon-wrapped brussels sprouts over the flames or coals until the bacon is crispy and appetizing. 5. Eat plain, or with a splash of lemon, sugarless barbecue sauce, or mustard. Campfire Spinach and Artichoke Dip A super-tasty appetizer you can prepare before you leave to camp and throw on the coals as soon as they are ready. 8 ounces sour cream 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 1 cup shredded paremesan cheese, fresh 3/4 cup cooked spinach, chopped 1 cup artichoke hearts, chopped 1/2 tsp garlic powder salt to taste Bacon Chips 1 lb bacon without sugar, more as needed Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl. Salt to taste. Divide the mixture in half. Layer two pieces of heavy-duty aluminum foil on a counter and place half the mixture in the center of the foil. Fold the edges up and over the mixture, folding the edges over each other to create a tight seal with the mixture enclosed within. Repeat the last step with the other half of the mixture so that you have two foil packets of dip. Store in the refrigerator or a cooler for four hours to allow the flavors to mingle. Place the packets near hot coals when they are ready. Cook for 20 minutes. Remove the foil packs and check that the mixture is hot and soft. Enjoy with sliced vegetables or bacon chips. (To make the dip at home, bake the foil packets in your oven at 425F for 20 minutes.) Bacon Chips (optional) Line a sided cookie sheet with parchment paper. Cut bacon strips into 2" long segments. Lay the bacon segments out on the lined cookie sheet so they are close together but do not touch. Put the cookie sheet into a cold oven and turn it on to 400F. Bake for 12 minutes. Remove the pan and flip the bacon pieces. Bake 8-10 minutes more, or until desired crispiness level is achieved. Remove from pan immediately and allow to cool. Store in an airtight container. LCHF Cabbage and Sausage Foil Dinners "Hobo Dinners," "Campfire Dinners," "Foil Dinners." No matter what you called them growing up, they were a staple campfire meal on most campouts. Here's a potato-free version that relies on radishes to maintain the "feel" of this old favorite. Don't worry, though; baking the radishes cuts back on their sharpness to the point that many people can't tell the difference between a baked radish and potato. 1 lb heat and eat sausage such as keilbasa, hot dogs, breakfast links, or precooked Italian sausage, whichever your family prefers, sliced about 1/2 inch thick 1/4 head cabbage, cut into wedges with the outer edge of the widge 1/2 inch wide 20 radishes, washed and trimmed, then quartered 1 onion, sliced 4 Tbsp butter 1 tsp garlic powder bacon fat, olive oil, or melted butter to grease the foil Salt and pepper, to taste Prepare the fire so there is a good bank of coals. Or, preheat a grill to 400F or an oven to 425F. Cut four, 18-inch sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Brush the centers liberally with bacon fat, olive oil, or melted butter. Divide the cabbage between the four pieces of foil, mounding it in the center of the foil. Similarly, divide the radishes, sliced onions, and sausage by piling them atop the four mounds of cabbage. Top each mound with one tablespoon of butter and 1/4 tsp garlic powder. Fold the foil up and over the mound of ingredients, sealing opposite edges of the foil together by folding them securely over each other. If cooking by a campfire, place the foil packets near the coals. Rotate the packet every 15 minutes so that the contents bake evenly. If using a grill, flip the packets every 15 minutes. There is no need to rotate the packets if you are baking them in a standard oven. Bake for 50 minutes by coals or on the grill or 35 minutes in an oven. Allow the packets to cool for 10 minutes before opening. If your seals were good, there will be water in the packet. The water came out of the vegetables in the form of steam and helped with the cooking process. You can eat the food straight out of the foil, or scoop the food from the packets onto a plate, leaving the water behind. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with mustard, hot sauce, salsa, or sour cream. LCHF Baked Apples You know, I always hated baked apples when I was growing up. Which is weird, because you'd think anything with a ton of butter and brown sugar should taste divine. So, I almost didn't bother trying to work out an LCHF baked apple alternative. Boy, howdy, am I glad I did! This is the best baked apple I ever had! I think the problem with all the baked apples of my youth was that there were too many kinds of sweet going on at once. The cloyingly sweet brown sugar fought with the rich sweetness of the raisins which fought with the subtle sweetness of the apple. In this recipe, the natural sweetness of the apple is allowed to shine! 4 Gala apples (or a naturally sweet apple of your choice) 2 Tbsp lemon juice, divided 1/4 cup almonds, finely chopped 1/4 cup walnuts, finely chopped 1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground 1/2 tsp nutmeg, ground 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened, divided Prepare the fire so there is a good bank of coals. Carefully core the four apples, working from the top using an apple corer or a paring knife. Leave the bottom 1/2 inch of the core in place. (Do not core all the way through the apple.) With half the lemon juice, brush the inside of the apples. In a bowl, combine the remaining lemon juice, almonds, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, and half the butter. Use the mixture to fill the apples. Split the remaining butter into 4 pieces and place them on top of the mixture in each apple. Place each apple in its own sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil and wrap securely. Put the foil-wrapped apples near the hot coals. Rotate them every 15 minutes. Depending on the heat of the coals, the apples may require 30 minutes to an hour and a half to cook. To test if they are done, use a pair of tongs to gently squeeze the apple in the foil. It should give without feeling mushy. Remove from the coals and allow them to cool for a few minutes before opening the packets. Serve warm, either straight from the foil or on a plate. You may substitute your favorite combination of nuts for those suggested by the recipe. If you'd like to prepare these in a standard oven, preheat the oven to 350F and bake the foil-wrapped apples for about an hour. There is no need to rotate them as they bake in an oven but check for doneness as described in the instructions. Best Option When you're out and about and need to eat, the Best Option at Burger King is a Whopper with no bun, cheese, mayo, or ketchup. Keep the lettuce, onion, and tomato. The pickles have no sugar, either. Your best option at Taco Bell is the Veggie Power Menu Bowl with no beans, sour cream, cheese, avocado ranch sauce, or seasoned rice. You can add any of the following: onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, and the fire-roasted salsa. Honestly, with either option, it may be best to just keep moving down the road. 031: LCHF Ideas for Passover and Easter Released: March 27, 2018 (a few days early!) The holidays crept up on us this year. In this special, early release episode, Abby and Anne chat about some ideas to keep Passover and Easter as low-carb and free from sugars as possible. To claim your $5 discount from Dropps, visit our Support page. Passover There's a difference between traditional foods and Traditional Foods. Passover has some that fall into both categories. Carbsmart.com has a lot of great information for Jewish families who want to keep both as part of their seder. Check out some of their options below. Barbo's Original Low Carb "Noodle Kugel" Passover Recipe. Aunt Sadie's Low Carb Brisket Recipe for Passover. Coconut Sour Cream Low-Carb Recipe from Fat Fast Cookbook. Low-Carb Charoset Recipe for Passover. (Leave out the added sweetener, if you wish.) Spinach Mushroom Kugel. Zion Judaica has a section dedicated to Passover gifts for all sorts of people and situations at varying price points, or try Amazon for an even wider variety of options. Easter With all the candy being marketed for this holiday, it's nice to know that the Easter Bunny will respect parents' wishes and leave LCHF-friendly gifts instead. Along with the colored eggs, it has lots of ideas for toddlers, kids, and teens. If the adults in your family exchange gifts, you might consider a new belt or egg-shaped planters for succulents. For Easter dinner, there are a lot of options. Ham doesn't have to be glazed to be amazing. We found to options for you: Perfect Naked Baked Ham and Not So Sweet Baked Ham. For sides, you could opt for Fried Cabbage with Crispy Bacon, Scalloped Cauliflower, Bacon-wrapped Asparagus, LCHF Biscuits (see below), and Simple Deviled Eggs. If you want to skip the ham, but still please the crowd, this Pancetta-wrapped Pork Roast looks amazing. Some dessert options that won't throw you for a loop would be Low-carb Coconut Cream with Berries or Keto Vanilla Panacotta. Here are some cute looking cakes: Easter Bunny Cake and Bunny Butt Cake. You can use these as your inspiration, but use the recipe for Anna's Lemon Cake in Eat Happy for the cake, and Diet Doctor's Butter Cream recipe for the frosting. Use unsweetened coconut flakes and dark chocolate for the accents. You'll have a less-sweet option that will still taste amazing and look adorable on the table! LCHF Biscuits Makes 6-8 biscuits. 10 min prep time. 12 min bake time. Ingredients: 1.5 cups almond flour 1/4 tsp salt 1 Tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional) 2 eggs 4 Tbsp liquid fat + more for greasing the pan. (melted butter is our favorite, but it can also be made with bacon grease or melted coconut oil.) 1/3 cup sour cream 1/3 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese 1. Preheat the over to 400F or 200C. Grease a muffin tin with melted butter, coconut oil, or bacon grease, or line the muffin tin with paper or silicone liners. 1. Mix the first 4 ingredients in a bowl with a whisk or fork to break up any lumps. 2. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, butter, fat, and sour cream. 3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir to combine. 4. Fold in the shredded cheese. 5. Fill the compartments of the muffin tin about 3/4 of the way full. 6. Bake for around 12 minutes, until the center is set. 7. Remove from oven and cool for 3-5 minutes. These should leave the pan easily, but if they offer resistance, slide a table knife along the edge before turning the pan over. They should pop right out.
