Our dreams are often so big that it's not long before you realize that you can't do it all on your own. But you're not even paying yourself and you can't imagine hiring someone else to help. However, that doesn't change the fact that your hours are limited and you've been spending more time on tasks that drain you rather than light you up.   Eventually the thought will occur: “What if I had help?” But the next question immediately follows: “Do I even have time to train and mentor someone else?” Or maybe you wonder how you'd ever hand off the busywork and trust someone else to do it right. Or you feel like you don't know what you're doing so how could you teach someone else to do it for you? If you've had any of those thoughts, today's episode is for you. Today our guest is Katie Bulmer! She's a small-town girl who now lives in the mountains of Chattanooga TN. She loves hiking, yoga, making carpool karaoke videos with her two daughters, cheering on her marathon running husband, and working from home with no makeup and a messy bun. She wrote a blog post that turned into a book, that turned into a speaking platform that has launched into a podcast and opened up more doors than she ever thought possible. She also spent 15 years in advertising. All this marketing experience gave her a front-row seat to the $100 million dollar power of influence sorority women have over trends. She believe it to her bones, Sorority Girls can Change the World. In episode number 169 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out why she chose Georgia Southern University, what was special about the members of Alpha Delta Pi, how much power sorority members have over trends, what she learned from her friend Elaine who quit high school when she was 17, examples on how can sorority members can make a global impact and literally change lives, how sorority women should set a higher standard in dating, how sisters can better support each other and their dreams, what discussions she is having on the "Truth For Your Twenties Podcast", what she usually talks about in mentoring sessions with students, and Katie's faith in God.

Katie Bulmer is host of the Truth for Your Twenties Podcast, a speaker to over 50 colleges nationwide, and passionate about helping sorority women understand their worth and unlock their world-changing power. The heart behind her God-shaped dream is to be who she needed when she was a young woman looking for happiness in the arms of boys, Bacardi, and attempts to be beautiful.   This is Katie's third appearance on the Devoted Dreamers Podcast. If you want to hear what she had to say about figuring out her dream, listen to episode 55. If you want to hear how she pivoted her public speaking business (with great success) during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, listen to episode 176. Katie has been diligently building relationships with 20-somethings via speaking engagements, her podcast and social media for the last several years. When a 30-second video she created on TikTok went viral in early 2021, she was blindsided by what happened next. This short conversation is all about the unexpected reactions she got to that video, how she dealt with criticism from strangers, and what she learned as a result. My big takeaway from this one is the reminder from Katie about how we are to keep our eyes on the prize and stay focused on what really matters, even in the face of adversity and especially after you achieve something you've been working towards for a long time. Real Talk with Rachael Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2021 32:41

This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm talking with the host of the Truth for your Twenties podcast, Katie Bulmer. The mission behind everything Katie does is to be who she needed when she was younger. She is an author and keynote speaker to over 50 colleges nationwide, mom of two girls, TikTok creator, and a big fan of guacamole. Key Points from Our Conversation: Katie was a quiet child who never could have imagined God would call her to public speaking. After a meltdown in adulthood, she realized was focusing her reach on the wrong audience and God was calling her to speak to women in sororities - women who were similar to her when she was younger. The Biblical story of the woman at the well revealed to Katie that she was filling up her cup with things that were temporary. The revelation that she was looking for another human to heal her broken places was a game-changer for her. Katie came to believe that sorority girls can change the world after seeing their influence while working in marketing. She focused on how sororities can use their trendsetting power for good in their communities and the world. Katie felt conflicted when asked to speak to women in venues that didn't allow her to speak about Jesus until her friend Jeff helped her realize that she didn't have to preach to live out the gospel. “I don’t have to quote John 4, I can be John 4.” If you're looking for how to start, look at where God is already working and join in. You don't need a 5-year plan, you only need to know the next step. If you want to find your voice and feel comfortable using it, you need accountability and practice. Social media is a beautiful tool to utilize for practice. Consistency matters. Everyone has something to bring to the table. Even if what you offer looks similar to what someone else has to offer, God has gifted you with specific giftings. There's room for everyone at the table. Don't wait for the perfect time to get started. The only way to get ahead is to get started. It’s okay to be scared, just take one step in front of the other. Your voice is needed. Let’s Get Real Practical: When we lean into God's voice, we find ours. This week ask God to reveal the area in your life that you're not hearing His voice. Katie Bulmer has been traveling the country talking to sorority women about identity, strength, sisterhood, and of course relationships! Katie comes to The Open Door Sisterhood with insight on the big questions parents can help their daughters ask as they enter the dating world. Questions like, "What is important to me?" "What am I dating for?" "What am I looking for in a relationship?" We also cover, how technology impacts dating today, what science can teach young people about "hook up culture" and bonding, how media and pornography influence teenagers' impressions of sex, and how we as parents can ask questions that help our daughters (and sons) come to answers about what they want for themselves. Katie's expertise falls on the girl end of the spectrum, but many of the principles we cover are great for both boys and girls. Have lifelong conversations with your kids about dating and sex, model the healthiest marriage you can to the kids in your home, and pray without ceasing for both your child and the person he or she is dating. We can't go wrong with these overarching goals leading the way.

Katie Bulmer is host of the Truth for Your Twenties Podcast, a speaker to over 30 colleges nationwide and passionate about helping sorority women unlock their world-changing power. The heart behind her dream is to be who she needed when she was a young woman looking for happiness in the arms of boys, Bacardi, and attempts to be beautiful.   When the pandemic hit the U.S. in the spring, Katie's scheduled speaking engagements at nearby colleges came to an abrupt halt. Her hope, like most of us, was that by fall things would be back to normal, college students would return in person to campuses, and her speaking career could resume. As we all know now, that wasn't the case. Instead of letting the circumstances deal a fatal blow to her speaking career, Katie investigated what her target market needed most in the current moment and engaged them in conversations to come up with creative solutions. Those early decisions to adapt instead of quitting doubled her speaking engagements for the year, now in a virtual format, and opened the doors to dozens more campuses able to invite her to share her message via Zoom. I love this woman and her ambition, creativity, and energy so much – even if public speaking isn't your thing, there's so much you can glean from this quick 20-minute conversation. Listen and learn as she shares about: Trying new things, taking risks, and listening to what her audience needed most, Letting her true self shine through in her speaking, The value of the bite-sized message, and Just starting even when you don't know what you're doing. Sorority girl Katie Bulmer was certain she'd found all that life had to offer with the cutest boyfriend, best friends, and a solo cup of hunch punch in hand. But when the makeup came off, the drunken buzz turned into a terrible headache, and the guy that promised forever never called again, she started to wonder if there was more to life. Suffering from a broken heart and a throbbing hangover, Katie ended up at a bible study for sorority women. There she heard about the woman at the well and the promise of “eternal water” that could quench her own insatiable desires to fit in and find happily ever after. When Jesus offered something that would cause her to never thirst again, she was hooked. Today, Katie is a mentor to sorority women nationwide writing, speaking and going on coffee dates with young women to share about the eternal water that changed the world. As a sorority woman myself, I absolutely loved hearing Katie talk about the mission field God has given her on Greek Row. Even if you can't relate to the sorority-girl side of her story, there's so much to gain from our conversation like how sometimes God turns our perspective of the “perfect mission field” upside down. She has a beautiful vision for how sorority girls could change the world, and her experience stepping towards her dream is a reminder that you don't have to get everything perfect, you just have to start somewhere with your dream. Happy Tuesday Ya'll! I am so thrilled to introduce ya'll to my new friend, Katie Bulmer. We stumbled across each other on social media, and I was intrigued by her platform centered around the Greek System in college. Having found Christ through the Greek System, I'm always interested in people's experiences. In this episode, Katie is extremely transparent in talking about her redemption after brokenness in relationship, how her husband's chivalry painted a beautiful picture of Christ's love, the bond that her daughters share, and of course, her book, "Sorority Girls Can Change the World." Even if you weren't in a sorority, I think you'll enjoy hearing about the impact it had on her life. Happy listening!
