Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme, “Best of 1 Peter.” Paul Angone joined us to explain why your 20s can feel so difficult, how comparison can steal your focus, and how God uses the process to grow your character for your calling. Paul is a dynamic national keynote speaker, best-selling author, and organizational consultant, and has authored “101 Secrets for Your Twenties.” Dr. Ryan Cook also joined us to unpack 1 Peter 3 and explain how suffering with hope can serve as a platform for sharing Christ with gentleness and respect. Dr. Cook is a Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Moody Theological Seminary, is also a key writer for Today in the Word, and has a book coming out this June called “Talking with God: Daily Readings in the Psalms.” We then had Colin Smith join us to unpack 1 Peter 1:3-8, explaining how believers can rejoice in a living hope, even through trials, because Christ has secured an inheritance that cannot be taken away. Colin is a Senior Pastor Emeritus of The Orchard Evangelical Free Church and founder and teacher of a daily radio program called Open the Bible. I recorded the first episode of this podcast from the confines of my roommate's closet in our home in Connecticut in September 2020. And now, three and-a-half years later, we've made it to the big stage. From the prestigious Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, it's the first LIVE edition of "The Found Generation" podcast (!!!!!!). And in this very special episode, I'm joined by three very special people from my beloved Seacoast community: Stephanie Paolini is the proud owner of 3 Bridges Yoga in Portsmouth. In our conversation, we dive into her CRAZY backstory, which involves getting robbed at gunpoint, a tough battle with cancer, and much, much more. Despite this madness, she is perhaps the kindest human being on the planet, and Stephanie is someone I have immense respect for. Sam Robbins is often described as an "old soul singer songwriter." A Nashville-based musician whose music evokes the likes of James Taylor, Robbins has gained recognition from extensive touring and from his 2018 appearance on The Voice. In our conversation, we discuss his decision to leave the Seacoast for Nashville, the state of the music industry, and more. He also tries to get me canceled. Jennifer Desrosiers is the CEO/Founder of Altitude Companies, as well as beloved Seacoast staples LANEY & LU, Ginger Fox Baking, and PALETTE. After spending 20 years climbing the ranks of soul-sucking corporate America, Desrosiers left that world behind in 2012 so she could pursue the "integrated lifestyle" she craved for herself. In our conversation, she gives advice to anyone who wants to take the leap, and we also talk about managing ambition, the keys to being a great leader, and what she hopes her legacy will be. Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we kicked off a new weekly theme called Every Age and Stage. We discussed the importance of having wise counsel, especially from older generations. When navigating one's 20's and 30s, its important to have the 3 c's: character, conduct, and curiosity. Our Scripture references were 1 Timothy 4:12 and 2 Timothy 2:22. In these passages, Paul was investing in young Timothy, encouraging him to strive for godly character and conduct. Karl brought us a word from MBI's Chief Operating Officer, Mark Wagner, about the importance of staying curious as an adult. Finally, our guest this morning was Paul Angone. Paul is a speaker, consultant, and author of the book 101 Secrets for Your Twenties. Check out his blog, All Grown Up, and listen to highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Unlike most people, I thrive with change. My comfort zone IS change. And on today's episode, I tell you about five recent changes I've made (or changes life has made for me) and why it's led me to feel a level of contentment I haven't felt in quite a long time. Here's what I discuss: How my type 1 diabetes diagnosis has allowed me to physically feel better than I have in years (5:40) A recent change to my exercise routine that's made me feel more confident in myself than I ever have before (9:40) Why becoming a published author has finally given me the purpose I've been searching for (14:10) How emotionally detaching from my job at Spotify has led me to lean into the things I really love doing (20:20) My first girlfriend in my adult life and why I'm so excited (and nervous) about it (25:11) Plus, I answer a question about how to choose where to live when you feel it's time to make a location change (28:15). When I moved back to Portsmouth, NH this summer, my first order of business (after hitting the beach) was to find a gym. A quick Google search told me that a gym nearby offered a 7-day free trial, so I decided I'd go and give it a shot (0:00). That gym? Seacoast Kettlebell: A hugely popular gym in seacoast NH with a cult-like following. Voted by Men's Health as one of the top 50 gyms in the United States, SKB provides high-quality workouts with high-quality equipment and most importantly, high-quality coaches. Two of those coaches, SKB founder Colin McGarty and head coach Luke Dinwoodie, join me from their Dover, NH location to chat about the following: Why McGarty founded the gym 14 years ago (2:55) How SKB helped Dinwoodie get sober (10:20) Why kettlebells provide an insanely good -- yet very underutilized -- form of working out (14:00) The ideal workout schedule for anyone who wants to get more fit (15:30) Advice for aspiring business owners (24:13) Why SKB's clients stuck with the gym during the COVID-19 pandemic and what the guys attribute that to (28:30) And so much more! The morning routine is the single best way to take control of your day. It's the foundation that gets you into the right mindset, sets your intentions, and creates the space you need for you if you really hope to become the best version of yourself. On today's episode, I discuss three ways to get the most out of your mornings: (0:00): Create stillness (5:15) Do something creative or physical (10:08) Fuel yourself properly (14:12) Plus, I answer a question from a listener about where I see myself 10 years from now (17:30). MEMORABLE QUOTES: "Would you ever let 100,000 people slam down your door first thing in the morning and suffocate you with information? Well, that's exactly what we're doing with our phones first thing in the morning." Artificial intelligence is the buzz term of 2023. You can't scroll social media or read The New York Times without coming across it. With that said, the average person -- especially the older generation -- has a lot of misconceptions about what AI truly is and what its true impact will be on the world now and in the future. So to provide some clarity on this seemingly existential crisis, I've enlisted the help of Google researcher, former Apple intern, Harvard PhD student, and my friend Colby Banbury. From his home in Somerville, MA, Colby and I discuss the following on today's episode (0:00): The benefits of incorporating AI into our everyday lives (9:10) Whether there's any truth to the notion that the robots will take over the world (23:19) What could happen if the power of AI ends up in the wrong hands (27:04) How AI can both help and harm our own self-development, relationships, and sex (30:00) Whether advanced technology like AI is a net positive or net negative for the human race (53:17) And much more. Up until last weekend, I hadn't been feeling like myself for quite some time. I dropped 20 lbs. in three weeks and lacked energy, motivation, and my typical enthusiasm for life. I assumed the feeling was related to depression or an eating disorder, but I was wrong. On the very same day I released my first book, the doctors rushed me to the emergency room. On today's episode, I take you into my 48 hours inside the emergency room and why I'm so grateful for my experience there. Then, I talk about the importance of BIG dreams and how UFC superstar Sean O'Malley uses them to his advantage (12:17). After that, I take a listener question about how to become a minimalist (19:47). IMPORTANT QUOTES: "I'm a white man in the United States of America. I am in the upper 0.01 percent of the world. What do I have to feel sorry about? What do I have to complain about?" "I'm going to turn this opportunity on its head. The obstacle is the way." It's easy to miss something you're not looking for. Psychologists call this inattentional blindness: the failure to notice something right in front of you because other attention-demanding tasks are at hand. This week, my guest is Paul Angone, author of Listen to Your Day: The Life-Changing Practice of Paying Attention. Paul argues that inattentional blindness sums up the day-to-day of most of our lives. We're missing important things, including revelations, ideas, and truths, that are walking right in front of us because we aren't actually looking for them. I'm turning 30 next month and I've been unsure how I've felt about that. I've had countless conversations with guests that shared with me how silly it was to think they needed to “make something of themselves” by 30. Yet here I am, wondering if I've done enough to really make my 20-year-old self proud how I've spent the last decade. That 20-year-old Justin had high expectations about where he was going to be at 30. I've learned over the last decade that you can set your sights on something but life has a whole lot of serendipity. And I don't know, that's kind of the fun of it right? I mean, at 20, I would have never predicted podcasting would be such a significant aspect of my life.So here's to me for letting go of any expectations, being proud of everything I have accomplished, and excited for what's to come in this new decade.I'm done with my poetic monologue but it does set up my conversation with my friend, Paul Angone.Paul spent most of his 20s thinking he was a failure. Working at dead-end jobs to support his real dream of becoming a best-selling author, Paul grinded and hustled any moment he had - lunch breaks, late evenings, weekends - with the hope of creating something that sparked a fire.Sure enough, it eventually happened (although much longer than expected) and Paul has gone on to author best-selling books including 101 Secrets for Your Twenties, 101 Questions You Need to Ask in Your Twenties, and 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing. His newest book, Listen to Your Day: The Life Changing Practice of Paying Attention, is out today and I recommend picking it up.Paul has spent so much time researching and understanding the unique struggles of being in your 20s. We get into a whole lot of conversation about these struggles including finding your purpose, feeling like a failure, and when to make sacrifices vs when to move on. You're really going to like this one.100 reviews before our 100th episode (consider it an early birthday present). If you're a listener of the show and haven't left us a rating and review, we'd really appreciate it if you did. And if you're new, welcome, sit back, relax, and let's learn something new.I hope you enjoy my conversation with…”20-something failure” turned 5-time author…Paul Angone. Are you feeling trapped by the infinite scroll of distractions? According to today's returning guest, Paul Angone, we have all become cultural escape artists, what he dubs the “Refresh Generation.” Paul writes, “We are constantly getting a hit from our phone for the latest update. The iPhone is our cigarette, and too many of us are chain-smoking our phones." It's time to get off the dizzying carousel of phone addiction, and relearn how to listen to ourselves and our day for aha moments instead. Paul believes that “the most successful and fulfilled people on this Earth are simply better at paying attention to what's important.” More About Paul: Paul Angone is one of the most trusted and sought-after voices in the nation to college students, young professionals, and those going through career change. Paul is the bestselling author of 101 Secrets for Your Twenties, 101 Questions You Need to Ask in Your Twenties, 25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing, and today we're talking about his new book, Listen to Your Day: The Life-Changing Practice of Paying Attention. He is also the creator of AllGroanUp.com and the All Groan Up podcast, and a dynamic keynote speaker at universities, corporations, and churches nationwide. We're living at a time in which our capacity attention may be our most valuable asset. If this is true, than our great liability is distraction, and the ways in which we are training ourselves in distraction. Paying attention to the purpose of our lives, and to where God may be inviting us to give of our energy and time is a beautiful opportunity. The world around us is happy to provide us with lots of attractive options for surrendering our attention to mostly meaningless amusements. But God's purpose for you is gentler, quieter, less flashy and more substantial. God's Spirit would love to train you how to pay attention to his presence in your every moment. My guest today, Paul Angone, has written a book to help us with all this, Listen to Your Day. He wants to help us stop drifting, stop worrying, and stop living distracted. I'm looking forward to sharing our recent conversation with you in a minute.
