Dr. Erkeda DeRouen talks to Alexia Childress, the CEO and co-founder of the National Pre-Health Community. They talk about the founding story of the NPHC, building connections in healthcare, and pre-med admissions. [00:37] Introducing Alexia Childress [03:20] Forming the National Pre-Health Community [07:53] NPHC 2023 Annual Conference [11:38] How to Network Online [14:45] What Alexia Would Change About Med School Applications [21:09] What Alexia Would Change About Healthcare Building Your Pre-Med Network At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of opportunities for pre-meds were canceled. There was a lot of change and uncertainty, making it tough for students to prepare for med school applications. As a response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, Alexia Childress and Alejandra Bahena formed the National Pre-Health Community. Within two months, they organized a free virtual event for students interested in healthcare careers. Since its inaugural conference, the NPHC holds an annual symposium that connects aspiring healthcare professionals and provides resources to help them succeed. Building Your Pre-Med Network Networking is not limited to face to face interactions, it can also be done virtually. One of the ways to build connection is through participating in online events. Be engaged and ask questions to resource speakers. Send them emails about what you liked in their presentation. Once you've built some rapport, you can try to request to shadow them if you are ever in their area. Another way to expand your network is by joining online communities. The NPHC has a Discord channel, free resources, and scholarships that you can benefit from. Sign up for the National Pre-Health Community's free annual conference on their website. Join their Discord community through this invite link. You can reach Alexia Childress through her LinkedIn. This week, Kate starts by sharing her thoughts on how being fashionable in the early aughts meant to try the absolute HARDEST, a revelation that feels as glaring as her patent leather pumps after witnessing the shift in collegiate fashion upon spending "welcome weekend" in a college town. Then, she touches on Selling OC before reminiscing via reading through residual sorority stories that listeners submitted the past two years from when she was going to resuscitate the sorority series (before accidentally spending two hours last week analyzing if it was high camp instead). A variety of topics are covered, from sayings like “we plan and God laughs,” to the lore of one-shoulder tops, reviews the Kingdom Chaser/Clout Chaser/Straight No Chaser Venn Diagram of sorority archetypes, discusses the sorority symbols that had the most hot-girl energy, to lusting after the mystery of a non-Greek suitor who (if you can believe it) attended college to *learn,* to name a few. Kate also discusses the differences between NPC and NPHC and then snorkels the submitted responses for how chapters sugarcoated the reasons for why a girl wasn't the right “fit” by saying things like she's “worldly” “cute” or “nice,” among other adjectives that are compliments in real life but death wishes in the Greek system. However, like any true sorority girl, we always end on a positive and Kate promises this will be the last Greek Life-related ep for 2022. Our next guest is Alonzo Cee, a higher education professional from Harlem, NY. He's a two-time graduate of Elon University in North Carolina - First getting his Bachelor's of Science in Statistics in 2018 and then getting his Master's of Arts in Higher Education in 2020. Alonzo believes this: that we have a deep and profound impact on each and every person that lives on this earth. Regardless of intention. Regardless of whether we know them or not. Our capacity to impact others transcends past our physical selves and our direct proximity to other people. It is this interdependence that shapes the way he sees leadership. Leadership is not about power over others, and it is not about management. It is about our impact and our ability to influence. This gives everyone the ability to lead. Because we all have impact. In episode number 223 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out how his childhood of growing up in a biracial family impacts his life today, how his dreams of becoming a professional baseball player ended, why Elon University was the right place for him, what made Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. the right brotherhood, the value of the counseling center at college, what he learned while working at Auburn University, what's involved in being the Program Coordinator for Inclusive Excellence at Elon, how black higher ed professionals can shape young minds and balance racial injustice, COVID-19, and other challenges, how Culturally-based fraternal organizations can be more open minded when it comes to intake, how we can better educate about NPHC or MGC organizations, and how we can live a life of integrity and expect others to join us with everything that's going on in the world today. It's Greek season at the Doc and Croc Show, that time of the year where each fraternity and sorority reveal their new members. Join Doc and Croc as they reminisce about the their days as members of historically black organizations. CALLING ON THE DIVINE NINE...DILEMMA! Should I pledge, if so what? What does it mean to pledge? What is the purpose of black sororities and fraternities? Why do black fraternities and sororities use Greek letters? Pledging is not for everybody and not everybody needs to join a fraternity or sorority. Are black fraternities and sororities harmful to our black culture? This is a powerful and thought-provoking discussion you don’t want to miss. Join the discussion on HOUSE TALK Pre-Game w/Dr. Lauren Pitts this Saturday, November 28th, 2020 at 11 am (EST) on Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) and Blog Talk Radio as she and her Co-Hosts Jared Johnston (Bowie State University), Ronnie Ransome (Virginia State University), Andre` Garlic (Drexel University) and various members from fraternities and sororities representing the National Pan-Hellenic Council address the pledging dilemma.
Happy Founders Day, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity!

In this episode, part of a three-part series highlighting advisor thoughts on the fraternity experience, I interview Robert Braswell, advisor to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority Inc. chapters at Illinois State University.
For Black Greeks, there's always a light-hearted discussion about where it's better to be made: at an HBCU or a PWI (Predominantly White Institution). And having experienced both institutions, I can see the merits of both. There are things that can be done at a one that cannot be done at the other. For White Colleges, Racial Reconciliation is a huge one of those things... With very few White students at HBCUs, it's difficult to engage across color lines within the collegiate setting. However, Black Greeks at White Colleges have an opportunity to develop their ability to confront the White power structure while they're still in school. There's a great deal of value to that. Black Greeks could use the Alumni Support If members of NPHC (Black Greek) organizations are going to be effective at speaking truth to power, they will need the support of those who've crossed before them and are now established in their careers. We all know, systems of White power don't do well at listening to Black people. Jane Black student is likely disbelieved when she challenges John White student. And racial reconciliation cannot happen in that disbelief and prejudice. Because of the bond that is shared by Black Greeks, and because in nearly every town there is at least one highly respected Black person who is a member of an NPHC organization, there's great potential for bringing notable voices into the discussion - simply on the strength of "the Shield." How are you giving young men and women "on the yard" access to your expertise? When you hear about the things being done in Greek Life at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, this question is brought into deeper focus. When great work is being done, there's always a demand for more! And I think you'll be fascinated by the level of engagement being coached by Michele Guobadia, Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life, on a college campus that was literally blocks from where Keith Lamont Scott was killed by police. More support from Black Alumni would help bolster programming at a critical time in American race relations. Moreover, the support and mentorship is invaluable as men and women on campus learn to navigate issues of race while remaining committed to those reasons for pledging in the first place. So, in this episode of Blacks with Power, Michelle shares some of the things that have happened under her leadership. We talk about how Black Greeks in particular are engaging discussions on racial reconciliation that are lifting the entire Greek Community on campus...and how - working together - White & Black Greeks are strengthening relationships and encouraging deeper bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood across organizations and color lines. She even challenged me to get off the sidelines and connect with Black Greeks at the College in my area! Now, what do you think of the work being done at UNC-Charlotte? Do you agree with Michelle's vision? And what from this discussion has shaped the way you engage? We'd love to hear your thoughts...
