Keith Hackett is largely recognised as one of the greatest referees in the history of football, having overseen such famous games as the 1981 FA Cup Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City and the the now legendary league encounter between Mn Utd and Arsenal that resulted in a twenty-one man brawl. Keith is still out there and still active, and he joins Rob this week for an incredible retrospective across his entire career - the highs and lows - and the invaluable life lessons he's taken from the beautiful game across a lifetime of devotion. KEY TAKEAWAYS The work ethic required in order to be one of the greats, is something that isn't always evident in today's world. In Keith's generation, you had to fight for what you wanted, and the results lasted a lifetime. Refereeing isn't just about applying the laws of the game, You're managing an event. You are the man overseeing a spectacle and making sure it works. A fundamental requirement of being a good referee is to win the players over and not work against them, but alongside them, in creating a football match that lives in the memory. Referees don't want to take away from a game. They only really ever come into focus when the game demands it. This is why professionals were established. BEST MOMENTS 'It's amazing when you look back, 1960 when I started refereeing' 'You see the build-up, you see the players, you see the nervousness' 'You're like the conductor of an orchestra' 'In my day there was an affinity with the player' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Keith is a famous English former football referee who began refereeing in local leagues in the Sheffield area. "Brian Clough was one of the rare managers who was in charge at the very top of the game, but still treated referees in a very kind manner." That tribute from former top-flight referee Keith Hackett is a reminder of some of the footballing principles Cloughie always tried to uphold. In this Green Jumper pod, hosted by brianclough.com editor Marcus Alton, Keith talks about his memories of Clough and how his sides respected officials. "He was a deep thinker," says Keith. "On the odd occasion I spoke with him privately, I think he had this view that referees and players each had their jobs to do and the two had to meet on the football field - and he wanted players to show respect." Listed in the Top 100 FIFA referees, Keith also recalls the time Cloughie asked him to ref a friendly match - and reveals whether he would have sent off Paul Gascoine in the 1991 FA Cup Final in which Brian's Forest faced Spurs. When Brian Clough asked Keith Hackett to referee a friendly match against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, player discipline was a top priority. In the forthcoming podcast, he recalls stories of the Miracle Manager and why the behaviour of players was so important to him. The 2019/20 Premier League Season is almost here and with it comes a whole host of new rules. Joining Sam, Peter & Colm this week is former Premier League Referee, Keith Hackett who gives us the rundown on the new rules the players and coaches will need to contend with this term as well as giving his take on VAR, and, among other things, revealing the best player he's referreed. In part two of the show the lads discuss what has been a pretty underwhelming transfer window so far.
Jason and Oliver talk to ex-Premier League referee Keith Hackett about how VAR is being used in football, how it's going to be implemented in the Premier League and does it's future in football look bright?
Steve and Mark are back, this time looking at the month when it all kicked off big time in the English First Division. In what was later dubbed the Battle of Old Trafford, players from Manchester United and Arsenal engaged in a mass on-field fracas that led to the Gunners being docked two points and United one. Joining us to pick the bones out of the ugly confrontation and talk about how officiating the game has changed since are the referee that day, the highly respected Keith Hackett, and fans from opposing sides of the argument - Barney Chilton, editor of the Manchester United fanzine Red News, and author and journalist Layth Yousif, who has been following Arsenal for over 35 years.
Timeline: 8:52 Verbal Abuse in the 1970s 19:47 Refereeing trends through the decades 24:20 Professionalizing referees 38:05 Why top referees have been leaving England 42:22 VAR 51:58 Offside rule This week we are joined by ex-referee Keith Hackett. Hackett started as a referee all the way back in 1960, although he was just doing local games in his hometown of Sheffield. It wasn't until 1976 that he became a full referee in the old First Division at the tender of 32. Five years later he would officiate the biggest match in England, the FA Cup final between Tottenham and Manchester City. He ended up refereeing in the top flight from 1976 until 1994. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named one of the top 100 referees of all time. In 2004 the PGMOL, Professional Game Match Officials Board, appointed him their general manager, where he stayed for 6 years. In our conversation we discuss: the evolution of refereeing, comparing and contrasting verbal abuse in the 1970s versus today, why top referees are leaving England, and why the Champions League is struggling to implement VAR. If you enjoy the episode tell a friend or someone who may be interested. Also feel free to send Keith a message on Twitter, his handle is @HACKETTREF

The world of football and podcasting removes its hats as one this week to salute Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side have clinched the Premier League title without playing to complete a deeply odd footballing week. Sam Dean joins host Thom Gibbs to reflect on the weekend that was, including portentous results for Southampton, Crystal Palace and Huddersfield at the bottom of the table. Total Football heads to Wolverhampton for a chat with broadcaster and Wolves fan Lynsey Hooper about her now-promoted side and how they might fare in the top tier. Plus a word from Keith Hackett on the Gianluigi Buffon shouting incident which could have reverberations far down the footballing pyramid. Keith Hackett, Director of Athletics at Cornell College, visits with @TaiMBrown and the 1.Question Podcast. Hackett talks about leading while facing budget cuts and budgetary restrictions. He specifically discusses the difficulty of cutting sports. A key takeaway that Hackett identifies is that no matter the size of the budget, making responsible, tough financial decisions is one of the key responsibilities of anyone in the chair.
With sheer weight of football threatening to overwhelm us over the festive period you would be forgiven for feeling mildly confused. Fortunately the Total Football podcast is back to help you navigate the 600 or so games which seem to have taken place since Christmas. The Telegraph's Chief Football Writer Sam Wallace joins Thom Gibbs to give his views on who has come out on top since Boxing Day, as well as the latest on Jose Mourinho's contract situation at Manchester United and some transfer window chat, because it is January after all. Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett joins to discuss the effect of fixture pile-up can have on the people officiating the games. Finally Chris Bascombe looks ahead to Friday night's Merseyside derby in the FA Cup, and a possible debut for Virgil van Dijk. Everton striker Oumar Niasse has become the first Premier League player to be charged by the Football Association for (quote) "successful deception of a match official". He won a controversial penalty in the Toffees 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday. Recently introduced laws mean that he’s been charged retrospectively and will now serve a 2 game ban – pending the players right to appeal until 6pm today. Andy Lawson's been chatting with former top flight referee Keith Hackett to get his take on today's news and future of refereeing. *Note* since the call was recorded it's being reported that Everton have contested Niasse's charge. #EFC #Everton #VAR
