At KentOnline you can see drone pictures showing the damage to the building on South Ash Road in Ash. In this episode of Doing the Opposite: Business Disruptors, Jeff Dewing speaks to entrepreneur, investor & philanthropist Vikas Shah. Vikas started his first business aged 14 and is now CEO of Swiscot Group (a textiles & commodities trading business) alongside being a venture-investor in a number of businesses internationally. Vikas was awarded an MBE for Services to Business and the Economy in Her Majesty the Queen's 2018 New Year's Honours List and in 2021 became a Deputy Lieutenant of the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy. Vikas and Jeff discuss purpose. What drives us, motivates us and ultimately leads to success? The answer, it seems, is rarely money. So how do you discover your purpose? And how, as a business leader, can you inspire your team to achieve the organisation's goals whilst also supporting and encouraging their personal development and ambition?A business's values should align with the values of the team. If your values don't match with the organisation your working within, it's unlikely that you'll believe in the mission and contribute in achieving it. You need to find a place of work for yourself that aligns with your core beliefs and where your skills and traits are valued and appreciated. Vikas also explains how he feels that the culture in business has changed over the decades. He felt he did the opposite by opening up and being honest about his depression at a time when it wasn't understood that business leaders could feel like that. He also shares how his honesty helped other people who felt a similar way. Hosted by Jeff DewingWatch the podcast on YouTubeDiscover Cloudfm GroupWebsite | Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn

When the pandemic happened, two-thirds of their sales shut down and they have almost gone back 30 years from where they started, but even in that situation, Bilimoria was able to come up with innovative ideas. He has also shared one of his principles that putting people first is important in running a business. If you're excited, let's dive in!

It's common for young people to feel disenfranchised and that their voices fall upon deaf ears. Less common, though, is founding a charity at 15 years of age to make societal change.Saeed Atcha - the youngest recipient of an MBE in 2019, and the youngest ever Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester - founded Youth Leads UK which, since its inception, has supported over 7,000 young people with opportunities and skills development. What does it take to be driven to achieve so much in such relative youth, and for an initially small project to make an impact on a national scale? In a wide-ranging conversation, Mark reveals the force behind his ambition, his belief in the importance of organisational sustainability, why inculcating a culture of charity within a business benefits not just the beneficiaries but the business itself in the long term, and why engaging the younger members of a community in charitable work is so essential – and, of course, how The Fed has impacted his life.

What We've Learnt: Learning from great minds in the world of business & marketing and beyond
Emma is the Development Director at Eastbourne College. She describes her career as ‘squiggly' but wouldn't have had it any other way, and believes that her varied experiences as a mother, entrepreneur, business owner, volunteer, charity fundraiser and Deputy Lieutenant in the county of Bedfordshire have all been invaluable, pieces of the jigsaw that create the picture of who she is today. Emma is a do-er, her glass is always half full and she never takes no for an answer. Indeed if the answer is no, she just phrases the question in a different way. Her forward thinking, tenacity and perseverance were crucial when she decided to renovate disused buildings in Bedford and convert them into thriving award-winning cafés and community hubs. Emma studied English and Theatre Studies at University and worked in television before starting a family. She took some time off from work but it is hard to keep a good woman down, and if she wasn't running the school PTA, she was putting on events for charity. She lived abroad for many years before settling in Bedford with her husband and 5 children. Emma ran a social media business alongside her park Cafés providing training and social media management for SMEs and charities. She was also President of the Bedfordshire BusinessWomen's Networking Group and Pavilion at the Park, one of her cafés was mentioned in the Good Food Guide as well as being chosen as one of 100 SMEs recognised in the 2018 Small Business Saturday Campaign. She was also recognised by f:entrepreneur as one of 100 female entrepreneurs in the #ialso Campaign in 2019. She is a Vice Patron for Autism Bedfordshire and an Ambassador and on the Senior Management Team for the Schoolreaders Charity. She is the founder of the SoupFest Fundraiser in Bedford and sits on the Bedford Homeless Partnership Executive committee.
What a pleasure to talk to Emma Garrett! In this episode she tells me about her huge range of leadership experience across many different sectors: commercial, non-profit and charitable. She explains how inspiring others and connecting with people have been key for her in her leadership journey. However, above all, she talks about another vital ingredient: kindness. Tune in to hear a very inspiring story from someone who describes their success as "accidental". Anything but, I would say! A truly natural leader!About Emma:Emma is the Development Director at Eastbourne College, an Independent co-educational Day and Boarding school on the East Sussex coast. This is a new role that she has recently taken on and she says it is the perfect culmination of everything she has ever done in her career to date, bringing together her experiences in marketing, charity fundraising, public speaking, PR, events planning and networking. She describes her career as ‘squiggly' but wouldn't have had it any other way, and believes that her varied experiences as a mother, entrepreneur, business owner, volunteer, charity fundraiser and Deputy Lieutenant in the county of Bedfordshire have all been invaluable.Emma ran a social media business alongside her park Cafés providing training and social media management for SMEs and charities. My guest this week specialises in helping clients to harness the power of the virtual platform to grow their credibility, visibility and reputation. Using his years of experience in broadcasting his mission is to encourage leaders to improve their credibility by throwing away many of their traditional communication methods and embrace this opportunity with visual technology to raise engagement across their organisations. He says ‘It’s totally not complicated to motivate teams to make the new world of Zoom, Skype and Teams really interesting and effective. All it takes is some simple skills, proven techniques, and insider tips, which has impact and influence on an audience even though they are not in the same room." My special guest today is the professional broadcaster, Jon Hammond. Bio Reputations, both organisational and personal are precious commodities, especially in times of pressure and stress. Jon Hammond has been preserving, enhancing and protecting the reputations of major organisations and leaders for over 30 years. As a speaker he is a recognised specialist in impactful communication, whether it is face to face or, more recently the demand has been to show companies how to be most effective virtually. As an Executive Coach he advises organisations on communication strategy and supports leaders to deliver really impactful messages. As a (Live or Virtual) Conference or Event Host, Jon puts his many years of experience and professionalism into creating and event for you to be justifiably proud of. More importantly, Jon is fun to work with! He will captivate your team with stories from a lifetime of influencing audiences, both at conferences and events (his maximum live audience at present is 50,000 people!) or on Radio and TV, ensuring that whilst enjoyable, the key relevant messages have an impact and an outcome for your people. As a ‘shy person in a noisy body’ Jon has had a somewhat unusual career. His childhood ambition was to be an auctioneer, so he trained as a surveyor, however a passion and energy for travel and discovering new things led him to become a DJ across Europe. It was then a natural progression to move into broadcasting, initially, pioneering in commercial music radio and then for sixteen years with BBC Radio and Television. During this time, Jon hosted a variety of programmes from hard news to light entertainment and interviewed a vast range of guests from Prime Ministers to Corporate Heads and International Celebrities to Sporting Stars. This experience has made him an in-demand host for ensuring conferences (live or virtual) are on time, have momentum and interest, and more importantly have a resilient outcome. Success though has its downside and whilst he and his family still live in Yorkshire, England, until recently Jon spent much of his time travelling. Most of the time now is spent in his professional studio, speaking, hosting, and coaching teams around the world. With a firm belief in ‘putting back’ he is a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire – England, Freeman of the UK Guild of Entrepreneurs, Vice-President of Northern Ballet Theatre, a Governor of York St John University, and uses his compering and auctioneering skills to raise large amounts for several charities. My guest this week is Executive Chairman of Beaverbrooks the Jewellers, Deputy Lieutenant and recently Retired High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mark Adlestone OBE DL. Mark is one of the most interesting people I've had the fortune to meet so far, as he has unique perspective on what someone should do with their time if they have the resources available. Since the year 2000, Beaverbrooks, under Mark, have donated over £14.5m to over 750 different charities via the Beaverbrooks Charitable Trust and has been consistently listed as a Times Top 100 Companies to Work For since 2004. Like me, Mark is Jewish, and we talk a bit about what that means to him both spiritually and culturally, and the responsibility he feels to do good in the world; not just within the community we live in, but the wider community as well. This episode was recorded live at the Children’s University Conference in October 2019. It features Saeed Atcha MBE giving his keynote address, followed by a Q&A chaired by Children’s University’s CEO, Helen O’Donnell. Saeed is a man who wears many hats – he is Chief Executive of Youth Leads, where he has helped more than 3,000 young Mancunians access volunteering opportunities and skills development programmes. He led his organisation to receive Her Majesty the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, is a recipient of the Prime Minister's Points of Light award and was awarded an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List 2019. He is a Trustee of Step up to Serve, which leads the “I will” campaign to encourage meaningful social action across society. He is also a trustee of Young Manchester, Beacon Bolton Counselling Service, Generation: You Employed, and an Advisory Council member to the Care Tech Foundation. He is a school governor at his former secondary school, Ladybridge High School in Bolton. He is also the Social Mobility Commission’s youngest Commissioner. His story is fascinating and emotive. Sally Gunnell is a British former track and field athlete. In 1986, she won the Commonwealth Games gold medal in the 100m hurdles. Her continuous efforts allowed to her go on to win Olympic gold in 1992 for the 400m hurdles and she currently stands as the only female British athlete to have won Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles. A year after her Olympic triumph, she was made an MBE in 1993, was further made an OBE in 1998 and in 2011 she was made Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex. Until 2006, Sally also worked as a television presenter primarily for the BBC. A recent report from Xero found that a third of successful entrepreneurs have turned to a mentor or support group for advice about their company, compared to just 14% of respondents who ran businesses that had to close. We talk to Sally, who has teamed up with Xero for Rio 2016 to find out what she think the similarities and differences are between business are, and see what advice she would give to someone just starting out.
