My conversation with Sudhir Kakar took place five weeks before his untimely death on April 22nd.  “Freud obviously is very brave and courageous to accept that the world is inadequate and that my desires will never be sufficiently fulfilled. My question - is this in fact the case? I think that everyone has had some kind of spiritual experience, some more than others and in many different contexts, not just religious ones. Spiritual experiences contradict Freud's notion of common unhappiness and the idea of the world as inadequate. What reason do we have to assume that all such common experiences are simply false, that they are based on some kind of false consciousness? Rather, I believe that the inadequacy lies in our own awareness rather than with the world. The world allows for many experiences that would be highly adequate yet we block them - what we call the mundane world is much more enchanted than we think it is."    Episode Description: We begin by considering the embodiment of one's cultural imagination - "one's mental representation of culture" - into one's unconscious mind. Sudhir describes different early child-rearing practices and invites the question about their influence on our later inner lives. He shares with us his early idealization of Freudian/Western ways of thinking and his later development, which returned to the enchanting aspects of his Hindu youth. We discuss the similarities and differences between a Judeo-Christian-based psychoanalysis and one founded on a Hindu imagination. We consider the different notions of God, ritual, and illusion. He distinguishes an 'autonomous person' from a 'communitarian person' and describes the pleasures and burdens of each. We close with his sharing his lovely psychoanalytic origin story connected to his meeting Erik Erikson and discovering "I want to be like him."   Our Guest: Sudhir Kakar was a psychoanalyst, scholar, and writer. He had been a Lecturer and Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Chicago, McGill, Melbourne, Hawaii, and Vienna, Fellow at the Institutes of Advanced Study, Princeton, Berlin, and Cologne, and was on the board of Freud Archives. He had received the Kardiner Award of Columbia University, Boyer Prize for Psychological Anthropology of the American Anthropological Association, Germany's Goethe Medal, Tagore-Merck Award, McArthur Research Fellowship, and Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. `As ‘the psychoanalyst of civilizations', the French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur listed Kakar in 2005 as one of the world's 25 major thinkers. Sudhir was the author/editor of 20 books of non-fiction and six novels. His books have been translated into 22 languages.   Recommended Readings: Kakar, Sudhir - The Indian Jungle: Psychoanalysis and Non-Western Civilizations, Karnac. In this episode, FAQ is: When do I need a mask? Today's Destination is: South Goa, India Today's Misstep- I left my credit card behind. Travel Advice: Get a massage FAQ: When do I need a mask in 2024 Guidelines for wearing face masks vary depending on the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic and local regulations. It's essential to stay informed about the latest guidance from health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and other relevant local health departments. The need to wear a face mask can depend on factors like the prevalence of COVID-19 in your community, vaccination rates, and new variants. Additionally, guidelines may change in response to emerging data and public health considerations. It's common for health authorities to recommend wearing face masks in crowded indoor settings, in hospitals and health care offices, on public transportation, and in places where social distancing may be challenging. However, these recommendations may change, so it's crucial to check for the most recent guidelines from reliable health sources.   Today's destination: South Goa, India South Goa generally has a tropical climate, with the peak tourist season being from November to March when the weather is more relaxed and dry. Monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall, and some beach activities may be limited; I was there in early June, about two weeks too late for ocean swimming.  I stayed in an Airbnb, and my host was downstairs and ran a beauty shop. Her boyfriend ran the nearby restaurant. I walked to pretty much everywhere while I was visiting. It was a slow pace, but I liked that. Beaches: South Goa is known for its pristine and less crowded beaches than the northern part of the state. I found the beaches dirty, and it was monsoon season, so swimming was out of the question in June. Famous beaches include Palolem, Agonda, Colva, and Benaulim. I stayed near Bogmalo Beach. It was laid back, had a local feel, and was close to the main Goa airport. Careful of coconuts falling on you. The winds were strong, and palms plus coconuts were falling fast. I had to cover my head at times to make sure that I did not get hit. Water Sports: Based on the season, many South Goa beaches offer water sports such as parasailing, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides. Make sure the water is safe before you swim. Cuisine: South Goa offers diverse cuisine, including delicious seafood and traditional Goan dishes. I'm not a food expert, but I ate fresh fish and fruits daily.   South Goa, India, is known for its serene beaches, vibrant culture, and historical attractions. Here are some recommendations for things to see and do in South Goa besides the beach. See a wildlife sanctuary, waterfalls, basilica, churches, art museums, and the Naval Aviation Museum by the airport. What is there to do for a solo traveler? My recs are Kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, yoga, and walking on the shore for sunsets. I had a lovely massage from Ranjini, who owns the shop with her husband. I had hoped to swim in the resort pool on the beach, but that was also closed due to monsoons. An aviation museum was one of my favorite places in South Goa. You can now discover the history of aviation in India at the Naval Aviation Museum, located adjacent to the Dabolim or main airport.  I viewed vintage aircraft and learned about Indian Naval Air history, where people asked me for selfies. The electricity went out, which meant the air conditioning, too. It did not go back on for the hour more that I was there.  https://www.goa.gov.in/places/naval-aviation-museum/ https://www.deccanherald.com/india/now-goa-has-two-international-airports-located-50-km-apart-from-each-other-1170723.html Remember to check the current status and accessibility of these attractions, as conditions may change. South Goa offers a perfect blend of relaxation, cultural exploration, and natural beauty.   Today's Misstep- I left my credit card behind.     Today's Travel Advice: Get a massage.    Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

In this episode, FAQ is: Amanda asked me, How can I increase my brain power, mental memory and travel better?   Today's Destination is: North Goa, India Today's Misstep- Tripped on a curb going up. FAQ: Response For solo travelers, Improving brain power, memory, and cognitive capacity while traveling involves a combination of lifestyle habits, mental exercises, and proper nutrition. Here are some tips that enhanced my cognitive abilities on the go: Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can impair cognitive function, so drink enough water throughout the day. Healthy Nutrition: Consume a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Foods with antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins can support brain health. Adequate Sleep: Ensure you get enough quality sleep, as it plays a crucial role in memory consolidation and cognitive function. Physical Exercise: Regular exercise increases blood flow to the brain, promoting the growth of new neurons and improving overall cognitive function. Mindful Breathing and Meditation: Practice mindfulness techniques and meditation to reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance cognitive abilities. Cognitive Training: Engage in brain exercises like puzzles, crosswords, chess, or memory games to stimulate neural connections and improve memory. Learn Something New: Challenge your brain by learning a new language, instrument, or skill. This stimulates neural plasticity and enhances cognitive flexibility.   Limit Distractions: Minimize distractions to allow your brain to focus on the task at hand. Use noise-canceling headphones or find quiet spaces when needed. Socialize: Engage in conversations and social activities. Social interactions stimulate the brain and may help improve memory and cognitive function. Take Breaks During Travel: If you're on a long journey, take short breaks to stretch, move around, and refresh your mind. Physical activity can help maintain alertness. Stay Curious: Cultivate a curious mindset. Stay open to new experiences and ideas, stimulating the brain and promoting continuous learning. Mindful Observation: Pay attention to your surroundings during travel. Engage your senses, observe details, and try to remember them. This can improve observational skills and memory. Remember that consistency is critical when adopting these practices. Incorporate them into your daily routine, and you may notice improvements in your brain power, memory, and overall cognitive function, especially while on the move.   Today's destination: North Goa, India   North Goa is known for its lively beaches, vibrant nightlife, and historic sites. Here are some of my adventures solo and on a budget. This is a Step 5 destination. I arrived in North Goa from the Panaji airport and immediately found the beaches inviting, but unfortunately, not swimmable due to the monsoon weather conditions. If I had been here 15 days earlier, I could have been swimming in the ocean. I stayed in the Pinnacle Holiday Homes for two nights, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a view of the fields in the distance. Lush. The pool for swimming made this hotel a great venue. They cooked my breakfast here, and I went shopping along the road. They only accepted cash at this hotel. Two nights, including breakfast, was $64.00. I went to several beaches, including Calangute and Anjuna, which are both vibrant and laid back.  I spent time at Baga Beach, famous for its nightlife, beach parties, and water sports activities. Baga Beach is a hub of entertainment with numerous clubs and shacks. This beach was dirty. I ate at the St. Francis Restaurant, people wanted selfies with me. The cows came right up to the restaurant for food or scraps. I could see several Portuguese forts, waterfalls, and bird sanctuaries here. I also got a ride on the back of a motorcycle to the Goa Museum. I was waiting outside my hotel for the bus in the midday heat. None came. Finally, a motorcycle taxi driver stopped and sold me on a ride with him, and we agreed on a price. He later realized he did not know the area we were going to. He stopped 6 or 7 people to ask for directions. Finally, he dropped me off at the museum in an industrial area. At least I was safe. The museum was stunning and memorable. After my visit, I had no transportation to my next destination, South Goa. I got a ride from Subodh Kerkar, who founded the museum. He was a physician turned artist, and his museum was dedicated to his works. He exhibited many repurposed bottles, copper, paint, and natural materials created into sea art.  After 4 bus rides, I made it to South Goa, so hear more on the next episode. to summarize, North Goa is a dynamic region with many beaches, historical forts, vibrant markets, and entertainment options, making it a favorite. Today's Misstep- Tripped on a curb going up.   I was in the center of Florence, near a cultural site, reading about it on my phone while standing near a curb. I stepped once, but that was a curb, so I fell on the ground. That hurt. No one was watching me. I checked myself out. Cuts, bruises, and humility hit hard. I got up and was surprised at how much I hurt, but mostly it was my pride. It was July 4, and I had been traveling for two months with one to go. Was I going to retreat? No, I kept going and made the most of it. I rested for the day and was back on my path the next morning.   Slightly altered quote: “WoMan cannot discover new oceans unless she has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
Female Sexuality in India Today: Through an Analytic Lens with Amrita Narayanan, PsyD (Goa, India)

“I was speaking to the tendency of the popular media to perceive narratives of Indian women's sexuality via the lens of oppression. Now, of course, sexual violence against women is an important concern in India, as it is worldwide. But telling the story of violence against women misses the story of how women desire, which is what I wanted to highlight. What struck me from reading the responses from these psychoanalytic interviews that I did was just how much women adapted their Eros to their circumstances. Particularly the older women that were interviewed, those who were older than 35, didn't feel very oppressed, even as they narrated experiences and circumstances that sounded oppressive to me. Of course, if these were patients instead of the psychoanalytic interviewees that they were, one might wait for a kind of realization of oppression, but I wanted to see how psychoanalysis could be useful in mapping how Eros leaks within a framework where oppression is internalized, as it was for many of my interviewees. What I found very interesting was some of the imaginative ways that women found to satisfy their sexual desires while still maintaining community belonging. Viewed from the outside, this can look like oppressive forms of hypocrisy or enactments. But within the frame of these women's lives, it seems like they had found some creative ways of making Eros central and also of having Eros and breathing it at the same time in order to move forward."      Episode Description: Amrita focuses our attention on the presence of women's active sexual desire which often gets obscured by society's tendency to see women as simply victims of violence and oppression. In her book, Women's Sexuality and Modern India - In a Rapture of Distress, she shares with us the results of in-depth interviews as well as latent clinical data from educated and financially comfortable Indian women. We discuss the erotic aspects of modesty; the differences between Indian and International feminisms; the role of the protective parent to foster girlish excitement, i.e. to offer a helping hand to their daughter; and the importance of the involved father to enable an identification for comfortable aggression. We close with a description of an unusual culturally imbued sexual practice that invites Amrita's deep attunement to multiple levels of meaning.   Our Guest: Amrita Narayanan, PsyD, is a Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalyst and the author of Women's Sexuality and Modern India: In a Rapture of Distress. She has a longstanding interest in how a civilization's culture shapes its sexuality and its psychoanalysis.  She is an essayist in The Parrots of Desire: 3000 Years of Erotica in India and in Pha(bu)llus: a cultural history of the Phallus. She also writes a monthly column, Sexual Politics, for a newspaper, The Deccan Herald, Bengaluru. A quirky episode on ghosts, hauntings and horror on this week's Mehfil. Two women writers from India and Pakistan interrogate ghostly encounters and how to write about them. Host Amrita Ghosh welcomes Jessica Faleiro from Goa (India) and Sehyr Mirza from Lahore (Pakistan) to explore the writing of ghosts, hauntings and horror on a personal level as well as with regards to collective traumas such as the Partition or colonial histories. The writers speak of childhood experiences with haunted houses, ghostly sightings and collective psychosomatic experiences. They reflect on whether stories of paranormal afterlives create narratives of resistance in the present. Faleiro speaks about her “real” ghostly experience in her grandmother's ancestral house that sent her off on a journey to write about these topics. Mirza also recalls her grandmother's poignant and moving tales from before the Partition as well as horrifying stories during the period of Partition that inspired Mirza to write. Both writers discuss the rich repertoire of the horror genre within the South Asian context starting with the simple traditions of families and friends gathering around to narrate spooky stories. Ghosh asks the writers about their books. Faleiro's book Afterlife: Ghost Stories from Goa excavates Goa's rich history by weaving in the Spanish Inquisition and Portuguese colonialism through paranormal encounters set within the present. Mirza talks about her edited anthology titled The Other in the Mirror: Stories from India and Pakistan in which she takes on the ghost of the Partition that continues to haunt people and that still creates fear of the “other" by continuing to maintain borders and divisions. She also speaks of her own story within that collection, one that instrumentalizes haunting for political symbolism. Faleiro and Mirza also point to new trends in literature and films within the horror genre in India and Pakistan and the possibilities opened up by the rise of digital media. Lastly, the conversations moves to ask if scary stories set us free from our fears or whether they simply serve to make us more afraid.Jessica Faleiro's fiction, poetry, essays and travel pieces have been published in Asia Literary Review, Forbes, Indian Quarterly, IndiaCurrents, Coldnoon, Joao Roque Literary Journal, Mascara Literary Review, Muse India and the Times of India as well as in various anthologies. Her first book Afterlife: Ghost stories from Goa (2012) is about a Goan family and their ‘ghostly' encounters and her second book The Delicate Balance of Little Lives (2018) is a collection of interlinked stories about five middle-class Goan women trying to cope with loss. She won the Joao Roque Literary Award ‘Best in Fiction 2017 for her short story ‘Unmatched.' Faleiro is currently the Commissioning Editor for the Joao Roque Literary Journal. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Kingston University, UK, talks about creativity, and runs creative writing workshops.Sehyr Mirza is a journalist and creative writer based in Lahore, Pakistan. Her work has appeared in The BBC, Deutsche Welle, Dawn, The News International, Outlook India, Huffington Post, The Wire, Pakistan Today and other outlets. This week's quiz: On 28 May, the Cannes Film Festival was in full swing, and RFI English journalist Ollia Horton was there, sending daily postcards to keep us all up-to-date on the screenings she had seen.  In her third postcard, called “Give peace a chance”, she wrote about a documentary called For the Sake of Peace. I asked you to tell me the names of the two protagonists in the documentary, as well as a brief recount of what they are doing, and where. The answer is: Gatjang and Nandege. They are both peace brokers in South Sudan. Gatjang is a referee in a refugee camp in Juba and uses sports to bring a culture of peace to youths from adverse tribes. Nandege, a young mother, becomes a successful mediator, against all odds.  The film was produced by the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative – the WPDI – which was founded by the American actor Forest Whitaker. Whitaker won Best Actor at Cannes in 1988 for his portrayal of Charlie Parker in Clint Eastwood's Bird.  Whitaker founded the WPDI 10 years ago in Mexico, Uganda, and South Africa, to film portraits of young peacemakers who had been trained by his organisation. The foundation is now present in eight countries.  For the Sake of Peace was awarded the honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes this year. The documentary was directed by Christophe Castagne and Thomas Sametin and was produced by WPDI.  In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question, too: I asked you to share with us what makes you feel better on your lowest day. The winners are: RFI Club member Atish Bhattacharya from West Bengal, India. Atish had the correct answer to the quiz and is also this week's Bonus Question winner. Atish Bhattacharya noted that gardening makes him feel better when he feels blue. This is what he wrote: “When I am down and in the blues, I choose to spend time in my garden and take care of my plants. At the same time, I play music on my mobile phone. Sometimes it makes me believe that plants also love music. There are many plants in my garden, flowering plants, vegetable and fruit plants, cactus, succulents, and my favourite: my bonsai plants. They need a lot of care and love. Their happiness makes me glad and I feel better. And the happiness becomes doubled, tripled when my little daughter joins me and waters the plants with full enthusiasm. That's it. That's happiness.” The other winners this week are all RFI Listeners Club winners, and two are from Bangladesh: there's Khadija Aktar Najnin from Dhaka and Mohammad Mustansar Billah from Sunamagan. Hailing from Goa India, there's Zenon Teles for the Christian - Marxist- Leninist-Maoist Association of Listening DX-ers, and last but not least, Timothy Ofori from Kumasi, Ghana. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “My Direction” by Nabil Khaldi, performed by Oud Caravan; “Rasayil” by Ibrahim Al Kashif and Al Lahn Al Khalid, sung by Ibrahim Al Kashif; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “Tour's End” by Stan Getz, played by Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio, and “Final” by George Duke, performed by the George Duke Trio with guitarist Takeshi Akimoto. Marilah kita berdoa. Dalam nama Bapa... Ya Tuhan semoga pada hari ini semangat hidup santo Fransiskus Xaverius memenuhi diri kami masing-masing, keluarga, komunitas, masyarakat dan Gereja kami. Salam Maria ... Dalam nama Bapa ... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/media-la-porta/message

Some hard hitting techno from our man Shaun Moses. This is 100% pure disco shit. Give it a loud listen. About the artist: Shaun Moses is a name that one’s going to be seeing a lot more of. Hailing from Goa (India), the techno producer and DJ crafts his unique style of dark and pulsating techno, while still maintaining a raw aural aesthetic. His DJ sets, showcase an explosive snapshot of his capabilities, bursting at the seams with atmospheric synth hazes, rolling percussive hits and deep powerful bass lines. Over the past few years, Shaun has performed at some of the best stages and venues across India while releasing on many popular international labels. As DJs started playing out his tracks across dance floors around the globe, Shaun’s name quick rose in the international circuit and he started touring extensively across Europe and Asia. After playing at some of the best clubs and parties in cities like Barcelona (Spain), Zurrieq (Malta), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Regensburg (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), Vienna (Austria), Moscow (Russia) and Bangkok (Thailand), he continues to expand his touring schedule with each passing year. In the past, Shaun’s shared the decks and has had his productions supported by internationally acclaimed DJs / producers such as Paco Osuna, Joseph Capriati, Johnny Kaos, Matt Sassari, Pig & Dan, Hollen, Luigi Madonna, Thomas Schumacher, Raul Mezcolanza, Adana Twins, Whyt Noyz, Wouter De Moor, Dana Ruh and Loco & Jam just to name a few. With his sight on some of the biggest labels and stages in the world, Shaun can easily be dubbed as one of the biggest techno exports from India. Why blend in when you’re born to stand out? . 5 years ago I had the pleasure of kickin’ it with L-FRESH The LION on my couch in West Melbourne, chewing the fat on Punjab, meditation, music and all the simple things in life. 5 years and 221 episodes later, it brings a broad  smile to my face that L was my 9th everHot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! podcast guest, that he’s part of my journey and I his. . And man L-FRESH has been BUSY!!! From festival appearances all over Australia, L-FRESH The LION addressed the United Nations Headquarters in New York in late 2018 and shared a stage in London with the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate, Pakistani human rights and female education activist Malala Yousafzai.  . He was also selected as an ambassador for YouTube’s Creators For Change global initiative, with his resulting video RACI$T / OUR WORLD premiering at the Tribeca TV festival in New York and accumulating close to half a million views.  . Step inside our world as we chat about the beauty of Goa (India), where he shot the music video for his latest single, 'Born To Stand Out’, how he stays refreshed and hungry at a time where he’s never been busier, our shared love for NBA, ‘Culture Strong’ x 500K+ views and so much more. . Breaking ground and exceeding expectations is a recurring theme of this South West Sydney artist, having performed alongside hip hop icons such as Nas, Talib Kweli, Chali 2NA and Dead Prez, and even the legendary Sir Elton John, it’s wonderfully refreshing that  L-FRESH The LION remains so humble, thoughtful and community-focused.  I doff my hat to you, sir.   . About something that could be out of time, free from trends, from the manifested melody, rhythm or harmony. Greetings rainbow warriors. I’m coming to you from Goa India today. I’ve been healing my body and mind with the sun and the sea here, and will be teaching a slew of workshops over the next couple of weeks. Feeling super blessed to be on this epic magical mystery tour. Are you guys following my instagram yet to follow my world tour? Catch me at visionary_lifestyle_guide and of course @visionarylifestylepodcast for show announcements. We have a Visionary, Yoga and Lifestyle Facebook group that I’d love to see you in too, so look for that in the show notes along with links to Daisy’s work as well. Find the show notes on my website at visionary-lifestyle.com/podcast Today's guest is Daisy Kaye. Daisy is a wellness facilitator, an advocate for maintaining a holiday lifestyle and dancing in the mundane world. She’s a Universal Tao Instructor, Breathwork Facilitator, Body Worker, Herbalist and founder of Sacred Cacao 5 Element Dance and is blessed to facilitate sacred space, teach and practice body-work globally. She’s the founder of Daisy's Dancing Alchemy and Live A Holiday Life style; whose missions are to bring health, wealth, happiness, self-love, abundance and playfulness into people's lives through dance and presence practices. Her methods stem from ancient Taoist and Tantric Philosophies; creating harmony through integration and personal responsibility of mind, body and spirit. Daisy creates retreats and workshops, inviting people into the possibility of how it feels to live a happy, healthy life, everyday. From singles and couples, to mothers and daughters; She holds space for all to flourish in abundance and happiness.   I met Daisy at the New Earth Festival in Bali and we squeezed in this interview as one of her students was about to lead a cacao ceremony.  We were interrupted a bunch of times during the interview so it may sound a little choppy, but I assure you, there is a lot of rich content in this brief conversation. Have you been called to a participate in a cacao ceremony? If so, this may help you understand why you’re interested in it, and the potential this experience has for you. I really enjoyed meeting Daisy and love her uplifting energy. I did get to The Santuary in Thailand after this interview but unfortunately didn’t get to participate in a ciao ceremony. I’m trusting that the right one in the right place will align when it’s the perfect time. https://www.liveaholidaylifestyle.com
