My Favorite Mistake
Selling Books Isn't the Publisher's Job: Terry Whalin What Authors Must Learn Early On

My Favorite Mistake

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2025 49:10

My guest for Episode #307 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Terry Whalin, an accomplished editor and author of more than 60 books, several of which have sold over 100,000 copies. Terry is the owner of Whalin and Associates, a communications firm, and he serves as an acquisitions editor for Morgan James Publishing. Drawing from decades of experience in both writing and publishing, Terry shares a favorite mistake that changed the course of his career—offering valuable insights for first-time authors and seasoned professionals alike. Episode page with video and more His most recent book is 10 Publishing Myths: Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed. Terry's favorite mistake took place in 2007, when a high-profile publishing event jolted him into realizing just how little he was doing to promote his own books. Despite having secured multiple six-figure advances and a long list of published titles, Terry was receiving negative royalty statements—his books weren't earning out. That wake-up call led him to take what he calls 100% responsibility for his own success, adopting a daily commitment to book promotion, content creation, and building an online presence. From that turning point, he launched a blog (now with over 1,700 posts), grew a substantial social media following, and became a consistent voice in the author education space. In the conversation, Terry and Mark explore the myths and realities of book publishing—especially the misconception that a publisher will handle marketing. Terry outlines how today's authors must become active promoters, the importance of building an email list you control, and why giving away ebooks can actually drive print book sales. He also shares hard-earned lessons about evaluating publishers, avoiding scams, and understanding how traditional and independent publishing models differ. Whether you're writing your first book or navigating your next launch, Terry's insights are a masterclass in professional ownership and long-term thinking. Questions and Topics:   What's your favorite mistake? Was it just a bad assumption to think publishers would promote your book, or do they sometimes mislead authors? Is the idea that a publisher will handle marketing one of the common myths in publishing? What specific actions did you start taking after realizing you needed to take full responsibility for your book's success? Are you actively guesting on podcasts and using social media today to promote your work? Do social media efforts actually help sell books—or is it more about visibility and exposure? What's your take on claims like “#1 Amazon bestseller”—do those really help authors sell books? Can you explain how the Morgan James model differs from traditional publishing? Why do you ask authors to commit to buying 2,000 copies of their own book? What role does giving away ebooks play in driving print sales? What should authors consider when deciding between traditional, hybrid, or independent publishing? How can aspiring authors avoid getting scammed by predatory publishing companies? What's the role of an acquisitions editor, and how do you evaluate submissions? Do pre-orders really matter for bookstore placement? Why should authors consider writing for magazines or newspapers to build their platform? Do you think authors give up too early on marketing their books? Is building an email list still essential for authors, even in the age of social media? Should authors be cautious about relying too much on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn?

If you've ever struggled with communication, boundaries, or making relationships actually work, this episode with Dr. Mark Hicks is for you—whether it's love, friendship, family, or coworkers, these insights can change the way you connect. More info, resources & ways to connect - https://www.tacosfallapart.com/podcast-live-show/podcast-guests/dr-mark-hicks In this episode of Even Tacos Fall Apart, Dr. Mark Hicks joins us to talk about what makes relationships thrive. As an author, counselor, speaker, and relationship expert, Mark is passionate about breaking down what makes love last—whether it's with a partner, friends, family, or even coworkers. Mark's book, Learning Love: Building a Life That Matters and Healthy Relationships That Last, explores five key components of love that anyone can practice to create stronger, healthier connections. And guess what? The first one might surprise you—grief. He explains that people who struggle with relationships often have past wounds that make them put up walls. Learning to grieve and heal is the first step in opening up to real connection. The other components—emotion, practicality, acceptance, and passion—build on that foundation, giving us the tools to communicate, work through conflict, and genuinely enjoy our relationships. We also talk about the cultural stigma around mental health and relationships, particularly how people hesitate to seek therapy. Mark is firm: everyone should see a counselor. Just like we go to doctors for physical health, therapy should be a regular part of life. He even suggests treating it like going to the dentist—check in every six months, whether or not you think you need it. One of the biggest relationship mistakes? Trying to “go it alone.” Mark points out that relationships are shaped by how we grew up, and let's be real—most of us didn't get a perfect roadmap from our families. Whether it's through therapy, coaching, or just being open to learning, improving relationships starts with improving yourself. And that means self-love. He reminds us that we can't love others more than we love ourselves—so if we're struggling to show up for our relationships, it might be time to look inward. Of course, we also get into the fun stuff. Mark and his wife travel the country as professional house and pet sitters, which means he's often writing his books (or ghostwriting others) from someone else's home while caring for their pets. He also shares his unexpected fascination with the Manson family case, how past heartbreak shaped his views on love, and why laughter—even forced laughter—can completely shift your mindset. This conversation is packed with insight, practical advice, and encouragement for anyone looking to improve their relationships. Whether you're trying to heal from a breakup, struggling to communicate, or just want deeper connections, Mark's approach gives you real tools to make it happen. His book is being republished by Morgan James Publishing, with pre-orders opening in November and a full release in June 2025. In the meantime, you can grab his free eBook for a breakdown of the five components of love.

If you and I were having coffee together, and I asked if you believed in the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus, you'd probably reply, “No, those are nice ideas but they're not real because they're myths.” It's pretty easy for us to distinguish reality from fiction when it comes to figures like Santa Claus. However, it's not so easy for writers to distinguish fact from fiction when it comes to publishing. That's why I'm glad my friend Terry Whalin is here to help us dispel publishing myths that can lead you astray. Let me tell you a bit about him. Terry Whalin understands both sides of the editorial desk. A former literary agent, Terry is an Acquisitions Editor at Morgan James Publishing. He has written more than 60 books for traditional publishers and several books have sold over 100,000 copies. Terry has also written for more than 50 magazines. As a frustrated editor in 2004, Terry wrote Book Proposals That Sell: 21 Secrets to Speed Your Success, which has nearly 200 5-star reviews and has helped many authors. Terry is an active member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and lives in Southern California. Today we're here to talk about another one of his fantastic book, which is 10 Publishing Myths: Insights Every Author Needs to Succeed. These are some of the myths we discuss (you'll love these!): My publisher will sell and promote my book. Writing a book will make me famous. I can't call myself a writer unless I publish a book. The editor will fix all my mistakes. Good writers are born, not made. My book will be a NYT bestseller. The life of a writer is glamourous. You can connect with Terry at his website, https://terrywhalin.com, as well as visit https://publishingoffer.com, where you can download the 11th publishing myth. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Karen Hunsanger, an incredible editor known as “The Word Wizard.” I've worked with Karen many times, and she is your secret weapon for crafting the highest-quality book possible. RECURSOSGraziano, N. This December, I'm bringing you The Farewell '23 Series, the perfect collection of New Year rituals to do at the end of the year to appreciate the past twelve months, reflect on our experiences, leave some of the unwanted energy behind, cleanse ourselves from it, and just keep what we do want to come with us to the year ahead. All four episodes of The Farewell '23 Series will air on Fridays. On Today's episode, the last episode of 2023, I'm not alone. My friend Julie (from Julie Habits) is joining me, and together we will teach you how to create a vision board, why to call it an action board, why you should make a vision board based on the science behind it and how to do USE it the right way so that it is a powerful tool that helps you manifest your dream life. With the help of the teachings of neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart, author of The Source.Creating a Vision Board/Action Board entails a lot more than building a collage of pictures than inspire you (this is NOT a mood board), it's about truly reflecting about the person you want to become and the things you want to accomplish in life. Julie has prepared a sheet for you to answer questions and think about your life. Here you will find the Vision Board/Action Board Sheet by Julie Habits!   "Even if you only sell three copies, it is worth the time. You've earned this experience as an author, and it's an opportunity to engage with your readers and leave a lasting impression." - David Hancock Many authors wonder about the value of book signings. During this episode we dive deep into the topic, discussing why book signings are so important and how to make the most out of them. As a publisher David often gets asked if book signings are worth it. There are people on both sides of this. Some that clearly share that they do not want sit for 90 minutes to 2 hours and sell three books. They feel it is a waste of time. Then there are others who find book signings to be an incredible experience. They feel like they meet some amazing people and get the chance to talk about their work. They count down to the opportunity to do it again. In the world of publishing, book signings hold a value beyond the surface level. Not only do they serve as a great way to connect with readers, but they also create a powerful platform for authors to make their mark in the bookstore, quite literally. They are a secret weapon for boosting book sales and audience engagement. Don't hesitate to explore unconventional venues like grocery stores or jewelry shops for your book signings. Anywhere there are people, there is an opportunity to connect with readers. There are certainly challenges and not all signings will be perfect. However, the thrill and fulfillment of directly connecting with readers can give authors unanticipated inspiration. There is not much that can motivate your next book like seeing someone's eyes light up as they get their copies autographed. Take a listen to hear how a successful book signing can: create a lasting impression on your audience lead to prime bookstore placements have the potential to bring a notable increase to your sales If you are thinking about a book signing, then consider attending a book signing event in your area to meet authors and see how different places host. The publishing industry has changed over the last two decades, and while we can't anticipate the challenges that are ahead for Morgan James Publishing, he knows they have learned a ton. When David first stepped into the world of publishing, he wanted to create something unique while challenging the norms. There was a lot of excitement when Morgan James Publishing was founded in 2003. The business was driven by a passion to empower authors and offer them more flexibility and speed to market. He knew that he wanted to provide a personalized experience with a traditional feel, but also allow authors to retain ownership and control over their intellectual property. Many authors start feeling frustrated and discouraged by the lack of collaboration from publishers. Despite their efforts to build strong author-publisher relationships, they just seem to get nowhere. Unfortunately, they aren't alone. That is what lead to the founding principles at Morgan James Publishing. Throughout the years, the vision persisted, continuing to make decisions together with the authors while focusing on their big picture. As credibility, distribution, and opportunities for the authors increases, David remains grateful for the support and growth of Morgan James Publishing. My guest Glen Williams is a retired police officer having served 26 years in patrol and as a detective.  Glen openly and honestly shares his story of developing PTSD after witnessing so much trauma and death during his career and not being able to talk about it.  In his personal life, he suffered from two divorces as a result.  Glen has reinvented his life and is now an author, speaker and communications coach who is dedicated to helping others. His memoir is titled Bridging the Gap-An Inside Look at Communications and Relationships After Traumatic Events. His goal is to help reduce the effects that PTSD, divorce, and suicide have had on trauma exposed professions. Glen used many different tools to recover and is now happily married. He shares these tools as well in his memoir. I met Glen at a Mastermind Retreat for authors last year as he is a fellow Morgan James Publishing author.  You will indeed be inspired by Glen's profound story of pain, loss, and ultimate triumph!Book: Bridging the Gap-An Inside Look at Communications and Relationships After Traumatic EventsWebsite: https://www.gdubauthor.com/Social media:Instagram: instagram.com/gdubauthorFacebook: facebook.com/GDubAuthorLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/glen-williams-950488265/

Leonaura has always been ambitious: good at setting and achieving goals. She became a doctor. She became a mom before her age deadline. But then she stopped working because her son was critically ill. This all made sense and she managed these unexpected changes.  But after her second son also required her to stay at home because of critical and chronic health problems, Leonaura reduced her self-identity to simply “a mother of two sick kids.” And depression kicked in full force. How did she pull herself out of depression? What choices did she make that changed her perspective and got her doing things that brought her joy and meaning again, apart from being “just” a mom. Why wasn't being “just” a mom enough for her?  Bio Dr. Leonaura Rhodes is on a mission to help people increase their happiness, health, and abundance.    She began her career as a physician in the UK. When studying for her MPH she became obsessed with the science of wellness, illness prevention and peak performance. Her love for learning led her to train as a counselor, coach, relationship strategist, neurotherapist, and brain health coach. She is also a published author, course creator, corporate trainer and public speaker.  She has worked as a Results Coach and Business Results Trainer for Tony Robbins (Robbins Research International).    Her own battle with chronic stress and severe depression led to a passion for helping people get physically and emotionally well. In 2014 she published “Beyond Soccer Mom: Strategies for a fabulous balanced life” (Morgan James Publishing), a guide to creating a meaningful, happy, healthy life for women.    She has worked with thousands of people to help them intentionally create their future life with a process called  "Peak Life Design ". Her motto is "You can settle for an ordinary life, or you can become extraordinary". Originally from England, Leonaura now lives in Norwalk, Connecticut with her husband and two young adult sons. In her spare time you'll find her kayaking, taking nature photographs and letting her hair down at concerts and music festivals.  Guest Info. www.DrLeonauraRhodes.com Julie's Info.  https://linkedin.com/in/julie-browne-courage-ignite https://instagram.com/juliebrownecourageignite  https://facebook.com/juliebrownecourageignite Podcast — Bold Becoming Book — Masters of Change -- PRESALE NOW https://mastersofchange.presale.manuscripts.com/registration/select Website Email — Julie@courage-ignite.com Music — Happy African Village by John Bartmann --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/julie-browne/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/julie-browne/support
