One strategy is to persist in a museum-like preservation of the past, another strategy is to courageously continue building with history. The roots of Studio Lotus lie in learning history and local environment. They follow an iterative and incremental methodology of innovation. Studio Lotus takes a deep contextual approach to its work and combines this with a strong focus on tactile and sensory qualities of space. Their design process looks at sustainability through multiple lenses of cultural, social and environmental impacts. There is an active engagement in integrating local skills and resources with state of the art materials and technologies. We talk to Ambrish Arora from Studio Lotus in New Delhi / India about this approach and its challenges.

Description: This week's podcast features Adhirath Sikand, biochemist, entrepreneur, and PhD candidate at the University of Southern California Los Angeles. I have deep appreciation for Adhi's experience, in particular because as a scientist, he's worked and studied in three different countries (New Delhi India, Canada and now the USA). His unique viewpoint provides an opportunity to assess the cultural differences between countries and identify opportunities we can integrate into the USA to maintain our leadership position in many areas of science. In addition to having a deep technical background in biochemistry, working on synthetic surfaces in cancer cells, Adhi is also an entrepreneur and leader, serving as BCLA President in 2020. Adhi shares my passion for democratizing access to biotechnology and lowering the barriers to entry for recent graduates and industry outsiders to found new startups. Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was assassinated at 9:29 a.m. on 31 October 1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star. Operation Blue Star was an Indian military action carried out between 1 and 8 June 1984, ordered by Indira Gandhi to remove the Sikh Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers from the holy Golden temple of the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab. The collateral damage included the death of many pilgrims, as well as damage to the Akal Takht. The military action on the sacred temple was criticized by Sikhs both inside and outside India.
Russell and Robert meet legendary UK based queer artist/photographer Sunil Gupta (b. 1953, New Delhi India). From Here to Eternity is Gupta's first major retrospective, offering a complex and layered view of his unique transcontinental photographic vision. Born in New Delhi, India, relocated to Montreal, Canada, before studying at the Royal College of Art in London, Gupta has been using photography as a critical practice since the 1970s. Subversive, impulsive, personal and political, Sunil Gupta's socially engaged projects have focused on such issues as family, race, migration and the complexities and taboos of sexuality and homosexual life. His work has been instrumental in raising awareness around the political realities concerning the fight for international gay rights and of making visible the tensions between tradition and modernity, public and private, the body and body politics. Bringing together works from across his divergent and extensive career, From Here to Eternity features a range of series’ from street photography (Christopher Street, 1976) to narrative portraits (From Here to Eternity, 1999), along with highly staged and constructed scenes (The New Pre-Raphaelites, 2008) and a selection of early investigations into digital image making (Trespass, London, 1992-1995). From participating in New York's active Gay Liberation Movement in the 1970s to his more recent campaigning for gay liberation in India, Sunil Gupta has been inspirational to generations of photographic activists and LGBTQ+ rights campaigners. What does it mean to be a gay Indian man? This is the question that follows me around everywhere I go and is still ever present in my work – Sunil GuptaThis special episode was recorded on 22nd July 2020. We listen today to Natalie Born, she's a strategic corporate innovation expert consultant, she describes her career journey and points of views around the art of corporate innovation to drive organizational growth. She has been focused on creating corporate innovative strategies to drive growth and disrupt industries for almost two decades. Natalie implements the innovation design process to make a positive impact on leadership's way of thinking about innovation to drive revenue and market share results.Natalie has an incredible career background working in senior executive management roles at leading companies within diverse industries, such as CareerBuilder, First Data, ADP, IHG and now currently as VP of Innovation at Territory.coWe have a very powerful conversation around what organizations can do to embrace and execute innovation, how to approach innovation with a team and futurist mentality, and how to be disruptive in your industry to win. Growing up in the Peach StateGrowing up in a small town of Duluth, Georgia for Natalie, she always felt that she was the only one, she didn't belong, in the '80s there wasn't too much diversity in suburban Georgia. However she took that feeling of being different through her collegiate experience from Oglethorpe University to Maryland's Global Campus for her MBA and during an overseas business education program in India during her MBA, all these experiences began to shape herself to the corporate professional executive and consultant she has become“Noticing that I was different at a young age was difficult, but as I grew older I embraced being different and how special it is to bring your differences to the table" – Natalie Born. Challenges to break through doors, being the only women and of color at the table in companies and tech Natalie describes and shares how her childhood, collegiate experience, and early corporate experiences prepared her to have a diversity and design thinking approach throughout her career. “Alot of people talk about luck, I personally don't believe in luck, but rather in alot of hard work, working twice as hard to get ahead” – Natalie Born. What a reverse merger at CareerBuilder taught her about having a superior work ethicNatalie describes how a week after the company she was working within HeadHunter was acquired by CareerBuilder and being fired and hired again as part of the leadership team by CareerBuilder in a span of a week. She has always had a drive to over-deliver and do much more than the bare minimum, always striving 150%, to wanting to do more to get to the next level. Her Reason Why and Origin of Her Entrepreneurship Journey“My career reached a level after more than 15 years in corporate, where it wasn't about me and I really wanted to help others around ideation, innovation and knowing how to help people freed from their mind ” – Natalie Born. Becoming intentional about providing diversity and inclusion towards a more equitable and innovative corporate culture."Cheryl Sandberg talks about until you have a diverse set of candidates how can you pull the trigger on hiring that person. You need to bring the elephant into the room and painting it red and having those discussions around diversity and the same opportunities for career advancement." Natalie Born. The Art of Corporate Innovation with Design Thinking and Planning for Future Growth“Innovation is no longer individual based, it's now very team-based, so it's all about getting the best and brightest team together and then you draw, putting all the ideas on the table, bad and good ones, to let the good ideas take shape and win.” – Natalie Born. Most companies will be disrupted by not being disruptive proactively“Too often companies are so focused on how much money we are making today that we are not creating the future. My fear is that large organizations are not disrupting themselves, so they end up being disrupted” – Natalie Born. Pivoting and forecasting into the future is more imperative than ever“If your a leader you have to be a futurist. Corporations struggle with leadership side or innovation and the ability to create the future."– Natalie Born. Back to the Future with Natalie Born“Don't sweat the small stuff, overempahasis the things that have long-term impact and under-emphasize the things that have short-term impact” – Natalie Born. India’s Hindu-supremacist BJP government has stepped up its state repression by ramming through areactionary Citizenship Amendment Act in early December 2019. The law grants Indian citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan but denies that right to Muslims from any country in South Asia. Immigrants from other countries in the region, including Tamils from Sri Lanka and Rohingya from Myanmar, are also excluded.Workers, students and other parts of civil society have been protesting since November last year in an effort to defeat the legislation, and protests are continuing, with a nationwide general strike on 8 January bringing tens of millions of workers to the streets. In Shaheen Bagh, a neighbourhood in South Delhi, some 200 women have been holding a permanent protest camp for over a month, and vow not to be moved until the law is lifted. On the program today to discuss the Citizenship Amendment Act of India, it’s implications for communal violence, and the growing protest movement in opposition to it, we are joined by Shivani Kaul, from New Delhi India.
What a wicked couple of weeks I must’ve been naughty in a former life or this one!As many of you know I’m planning My Trip and I leave on Friday the 13th, unlucky date for some, as I’m heading to China, Bangladesh and coming home via New Delhi India. This intrepid journey is to celebrate my 50th. My main goal is to travel on top of a train in Bangladesh and take some awesome street photography, as well as a whole lot of video blogs for my TikTok account.Shit happens and shit happened when my car was parked on the side of the road last week. A 17-year-old guy who wasn’t concentrating on his driving, was dropping off a customers vehicle after it had been serviced from Blackwells Mazda. He crashed into my vehicle and set off his airbags, he went on two wheels flying past the doctors surgery window. I ran out to see what had happened and if he was ok and noticed he had smashed into my car.As you can imagine this wasn’t really something I needed to deal with just before Christmas, especially when I’m arranging my holiday. Everything went blurry and I didn’t really want to burden the young fella who made the mistake so when I had a moment to re-analyse the situation I started to assess what I needed to do.With the advice I got from members of ELITE : SIX I was soon in a rental car/van at no cost. Did you realise if you’re involved in a not-at-fault accident you are legally entitled to a rental car and there is a company setup to handle all this for you, Right2Drive.Next, I was instructed how the process works best to get my vehicle written off. The powers that be were telling me that it wouldn’t be written off because there’s too much money tied up in the new vehicle.Mike from Ferrymead Automotive went the extra mile to turn down a $17,000 repair job to give me the result I wanted, an unselfish act of bravery for any business person!Next minute the insurance company tells me that they going to settle for $24,500. However, the finance left on the vehicle was for $28,000, it was a bit of a hard pill to swallow. With the advice from my insurance company, who said they were batting for me, suggested if I didn’t agree on the figure, I could go back to the valuer and tell him I disagree with this valuation. The phone call went something like this, “Hi I’m Danny, you valued my car” he said “I value hundreds of cars, I’m not familiar with the vehicle you are talking about, put it in an email and I’ll answer it tomorrow” and he hangs up!So I had the car valued in the morning, ironically the company I purchased from, who isn’t allowed to give a valuation because of a conflict-of-interest, said the vehicle would be worth $27,000 as it has 25,000 km’s on the clock. So I emailed the valuation guy with the receipt of payment for purchasing the vehicle and also the valuation that I got from Holland’s (the original dealer). Half an hour later I got a reply apologising that he had got the amount wrong and said we will now pay you $26,000 based on four other 2019 cars that were selling in New Zealand. Being Internet savvy, I found one of the vehicles for sale for $26,500 that had 13,000 km’s on the clock, it was a Japanese import, my one was New Zealand new, obviously not like for like.As I was composing my email back to the valuer, the insurance company rings. “Hello this is State Insurance, my name is Anna, a few of the other girls and I have been reading your policy and did you know, because your&nbs

Environmental degradation reduces the environmental capacity to meet social and ecological needs of societies, which is exacerbated by natural hazards and extreme climate events, and often intensify existing vulnerabilities. Marginalized groups in cities, particularly women and poor, are disproportionately at risk to face negative consequences of such environmental stressors. To better understand relationship between women empowerment and environmental degradation in cities, researchers Ammar Malik and Amit Patel surveyed 1,199 households in 12 informal settlements of New Delhi (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Islamabad and Lahore (Pakistan). Today on CID’s Speaker Series podcast, Ghazi Mirza, student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, interviews Ammar Malik and Amit Patel, who tested several linkages between empowerment and measures of environmental degradation and found many significant associations. With International Women’s day coming up, we wanted to do a special edition of the Podcast. The role of women in business a topic that is becoming more and more a top priority for companies, but also one where there’s still a major ongoing debate and not necessarily a consensus yet. To discuss this, we’ve invited Anne Engerant, currently SVP of RB Health in Latin America. Anne joined RB in France, her home country, in 1997, after five years spent at P&G and a two-year sabbatical between her first two maternities during which she went back to university to and worked with NGOs taking care of homeless people and Aids affected persons. After the birth of her third daughter, in 2000 and another sabbatical spent at writing a novel, she moved in 2001 to UK to lead the European business for AirWick. She was promoted as Regional Marketing Director for South Asia in 2003, based in New Delhi (India). Here she turned India into a growth machine and … conceived her fourth daughter. After a seven month long maternity break in France, she moved back to UK in 2007 as Global Category Director Sustainability to shape, with a cross functional team, the RB Carbon 20 Program aiming at reducing RB´s carbon footprint. Sustainability is a family passion. Anne´s husband is a gardener from the Royal Horticulture Society of England and a Beekeeper from the Royal Beekeeping Society of Belgium. In 2008 Anne was promoted General Manager of Belgium where she spent two years before moving back to UK as Global Category Director for AirWick and then the RB sore throat business (Strepsils, Graneodin). She (finally?) moved to Mexico in 2014 to complete the integration of the BMS Health brands and factory and put the business to double digit growth. In 2018, she got promoted as SVP latam health and led the integration of Mead Johnson acquisition and the creation of the RB Health business unit across Latam. Main topics covered in the Podcast How women’s position in business has changed throughout the years How Anne and RB have encouraged the promotion of female talent The evolution of the topic in the next years Actions to be taken to promote gender diversity within an organization
